It's been ruled a heartbroken mum grieving the loss of her nine-year-old son unintentionally overdosed on pills prescribed to help her sleep. The beauty therapist from Ashford died just days after the six-month anniversary of the tragic death of her beloved boy, who suffered a fatal asthma attack in November last year. Also in today's podcast, you can hear the moment a knifeman in Chatham was detained by police after he threatened his neighbours for hanging party decorations. Born-worn cameras captured the arrest of the 57-year-old, who'd violently confronted the people in the flat upstairs because he thought they were making too much noise. The KentOnline Podcast has also spoken to the man behind stackable pods that are now in place in Ashford to house homeless people. The 23 units have been described as a “beacon of hope” and will give struggling families a home as we head into Christmas. A rare and vulnerable piece of history in Kent has been added to Historic England's at risk register, in a bid to help preserve it for the future. The site in Dover dates back to 200 AD but was only discovered in the 1970s – but there are fears the building put in place to protect it is deteriorating. And, we'll also let you know which town in Kent has been named as the most affordable in the whole of the south east. The research from an online property website shows you can snap up a house there for well below the regional average price.

The farmer James Rebanks recounts a season he spent on a remote Norwegian island learning the ancient trade of caring for wild Eider ducks and gathering their down. In The Place of Tides he tells the story of Anna, a ‘duck woman' who helped revive this centuries-old tradition. As he traces the rough pattern of her work and her relationship with the wild, Rebanks reassess his own relationship with his Lake District farm, his family and home. Alice Robinson is a designer who has never shied away from the inescapable link between agriculture and luxury fashion. In Field Fork Fashion she looks back at the origins of her chosen material, leather, and traces the full life of Bullock 374 from farm to abattoir, tannery to cutting table. And in retelling this story she asks whether it's possible to create a more transparent, traceable and sustainable system. There are many crafts classified as ‘endangered' in Britain, but one that has had a renaissance in the last 50 years is the ancient tradition of thatching. Protections put in place by Historic England in the 1970s not only kickstarted a thatching revival, but also helped save heritage crop varieties. Andrew Raffle from the National Thatching Association says the relationship with local farmers is vital for the tradition, and there are an estimated 600-900 thatchers working today.Producer: Katy Hickman

Professor Lucy Blue delves into the wreck of The London, a 17th century warship, with diver and licensee Steve Ellis.  The ship exploded and sank in the Thames Estuary in 1665 and was rediscovered in 2005 when a ports authority survey was being conducted.  Since 2010, Steve has been directing the survey of the vessel and recovering artefacts with permission from Historic England.  A Second Rate vessel in the English Navy, The London was carrying 76 guns and a mix of over 300 crew and family readying to join a fleet preparing to fight in the Second Anglo-Dutch War, when tragedy struck. This significant archaeological site offers insights into 17th-century naval warfare, however despite it being a protected wreck of great historic value, there has been little funding or support from government sources. Over 1200 finds have been recovered and Steve will reveal his most recent discovery that is truly remarkable. A special thanks to Mark Beattie-Edwards and the Save the London campaign for their wonderful support in helping to continue to dive this site.  Find out more about the London Shipwreck Project here: https://www.facebook.com/TheLondonShipwreckproject To donate, please visit the project website: https://thelondonshipwreckproject.com/save-the-london/

Farmers this year are growing less oilseed rape than they have for the last 30 years. That is partly due to the expense of growing it, the dreadful wet weather preventing crops getting established, and the fact that it succumbs to the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle. A group in Scotland however are growing it organically - so how do they do it?Thatched buildings are a common sight in many rural areas, but a shortage of seasonal labour, materials and outdated machinery are some of the modern-day challenges facing a thatcher today, according to a report by Historic England which warns that the traditional industry could be at risk. The National Rural Crime Network is calling for an overhaul of the way rural crime is dealt with. It's commissioned a new report which says serious organised criminals are increasingly preying on rural communities and highlights hare coursing, the theft of tractors and livestock and fly tipping as having major impacts. The report from Durham University says these crimes are often carried out by 'prolific rural offenders' linked with illegal drugs rather than being opportunistic. Heritage crimes like stealing ancient stone or lead from church roofs have risen according to a new report by Historic England and the National Police Chief's Council. However there's been a fall in unlawful metal detecting. Nighthawking as it's called, sounds rather romantic, but for farmers finding people metal detecting on their land without permission at night is anything but, with threats and violence from criminals searching for valuable historic artefacts. We hear from one Yorkshire farmer who helped capture a gang of four who were sentenced at Hull Crown Court earlier this month. We also speak to a former detective and archaeologist who's now in charge of tackling heritage crime at Historic England. All week we're looking into the many, often imaginative, ways byproducts and waste from agriculture are turned into something useful. On one farm site in Stirlingshire they're turning whisky waste into fish food. Scientists have found a way to turn yeast into Omega-3 using algae and say the vital oils produced this way could help save depleted feed fish stocks, boost Scotland's salmon farming industry and give a clean, efficient way to dispose of the waste. Bottlenecks in the planning system are a bigger obstacle to the Shropshire market than the UK's broader economic woes, according to Towler Shaw Roberts partner Toby Shaw, who believes demand is very much there for quality developments once they finally get built. Towler Shaw Roberts sits comfortably at the top of the Radius On Demand Rankings for Shropshire, with 75,153 sq ft of space transacted across 38 deals so far this year. Shaw highlights Shrewsbury's historic Flaxmill Maltings - the world's first iron frame building which has been imaginatively redeveloped by Historic England for office use and is now attracting record rents for the town - as evidence that demand is there. However, he also believes the market is being hampered by a planning system which means developments are waiting years for work to even start on site.

A Stuart time capsule has emerged from beneath the sand after 320 years. In early December 1703, barometers across South-Eastern England plunged as a cyclone made landfall in Britain leaving a path of destruction in its wake. In London, the roof of Westminster Abbey was ripped off and hundreds of ships in the Thames smashed together and left in heaps. 2000 Chimney stacks were destroyed and Queen Anne cowered in the cellar of St James Palace. But the biggest damage was done to the Royal Navy; over 1000 seaman drowned and a fifth of its fleet was wrecked overnight. One of those ships the HMS Northumberland has recently begun to appear thanks to the shifting sediment of Goodwin Sands on the South-East coast. On the podcast to tell its story in the storm is archaeologist Dan Pascoe who is working with Historic England to dive on the wreck and learn what he can before it disappears once again forever.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and mixed by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. In 1594 and 1595, when William Shakespeare was 31 years old, fires tore through his hometown of Stratford Upon Avon, causing such destruction that this natural disaster is one of the few major events in Stratford Upon Avon that was recorded for posterity. The fires were known as The Great Fires and in the aftermath of the devastation the town gathered together to rebuild the timbers of their homes and businesses. Many of these rebuilt structures survive through to today, and with the help of a recently awarded research grant from Historic England, the Stratford Society lead by historian Robert Bearman, look to investigate how the timber frame buildings were rebuilt following the fires in 1594, 1595, and another one that occurred later in 1614. Dr. Bob Bearman joins us today to tell us about the history of the fires and to share a look inside the Stratfire Project.    Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's episode 23 and we are taking a blustery walk with some fascinating researchers from Oxford Archaeology and Historic England… we are stepping back in time! We discuss an innovative and collaborative research project called ‘Rewilding Later Prehistory' exploring Bronze Age and Iron Age ecology from around 4,500yrs ago to 2,000yrs ago. Where the focus of this period is usually based around human progress, this project aims to discover more about the wildlife that would have been found in our landscape around this time. From this research the hope is that we can use archaeology to link in with current nature recovery practices – thinking about restoring landscapes and bringing back lost species.

Our reporters have been out speaking to some of those on picket lines. Also in today's podcast, a new report's raised concerns about coastal communities like Margate being overlooked in the government's levelling up agenda. Research has found household income in coastal areas is almost £3,000 a year lower than places inland, with nearly one in five jobs paying below the living wage. Hear from Sally-Ann Hart who is chair of a parliamentary committee that's been looking into the issue. Four sites on the high street between Rochester and Chatham have been given protected status. An old brewery, small cottage, Jewish burial ground and a tomb have been listed as Grade II. We've been speaking to Posy Metz from Historic England. And, as expected, Gillingham added to their squad on the final day of the football transfer window. Our sports reporter Luke Cawdell as all the details.

As a conservation-accredited building surveyor with deep interests in both the natural and built environment, Slade explains the role of Historic England as a statutory consultee in planning, in provision of technical guidance and training, and in research to confront upcoming climate challenges. In this episode, she argues that sustainability and conservation are ‘well-matched' to deliver change on the ground. Slade also details the range of guidance and webinars available from Historic England, as well as the current research agenda which includes ‘hazard mapping' of regional risks. This involves granular mapping of overheating, flooding, slope collapse, shrink-swell capacity and storm exposure under different emissions scenarios and their implications for the built environment. ELISABETH BLANCHET documents the world through photography. She has travelled widely and her interest and patience in getting to know communities who live differently have resulted in her being able to capture peoples' worlds beyond the ones in which we ourselves live. Elisabeth's photography takes us to the Normandy beaches, the worlds of the Irish travellers and Romany, an orphanage in Romania from Ceaușescu's era, and to the world of Britain's post war prefab communities. As well as photography, Elisabeth is a writer and a filmmaker. She is the author of several books one of which was in collaboration with Historic England on the social and architectural history of Britain's prefabs. Lieberland is a place forgotten, but not to be forgotten. Situated on the Danube River in a disputed area between Serbia and Croatia, it became a place for libertarians to dream of another world with its President Vit Jedlička at the helm. Elisabeth spent some time documenting the early stages of Vit's political adventure. Elisabeth believes her role in documenting involves observing and making a link between the outside world and those worlds where people live differently. “So people see that they live normally, They eat, they love their children, or not, like everyone else.” More recently, Elisabeth bought a camera in a flea market in Moscow. Inside the camera was an undeveloped film that she got developed. The black and white photos depicted a young boy's first day at school. It was 1990 in the then USSR. The images inspired Elisabeth and set her on a mission to find this Russian boy and to return the photographs. The events that follow are currently influencing one of Elisabeth's latest projects. The mosaic discovered in England's smallest county, Rutland, tells a story that stretches back thousands of years into the Bronze Age. Time Team's resident community archaeologist, Dani Wootton catches up with John Thomas from the University of Leicester Archaeological Services to find out more about this amazing discovery. John Thomas is no stranger to Time Team having appeared on the programme several times over the years, alongside fellow archaeology Peter Liddle (who we interviewed recently on Patreon). What's more the geophysical survey on the villa was carried out by SUMO – the company led by Time Team's own geophys whizz, Dr John Gater! Very special thanks to John Thomas, UCLA and Historic England. The original video of this interview can be watched here.

In this episode we discussed the connection between Architecture and Faith, by talking to three historians, writers and heritage professionals about new approaches to considering the history of buildings used by communities of faith. Religious architecture has always been central to architectural history, because human societies have always been inspired to build beautiful and high status buildings as part of their religious practices. However in this conversation we addressed new ways of talking about religious architecture: examining what they might have meant to the communities that built them, exploring the avenues for adaptation and retention of religious buildings in a changing society and talking about how marginalised communities have created spaces for religious worship. Contributors: William Whyte is Professor of Social and Architectural History at St John's College, Oxford, writing about the architectural and material history of education, faith and society and serves as the Chair of the Oxford Preservation Trust. Shahed Saleem is a practicing architect and design studio leader at the University of Westminster School of Architecture. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Bartlett School of Architecture and wrote an architectural and social history of the British Mosque for Historic England. Rachel Morley is Director of Friends of Friendless Churches, an independent and non-denominational charity which cares for more than 50 former places of worship around Britain.

Then we jump over to Post WW2 Britain and we uncover how wars not only created Disabled people but how post war periods also led to infrastructure and programmes that helped people with disabilities. We will confront the horrific conditions Disabled residents of institutions were forced to live in and see how the era of the big institution eventually came to an end. We'll intersect with the Civil Rights movement and see how it inspired the Parent's movement, which led to the Independent Living movement and the fight for Human Rights for people with Disabilities.
