Co-hosts Peterson Toscano (he/him) and Miche McCall (they/them) explore concepts of spiritual optimism and pessimism while navigating turbulent times. The episode features Adrian Glamorgan, who suggests Quakers can stay grounded and act faithfully during difficult times by embracing devotion. Additionally, we highlight the life of Minerva Hoyt, a pioneering conservationist who played a pivotal role in establishing Joshua Tree National Park. Optimism and Pessimism: A Quaker elder shares lessons for staying steady in turmoil. Miche chats with Adrian Glamorgan, a longtime activist who, before becoming a Quaker, powered his work through anger.  He provides insights for young activists who face growing challenges. How do we stay strong and steady in the face of human cruelty and violence?  Glamorgan also talks about the Quaker concept of "New Creation," a vision of the world marked by human potential for good, cooperation, peace, and interconnectedness with the environment. While achieving New Creation might take time, it can serve as a compass, guiding Quakers toward a better future. He shares how, even in the nuts and bolts of serving on a committee or task force, we can find meaningful connections.  Adrian Glamorgan wrote the article “The Devoted Path: Holding Fast to the Promise of New Creation.” It appears in the December 2024 issue of Friends Journal and at FriendsJournal.org.  Adrian Glamorgan is a member of Western Australian Regional Meeting and Fremantle Recognised Meeting. He serves as the executive secretary of the Asia-West Pacific Section of Friends World Committee for Consultation, supporting the Section's diverse yearly meetings, groups, fellowships, and communities of interest, such as Quaker learning, peace, climate, and language inclusion.  The Quaker Simplicity of Talking to God Pradip Lamichhane from Bhaktapur Evangelical Friends Church in Nepal emphasizes that Quakers don't need elaborate rituals or intermediaries to connect with the divine. Talking to God can be as simple as expressing gratitude, a practice of thanking God upon waking up and before sleeping. George Fox's teaches that God resides within, Pradip encourages us to look inward for peace and blessings.  You will find the full video featuring Pradip Lamichhane and other QuakerSpeak videos at the QuakerSpeak YouTube channel, or visit Quakerspeak.com.  Book Review Cactus Queen: Minerva Hoyt Establishes Joshua Tree National Park, written by Lori Alexander and illustrated by Jenn Ely. Cactus Queen tells the story of Minerva Hoyt, a pioneering conservationist who played a crucial role in protecting the Mojave Desert's unique ecosystem; her efforts in 1936 led to the preservation of over 825,000 acres of desert. The book provides supplemental information about Minerva Hoyt's life, the various plants and animals of Joshua Tree National Park, and guidance for young environmental activists. Desert Cactus is recommended for readers aged 7 to 10 and is available as a hardcover or an eBook. Read Tom and Sandy Farley's Friends Journal review. Read more Friends Journal book reviews. Quotes “If someone's got a passion for ballet, F1, or being a horticulturist, a teacher, or an accountant, follow your passion. Better still, follow your leading as it arises because that will be part of the solution.” - Adrian Glamorgan  “I'm not advocating Quaker for health purposes, but actually, it's quite healthy to do.” - Adrian Glamorgan  “Silence is a power of many things. The silence will stop the war, silence will restart the joy, and the silence will restart the love.” - Pradip Lamichhane Question for next month: What are some unexpected ways you find yourself drawn to repair? How and when have you found joy and meaning in mending things?  In a world that often prioritizes the new, do you mend clothes, address debt, work toward restorative justice, or repair damaged relationships? All Things Considered

As part of the BBC “Be Scam Safe” campaign, Rosa Hunt and guests examine the impact the growing scale of scams has on the way we see the world around us. A recent survey by the Good Faith Partnership and the University of Birmingham's Jubilee Centre found that honesty is the most important virtue for all religious groups, yet on a daily basis we are encouraged to be suspicious that the text messages, phone calls or emails we receive could be fraudulent. It's estimated that in the UK ten billion pounds each year are stolen by fraudsters. But what impact does learning to be distrustful have on us? Are people of faith more susceptible to being scammed? Rosa is joined by three guests: Professor Keith Jones leads the national research into financial fraud and scams with the Trading Standards Institute and their National Scams Team. He's a Christian, has a background in social work and specialises in the safeguarding vulnerable adults. Katharine Gray is the founder and director of Friends First, a Christian dating agency, and she shares insights into how to prevent romance fraud. Phil Swann explores the theology around honesty and trust. Phil is the pastoral director of the Evangelical Movement of Wales and the pastor of Llanelli Free Evangelical Church. We hear from Trading Standards officer Sarah Thomas-Grant who shares the current scams identified in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Steve Bumford, a Safeguarding officer in the Major Investigations Team in the Vale of Glamorgan, offers insights into a case of romance fraud. In this episode, hosts Josh Kennedy and James Breese are joined by former England cricketer and Glamorgan captain, Steve James. With a career spanning 17 seasons and expertise in both cricket and rugby, Steve shares his experiences, insights, and personal journey from professional cricket to coaching. You'll Learn:Steve emphasizes how maintaining fitness impacts both physical and mental stamina, reflecting on his disciplined approach to running between wickets and long innings. The mental challenges of batting, how to handle failure, and the significance of turning the “volume” up or down when concentrating at the crease.Steve's philosophy on coaching, emphasizing helping individuals rather than dictating, and how conversations guide players toward self-improvement.Steve explains the evolution of batting techniques and how modern cricketers can learn from fundamentals while incorporating new styles.Key Takeaways:For Steve, fitness was not just physical but a mental tool that allowed him to push through long innings and challenging opponents. His routine of extra training and running helped prepare him for big scores.Whether in Test or T20 formats, Steve believes mastering head and hands fundamentals is key to hitting the ball more consistently, no matter the format or technique.Steve's philosophy of taking one ball at a time helped him overcome the pressure of expectations. Staying focused on the moment was crucial in building long innings. One of the standout lessons from Steve is to let players figure out their own path while offering guidance. This approach fosters a deeper understanding and ownership of their game. From learning to switch between focus and relaxation to dealing with personal struggles, Steve's journey shows how cricket requires mental strength both on and off the field.Quotes:"You can only play one ball at a time—focus on that, and the big scores will come.""Coaching isn't about dictating, it's about helping each individual find their own way.""Batting is a game of failure—you need to learn how to handle it and come back stronger."Find Steve James on:The TimesFind James on: Instagram: @jamesbreese Twitter: @_jamesbreese To learn more about Cricket Matters and download your FREE copy of The High-Performance Handbook, please visit www.cricketmatters.com

In a live edition from the BBC Radio Theatre in London, Woman's Hour examines how children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, or SEND, as it is called in England, are supported in school. In Scotland the system is called ASN, Additional Support Needs; In Wales it's ALN, Additional Learning Needs; In Northern Ireland it is known as the SEN register, that is the Special Educational Needs Register. The programme is about children and young people who need extra support to learn, and the mothers trying to access it for them. The children may be autistic, have ADHD, or be a wheelchair user. Some may have learning disabilities, or be blind, deaf, or dyslexic. They all have a legal right to an education just like any other child. Woman's Hour had an overwhelming response from the mothers of these children to say that the system is beyond broken. That has led to a crisis in their, and their children's lives. Carolyn Atkinson, Woman's Hour reporter, shares the results of a poll specially commissioned for the programme. Nuala McGovern talks to Kellie Bright, an actress in EastEnders who is also mum to a child with SEND; Katie, a 17 year old girl with SEND who feels she was let down by the system and is now campaigning for a better one; Catriona Moore, Policy Manager from IPSEA (Independent Provider of Special Education Advice); Catherine McKinnell, Minister for School Standards; Marsha Martin, the founder and CEO of Black SEN Mamas; Chloe Davies, a SEN teacher in a state special school in the Vale of Glamorgan and who previously worked in a mainstream school; Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza; and mums of children with SEND Samantha and Kirsti.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Reporter: Carolyn Atkinson Producer: Carolyn Atkinson and Rebecca Myatt

In light of the discovery of a rare medieval cemetery in the Vale of Glamorgan, Azim Ahmed explores funerary customs today. Dr Andy Seaman, a specialist in early medieval archaeology from the University of Cardiff, shares his findings on location at the archaeological dig site near Fonmore Castle. While graveyards might be seen as quiet reflective places today, Andy explains that in the medieval period they were often central to life and where communities might meet to undertake business, meetings and even feasting. Dr Marianne Rozario from the Christian think tank Theos shares the conclusions from their recent report ‘Ashes to Ashes: Beliefs, Trends and Practices in dying, death and the Afterlife.' Key findings are a growing trend towards cremation rather than burial in the UK and a rise of “celebrations of life” over traditional funerals. Author, eulogy speechwriter, and funeral celebrant Pete Billingham explains how the growth of ‘Direct Cremations' is changing the way we remember those we've loved and lost, and how the digital age is shaping the modern landscape of memorial services. Near Llandaff Weir Vimla Patel shows Azim a new multi-faith ash scattering site in the River Taff. It's the first site of its kind in Wales and offers Hindus and Sikhs the opportunity to scatter the ashes of their loved ones near the place they call home. Traditionally ashes would be scattered in India's holiest river, the Ganges, but Vimla explains that for second and third generation members of the Sikh and Hindu communities many would prefer ashes to be scattered in Wales. Supporting Humanity is an award-winning charity providing mental health and bereavement support. Since the Covid pandemic they've been running workshops and tutorials to train younger members of the Muslim community the traditional Muslim funeral ritual of Ghusl. In the Islamic tradition it is important that burial takes place as quickly as possible and that the body should be washed and dressed before so. Trustee Sumaiya Khoda and CEO and founder Idris Patel share how they've been overwhelmed with the interest and dedication shown by the young people they work with. Details of organisations offering information, advice and support with bereavement are available at www.bbc.co.uk/actionline.

She achieved B.A.C.P accreditation which she held until she retired from the profession. Moving from London to the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales brought Iona a more relaxed, creative life. Her long-held dream of sharing a vision of beauty, harmony, peace, and wisdom through creative, mystical writing began to blossom into reality when she won a competition for her first self-published collection of poetry and reflections, followed by descriptive prose showcased in Kindred Spirit Magazine and poems published in various editions of Touchstone.  A passionate interest in personal and spiritual growth spanning many years has inspired Iona's exploration of Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies and practices, the idea of a language of angels, as a stream of inspiration, creative wisdom, and beauty, flowing through everything, the energies of sacred sites both at home and abroad, and labyrinth walking. After meditating with Tibetan Buddhists in London, then studying mindfulness with Samye Ling Wales and the Mindfulness Association, Iona finally found her spiritual home with the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids. She is also a Companion of Chalice Well, supporting the Trust's ethos of "Many Paths One Source."  Exploring growth and change through her creativity, Iona's path of art and soul is inspired by angels, wisdom, nature, land, and legend, living by the sea on the south coast of magical Wales. This week, Azim Ahmed's guest is a senior figure in the Church in Wales. The Right Reverend Mary Stallard, currently the Assistant Bishop of Bangor, has just been elected as the 73rd Bishop of Llandaff – a post she'll take up in sometime in the spring. The Diocese of Llandaff covers nearly half the Christian population in Wales, including parts of Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and some of the Valleys. Bishop Mary was one of the first women to be ordained as a priest in the Church in Wales in 1997. Since then she has served a number of clerical posts in all corners of the country. For the past twenty years she's worked in the north, in both the St Asaph and Bangor dioceses where she's held a number of senior roles. Five years ago she was appointed Archdeacon of Bangor and then almost twelve months ago was made the Assistant Bishop there. Bishop Mary's voice is familiar to many listeners in Wales; in the past she's also presented a number of All Things Considered programmes. In the first radio interview since her election, Bishop Mary talks to Azim about her early life and career, about relationships with non-Christian faiths, young people, and the role of a bishop, not least in speaking out on topical issues, of which in her view, the biggest is concern about the environment.
