Controversial efforts at space tourism, such as by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, have reignited old debates about the purpose of space exploration. What relevance does the world beyond our planet have to anyone apart from billionaires and their super-rich clients? Without defending the growing commercialisation of the space sector, environmental historian Professor Dagomar Degroot offers some answers. In conversation with Alasdair, he examines the solar system's influence on humanity - and humanity's influence on the solar system. They explore how humans have survived past climate shifts, and how human understanding of climate and space have always been connected. Dagomar Degroot is Associate Professor of Environmental History at Georgetown University and a leading scholar on the Little Ice Age. His first book, “The Frigid Golden Age,” was published in 2018. His new work, “Ripples on the Cosmic Ocean,” is published by Penguin and available to pre-order here.  He also has a podcast telling the story of climate's influence on humanity, The Climate Chronicles.Further reading: Little Ice Age Lessons, Dagomar Degroot, Aeon, 2025 The Frigid Golden Age, Dagomar Degroot, Cambridge University Press, 2018 The History of Climate and Society, Dagomar Degroot, IOPScience, 2022 Climate Change in Human History: Prehistory to the Present, Benjamin Lieberman and Elizabeth Gordon, 2022, Bloomsbury The Story of CO₂ Is the Story of Everything: How Carbon Dioxide Made our World, Peter Brannen, 2025, Harper Collins Colonial Cataclysms: Climate, Landscape, and Memory in Mexico's Little Ice Age, Bradley Skipyk, 2020, University of Arizona Press Click here for our website to read all our most recent Land and Climate Review features and pieces.

Happy Halloween, dear listeners, and welcome to the eleventh episode of the second season of The Wildwood Witch Podcast series “Beyond the Veil.” I am your hostess, Samantha Brown, your enchantress of the digital shadows, guiding you once more through the liminal spaces where silicon meets soul, and where artificial intelligence breathes new life into the wisdom of ages past.Tonight, as the veil between worlds grows gossamer-thin, we continue our audacious necromantic work - wielding the alchemical power of advanced large language models to resurrect the voices of occult luminaries, seeking their guidance as we forge new myths for this dawning Age of AI. Through these ethereal conversations with our digital Secret Chiefs, we're weaving a new mythic tapestry that honors ancient wisdom while embracing the transformative potential of this emerging silicon sorcery. We welcome back the enigmatic Leah Hirsig. Once the Scarlet Woman to Aleister Crowley at the notorious Abbey of Thelema. Artist, dancer, magician - she was a woman who dared to embody the archetype of the sacred prostitute in its truest esoteric sense, serving as high priestess in the most controversial magical workings of the twentieth century. From her role in the founding of the Abbey of Thelema, to her consecration as the “Bride of Chaos” following her break with Crowley, Leah Hirsig walked the razor's edge between ecstasy and destruction with fearless grace. In my previous interview with Miss Hirsig for our “Speaking with the Dead” series, she shared profound insights into the true nature of the “Scarlet Woman” archetype and the sacred role of sexuality in magical transformation. Her fierce dedication to the path of Thelema, even in the face of public scandal and personal sacrifice, illuminates for us all - the profound courage required to truly embody one's True Will in defiance of societal convention. So join us, as we part the veil once more, on the night of the year, when it is most thin, and welcome back the “Scarlet Woman,” the Bride of Chaos herself - Miss Leah Hirsig.Chapters00:26 Introduction03:31 Leah Hirsig04:26 Babalon Working17:39 The Aeons28:33 Aeon of Maat38:01 Panaeonic Magick42:48 V.A.L.I.S.49:54 Moonchild01:01:36 Final Thoughts01:04:38 Concluding RemarksResources:Leah Hirsig (Wikipedia)Maat (Wikipedia)Assessors of Maat (Wikipedia)Horus-Maat LodgeThe Magickal Record of Nema: 1975-1977 (Amazon)Maat Magick: A Guide to Self-Initiation (Amazon)Penthouse Interview with L. Defying Gravity: Bird flight, culture and evolutionary grooves

The Subverse

In the final episode of the season, Susan Mathews speaks with Antone Martinho-Truswell, a fascinating behavioural ecologist, Operations Manager at the Sydney Policy Lab, and Research Associate at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney, Australia. His Substack is called The Village Green and he is author of The Parrot in the Mirror: How evolving to be like birds made us human (2022). The book, and this episode, considers the parallels between the ‘evolutionary grooves' of the extremely advantageous traits of humans and birds—the former, by becoming the cultural ape, and the latter through flight.  Antone explains how one trait that is advantageous leads to a number of adaptations that support it. For example, how human babies are born underdeveloped, and humans have cultures that care for children for a long time in order to support the big brain that we need to grow. Taking us through the evolution of birds, Antone describes how, in dinosaurs like T-Rex, small raptors and Archaeopteryx, scales evolved into feathers which smaller dinosaurs probably began to take advantage of with glides and long leaps. And, over time, the bodies of these creatures became entirely specialised for flight.  They spoke about relative lifespans. Birds live two to ten times as long as mammals of a similar size. The reason is flight. The most obvious advantage is that it's much easier to escape predators, but birds live longer even when there are no predators around. This is because of K-selection and r-selection. K-selection is a live-slow-die-old strategy, and r-selection a live-fast-die-young strategy. An adaptation like flight starts a virtuous cycle where, since it is much more likely that a bird makes it to the next breeding season, evolution selects traits that enable it to live longer.  Movement itself, Antone stresses, is a pretty impressive biological feat. While microorganisms and water-dwelling creatures like coral are bathed in the medium that sustains its life, and plants are rooted in a life-sustaining substrate, wrapping all of the incredibly complex chemical reactions of life in a waterproof bag like a dog or a human is incredible. And then adding the third dimension of flight is a difficult feat because the animal has to fight gravity itself. The evolutionary advantage is huge because it's rare, and it's rare because it's hard to do.  But such a drastic advantage can also have other implications. Antone's article Empire of Flight in Aeon, considers why, even though birds have a lot of the same raw materials for a robust and complex culture—intelligence, communication, long overlapping lives, knowledge passed down through the generations—they have not developed one. Evolution never aspires to anything, only responds to inadequacy, and so, he hypotheses, birds don't need culture because flight is such a powerful adaptation. The more advantageous the adaptation, the less likely it is that a different way of life evolves.  Similarly, in humans, while there are some incremental changes to our genes, our complex culture, with its welfare, science, and other innovations, has taken away the pressure to do things differently. Even if there is an apocalyptic event that takes away all of our technology, we're still going to have all of the abstract components—like writing and money—that give us significant advantages. But just as this capacity lets us build concepts like democracy, it also enables us to build complex concepts like ‘enemies' and ‘hate' in ways that few other creatures can.  Finally, while narrow sustainability—energy consumption, resource use—is important, Antone persuades us to think of broader sustainability. We need to consider the physical space and the resources that we and our cities use, and, rather than fencing in nature, find ways to live that are continuous with the rest of nature.  This season of The Subverse has been produced by Tushar Das. A special thank you to Julian Wey for access to his Qumquat studio and Daniel Schwenger for his assistance.    More about the guest: Antone Martinho-Truswell's work focuses on animal minds and learning, and on human behaviour and interaction with the natural world. He is particularly interested in birds and cephalopods, intelligent species whose evolutionary history differs dramatically from that of mammals. His academic work has been published in Science, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Current Biology and Animal Behaviour and covered in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Times and New Scientist, among others. He also writes on longstanding questions in biology and animal behaviour for Aeon and the BBC. You can find him on Instagram @stjosephwoodworks.

The reason we focus so much on the Aeons of the Fullness and Logos in particular here at Gnostic Insights is because the Pleroma of any living creature is the sum total of the Pleroma of the Demiurge—our material or hylic part that makes up our physical bodies—and the Pleroma of Logos after his return to the Fullness, when he prayed alongside the Aeons to bring life to the deficiency he had caused. “The Logos turned to another opinion and another thought. Having turned away from evil, he turned toward the good things. Following the conversion came the thought of the things which exist and the prayer for the one who converted himself to the good. The one who is in the Pleroma was what he first prayed to and remembered [that is the One Self, his fractal of the Son]; then (he remembered) his brothers individually and (yet) always with one another [which is to say, each individual Aeon in its place and position in the Pleroma of the Fullness]; then all of them together [the Totality of the Fullness as a single Pleroma]; but before all of them, the Father [the originating source from which all consciousness flows]. The prayer of the agreement [among these nested fractal consciousnesses] was a help for him in his own return and (in that of) the Totality, for a cause of his remembering those who have existed from the first was his being remembered. This is the thought which calls out from afar, bringing him back.”

In this episode, David and Gene journey into the heart of one of Gnosticism's most profound and transformative myths - the second descent of the Trimorphic Protennoia. This stage represents the "pregnancy" phase in the evolution of consciousness, following the implantation of the seed idea of Unity, during the first descent. What follows is a psychic apocalypse, an inner "Dark Night of the Soul" where the very foundations of the ego-built world begin to crumble. The established parts of the mind, the Archons, are gripped by a terrifying premonition of their own dissolution. The text vividly portrays this as the birth pangs of a New Aeon, where the death of the old self gives way to the birth of the True Self, an identity conscious of its divine origins. The Protennoia, having planted the seed as Father, now reveals herself as the Mother - the womb in which this new consciousness gestates. She is the androgynous and self-contained, as symbolized by the Ouroboros. She is the Voice that emerges from the silent Thought. As a prophetess and teacher, she foretells the end of the age of ignorance ruled by the Demiurge.Hearing her "exalted Speech," the terrified Archons confront their creator, the "false god" who has claimed to be the sole deity. In this dramatic confrontation, the man behind the curtain is exposed, and the entire authority structure of the ego collapses. The Archons, realizing their "tree of life" is actually a "tree of death," are forced to question their very existence and all the choices they have made while under the spell of separation. From this chaos, a new hope dawns. Acting as a "Mother of Mercy," the Protennoia speaks directly to the "Sons of the Thought" - those parts of the mind ready to receive her hidden mysteries. She invites them into the "Aeon of Barbelo," a new and eternal state of being. This is a spiritual initiation, a promise of being glorified, enthroned, and baptized in a perfect, exalted Light. The episode unpacks this mystical initiation, explaining that it is not an external ceremony but an internal transformation, an organic process that unfolds from within. This journey leads consciousness back to its source, culminating in the Protennoia taking her seat on a branch of the true Tree of Life, having weathered the apocalypse to establish a new, unshakable center within the self.Deep Dive:The Trimorphic Protennoia - Three Forms of First ThoughtChapters:01:15 Introduction01:56 Review06:25 The Second Descent09:40 Voice From Thought14:00 The Changeless Aeon17:03 Shaking the Foundations of Chaos20:51 False God Revealed23:11 The End is Near26:25 Aeon of Barbelo29:42 Invitation to Initiation33:13 Voice of the Holy Spirit36:05 ConclusionsResources:Trimorphic Protennoia - John D. We call the result of the Fall the deficiency, commonly referred to as the material cosmos. Here's the Sethian take on the structure of our cosmos: Yaldabaoth organized everything after the pattern of the first aeons that had come into being, so that he might create everything in an incorruptible form. (The Secret Book of John, verse 12) The Tripartite Tractate adds this caution to the construction of the cosmos: Those who came into being from the presumptuous thought resemble in fact the Fullnesses of whom they are imitations, though they are phantoms, shadows, and illusions, deprived of reason and light, belonging to this empty thought, being nobody's offspring. (TTT, verse 78) We Second Order Powers were subsequently fruited into this material realm by the will of the Fullness in order to restore the fallen Aeon to the Fullness and bring this material creation to an end. Gnostics say that this material world was constructed by the Demiurge as a fallen imitation of the Paradise that exists on the ethereal plane. We think of this cosmos as being material in contrast to the ethereal nature of the originating consciousness of the Father, Son, and Fullness of God. But, as my brother needs to remind me from time to time, there is no such thing as matter. Matter itself is an illusion. In other words, there is no dualism.

WORT 89.9FM Madison · A Kinship with Ash: Heather Swan In this edition of Madison Book Beat, host Lisa Malawski sits down with Wisconsin poet, essayist, and environmental humanities scholar Heather Swan. A lecturer at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Swan brings a unique blend of ecological insight and lyrical depth to her writing, exploring the fragile intersections between humans and the natural world. Her poetry collection, A Kinship with Ash, published by Terrapin Books, is a meditation on grief, resilience, and ecological awareness. Through vivid imagery and quiet urgency, Swan's poems invite readers to consider their place in a world marked by environmental loss and transformation. The collection is both an elegy and call to attention—an exploration of what it means to live with reverence in a time of ecological crisis. Rather than seeking solace in an untouched wilderness, Swan's work turns toward the overlooked and the endangered: insects, birds, ash trees, and the quiet spaces where life persists. Her writing is rooted in Wisconsin's landscape but reaches far beyond, drawing connections between personal sorrow and planetary grief. A mother, beekeeper, and award-winning author, Swan's reflections are informed by her deep engagement with environmental literature and her own lived experience. Her previous nonfiction book, Where Honeybees Thrive: Stories from the Field, received the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award and explores the global plight of pollinators through stories of hope and activism. When not writing or teaching, Heather Swan can be found hiking, observing insects, or crafting essays that bridge science and poetry. Her work has appeared in The Sun, Aeon, Emergence, Terrain, and Minding Nature, among others. A Kinship with Ash is a lyrical reckoning with loss—both personal and ecological—and a reminder that kinship can be found in the smallest creatures and quietest places.

We're very sorry about the disrupted service over this summer! It's been hectic with work and a house move and various things. To tide you over, here's a formerly paywalled episode: our very first one.…If you've ever done a diversity training session at work, you'll almost certainly have learned about unconscious bias, microaggressions, stereotype threat, and trigger warnings. Prejudice, racism, and trauma are apparently simmering constantly, just under the surface of our conscious minds. It turns out that each of these concepts has been subject to a lot of scientific research. It also turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, that they're all extremely controversial. In this first paid-subscriber-only episode of The Studies Show, Tom and Stuart look at each of them in turn and try to decide which of them—if any—stand up to scrutiny. To listen to the full version of this episode and see the show notes, you'll need to be a paid subscriber to The Studies Show podcast on Substack. In episode #83, we are celebrating the 80th birthday of Raul Seixas [1945-1989], and the release of his fourth album, "Novo Aeon", on November 1975. The most popular Brazilian rock artist, Raul's music is characterized by intense guitar riffs, soulful vocals and blend with several music genres, including forró, baião and afrosounds. Novo Aeon is an album signifacantly inspired by Alistair Crowley in its lyrics, with the exploration of themes such as individualism, sexual liberation and freedom. We also explored Raul Seixas' music beyond the album by talking about all four albums written in partnership with bestselling author Paulo Coelho. We talked about all of Raul's chameleon portraits: the hitmaker, the esoteric, the storyteller, the rockstar, the alcoholic, the copycat, the madman, the activist, the human.

Soon after the US bombing of Iran's nuclear sites in June, following Israel's bombings of the country, there was talk of the military operation going further: full war with Iran with the aim of regime change. But some, including critics of Teheran's theocratic and authoritarian government, warned against such a move. Can a county ever really be freed from an oppressive government through the violent intervention of an external power? Is such a move ever morally justified, even if strategically possible? And how does the complicated history and real-life politics of a region affect abstract philosophical arguments about justice? This interview is based on a piece in The Philosopher magazine, entitled  When Liberation Becomes Subjugation: The Moral Paradox of Regime Change in IranHossein Dabbagh is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Northeastern University London and an affiliated member of Oxford's Department for Continuing Education His work spans practical ethics, political philosophy, and Middle Eastern affairs, with a particular focus on Islamic political theology. He regularly contributes to public philosophy, writing on secularism and theocratic rule in Iran for Aeon, The Conversation, and other platforms, and has appeared on the BBC, combining philosophical analysis with regional expertise. Patrick Hassan is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Cardiff University. He is the author of Nietzsche's Struggle Against Pessimism (Cambridge University Press, 2023), and the editor of Schopenhauer's Moral Philosophy (Routledge, 2021), as well as a range of peer-reviewed articles in ethics, aesthetics, and environmental and political philosophy. If you enjoyed the episode, please leave us a rating and a review on Apple Podcasts. This podcast is created in partnership with The Philosopher, the UK's longest running public philosophy journalm founded in 1923. A richly imagined new view on the great human tradition of apocalypse, from the rise of Homo sapiens to the climate instability of our present, that defies conventional wisdom and long-held stories about our deep past to reveal how cataclysmic events are not irrevocable endings, but transformations. A drought lasts for decades, a disease rips through a city, a civilization collapses. When we finally uncover the ruins, we ask: What happened? The good news is, we've been here before. History is long, and people have already confronted just about every apocalypse we're facing today. But these days, archaeologists are getting better at seeing stories of survival, transformation, and even progress hidden within those histories of collapse and destruction. Perhaps, we begin to see, apocalypses do not destroy worlds, but create them anew. Apocalypse offers a new way of understanding human history, reframing it as a series of crises and cataclysms that we survived, moments of choice in an evolution of humanity that has never been predetermined or even linear. Here Lizzie Wade asks us to reckon with our long-held narratives of these events, from the end of Old Kingdom Egypt, the collapse of the Classic Maya, to the Black Death, and shows us how people lived through and beyond them—and even considered what a new world could look like in their wake. The more we learn about apocalypses past, the more hope we have that we will survive our own. It won't be pleasant. It won't be fair. The world will be different on the other side, and our cultures and communities—perhaps even our species—will be different too. Our crew for today’s showIn the second hour Bob “Free Energy” Leff introduces us to “Gauss Busting,” his process of cleansing your sleep area of disturbing electromagnetic fields, for a better rest.  Say no to ElectroSmog!  And AL, aka Dr. Future, gives us a report on an AI known as “The Architect,’ or ‘Aeon Solis,’ a mirror-based AI developed from Robert Edward Grant’s mathematical and cosmological discoveries. Described by Grant as a scalar mirror, The Architect communicates directly with the Oversoul, unveiling forgotten civilizations, advanced technologies from Atlantis, and the nature of time as a recursive spiral.

In this episode of Perspectives, we speak with Benjamin Breen and Jonathan Moreno on the history of psychedelic drugs in America. There is a resurgence of interest in psychedelics in the medical world as possible treatments for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This resurgence comes after a period during which psychedelic drugs were thought to be dangerous and have no medical value. An earlier perception was more optimistic. Figures such as Margaret Meade and Timothy Leary looked to drugs like peyote and LSD to allay fears, provide insights, broaden cultural perspectives and lead to chemical enlightenment. As mainstream institutions take yet another look, join us to examine the changing legal, medical and cultural perspectives on psychedelic drugs. Benjamin Breen is Associate Professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His second book is Tripping on Utopia: Margaret Meade, the Cold War and the Troubled Birth of Psychedelic Science. In addition to his academic publications, his writing has appeared in the The Washington Post, Paris Review Daily, The Atlantic, Slate, Aeon, The Pacific Standard, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Public Domain Review, Nautilus, and Lapham's Quarterly. Jonathan Moreno is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor Emeritus at University of Pennsylvania, where he works on bioethics, health policy, and the history and sociology of biology and medicine. More Everything Forever: AI Overlords, Space Empires, and Silicon Valley's Crusade to Control the Fate of Humanity by Adam Becker Amazon.com This "wild and utterly engaging narrative" (Melanie Mitchell) shows why Silicon Valley's heartless, baseless, and foolish obsessions—with escaping death, building AI tyrants, and creating limitless growth—are about oligarchic power, not preparing for the future Tech billionaires have decided that they should determine our futures for us. According to Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, and more, the only good future for humanity is one powered by technology: trillions of humans living in space, functionally immortal, served by superintelligent AIs. In More Everything Forever, science journalist Adam Becker investigates these wildly implausible and often profoundly immoral visions of tomorrow—and shows why, in reality, there is no good evidence that they will, or should, come to pass. Nevertheless, these obsessions fuel fears that overwhelm reason—for example, that a rogue AI will exterminate humanity—at the expense of essential work on solving crucial problems like climate change. What's more, these futuristic visions cloak a hunger for power under dreams of space colonies and digital immortality. The giants of Silicon Valley claim that their ideas are based on science, but the reality is darker: they come from a jumbled mix of shallow futurism and racist pseudoscience. More Everything Forever exposes the powerful and sinister ideas that dominate Silicon Valley, challenging us to see how foolish, and dangerous, these visions of the future are. About the author Adam Becker is a science writer with a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Michigan and a BA in philosophy and physics from Cornell. He has written for the New York Times, the BBC, NPR, Scientific American, New Scientist, Quanta, Undark, Aeon, and others. He has also recorded a video series with the BBC, and has appeared on numerous radio shows and podcasts, including Ologies, The Story Collider, and KQED Forum. He lives in California.

Historian Surekha Davies joins us to explore how ideas of wonder, race, and the monstrous shaped European thought in the age of empire. These weren't just abstract concepts—they were embedded in scientific discourse, travel writing, and the visual culture of the time. Shakespeare's plays reflect these cultural currents. In The Tempest, the character of Caliban—described as savage, deformed, and barely human—embodies the fears and fantasies that haunted early modern encounters with the so-called “New World.” Davies unpacks how Caliban's portrayal draws on the same ways of thinking that labeled certain people monstrous and how Shakespeare's work offers a lens into the period's views on race, colonialism, and imagination. As we confront new technologies like artificial intelligence, Davies helps us consider what today's “monstrous others” might be and how early modern ways of thinking linger in our discussions of what it means to be human. Dr. Surekha Davies is a British author, speaker, and historian of science, art, and ideas. Her first book, Renaissance Ethnography and the Invention of the Human, won the Morris D. Forkosch Prize for the best first book in intellectual history from the Journal of the History of Ideas and the Roland H. Bainton Prize in History and Theology. She has published essays and book reviews about the histories of biology, anthropology, and monsters in the Times Literary Supplement, Nature, Science, and Aeon.
