Gitex Technology Week kicked off on Sunday amid a flurry of official visits, gadget unveilings, and keynote presentations. We wrapped up day one of the show, while looking ahead to the coming week, and what visitors can expect out of the next four days of Gitex. Away from the technology, we also keep an eye on falling markets, with Saudi Arabia’s bourse taking a big knock on Sunday as a result of increasing diplomatic tensions with the US. We also talk about emerging currencies and the rupee in particular, which has made a slight recovery in recent days. Last, but certainly not least, it’s earnings week, so we can expect a flood of bank results this week, with potentially a few of the US technology giants like Facebook thrown in for good measure. Hold on to your hats, it’s going to be a busy week…

October is coming, and with it―the 38th GITEX Technology Week. Imagine: in 1981, its first year, the fastest modes of communication between companies were the fax machine and telephone. Large companies used an internal mailman to physically deliver messages to colleagues on other floors. Even then, GITEX celebrated pioneers in technology and looking to what comes next. Here and now, it’s the Fourth Industrial Revolution and GITEX has faithfully shone a spotlight on the evolution of the industry.

The Directorate General of Civil Defence, Dubai, demonstrated at GITEX Technology Week how it is deploying drones to respond more effectively in emergency situations. Deploying video solutions from Avaya, the drones can fly over an incident such as a fire or traffic accident, and provide live video feed back to the headquarters control room of Dubai Civil Defence. The solution has been implemented by ConnectIT, an Avaya partner and part of the Libatel group.

It turns out that GITEX Technology Week is far more interesting than GITEX Shopper. The lads chat about all the things poised to make Dubai the super city of the future - flying taxis, flying motorbikes, wireless power, airport face-scanning aquariums...the lot! Other talking points: There's a new Blackberry phone... but who is it for? Reports of the iPhone 8 exploding may be greatly exaggerated MATE 10 HYPE REACHES MAXIMUM LEVELS Oh, and Abbas went and preordered something special, but we won't spoil the surprise here...

This week’s African Tech Round-up is chock-full of important digital, tech and innovation news from across the African continent— not least, the unfortunate rumoured in-fighting and financial distress at Jason Njoku’s media startup, iROKO Partners. Also, we’re happy to have our content producer, Peter “The Enigma” Peele back from a a hectic trip to Dubai where he attended GITEX Technology Week 2015. We managed to convince him to jump on the mic with us this week and share some highlights from his trip. Meanwhile, Tefo Mohapi not only delivered a talk and facilitated a discussion at the the Thabo Mbeki Leadership Institute’s Leadership Conference this past week (the dude got to even have dinner with former South African President Thabo Mbeki himself), but also attended the Brand Africa 100 Awards. Be sure to catch him giving us the low-low on all that in this week’s episode. And finally, Andile Masuku's back from a week-long leave of absence due to eye surgery he had done on his left eye.
