Today we are talking to me, Jeffrey Hart, designer and builder of the biophilic tiny house. This is the Christmas special, and so is a light-hearted chat with some mince pies and mulled wine. We talked for 4 hours, and edited down to just shy of 3 hours! In this episode, we discuss why I wanted to build a tiny home, small living, how to find the land, design considerations, budget, windows, materials, the design process, technical details and biophilic design. Ben Adam-Smith worked in TV and radio for 15 years. With a growing concern about the environment, he wanted to play his part in looking for solutions. As our homes are probably the biggest part of our carbon footprint he started there. He set up a podcast called House Planning Help and documented what he learnt as he went about his own Passivhaus project. A decade on and his website is going from strength to strength. He also launched a membership community called The Hub to help others who want to build high performance, low carbon homes. Ben is passionate about the environment and believes with wise decisions about how we live our lives we can all make a difference. Passive House podcaster extraordinaire and personality Ben Adam-Smith of House Planning Help joins Passive House Podcast cohost Matthew Cutler-Welsh for an entertaining conversation about how Ben came to his focus on Passive House, his burgeoning communications treasure trove at House Planning Help's "The Hub", his observations about Passive House adoption in the UK, and the secrets behind his Passive House communications superpowers. Ben started his career in radio and TV production, including a stint as a radio presenter. But when he embarked on a journey to create an "eco" home for his family, he recognized the need for easier-to-find and easier-to-access info about sustainable design and construction. So he pivoted and launched a podcast about that journey. That podcast expanded to video content, a website, and now, The Hub. Listen to the interview to learn more! After the interview, Matthew and cohost Zack Semke refer to a series of upcoming events that can be found here: https://passivehouseaccelerator.com/articles/passive-house-week-in-preview-feb-22
In 2012 Ben Adam-Smith founded House Planning Help to collect and share all the information he started to learn on the way to designing and building his own home. His mission is to encourage people towards the "...houses we should be building in the 21st Century." Six years on, Ben and his family are enjoying their very own Passive House.
Ben Adam-Smith's house build was a core part of House Planning Help. Having completed the project in 2018, Ben Adam-Smith looks at what should come next. Check out the show notes for more information.
