From just 6 employees lending in the 9 Bay Area counties, TMC has grown into the largest CDC in the nation, providing financing for small businesses in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Hawaii. Under her visionary leadership, TMC has facilitated over $14 billion in SBA commercial real estate loans for over 7,000 small businesses, leading to the creation of an estimated 60,000 jobs.Recognizing the needs of smaller entrepreneurs, not able to take advantage of the 504 program, Barbara expanded her impact by founding Working Solutions a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), in 1999. This initiative addressed the financing gaps faced by start-ups, women, minorities, and low-income businesses unable to access conventional funding sources. Working Solutions was “incubated” in the TMC office until it grew into self-sufficiency. Today, it is one of the most successful CDFIs in the country. In 2018, repeating the method of incubating another nonprofit, Barbara founded TMC Community Capital (TMC CC), an online, technology-based microlender. Since its inception, TMC Community Capital has disbursed over $7 million to approximately 350 businesses, providing crucial support to under-served entrepreneurs. Notably, 82% of the loans facilitated by TMC CC supported entrepreneurs of color, while 56% benefited women-owned businesses and 75% aided business owners with low-to-moderate income levels.Morrison developed her passion for small business economic development early in her career while serving as deputy director of the Mayor's Office of Economic Development in San Francisco.A former mayor and city council member for the city of Belvedere, Morrison has been widely recognized for her advocacy for women and small business owners, as well as the leadership she provided for many community organizations.Currently, Barbara participates in several influential organizations, including the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and the International Women's Forum (IWF). Her engagement in these organizations reflects her ongoing commitment to fostering economic growth, supporting entrepreneurship and helping local communities grow and thrive.About GlobeSt. Women of Influence: The Women of Influence Conference is an exclusive two-day event that celebrates the women who drive the commercial real estate industry forward. Too often the advice given to women doesn't work because it wasn't designed by or for women. In this episode, we share advice from inspirational women of influence. We break it down and talk about what advice serves us, and what advice…seemingly well-meaning, might lead to unintended consequences. Should we always give 100% in everything we do? Should we bring our authentic selves always? Should we only do work we love? Maybe, maybe not. #Tunein and we'll break it all down. We are celebrating our Birthday in a BIG way. Tonight, we are sharing an interview we had with newly appointed Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris-Bolden. Justice Kyra Harris Bolden joined the Michigan Supreme Court on January 1, 2023, when she was appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, making her the first Black woman to serve as a Justice. A graduate of Southfield Public Schools, Justice Bolden received her bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While serving as a state representative in the Michigan House of Representatives, Bolden advocated for Michiganders as a member of the Judiciary Committee and focused her work on criminal justice reform, crafting and passing bipartisan legislation to protect survivors of sexual violence. In her interview she shares contemplating a run for Michigan Supreme Court Justice after being asked by retiring Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. Justice Bolden initially rejected the idea. But gave it some thought after becoming pregnant with her first child. What made her decide to go for it was always wanting her daughter grow up knowing that there as a Black Woman on the Michigan Supreme Court. And, now she has made this new reality a bit more personal; a new mother, becoming the first Black Woman ever to hold a sit on Michigan's highest court. This is an exciting an historic interview that we can't wait to share. PLUS, as we put a bow on "Women's History Month" we have a very special Thought of the Week that's entitled, "A Revelation Worth Sharing" that we believe is not just for women but is for all of us. It originates from the age old missed understanding of the most celebrated and most misunderstood women in history - Mary the Mother of Jesus. It is definitely a revelation worth sharing. We hope you get a chance to share in our special Birthday Edition of the podcast and do us a favor as our birthday wish, share this podcast episode with as many people as you can. Finally, thanks to all of you who have wished us a Happy Birthday. Your sentiments and birthday wishes are greatly appreciated. This week we continue our Women of Influence Series with an exciting and empowering interview with the Director of the Covenant House of Michigan, Megan Dunn. Meagan Dunn joined Covenant House Michigan (CHMI) in July 2022. She comes to CHMI from YWCA Kalamazoo where she was vice president of programs since 2020, managing a $10 million program budget and a team of more than 100 program staff. In her role as Executive Director, Meagan provides leadership to the staff in both Detroit and Grand Rapids locations. Under Meagan's leadership, the staff delivers high-quality programs and services to help young people achieve housing stability, heal from trauma, and hone their interests and skills to forge new pathways to independence. For her work as the Exec. Dir of CHMI, Meagan recently received a Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit's City Council. In tonight's interview we talk about her extensive work serving others, and helping to eradicate the growing problem of youth homelessness in City of Detroit & Grand Rapids, as well as the State of Michigan. Also, as we continue our Women's History Month Celebration, we could not think of a better example of a powerful Women of Influence than Former First Lady Michelle Obama. We share her final official address as the First Lady of these United States to educators and young people across the country and the world. Her message will serve as this episode's Thought of the Week. Needless to say, we've got a great show and interview in store for you this week. This show is definitely appointment listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-s-nimmons/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-s-nimmons/support
