On today's episode of Coogee Voice Dr Marjorie O'Neill sits down with artist Alex Snellgrove, who's painting of local journalist Helen Pitt was a finalist in the prestigious 2021 Portia Geach Memorial Award. This episode focuses on the important of art in our community and the need for greater recognition of female artists.
It took ten years of research and writing through some of the toughest times in her life, but journo Helen Pitt’s determination was rewarded. She not only completed her book on the machinations of building the Sydney Opera House, simply called "The House", but her work was also recognised with the 2018 Walkley Book Award. Helen is a senior journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald, and credits the skills she learnt there, with being able to see such a monumental project through to fruition. In this episode of The Journo Project, Helen tells me how her journalistic investigative skills revealed aspects of the making of the Opera House that had never come to light before.
The fascinating backstories and controversies behind two architectural icons: the Sydney Opera House and the Parliament House.
If art can help us understand ourselves, the parabolic sails and interior of the Sydney Opera House might tell us a little about how Australia finds and makes beauty. The place wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t been championed and built by working people for working people, but in a power struggle under a different government, the professional man with vision, Jørn Utzon, was more or less told to go back home where he came from. Journalist Helen Pitt, winner of the 2018 Walkley Book prize for “The House,” recounts a few of the people behind the making, and near-unmaking, of one of the world's design icons of the twentieth century.
