“The Year of Monetizing Minutes Is Over”: Akixi on the Next Phase of Service Provider Differentiation, Podcast

“Gone are the days when service providers could differentiate on call minutes alone. Today, success depends on analytics, integrations, and delivering real-time value to customers.” — John Christian, Vice President of Marketing, Akixi In this special podcast presented by TR Publications and the Cloud Communications Alliance (CCA), Technology Reseller News publisher Doug Green speaks with John Christian, Vice President of Marketing at Akixi, a CCA member and a leading provider of cloud-based value-added services for service providers. Akixi helps service providers deepen customer engagement and generate new revenue through a robust suite of capabilities including advanced call analytics, CRM integration, and real-time call intelligence. The Akixi platform supports seamless provisioning across platforms like Microsoft Teams, Webex, and BroadWorks. Migration and Market Forces Christian highlights the accelerating shift away from legacy PBX platforms such as Avaya, Mitel, and CUCM—driven not only by end-of-life announcements and reduced vendor focus but also by the pull of modern cloud-based solutions. This dual push-pull dynamic is compelling more businesses to modernize their communications infrastructure. Beyond the Seat and the Minute While platforms like Microsoft Teams and Webex have captured collaboration and call control, Christian argues that native analytics capabilities often fall short. This opens an opportunity for service providers to differentiate with value-added services like real-time analytics, especially in regulated or high-demand environments such as healthcare. “Real-time visibility into call behavior is no longer a luxury—it's a competitive necessity,” Christian says, citing examples such as doctors' offices that rely on precise call management for appointment scheduling and patient response. Redefining Contact Center Needs Christian notes a shift in how contact center functionality is being consumed. Instead of investing in large, complex platforms, organizations now seek modular, scalable features such as call recording and CRM integration—without needing hundreds of agents. He explains that Akixi enables service providers to offer these components as standalone tools or bundled solutions, meeting the evolving needs of midsize and enterprise clients while maintaining a lighter implementation footprint. Competitive Landscape With the growing number of Microsoft-certified partners and Direct Routing providers, the market for Teams-based voice services has become saturated. Akixi enables service providers to stand out by layering critical customer experience tools onto their voice offerings—tools that directly support performance metrics, compliance, and operational efficiency. “We're empowering over 100 service providers to build differentiated solutions,” Christian says. “Those who succeed are the ones who go beyond the basics and meet their customers' specific expectations.” Learn More For more information, visit akixi.com or connect with John Christian on LinkedIn.

Are you struggling to figure out how to scale your franchise business while maintaining its core mission? Many entrepreneurs face the challenge of expanding without sacrificing the quality and purpose that drive their business. In an interview with Ford Saeks, Jeff Gartner, co-founder and CEO of Hudson Valley Swim, shared his journey through the world of franchise business growth, offering insights into how he transformed a simple swim lesson into a thriving franchise operation. Jeff's story began with a personal need—ensuring his children received high-quality swim lessons—and quickly grew into something much larger. From his backyard in the Northeast, Jeff recognized a gap in the market, where the available swim instruction lacked the quality he experienced privately. This realization sparked the foundation of Hudson Valley Swim, a business that has grown from a single operation to a franchise model with eight corporate locations and six franchise locations. Jeff's focus was never just on growth for the sake of expansion but rather on building a brand that prioritized safety and skill development in swim education. In a business built around saving lives, Jeff explains how maintaining the core mission was essential as the franchise expanded. His commitment to making sure that every location upheld the same standard of excellence that the original swim school had is a vital element in the brand's success. For Jeff, franchise business growth wasn't simply about opening more doors; it was about ensuring that every franchisee bought into the mission of reducing the risk of drowning through effective swim education. It's this mission-driven focus that sets Hudson Valley Swim apart in a competitive industry, and it's what potential franchisees must fully embrace to join the network. Scaling a franchise, however, is not without its challenges. Jeff reveals that building a foundation rooted in strong systems and processes was key to creating a replicable and scalable model. With decades of experience, he built a turnkey operation, making it easier for franchisees to start strong. From insurance to payroll, Jeff's approach was to have every system ready to go so new franchisees could focus on building their business, rather than getting bogged down in the logistics. This approach allowed his franchise to grow quickly and efficiently while maintaining the high standards of the original brand. Jeff also emphasized the importance of local community engagement in achieving long-term franchise business growth. While digital marketing plays a role, connecting directly with families through local events and partnerships has proven to be a critical component of the brand's success. By tapping into schools, sponsoring local sports teams, and attending community events, Hudson Valley Swim builds trust with parents, positioning itself as more than just a swim school but a vital part of the community. Technology, too, plays an important role in Jeff's model. His background in tech allowed him to streamline operations through automation, making tasks like registration and scheduling more efficient. Yet, as both he and Ford discuss, technology alone is not enough. Personal engagement and connection remain at the heart of the brand's identity, and Jeff has been careful to ensure that while technology improves the efficiency of operations, it doesn't replace the human touch that defines the customer experience. For many entrepreneurs, the idea of scaling a business can seem daunting. Jeff's approach to franchise business growth offers a roadmap for how to do so with purpose. It's not just about adding more locations but about ensuring that each new franchise is set up for success from the start. By fostering a strong sense of community, prioritizing customer relationships, and leveraging technology in thoughtful ways, Hudson Valley Swim has managed to grow without losing sight of its original mission. For business owners looking to scale, Jeff's experience serves as a powerful example of how to combine operational excellence with a deep commitment to the values that drive the business. By putting systems in place and finding franchisees who truly align with the mission, Hudson Valley Swim continues to thrive as it expands across new markets. Watch the full interview on YouTube. About Jeff Gartner Jeff Gartner is a franchisor, technologist, entrepreneur, and inventor, best known as the co-founder of Hudson Valley Swim, a premium swim lesson program launched in 2003 with a mission to save lives through high-quality swim education. In 2022, alongside his wife Joan, Jeff expanded the business into a franchise, which has since been recognized as an "emerging franchise to watch" by numerous associations and publications. Jeff's background in technology is vast and impressive, having been named a "Top 50 Innovator" in Avaya company history for his portfolio of 19 patents, which cover advancements in conference productivity, internet telephony, and email system architectures. A pioneer in the eBusiness world, Jeff was responsible for building the world's first smartphone, the first online e-commerce storefront, and the first B2B eMarketplace. His extensive experience also includes leading technological strategies for major companies like Baker & Taylor and Computer Associates. After retiring from the technology industry, Jeff shifted his focus entirely to expanding his swim school business and empowering entrepreneurs nationwide through his franchise model. CallCabinet and Avaya:  CallCabinet is an all-in-one solution for Avaya and cross-UC platform environments, Podcast, "We normalize their data to allow them to get real insight into what that data is." “We make sure that not only can we record the data effectively, but the way we deal with it, the way we store it is all up to industry and surpassing industry standards,” Ryan Kahan, CEO of CallCabinet. “The customers that are out there using Avaya are our customers. The number of contact centers that are using Avaya is still sky high and really has a large base. And I think it's just been ignored and underestimated for a long time, and we're hoping to change that. We see a lot of our customers who may be using some of the newer technologies for their day-to-day communication.” In this podcast, we catch up with CallCabinet's Avaya story. CallCabinet supports a multi-platform environment as well as multiple deployment types (cloud, prem, hybrid), which is what many Avaya customers are working with. CallCabinet can also help with legacy and proprietary data migration - whether this is needed to future-proof their cross-platform organization or because they are moving away from only using Avaya. With CallCabinet, transitions are seamless, and recording data is compliant and safe. CallCabinet integrates seamlessly with both Avaya AURA and Avaya IP Office. “We're able to give them real insights into what's happening in their contact centers and in their data.” “We normalize their data to allow them to get real insight into what that data is. And if they want to hand it off to somewhere, it's obviously in a standardized format that, you know, across the platforms. But also that we're able to give them real insights into what's happening in their contact centers and in their data.” CallCabinet tackles the compliance challenge, and then provides insights, in real time, to the data that's being generated. The idea is not only stay on the right side of the regulatory regimes, but to be able to utilize the data as well. The company also keeps contact centers in compliance according to the laws of the various nations, which for many big entperise Avaya users, is a realistic scenario. “It's not unusual for customers to be using Avaya in the contact center, Bloomberg turrets in their trading desks, uh you know teams for their you know day-to-day communication uh slack for you know for other communication and what we do is we bring all of that together so we record all of the various environments we take that data we normalize it we store it based on where the customers' needs are for compliance or regular regulatory purposes so we may have one customer who's got a contact center in the UK and they want those calls stored in you know in in the UK, but they need to store their Teams conversations in Europe or in South Africa or in the US. And we have that all with one single pane of glass view. Ultimately, the customer logs into one place, they know that all of their calls are recorded and stored where they need to be, but they can search through everything and all of their data through one portal, one location… We normalize their data to allow them to get real insight into what that data is. And if they want to hand it off to somewhere, it's in a standardized format across the platforms.” CallCabinet's all-in-one compliant recording and analytics solutions deploy quickly and seamlessly. Avaya is often a long-standing legacy platform that organizations rely heavily on, where multiple tools or UC platforms have been added on to. About CallCabinet CallCabinet is the premier cross-platform SaaS provider for end-to-end compliant call recording, AI-driven conversation analytics, call QA, and custom business intelligence reporting. Serving calling, conferencing, and contact centers for all industries, CallCabinet continuously evolves, offering the latest call recording and analytics technology via a single pane of glass UI.

Empowering Customer Interactions and Employee Engagement  Shep Hyken interviews Alan Masarek, President and Chief Executive Officer at Avaya. He talks about leveraging AI to improve customer experience, enhance employee productivity, and create better business outcomes.  This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    How is customer experience being transformed using AI?  What are the evolving communication channels and customer support preferences in today's digital landscape?  What impact does AI have on job roles in the customer service industry?  How can businesses use AI to allow human agents to focus on more complex and empathetic customer interactions?  What role does AI play in balancing human and AI-driven customer support?  Top Takeaways:    The customer experience market is expected to be worth almost 50 billion by the end of this decade. In the Internet economy, companies are struggling to differentiate themselves the old-fashioned way through price and availability. Now, you can compare products and pricing from companies worldwide. How can a brand differentiate themselves from its competition? The quality of the experience they provide.     Businesses thrive when they prioritize creating a positive customer experience. A company's success is directly tied to its ability to make customers feel valued.      Leaders must recognize the need to invest in AI not merely as a trendy innovation but as a crucial tool for enhancing customer relationships, improving employee productivity, and boosting engagement.    The impact of AI on customer service has generated concerns about potential job displacement. When the ATM was introduced, people said it would make human bank tellers obsolete. However, most banks still have tellers today. AI is not set to eliminate jobs but rather transform them. AI in customer service aims to automate routine tasks, empowering human agents to dedicate their attention to more complex and empathetic interactions.    The future of customer support includes a blend of human and AI-driven solutions. While many customers still prefer phone support, a significant number are leaning towards digital and self-service options. Brands must leverage AI to meet customers' preferences and enhance their experience without losing the ever important human touch that creates an emotional connection with customers.    Plus, Shep and Alan talk about how companies can embrace innovation without disruption. Tune in!  Quote:   “A pleasant employee experience delivers a pleasant customer experience. The marriage of the two drives a better business outcome. AI solutions are important for optimizing the employee experience, which in turn drives the employee experience.”    About:     Alan Masarek is the President and Chief Executive Officer at Avaya. The idea was sparked by the tragic realization that many victims of shootings and other emergencies suffer due to delayed first-responder intervention, largely caused by a lack of situational awareness and direct communication. 911inform addresses these challenges by providing first responders with critical information and communication tools, ensuring a faster, more informed response to emergencies. This innovative solution reflects Ivo's dedication to leveraging technology for public safety, making a tangible difference in the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency services. Telecom Reseller

TADHack is the largest global hackathon focused on programmable communications since 2014. The event has helped tens of thousands of developers and innovators use programmable communications (UCaaS, CPaaS, CCaaS, AI, vCon, IVR, Telecom API, etc.) to solve real-world problems). TadHack will take place in the weekend before Enterprise Connect 2024, and the winners (there's a $3K prize) will be announced on Tuesday at a scheduled event at EC24, at the Gaylord in Orlando. The hackathon will take place at the nearby Valencia College West Campus, in person and online. In this special Cloud Communications Alliance and TR Podcast, Alan Quayle Founder TADHack, TADSummit and Thomas Howe, of Strolid, discuss why everyone should consider participating: “Innovation is not the sole domain of developers, everyone can innovate,” says Quayle. Thomas Howe, of Strolid, discusses their creation, vCon, being standardized by the IETF, a PDF for conversations. Strolid is a sponsor. They created. It's going to be important for all communications companies in our industry. What may be interesting for your audience is at TADHack we have 2 categories of entries: Showcases and Hacks. Explained here in the rules: https://tadhack.com/2024/hackathon-rules/. Hacks are what developers create. A Showcase could be an idea about how a UCaaS, CCaaS, Conferencing, or good old telco could use vCon. Strolid wants to see application ideas, and Showcases get free publicity at TADHack, and in the EC24 session. A showcase is simply a short video about the idea, with perhaps a couple of slides. We've had Showcase submitted since the first TADHack in 2014. Innovation is not the sole domain of developers, everyone can innovate. TADHack enables developers (hack) and innovators (showcase) to share ideas on using the TADHack sponsors' technologies (STROLID with vCon). A showcase is simply a short presentation of an idea about how you can use the sponsors' technologies in your business. Previous TADHack sponsors include: Cisco, RingCentral, Jambonz, Avaya, Telnyx, Subspace, Simwood, Sagoma, NTT, Flowtoute, Matrix, Tropo, Temasys, Ericsson, Vidyo, Telestax, Symbol.ai, Stacuity, Huawei, Oracle, Ubuntu, Google, Nexmo, and more. https://tadhack.com

Investing in Customer Experience and Employee Engagement Shep Hyken interviews Alan Masarek, CEO and Board Director of Avaya. He discusses prioritizing customer satisfaction and creating a positive workplace culture. Top Takeaways:  Being a destination workplace requires deliberately building a culture that attracts talented individuals. Organizations should strive to create an environment where employees are proud to work, find meaning in their careers, and have growth opportunities.  In today's job market, loyalty to a single company is less common. Employees often see their first job as a stepping stone to their next employment opportunity. Companies need to create a work environment that employees never want to leave and would want to recommend to others. Providing innovation without disrupting existing systems is a strategic approach for companies with large installations. The gradual integration of new channels and capabilities can help customers evolve and expand in the journey they have chosen. Creating a clear and transparent roadmap is key to building trust with customers and employees. Companies can foster stronger relationships and restore confidence in their offerings by demonstrating reliability and actively involving customers in the decision-making process. This can be achieved through open communication, sharing long-term plans, and consistently delivering on commitments. Balancing financial results with customer and employee objectives is essential for long-term success. Companies should prioritize customer delight and creating value for shareholders. Organizations can create a clear roadmap for success by aligning these objectives and holding themselves accountable for achieving results. Plus, Shep and Alan talk about Avaya's North Star and how it can be applied to businesses of any size, in any industry. Tune in! Quote: "The megatrend in business today is towards CX. Brands have to differentiate themselves based on customer experience.” About:  Alan Masarek, CEO and Board Director of Avaya.
