Combining the thrill of exploration in those old school games with modern sensibilities, Legend of Grimrock 2 is one of the best RPGs I've ever played, and I couldn't wait to discuss it on the show. Hey there, it's Dave Jackson, and in this episode, I'm exploring what we, as podcasters and content creators, can learn from none other than Barbra Streisand—specifically, the infamous "Streisand effect." What Does It Mean?If you've ever wondered what that term means, I break down the story behind it, starting with a 2003 lawsuit involving her Malibu home and how trying to hide something can actually make it go viral.Be Careful What You Try to "Ban"I share my own experiences dealing with promotion in podcasting, including the challenges that come with companies making big promises about starting your podcast and, yes, my mixed feelings about Spotify's practices in the early days. I also talk about how, as much as we sometimes want to warn our audiences loudly about something, we might end up giving it more attention than it deserves. You'll hear a few stories from my past, like the time with Podshow and an NDA, and what I've learned about arguing with trolls or competitors. Bottom line: sometimes pushing back just amplifies the thing you're trying to keep quiet! As always, if you need help with your podcast, I'd love to work with you. A live-sung medley that actually left us breathless. That's how Lainey Wilson opened a CMA night that felt tighter, braver, and more fun than it's been in years—and yes, she backed it up with Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, and Female Vocalist. We talk about why her solo hosting worked, how she commanded the stage with eight outfit changes, and what her wins say about where country music is heading. We dig into performances that sparked debate, especially Chris Stapleton solo versus his duet with Miranda Lambert—great song, flawless execution, but does it fit either brand? The Red Clay Strays brought harmonies that surprised us with an Arctic Monkeys vibe, raising a bigger question about identity: when southern bands don't claim “country,” yet chart on country formats, is that healthy expansion or a nudge to fit the market? Along the way, we celebrate pros who hold the scene together—Paul Franklin's Musician of the Year nod and a heartfelt tribute to Vince Gill's mentorship and humility. Then we zoom out. Are labels signing too many TikTok artists who can't deliver live? How much do charts really matter now—less for artists, more for songwriters? We compare A-players in the studio to road bands on tour, why some artists are skipping the “Nashville session” model, and how remote recording and AI risk eroding that full-room magic where eight players breathe together. You'll also hear a lively news round-up, a chart countdown, candid listener mailbag on genre blending and economics, and a hilarious community game: ruin a band name by changing one letter. This is the 68th episode in my drug pronunciation series. In this episode, I divide Journavx and suzetrigine into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share my sources. The written pronunciations are below and in the show notes on https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com. Special thanks to Kelly Glynn at Vertex Pharmaceuticals for nominating Journavx for this episode.   Note: we don't cover pharmacology in this series. Just pronunciations.   Journavx = jur-NAV-ix jur, like Journey (Bringing Journavx to market was a long journey ~27 years.) NAV, which is the name of the voltage-gated sodium channel that Journavx blocks. Journavx blocks NAV 1.8. ix, like "fix." Emphasize NAV. The written pronunciation came from tweaking the written pronunciation in the Patient Information section of the prescribing information for Journavx (accessed 11-25-2025).  My source for the spoken pronunciation is journavx.com. Click the small *speaker* symbol next to the word "Journavx" on the landing page to hear the pronunciation. As an alternative, listen to the videos on journavx.com and journavxhcp.com (accessed 11-25-25).   Suzetrigine = soo-ZE-tri-jeen soo, as in Journavx soothes pain ZE,  like zest tri, like trigger jeen, like the word "gene" (as in genetic) Emphasize the second syllable, "ZE."  My source for the written pronunciation is the American Medical Association's website. Special thanks to Simran at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Global Medical Information Department for helping me find the written pronunciation!  The spoken pronunciation of suzetrigine can be heard in the MOA video on journavxhcp.com (accessed 11-25-25).   If you know someone who would like to learn how to say Journavx or suzetrigine, please share this episode with them. A quintessential flawed game that everyone should try, Asura's Wrath overcomes its bad combat and dated approach to player engagement by just simply being cooler and more hype than basically every other game. Hey, it's Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting! In this episode, I dive into what truly delivers value to your podcast audience—drawing inspiration from an episode of the Novel Marketing podcast hosted by my buddy, Thomas Umstattd Jr..As I was driving to PodIndy, I caught myself sharing Thomas Umstattd Jr.'s episode with friends, and it hit me: why was this episode good enough for me to recommend? Today, I'm breaking down the answer to that question and sharing snippets of what I like to call "value bombs," even if that phrase is a bit cringey. Here's what I cover:Why knowing your audience inside and out is key to delivering value. How answering your audience's burning questions (like Thomas does) keeps them tuning in.The importance of overdelivering—smothering your audience in value so they want to share your show. Why direct recommendations from listeners are more powerful than any algorithm.Examples of how Thomas Umstattd Jr. teases upcoming content to keep listeners coming back. How sharing personal stories alongside expertise can connect with your audience. The role of hands-on “boots on the ground” experience versus just listing facts, and how this builds authority. Why saving your audience time or money equals big value.Teasing future episodes and weaving in stories to keep people engaged. The impact of authenticity and showing both sides of a topic. My own experiment comparing human podcasting value to AI research, and why the human touch still wins.A quick review/demonstration of the new Zoom PodTrack P4 Next and my honest thoughts on whether it's worth upgrading from the original P4.Lessons from a membership site migration disaster—and the importance of always having a backup plan for your content.Websites Mentioned:AuthorMedia.com — Home of the Novel Marketing podcast.SchoolofPodcasting.com — My home base for podcasting education.Perplexity AI — An AI research tool I tested for podcasting advice.Sweetwater — For buying podcast and audio gear.Backblaze — Backup service I use for safeguarding files.Voomly — New video host for my membership site.Loom and Tella — Video tools for creating support and course content.Gumroad - Tool to sell digital goods. My big takeaway? To truly deliver value: know your audience, answer their questions, overdeliver, and don't be afraid to share your own stories and expertise. When you save them time, money, or frustration, you make your podcast not only worth listening to—but worth sharing.Takeaways: Delivering value means understanding what your audience actually wants and needs. When you smother your audience in value, they'll be much more likely to share your...

Hey everyone, it's Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting! In today's episode, I sit down with Heidi Kay Begay from Red House Productions (website: redhouseproductions.net) to discuss how you don't need a massive audience to start monetizing your podcast. She reveals practical and inspiring strategies to pitch your value and land meaningful brand relationships, even when your show is still growing.Key Points & TakeawaysYou Don't Need Huge Download Numbers: Heidi Kay Begay shares how she started pitching to sponsors around episode 30 of her niche show, Flute360, and landed deals despite having a small audience.Mindset Shift: Treating your podcast like a business is crucial. I loved Heidi's “corn and wheat” metaphor—don't expect business results if you're just planting hobby seeds!Pitching Sponsors: Heidi describes reaching out directly to music-branded companies—flute makers, apparel, gadgets—and focusing on how to create a win/win relationship from day one. She didn't let her lack of experience or nerves stop her!Focus on Value Over Numbers: Rather than falling for CPM (cost per mille) models, Heidi looked at what brands spend for visibility in her industry—conference booths, event program ads, etc.—and built sponsorship packages (bronze, silver, gold) that reflected that value.Partnership, Not Just Ad Reads: Heidi emphasizes listening to a sponsor's specific goals and showing genuine interest in their needs, often including interview opportunities and co-promotions to make the partnership more meaningful.Negotiation is Key: Most deals aren't signed after one email. Expect lots of back and forth, and be ready to listen and adjust your offer. Don't feel you need everything perfect before you start the conversation.Pricing Sponsorships: Heidi recommends considering not only downloads but also your total digital presence—social media, mailing list, engagement rates, speaking appearances, etc. Sponsors look at much more than just podcast stats.Campaign Tracking & Follow-Up: Not all sponsors require detailed post-campaign stats. Some are satisfied knowing their brand was featured; others want custom URLs to track results. Being organized and professional goes a long way.Dealing with Rejection: Both Heidi and I agree—a “no” today could be a “yes” later. Don't burn bridges, rejection is often just “not now.”AI Music Tools: I shared my experience using Suno (suno.ai), an AI music creation platform, to generate podcast outro music. If you use paid tiers, you own the commercial rights (worth checking out, especially if you need affordable, legal music for your show).Check out Heidi's Course on Monetization.Websites Mentionedredhouseproductions.net – Heidi's podcast production/consulting hub.schoolofpodcasting.com – My site for podcast coaching, resources, and community.suno.ai – AI music creation platform.horseradionetwork.com – Referenced for creative sponsorship strategies.

Hey there, it's Dave Jackson, and in this episode I'm revising the challenge of naming your podcast—a topic I haven't covered since 2019! I share a simple test I use for show names: I tell people the name and ask what they think it's about. If their answer matches my content, I know I'm on the right track.I talk about how it's tempting to get cute with names (like “The Dugout” for a baseball show), but if you skip keywords like “baseball,” your show might not appear in searches. If you want a clever name, adding a clear tagline can help.I also cover practical tips like making sure your podcast name is easy to say and spell. I learned the hard way when I called a show “Podcast FastPass”—it was tricky to pronounce and easily confused. And be wary of names with tricky spellings or multiple possible formats (like “2” vs “two,” or double S's).Don't forget to check if your domain is available—I usually try for a .com, but if that's taken, I recommend adding “show,” “radio,” or “cast” to get a unique domain. And of course, Google your proposed name to see if someone else is already using it.In this episode, I also mention two tools to help brainstorm names: one from PodPage, and a new one from Buzzsprout.Podpage Podcast Name Generatorhttps://www.podpage.com/podcast-name-generator/Buzzsprout Podcast Name Generatorhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/podcast-name-generatorNeed Help With Your Podcast? If you're stuck on names or need help moving forward, come visit me at schoolofpodcasting.com! You Can Be an Influencer Without Being the Best: Lessons from Ace Frehley of Kiss

School of Podcasting

Hey, it's Dave Jackson from School of Podcasting, and in this episode, I look into what podcasters can learn from Ace Frehley of Kiss—even though Ace wasn't the most technically brilliant guitarist, his unique approach made him a massive inspiration for millions. I share how Ace's story relates to how we think about our own podcasting journey. Here are some of the takeaways we can learn from Ace:Be Yourself: Just like Ace was always Ace, when you're podcasting, lean into what makes you unique. Your “superpower” may be simply being authentic and relatable. You Don't Have to Be the Best: Ace wasn't the most technically gifted, but millions saw themselves in him because his style was accessible and inspiring. You don't have to be the smartest or most polished podcaster to make an impact.Find What Sets You Apart: Ace created the iconic smoking guitar—a visual nobody else had. What can you do to stand out in the podcasting space? (it's a hard question)Continuous Improvement: Ace's smoking guitar started as a basic smoke bomb and was improved again and again. Tweak, pivot, and keep making your show better.Know Your Role and Play for the Team: Ace knew his part in Kiss and played what was right for the song, not just what made him look good. As a podcaster, sometimes the best thing is to let your guest or co-host shine.Connect with Your Audience: Ace was famous for taking time with fans, speaking their language, and connecting through his style. Make sure you're speaking your listeners' language and not talking “above” or “below” them.Protect Your Rights: When it comes to business decisions, maintain ownership of your content whenever possible—like Ace leasing his makeup design to Kiss rather than selling it outright.Have Fun and Know When to Walk Away: Ace left Kiss and walked away from millions because it wasn't fun anymore. If your podcast isn't bringing you joy, consider your options.Overcome Setbacks: Ace faced business, creative, and personal struggles but kept moving forward. Don't let challenges stop your podcast journey.Be Innovative and Audience-Focused: Innovation drew attention to Ace, and keeping your audience in mind helps you deliver a show people remember.Mashed Potatoes and AIToday I use the analogy comparing AI-generated content to instant mashed potatoes out of a box. While it's impressive how quickly and easily you can whip something up with AI—just like it's convenient to make mashed potatoes from a box—the outcome usually isn't that memorable. Most of the time, I find myself more amazed by the technology itself than by what it produces.Growing up, my mom tried to make instant mashed potatoes edible by mixing in milk and lots of butter, but honestly, they still couldn't compare to homemade mashed potatoes made from real potatoes, mashed by hand. When you taste those homemade mashed potatoes, it's something you remember—they're just better. The point I wanted to make is that shortcuts like AI (or boxed potatoes) may save time, but when I put in the time to create something myself—from scratch—it always turns out more remarkable and worth sharing with my audience. That's what I strive for in my podcasting: to create something people remember, not just something that's quick and easy.Josh Liston from Sake This had me thinking how I've never shared something created by AI because of the content (maybe because it was cool). The "End" of Unlimited Consulting at the School of PodcastingRecently, I made a change at the School of Podcasting—I've retired the “unlimited...

In honor of the World Series this week, this episode compares the business of pharmacy to the baseball-themed book and movie Moneyball. The full title of the book is Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, by Michael Lewis. The story is about how the Oakland A's baseball team used data and statistics to build a winning team — even on a tight budget. The FULL show notes are on thepharmacistsvoice.com. In this episode, I invite you (my audience) to be part of this conversation. I'm looking for 10 pharmacists (techs, owners, professors, or students) to record up to five minutes of input about how any pharmacy setting can thrive by leveraging pharmacist skills, serving changing patient needs, and optimizing limited resources. If you'd like to be part of my second episode about Moneyball for Pharmacists (I'll call it Moneyball for Pharmacists 2.0), use the contact form on my website to schedule your five-minute interview. My website is www.thepharmacistsvoice.com. Once I have 10 responses, I'll publish Moneyball for Pharmacists 2.0. It will be before my show format changes to monthly in January 2026. The 2025 Pharmacist Authors Series concludes today with my interview with Dr. Sandra O. Onye. She wrote Winning Is in My DNA: 15 Minutes of Self-Reflection (a guided journal). If you have not journaled before, there are examples in the book to get you started in the right direction. If you know someone who is interested in journaling, please share this episode with them.   The Pharmacist Authors Series introduces you to pharmacist authors and their books. The goal of the series is to inspire you to write a book too. Links to the other episodes in this series (2023, 2024, and 2025) are below.   The FULL show notes are on thepharmacistsvoice.com. Click the podcast tab, and find episode 353.   Sandra O. Onye is a pharmacist, author, and military healthcare leader who believes in the power of healing — both inside and out. Serving as a pharmacist in the United States Army, Sandra combines clinical excellence with compassion, helping to advance the health and readiness of those who serve. With a Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and a background in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, she has spent over a decade blending science, service, and soul to transform how people view health and personal growth. Her journey began behind the pharmacy counter, where she discovered that true care goes beyond prescriptions — it's about empowering people to take charge of their well-being. That passion fuels her mission to highlight the vital role pharmacists play in shaping healthier communities and promoting holistic care. Sandra is also the author of “Winning Is in My DNA: 15 Minutes of Self-Reflection,” a guided journal designed to empower readers to slow down, look inward, and celebrate their achievements. Through her work, she continues to inspire others to live intentionally, lead with compassion, and recognize that every day is a chance to win — from the inside out.   Links from this episode  Winning Is in My DNA: 15 Minutes of Self-Reflection (Amazon link) https://amzn.to/48KTtn3  LinkedIn profile for Sandra O. In this episode, Dave Jackson addresses a common question from a Reddit post: "Which are the best podcast websites to post our work and get paid for it?" He dives deep into the realities and mindset of podcasting with a special focus on family projects. Dave emphasizes the importance of enjoying the podcasting journey itself, rather than fixating solely on making money.Key Topics Discussed:Initial Motivations for Podcasting:Dave reacts to people interested in podcasting primarily to get paid, sharing that he personally didn't make money from his podcast for the first three years. The Real Value of Podcasting:Drawing parallels to family game night, Dave highlights the long-term sentimental value of recording family podcasts, describing such memories as “much more valuable than...the .005 cents you will make from someone like Red Circle.”The Journey vs. the Destination:Using a story about driving to his brother's house to admire the changing fall leaves, Dave likens podcasting to enjoying the journey instead of fixating just on the end goal.Practical Podcasting Advice:Dave discusses hosting platforms like Red Circle, Buzzsprout, and Captivate as options for those needing free basic websites, while noting that making money through podcasting typically requires more investment and planning.Skills and Benefits Beyond Monetization:Dave lists numerous benefits to podcasting—improved public speaking, increased confidence, networking, and even unexpected professional opportunities—emphasizing that these skills often precede financial gain.Monetization Mindset:He advises potential podcasters to enter the field with realistic expectations about monetization, noting that it can take years to build an audience substantial enough to generate revenue and that focusing solely on money often leads to podcasters quitting early.Memorable Quotes:“You don't monetize a podcast, you monetize an audience.”“There are all sorts of other benefits besides money when you start a podcast.”Support & Resources:Interested in starting or improving your podcast?
