Thursday is tearing around the track as we share the UAW whispers we're hearing out there. We also talk about a new report on the EV gender gap, as well as the reasons Fall sees the most car accidents. UAW Update: Yesterday was a day with minimal fanfare but a few steps forward: Stellantis submitted a new contract proposal to the UAW, marking its fifth offer since negotiations began, which centered on "subcommittee open issues."This is the first new proposal from any of the Detroit 3 automakers since the UAW began their strike on September 15.UAW President Shawn Fain still threatens to escalate the strike, adding more workers to the picket lines, if "serious progress" isn't made by the union's Friday deadline.GM disclosed details of its latest offer, promising raises totaling 20% over the next four years, resulting in top wages reaching $39.24 by 2027. They also reduced the number of years it takes for new hires to reach the top pay tier from eight to fourGM's President Mark Reuss pushed back on what the company has called ‘misinformation' in an op-ed. The company reiterated that their proposal would equalize wages across roles, potentially raising base wages for 85% of GM's workforce to around $82,000 annually and $150,000 when factoring in items like benefits and overtime.Reuss criticized the UAW's demands, emphasizing GM's significant investments into its employees and noting the company's financial contributions, including a net income of roughly $65 billion from 2013 to 2022A recent survey by Edmunds reveals that men are more likely to purchase EVs than women, with 67% of EV buyers in 2023 being men and 33% women. This gender disparity in EV purchasing is greater than that in the overall U.S. car market, where 59% of buyers are men and 41% are women. And the reasons they buy EVs couldn't be further apartMen tend to purchase EVs driven by the novelty and the excitement of owning new technology, with brand loyalty playing a significant role. In contrast, women prioritize practical aspects like value and range. The average EV price, close to $60,000, is a concern. Women show a preference for EVs priced under $30,000 leaning towards plug-in hybrids as a bridge between traditional and fully-electric cars. We're only two days away from the first day of Fall. Known for its fall foliage and pumpkin spice, the coming season also sees the highest number of vehicle accidents according to our friends at CARFAX.Contrary to the common belief that winter sees the highest number of crashes, over 72% of U.S. drivers, equating to about 170 million, reside in states where Fall contains the most crashesReasons for fall accidents include reduced daylight leading to more night-time driving, slippery roads due to wet leaves, and deer mating season increasing deer-related collisions.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Here's a true aviation stinker ripped from the headlines! Todd and John discuss a recent event where a Delta A350 traveling from Atlanta to Barcelona had to return to Atlanta due to an uncontained diarrhea event involving a passenger. On to more serious aviation safety topics, they discuss in detail the March 1991 crash that killed the backup band for country and western music legend Reba McEntire. The pilots were flying out of an unfamiliar airport at night over mountainous terrain when the aircraft hit a mountain. All on board were killed. This accident is a great illustration of the importance of preflight planning and preparation. Todd shares the sequence of a recent flight where he altered course based on information he had about mountainous terrain ahead. John stresses the need for pilots to take time to make themselves aware of the flight path from begging to end so they can make smart decisions in flight.

Solar geoengineering is a hot (er, cool?) topic these days. One method involves injecting a form of sulfur into the atmosphere to reflect solar radiation and help reduce global temperatures. But it could also cause unpredictable changes to ozone, rainfall, and ecosystems. So when a rogue startup began sending balloons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere last year, it sparked outrage. But here's the thing: We've been geoengineering our atmosphere for decades, just not intentionally. Scientists have long known that sulfur dioxide emissions from maritime shipping have a cooling effect on the atmosphere. They brighten clouds and reflect more solar radiation. We've also known that sulfur dioxide is a toxic air pollutant that causes tens of thousands of premature deaths per year. So in 2020 when the International Maritime Organization, which regulates shipping, required ships to drastically cut their sulfur dioxide emissions, it reduced air pollution. But it also accidentally warmed the surface of the oceans. So how big of a deal is this? In this episode, Shayle talks to Dr. Dan Visioni, climate scientist and assistant professor at Cornell University's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. They cover topics like: The mechanism behind marine cloud brightening and how it differs from stratospheric sulfate injection Why the warming effect was so strong in the North Atlantic in particular What we still don't understand about the impact on global mean temperatures and regional weather, likeheat waves and hurricanes What this accidental experiment tells us about how to conduct a deliberate geoengineering experiment Recommended Resources: Analysis: How low-sulphur shipping rules are affecting global warming Atmospheric Chemistry & Physics: Climate and air quality trade-offs in altering ship fuel sulfur content Catalyst is a co-production of Post Script Media and Canary Media. This week, in Earlville, Iowa, problems enter the marriage of a farm couple, leading to cheating, and many hurt feelings. Tensions simmer, under the surface, and this all ends with someone having a large corn rake stuck in their back, and the spouse claiming that it they must have suffered an awful accident. The problem is, the evidence says otherwise. Also, weird behavior, a crazy 911 call, and even crazier internet searches lead to a conviction... but will it stand??Along the way, we find out that there isn't a lot of "rockin'" in this area, that no matter what your problems may be, the hogs still need to be fed, and that you can't accidentally fall on a corn rake, more than once!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! As an army veteran with extensive experience in safety and health, Travis brings his wealth of knowledge in hazardous waste management, chemical safety, and industrial hygiene to share a cautionary tale that highlights the importance of safety basics and staying vigilant in the face of potential hazards. As you will, Travis' story serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of adhering to safety protocols, maintaining effective communication, and understanding the importance of emergency equipment. Episode Highlights: Travis's story demonstrating the need to slow down and always wear PPE The importance of PPE and its application even when not directly involved The role of communication in preventing accidents Being vigilant about emergency equipment locations The pitfalls of rushing through tasks Lessons from military training: "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast" The necessity of preventive maintenance for emergency systems Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions: In this episode, Travis shares a story that highlights several important safety basics. How do you think different safety issues layer onto each other to create more complex situations? Take the time to reflect on emergency management systems near you. How can we better our knowledge of where they are and ensure that we know how to use them if necessary? Does anyone have a story to share about a lesson learned about communication and taking the time to work safely? Quotes: "I learned to always wear my PPE, regardless of whether I was the one that was working or not, if I was near any sort of chemical that was being touched. “I also learned to always be aware of where an eyewash station was or any sort of emergency equipment, so that if we had another situation like that where I had to get someone to an eyewash station or a safety shower, I could do it quickly.” “We learned that in these types of situations, to slow down. This all really happened because he felt anxious and he felt like we had to get to the next job. In the army, we have a saying - ‘slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.'” "You can't rush the job. Communicate and prioritize safety." "Making sure that you're doing maintenance on those emergency management systems and ensuring that everything's going to work properly in an emergency situation." After only 18 months at Savannah PD, Officer Jon Lindsey made the jump to SWAT - partly due to his Army experiencing serving on The 75th Ranger Regiment, but mostly due to his outstanding work ethic and a natural knack for the job. Paired with K-9 Jas, the two got into their own fair share of scrapes and close calls, but nothing too serious. That is, until a race to a scene went all too wrong in July of 2021. Fortunately, when it comes to working dogs, Mike knows a thing or two about loss.----------Chapters:00:00 - Intro01:13 - Savannah Police Academy22:48 - Triage and Footchases37:18 - Combatives Training45:25 - SWAT Stories55:39 - Crazy Calls, Shocking Situations01:00:22 - Losing Jas01:16:01 - Bolt Bites01:28:37 - What's Next?----------Support Jon Lindsey -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/j_chris_l19Support the Georgia Police K9 Foundation: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/georgiapolicek9foundation----------Sponsors: BioProteinUse code MIKEDROP to save $30 on your first order at https://www.bioproteintech.com----------BUBS NaturalsThe BUBS namesake derives from Glen ‘BUB' Doherty, who was heroically killed in Benghazi, Libya in 2012. In August of 1895, a ship called the SS Coptic approached the coast of Northern California. On that boat was a passenger from San Francisco, a young man named Wong Kim Ark. He was returning home after visiting his wife and child in China, and he'd taken similar trips before. But when the ship docked, officials told him he couldn't get off. The customs agent barred him according to the Chinese Exclusion Act, which denied citizenship to Chinese immigrants. Though Wong Kim Ark had been born in the U.S. and lived his whole life here, the agent said he was not a citizen. U.S. history, politics, and culture is deeply linked to East Asian countries like China, South Korea, and Taiwan. This month, we're telling some of those stories, in our series "Superpower." Today, the story of Wong Kim Ark, whose epic fight to be recognized as a citizen in his own country led to a Supreme Court decision affirming birthright citizenship for all.
