Followed by: Tucked behind Victoria Gate Lodge lies one of London's tiniest and most tender secrets – the Hyde Park Pet Cemetery. It's the Victorians at their most human – sentimental, heartfelt, and quietly profound. Join us among the mossy stones and whispering trees for a story of love, loss, and loyalty – a forgotten corner of London where even the ghosts have wagging tails.

In Brazil in the 1990s, women discovered using misoprostol for safe, self-managed abortion. In 1980 in France, mifepristone was discovered and in 1988, approved. Approval in the U.S. occurred shortly thereafter, in 2000. Rebecca Kelliher, journalist and author of Just Pills: The Extraordinary Story of a Revolution in Abortion Care, sits down to talk with us about her new book exploring the history of misoprostol and mifepristone. The comprehensive approval, and global dispersion, of misoprostol and mifepristone took decades. Yet now, the most recent numbers show that 63% of U.S. abortions are medication abortions. These medications—specifically mifepristone—are under increasing attacks, with anti-abortion actors targeting telehealth prescription. In addition, lawsuits attempting to prevent the mailing of pills to states with abortion bans are becoming more frequent. While these attacks are devastating, we can look to Latin America for hope: in Argentina, underground feminist organizations formed to disperse misoprostol while the country faced a near-total abortion ban. Send us a textWhat if the call that changes everything arrives decades late? Pete Townsend—actor, collector of lost causes, and lifelong Bristolian—shares a story stitched with grit, humour, and heart. From a childhood spent trying to meet a father's unreachable ideals to a mid-rehearsal phone call revealing a twin sister he never knew, Pete's journey explores identity, reunion, and the quiet power of being useful to others. We wander through Bristol's creative life: Carol singing that becomes Gilbert & Sullivan, Opera choruses that lead to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and a Director's note that becomes a life rule—“I can see you acting.” Pete talks about learning to be truthful on stage, why comedy from the Goons to Python shaped his ear, and how Radio 4 became his “university of the air.” He also opens a window into Bristol's aerospace history with vivid memories of Concorde's first lift and final landing—right down to a pilot's cap trapped forever by heat and speed—and the surreal night he attended the Wicked premiere thanks to a name mix-up with the other Pete Townsend.Beyond the anecdotes sits a deeper question: how do we measure a life? Pete doesn't chase applause; he values usefulness, kindness, and the sense that time spent together wasn't wasted. We talk legacy, adoption records, twin studies in Minnesota, the pull of old vehicles and even older stories, and why persistence—however modest—often wins the day. It's reflective, funny, and deeply human. If you're drawn to personal storytelling, adoption reunions, Bristol theatre, Concorde lore, or the craft of acting with honesty, you'll feel at home here. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”The extraordinary story of a 13-year-old martyr provides a powerful lens through which we examine modern faith challenges. Writer and Catholic convert Avery Lane joins us to share the remarkable testimony of José Luis Sánchez del Río—"Joselito"—who was tortured and killed during Mexico's Cristero War for refusing to renounce his faith.Avery's own journey from secular humanism to Catholicism frames our exploration of Joselito's story. We trace how this child became a flag bearer for Catholic resistance fighters when the Mexican government implemented anti-Catholic laws in the 1920s. During battle, Joselito demonstrated incredible selflessness by offering his horse to his general, sacrificing his own escape and leading to his capture by government forces. What follows is an account of extraordinary courage. Joselito refused to deny Christ and his final words—"Viva Cristo Rey! Viva Santa Maria de Guadalupe!"—echo through history as a testament to unwavering faith.Read The Full Story Here! Ky Dickens is the award-winning filmmaker behind "The Telepathy Tapes," the viral podcast phenomenon. This conversation explores the intersection of neurodiversity and consciousness as Ky shares her journey documenting non-speaking autistic individuals with apparent telepathic abilities. We discuss her transformation from pragmatic skeptic to someone witnessing replicable telepathic demonstrations, the concept of "The Hill" (where individuals telepathically gather), and how these discoveries challenge our materialist conceptualization of reality. As I oscillate between wonder and skepticism, Ky provides a steady compass through my conflicted intellectual terrain. Ky's work is a profound invitation to question the crude facsimile we call reality. This conversation is mind-blowing! Enjoy! So Jesus came, Jesus died, Jesus rose, and Jesus conquered. After going through the Gospels, what else is left to say? “How to Buy Drugs From Desperate Panicked Criminals With Guns” is one of the essays I wrote at the University of Arizona before I dropped out and had to restart my life. I wrote it about the experiences I had leaving my home at age 16 and encountering some of the worst of what America in that time and place had to offer. I have been telling the Extraordinary Story of Jesus Christ and I have been sharing struggles I had in my faith life. This week I start to tell the tale of how the blood Jesus shed on Calvary got to my ancestors in El Salvador, and Mexico, and Kansas. Because while I get that Jesus Christ was alive 2,000 years ago, in the year 0-something AD, what difference does that make in the year 2000-something “C.E.”? That is what will come next in Jesus Christ's Extraordinary Story. The life of Jesus gets strange on this episode of The Extraordinary Story. According to some prominent religious art, this is the episode where he flies into the sky. And according to snake handlers, this is the episode where he gives us all sorts of crazy powers. But I want to show how it doesn't have to seem so strange after all, and then finish my evidence for the resurrection with the most powerful evidence of all. Learn More The Extraordinary Story is a podcast about the life of Jesus Christ, who entered the maze of our world to transform it into a path to Him, today and always. The Extraordinary Story is produced by Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, and is written and hosted by Tom Hoopes.
In this episode of The Extraordinary Story, I want to share with you the story of a scholar who poked holes in the resurrection story — and then I want to let you know how I fill those holes in. If you've been following this podcast from the beginning, you know that there's a long gap between season two and season three. That's because I went on a journey, an intellectual journey, as the work of one honest Christian scholar made me question a lot of what I had taken for granted about the resurrection. Today I present to you evidence for the resurrection.
Remember when you made that crazy promise to God where you said you'd do anything for him? Remember, you laughed it off later as too enthusiastic and figured he laughed it off too. Well, Peter finds out the hard way that no, he didn't laugh it off. We will look at the second to last resurrection appearance in the Gospels today, and see the apostles who are supposed to be fishers of men. Go back to just fishing and wind up catching God himself. Learn More The Extraordinary Story is a podcast about the life of Jesus Christ, who entered the maze of our world to transform it into a path to Him, today and always. Jesus had a busy day after he rose from the dead. We are still right there with him on Easter evening as he visits the Twelve Apostles. Or 10 anyway: Judas was gone and Thomas couldn't make it. Jesus gives surprising evidence of the Resurrection and helps the Apostles understood exactly why this all happened this way. Then Thomas shows up … Learn More The Extraordinary Story is a podcast about the life of Jesus Christ, who entered the maze of our world to transform it into a path to Him, today and always. It's Easter afternoon and two disciples are leaving town in a hurry in the wake of Jesus's death. There are some very strange features to this story. Why don't they recognize Jesus? Why does he do such a strange miracle? This episode asks these questions and shares one hot take on a longstanding mystery: Who was the unnamed disciple headed out of town with Cleopas? It all adds up to a story tailor made for 21st century skeptics. Today we will be looking at the first people to encounter the risen Jesus, which happened to be women. We will talk about how this was awkward for the first disciples, but kind of great for us today. We'll start to notice also how different the different people's encounters with Jesus after the resurrection were, and ask for the first time, but not the last, why? We will also note the surprising details of Mary Magdalene's encounter with Jesus. And I will give my personal theory on whether or not Jesus met his mother after the resurrection. Re-airing a Season One fan favorite:The most secretive mission of World War II ended in the largest scale shark attack of all time. The U.S.S. Indianapolis' mission was so secret, the entire crew was unaware of their cargo: the components of the atomic bomb ‘Little Boy' which was dropped on Hiroshima. Thus, when the cruiser was sunk by a Japanese torpedo, no one knew, and 900 sailors were left floating in shark-infested waters for four days. HBH is excited to welcome Doug Stanton, author of ‘In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors'.On July 30, 1945, after delivering their top secret cargo which would would strike Japan only one week later, the USS Indianapolis was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. The 610-foot cruiser quickly sank, and the surviving sailors had to battle dehydration and hundreds of hungry sharks for over four days. The crew of the Indianapolis was filled with incredible heroes, not all of whom survived this harrowing ordeal. In addition to 'In Harm's Way', Doug Stanton is the New York Times bestselling author of 'The Odyssey of Echo Company', as well as 'Horse Soldiers', which was the basis for the 2018 movie '12 Strong', starring Chris Hemsworth.
Jesus died on Good Friday. He was in the ground on Holy Saturday, but now it's Sunday morning. Now we get to the good part, the triumph, the redemption. There are a number of resurrection experiences to talk about, but we'll start early on Easter morning at first light, when Mary Magdalene, then Peter, then John saw the inside of the tomb. What they saw changed everything. The Lord is dead. Jesus bowed his head and breathed his last in the previous episode of The Extraordinary Story. But now, even before he is sealed in his tomb, astonishing things begin to happen. The Gospel of John shares a surprising detail that echoes back to the Samaritan woman at the well and passed back through salvation history all the way to Eden. Then when Jesus is buried, his power that shook the earth pushes his children up and out of the depths of sin and into the streets of Jerusalem. What will it mean for us? We come at last to the big culmination of Jesus's earthly ministry. The goal of his life. The event he has set his face like flint toward. The event he has been marching forward to reach: the crucifixion. No one expected the Messiah to die on the cross. But we will look back and see that the signs were there in the Old Testament, left there like windows through the walls of the maze looking to the cross — the ladder, up and out. Today on the extraordinary story, we will walk with Jesus up the hill of Calvary carrying a cross, and ask again, "Why did Jesus have to die?" Paul says he did it to save us from the wrath of God. How is that okay? And then we will see what happens when Jesus takes up the cross of our sin and it knocks him down. Why is it that the Son of God Himself has to walk such a terrible road? And why do we have to take up crosses to follow him? In this final episode of Extraordinary Stories, Mia and Bronwyn McCahon talk about the incredible places they got to go and people they got to meet in their magazine heydays and also, what it was like to see the wave of the Internet crashing towards the glossy-mag empire and to be saying, “Um, shouldn’t we… do something about this?” THE END BITS: This episode was originally released to MPlus subscribers. What did it take to make a tabloid mag in the It Girl era? You know, the days when Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie or Lindsay Lohan were falling out of cars, in and out of rehab and a ruthless paparazzi pack was documenting all of it? It’s the era that, through a 2021 lens, might be the most problematic of them all, but back then, what was it like to work in the magazines that knew the more outrageous the antics, the higher the sale? On this episode of Extraordinary Stories: Magazine Queens, Emma Gillespie speaks to Australia’s weekly magazine Queen Louisa Hatfield and Mamamia’s own, former OK! Deputy Editor Holly Wainwright, about the Britney years. THE END BITS: This episode was originally released to MPlus subscribers. Subscribers get unlimited access to all Mamamia content. The 1990s were the era of the supermodels, the waifs, and a trend so deadly it came with a health warning: heroin chic. Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire brought luxury to the local newsagent and gave Australian women a taste of the runways of Paris and Milan. A handful of women known by their first names only were on every cover: Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Elle… until the waifs came along and knocked them off. On this episode of Extraordinary Stories: Magazine Queens, Emma Gillespie speaks to former Vogue Editor Kirstie Clements about what it was like working in a world that would fly you to Paris for a manicure and also refuse to make clothes that could fit grown-up women. And Paula Joye tells us about what it was like working with the supermodels of the 90s... And yes, she saw them all naked. THE END BITS: This episode was originally released to MPlus subscribers. Michael Finkel - The Stranger in the Woods - The Extraordinary Story of the Last True HermitJuly 31In 1986, a shy and intelligent twenty-year-old named Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the forest. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later, when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even through brutal winters, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store edibles and water, and to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothing, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of his secluded life—why did he leave? what did he learn?—as well as the challenges he has faced since returning to the world. It is a gripping story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
