When you're an expert in something, it's tempting to assume the role of your communication is to deliver something in an academic way. Instruct, advise, and teach. Sometimes, this devolves into shoving a wall of smarts *at* the world. But you need to translate what you know into language that causes others to care. That's something today's guest embraced 10 years ago, and the combination of his ideas and his influence have put him in rare company.Today's guest is David C. Baker, a 7-time author which the New York Times once called "the expert's expert." His business, Punctuation, and his seminal books like The Business of Expertise and Selling Your Professional Service Firm help business owners achieve their next milestones with clarity and confidence. Today, we hear from David about why the EASY part of our work as experts is the insight. They discuss why “random acts of content” are still a trap, how to adapt strategy on shorter timelines, and which fundamentals—brand, positioning, messaging—remain constant. They also touch on shrinking teams, the blurred lines between content and enablement, and why AI might actually give marketers space to be creative again. If you've been posting helpful tips, pouring your heart into your Reels, and still hearing crickets—this one's for you.The real reason service providers don't make more sales on Instagram is not because your offer sucks. It's because you're still trying to help and give "value"… when you should be trying to sell. You need BOTH.You wanna make more sales on Instagram so today let's talk aboutWhy your most generous content doesn't automatically convertThe single line that doubled one client's sales overnightHow to flip your Instagram bio into a client-magnet in under 5 minutesWhat your brother-in-law and your confusing messaging have in commonHow to speak directly to selfish, distracted leads (aka all of us)If you're a service provider trying to grow your business on Instagram, this episode is your no-fluff cheat code. #182 - The Content Marketing Trap (And How To Free Yourself From It)

    Heads Together

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 27, 2025 32:31

Let me be honest with you: what worked in marketing a couple of years ago really isn't working anymore. And if you're someone who's still trying to crack that algorithm, who believes your success is entirely governed by the quality of your content, this probably isn't what you want to hear. But it's true. I'm seeing genuinely brilliant coaches burning themselves out creating endless content. Posting multiple times a day. Creating daily reels. Sophisticated carousel posts. Graphics. Jumping on every trend. And they're just not seeing a return on that massive amount of effort. Here's what's really happening: the coaching industry has created this closed shop of engagement. Your amazing content is mostly being seen by other coaches who are also stuck on the same hamster wheel. Not your actual ideal clients. Content Marketing Still Matters (But It's Only One Piece) I'm not saying content doesn't matter. Of course it does. But it's ONE piece of a marketing ecosystem. Your overall marketing strategy needs to be bigger than just a content strategy if you want to build a business that's sustainable for the long haul. Think of it like this: content marketing is the lighthouse - shining out, hoping to attract your ideal clients. But there's another side to that coin, and it's the one thing that's never stopped working. The thing that cannot be hacked, gamified, or outsourced. Relationship marketing. The searchlight piece where you go out and actively build relationships that lead to clients, collaborators, and introducers. Why Everything Changed Just a few years ago, you could post consistently, use the right hashtags, jump on trending audios, and the algorithm would reward you with visibility. More reach meant more engagement, which led to new followers, discovery calls, and sales. I'm not saying it was easy then, but it was more straightforward. More predictable. There was less noise and a hell of a lot less AI-generated crap clogging up everyone's feeds. Now? Complete opposite. The algorithms change every other week. No one knows what's getting prioritised anymore. Platforms are oversaturated. Our attention spans are tiny. And people are absolutely exhausted from posting constantly without seeing results that match their effort. The uncomfortable truth: If your entire marketing strategy is built on content creation and visibility determined by an algorithm, you're building your business on quicksand. What Actually Works: The 80/20 Flip Here's what I want you to think about: how are you spending your marketing energy right now? If you're spending 80% of your time creating content and 20% building relationships, I want you to flip it completely. Spend 20% of your time creating really good content that genuinely reflects who you are and what you believe. Then spend 80% of your time having actual conversations with people. This looks like: Showing up in DMs When someone sends a genuine connection message, reply with substance. Have an actual conversation. Don't automatically dismiss everyone as a pitch-slapper. Leaving thoughtful comments Not just a thumbs up or heart emoji. Actually show you were interested in what they shared. Ask questions. Be curious about them. Following up with people If someone told you a month ago they were working on something, check back in. Ask how it's going. Show them you remember. Show them you actually give a crap. Remembering what matters When you build real relationships, you remember what each other says. You're not just talking about business, you're connecting as humans. The Three Kinds of Relationships to Build As you're building these connections, think about three types of relationships: Potential clients - people who could work with you Potential collaborators - people you could create with or partner with Potential introducers - people who could refer clients to you Not everyone needs to be a direct client. Build a genuine network across all three categories. But Can This Scale? I hear you. You're thinking, "Gill, this sounds lovely, but I can't have individual conversations with everyone. I need something that works at scale." Here's the thing: as a coach selling high-ticket programs, you absolutely need to be having individual conversations with the right people. If you're in scaling mode with more leveraged offers, then yes, use paid advertising to drive enough traffic to override the algorithm. But for mid to high-ticket coaching? Conversations are non-negotiable. It might not be the magic bullet everyone wants, but I'm telling you the truth. Quality Over Quantity. Always. I'd rather have a smaller, deeply engaged audience than a massive following of people who couldn't give a crap about what I do. If you prioritise relationships over algorithms, your business will grow. Maybe not overnight. Not in a viral explosion. But steadily. Sustainably. In a way that feels good to you. That's what we're all after, isn't it? A business that actually works for us. That feels aligned. That doesn't need us to be someone we're not or do things that drain the life out of us. The answer isn't more content. It's more connection. Trust Is Built Through Connection, Not Clever Content This has always been true. It's just that now it's becoming undeniable. Marketing is a long game. Stop trying to shortcut relationships. Ready to Go Deeper? If this resonated with you, I'm running a workshop on exactly this topic: Relationships Over Algorithms. This is a small group session where we go deep into the foundations of how to build relationships that actually matter and how to bring the whole of who you are to those connections. PNR: This Old Marketing | Content Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose

After celebrating 500 weeks of podcasting, Joe and Robert are back to regular programming. And this week… things get weird. OpenAI and Meta both dropped major updates to their AI apps—releases that could either spark the next great social network or bring about the end of the internet as we know it. The guys break down what these announcements mean for creators, advertisers, and the future of “artificial content.” In other news, Anthropic settles a $1.5 billion lawsuit that could mean payouts for authors everywhere (and a big precedent for copyright in AI). Plus, Call Her Daddy's Alex Cooper launches a new marketing agency that might just be the new business model for content entrepreneurs. And YouTube rolls out auto dubbing for creators and marketers. Joe and Robert debate whether that's a blessing or a curse. This week's winner: CMI's new B2B Research Report. This week's loser: China's growing propaganda machine. Rants and Raves: A look at ABBA Voyage and MrBeast, two very different but equally fascinating examples of what happens when creativity, technology, and obsession collide. ------- This week's sponsor: Did you know that most businesses only use 20% of their data? In this episode of Hustle Inspires Hustle, Alex Quin breaks down practical, actionable strategies to help both e-commerce and service-based businesses succeed during Black Friday. He emphasizes the importance of keeping offers simple—such as clear tiered discounts or urgency-based service upgrades—to reduce friction and improve conversions. Alex stresses that successful marketing goes beyond flashy ads; it's about preparation across your funnel, creative assets, and backend systems. From fast-loading product pages to tight onboarding flows and accurate CRM tracking, every part of the customer journey needs to be ready. He also dives into content strategy and ad execution, encouraging brands to repurpose their top-performing content from earlier in the year with updated Black Friday messaging. Volume matters—especially with Meta's new Andromeda update—so having multiple creatives pre-approved and scheduled can lower costs and reduce last-minute stress. Whether paid or organic, campaigns should be well-structured and tracked meticulously. The core message? Black Friday isn't about hype—it's about execution, efficiency, and data-driven decisions.Episode Outline: [00:00] Welcome Back: Alex thanks listeners and sets up the Black Friday topic [00:15] Importance of Simplicity: Easy-to-understand offers and discounts [00:45] Service Business Tips: Creating urgency with bonuses and intro deals [01:10] Creative Strategy: Bold visuals, testimonials, and multi-format content [01:45] Funnel Tips: Fast product pages, clean checkout, single-action landing pages [02:10] Backend Systems: Fulfillment, calendar space, CRM, and onboarding readiness [02:40] Financial Modeling: Know your margins, track all costs [03:05] Repurposing Content: Use your best-performing content with new Black Friday angles [03:30] Meta Update & Scheduling: More creatives = lower cost; schedule everything early [04:00] Post-Purchase & Tracking: Upsells, LTV, CRM follow-ups, and clean analytics [04:20] Final Thought: Black Friday is about preparation, not just hypeWisdom Nuggets:Simplicity Sells: Your offer should be instantly understandable. Whether it's tiered discounts or bundled services, remove friction—no mental math or coupon codes.Urgency Wins: Black Friday thrives on limited-time offers. Add urgency through countdowns, limited bonuses, or time-sensitive upgrades to drive faster conversions.Prep the Back End: A killer front-end campaign fails without backend support. From ecom fulfillment to service onboarding systems, preparation prevents revenue leaks.Repurpose to Scale: Your best content from earlier in the year is your blueprint. Reuse proven assets with Black Friday messaging instead of creating from scratch.Track Everything or Risk Everything: If your data is off, your scaling efforts will fail. Ensure all pixels, UTMs, and analytics are accurate before campaigns go live.Power Quotes“The key is simplicity. Customers should get it right away.” - Alex Quin“No guessing, no mental math, and no making them type in coupon codes.” - Alex QuinConnect With the Podcast Host Alex Quin:Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/alexquin)Twitter: (https://twitter.com/mralexquin)LinkedIn: (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mralexquin)Website: (https://alexquin.com)TikTok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@mralexquin)Our CommunityInstagram: (https://www.instagram.com/hustleinspireshustle)Twitter: (https://twitter.com/HustleInspires)LinkedIn: (https://www.linkedin.com/company/hustle-inspires-hustle)Website: (https://hustleinspireshustle.com)*This page may contain affiliate links or sponsored content.
