Why do so many women suddenly start waking up at 3:00 a.m. during perimenopause? In this practical and science-backed conversation, Dr. Mariza sits down with renowned sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus to unpack why sleep changes so dramatically during perimenopause and menopause, and what women can do to finally get restorative sleep again. Dr. Breus explains how fluctuating estrogen, progesterone, melatonin, cortisol, body temperature, and blood sugar all collide during midlife, creating the perfect storm for middle-of-the-night awakenings. He shares why waking up at 3:00 a.m. is incredibly common, how modern habits often make it worse, and why women need a layered approach instead of relying on a single solution. Together, they discuss everything from sleep apnea, hormone replacement therapy, alcohol, caffeine, blood sugar, and evening routines to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), breathwork, thermoregulation, and supplementation. Most importantly, Dr. Breus offers practical strategies women can begin implementing immediately to improve sleep quality, reduce nighttime wakeups, and build a foundation for better health through every stage of menopause. If you've been lying awake at 3:00 a.m. wondering what's happening to your body, this episode is packed with answers and actionable solutions. DR. MICHAEL BREUS Dr. Michael Breus is a board-certified clinical psychologist, clinical sleep specialist, bestselling author, and founder of The Sleep Doctor. For more than two decades, he has helped millions of people improve their sleep through science-backed strategies focused on circadian rhythms, sleep disorders, behavioral sleep medicine, and overall wellness. He is the author of multiple bestselling books, including Sleep, Drink, Breathe. IN THIS EPISODE Why women commonly wake up around 3:00 a.m. during perimenopause How estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, and blood sugar affect sleep The biggest mistakes women make before bedtime Why sleep apnea is often overlooked in midlife women How CBT-I can help retrain the brain for better sleep The role of caffeine, alcohol, fiber, and evening nutrition Why cooling the body improves sleep quality Practical habits that create a healthier nighttime routine QUOTES “Everything we do, we do better with a good night's sleep.” “Sleep is the currency of attention.” “You need runway to land the plane.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Order my newest book: The Perimenopause Revolution https://peri-revolution.com/ Get the “Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health” book by Dr. Michael Breus. https://amzn.to/4b6OM75 Take the Chronoquiz nowGet the Home Sleep Study - The at-home sleep study measures key sleep metrics The Sleep Doctor Website The Sleep Doctor Instagram The Sleep Doctor Youtube RELATED EPISODES 758: Why Your Body Can't Heal Until It Feels Safe: The Nervous System Shift That Changes Everything with Dr. Dave Rabin 757: The Hidden Emotional Shift of Perimenopause (No One Prepared Us For) with Dr. Melinda Ring 756: What Low-Grade Inflammation Is Really Doing to Your Hormones, Brain & Metabolism with Dr. Mariza 755: What If Your Body Isn't Broken, Just Undernourished? Be Still & Be Loved is a guided Scripture meditation designed to help you slow down, quiet your mind, and rest in God's presence. Whether you're beginning your day, taking a midday pause, or preparing for sleep, this space invites you to breathe deeply and receive His peace. Take a few moments to settle into a comfortable position. If you're able, lie down. If not, find a seat where you can rest without distraction. As you begin to notice your breath, pay attention to how your state of being starts to shift. Every inhale and exhale is a reminder that God is near, holding you with His steady love. In this guided meditation, you'll reflect on 2 Corinthians 4:7: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." Though our bodies are fragile, they carry something infinitely valuable—God's presence. He is our greatest treasure, and He treasures every part of us, including our minds. Together we'll quiet the noise, fix our thoughts on what is excellent, noble, and true, and rest in the One who is making us new—body, mind, and spirit. Breathe deeply. You are held. You are loved. You are His treasure. Ready to Go Deeper?

Humility is one of the most quietly powerful practices for positive psychology and mental health. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Here's the heart of it: humility is not a weakness. It's not about making yourself small or performing modesty for social approval. It's an accurate, grounded sense of self, what Dr. Daryl Van Tongeren calls "right-sizing." You own your strengths and weaknesses. And you hold your worth steady through all of it. We explored four types of humility this month: relational, intellectual, cultural, and existential. And we worked through three core ingredients to build humility up: Know Yourself. This is where self-compassion becomes essential. Self-knowledge without self-compassion tends to slide into rumination — that harsh, looping self-focus that keeps us stuck. Dr. Kristin Neff's research reminds us that genuine self-reflection requires feeling safe enough to look clearly, without bracing for an attack. When self-compassion is in place, honest self-awareness becomes possible. So does recognizing things like the better-than-average effect, which is our tendency to unconsciously and inaccurately position ourselves as a little more right, and others a little more wrong. Humility gently corrects that drift. Check Yourself. This is ego territory. When we feel threatened, the ego rises up. We deflect, deny, shut down, intellectualize. It's a very human, very normal response. But it doesn't have to run the show. One of the most practical tools from this series: when you feel defensive, pause. Breathe. Then ask yourself, "What would I think if I weren't feeling defensive?" That question can create some space for the ego to stand down and lets emotional regulation take over instead of reactivity. Go Beyond Yourself. This is where the magic of humility really shows itself as we build a genuine curiosity about other people and life's bigger questions. The self-forgetfulness that C.S. Lewis describes as essential to humility puts it all into action. When we're not so consumed by ourselves, the world opens up. And that's where connection, meaning, and joy actually show up in more noticeable, lasting ways. If you've worked through this series and feel less certain than when you started, that's not a problem. That's the practice of humility in action. Sitting with uncertainty, tolerating what's unresolved, resisting the cultural pressure toward easy answers and performed confidence is peak courage. It's often uncomfortable and it's always worth it. If this work has stirred something that feels bigger than you want to carry alone, please reach out to a therapist, a trusted friend, or a support community. Seeking support isn't weakness. It's an act of humility and one of the most courageous things you can do. And for Joy Lab Program members: your Episode Experiment includes a guided meditation and journal prompts to help you harvest and integrate the work you've done this month. We close with Rilke (we know, we close with Rilke a lot!): "Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves." Keep tending to your humility. It grows good things. About: The Joy Lab Podcast is an Ambie-nominated podcast that blends science and soul to help you cope better with stress, anxiety, and depression. Wendell Berry's book Standing by Words Common Questions: Q: How do I stop being so hard on myself without losing self-awareness? A: Self-compassion and self-knowledge are partners. As researcher Dr. Kristin Neff puts it, "You can look clearly at yourself when you're not afraid of what you'll find." Self-compassion creates the psychological safety for honest, accurate self-appraisal, replacing harsh rumination with compassionate self-reflection. Humility is the result: an accurate, grounded sense of self that's neither inflated nor deflated. Q: Why does being humble feel so uncomfortable and countercultural? A: Because in many ways, it is. We live in a world that often rewards certainty, self-promotion, and being right, even when those things don't actually nourish us. Building humility means opening up to uncertainty and the unknown, which takes real courage. The good news is that discomfort is also building something called uncertainty-tolerance, a form of emotional resilience that reaches across every area of your life in really nourishing ways. “In silent screams and wildest dreams, I never dreamed of this. This love is good. This love is bad. This love is alive back from the dead.” This week we're setting sail on one of history's greatest epics, Homer's The Odyssey, and asking a very important question... did Taylor Swift write it? (We're mostly joking. Mostly.) In this Show & Tell episode, we each make the case for a Taylor Swift song that illuminates a different facet of the Odyssey, from Penelope's 20-year vigil to Odysseus weeping on a gorgeous island, to the sirens, the wine-dark sea, and a very significant scar. Along the way, the hosts dig into questions of translation and interpretation — particularly the significance of Emily Wilson's landmark female translation of the text — discuss the role of Athena in the story of the epic, and geek out about the archery contest that shows up in both the Odyssey and two Indian epics. Plus: the upcoming Christopher Nolan adaptation, the musical Epic by Jorge Rivera, Madeline Miller's Circe, and why All Too Well (10 Minute Version) might just be Taylor's own Odyssey. Breathe deep and think: What do you smell right now? The sweetness of the spring air? The smoky smells of the highway? Our noses give us key clues about the environment and provide a critical daily link to some of our most cherished memories. But smell, and its control over culture and politics, is often undervalued and misunderstood. Today, we take a nose dive into the olfactory, exploring how humanity has used smell to communicate and control. "Many people have their own thing that lights them on fire, for me, it's running" say Katie O'Grady. CF modulator drugs changes are a game changer for people living with cystic fibrosis. Katie O'Grady's story is a powerful reflection of how dramatically life with cystic fibrosis has changed in the era of CF modulators, and what becomes possible when hope replaces survival mode. A runner, speaker, and cystic fibrosis advocate in Boston, Katie redefined what it means to live with CF. Katie inspires us by talked about her shift in mindset and how it changed everything: she stopped thinking of herself as “a CF patient who runs” and began identifying as “a runner who happens to have CF.” That subtle but profound change transformed not only the way she trained, but the way she cared for herself, viewed her future, and moved through the world. For much of her life, Katie lived the reality many people with CF know too well — moving from infection to infection, never fully certain what the next year, or even the next season, might bring. At 18, she battled a devastating case of pneumonia that forced her to confront the fragility of her health. But in 2019, everything changed with the arrival of Trikafta. For the first time, Katie could imagine a future without immediately attaching fear or limitations to it. She speaks candidly about what it means to rebuild trust in your body after years of illness, and how running became far more than exercise. It became freedom, therapy, identity, and proof that her diagnosis did not get to define the boundaries of her life. Katie opens up about taking the longest break from running she'd ever experienced, wondering if she would ever return, and discovering that what she missed most wasn't competition — it was the clarity, peace, and sense of self she found while moving. What future are you asking for with your business? What is it you would like to create? This episode of Choice, Change and Action is an excerpt from Simone Milasas' current Business Done Different class where she talks about getting clear on what it is you desire, and looking at the elements you are avoiding that could actually allow your business to grow and expand. You have to actually take some action and put some work in to build the business. Stop limiting its growth through choices like competition, looking to the past, and making things matter that don't, and start choosing the elements of ease, joy, glory, magic, miracles and chaos. What seeds are you growing that you could be nurturing today? Questions And Tools: "What else can I generate?" "What else is occurring here that I haven't allowed myself to receive?" "If I wasn't competing, what else is available? What else could I be choosing in regards to this?" "What if this didn't matter?" Tools: What is the future you are asking for? What is the future your business is asking for? What else is occurring and what else is showing up that you haven't allowed yourself to receive? What seeds are you growing that you could be nurturing today? What else could you create, what else could you generate that you haven't allowed yourself to choose? Breathe. Stop listening to the noise. Ask a question. What is the future that you are asking for? What is the future your business is asking for? A new wave of healers. Have you noticed? Not the ones who can quote every chakra and recite manifestation techniques like AI bot. I'm talking about the ones who've actually walked through to the other side of shadow work. Who know what it costs… not in theory, but in the body, in the bank account, in the losses of relationships that didn't survive. These healers aren't typical. They didn't rush their shit. They were in the depths - constricting and contracting over and over again. They didn't build a brand around their awakening before the dust even settled. They sat in the wreckage long enough to actually integrate what broke them open and that takes time most people aren't willing to give it. This is a different kind of healer. One who isn't performing transformation, but embodying it. An activator. Living life. One who isn't selling you a shortcut, because they know there isn't one. If that's you, you've done the work in the dark, alone, with no audience and no applause. You're diving deeper with every step. It's time to EMBODY it. ▲ 1:1 Private Mentorship: https://www.alwaysplay.org/dive ▲ Flows Over Flaws: Creative Perfectionism Masterclass: https://www.alwaysplay.org/flows-over-flaws ▲ Become a certified breathwork facilitator: https://www.flowbreathworktraining.com/ ▲ Learn your Healer Archetype: https://www.alwaysplay.org/healerarchetype ▲ Read my Breathwork book, Breathe: https://www.alwaysplay.org/orderbreathe ▲ Free Playground for Mystics: https://tinyurl.com/playground222 ▲ Connect on social: @shanila.sattar ▲ YouTube: / shanilasattar

Lauren Thomsen's profound connection to architectural environments began with a deeply formative childhood event when she was just seven years old. After her family made the decision to relocate, a young Lauren found herself sitting in the back of her mother's realtor's car, completely mesmerized as they toured a wide array of houses. Walking through those highly varied layouts, she experienced an architectural epiphany, intensely imagining the entirely different types of lives she might live within each distinct boundary. This early realization that spatial layout directly dictates the quality of human life established a permanent lane that she would follow into her adult career. Before gaining the confidence to launch her own independent firm, Lauren pursued a rigorous academic path and built a strong foundation inside prestigious, high-stakes design studios. She describes her years spent working under established mentors as an invaluable phase where she learned the complex operational realities of translating abstract blueprints into physical structures. However, as she sharpened her technical skills, she increasingly felt a strong internal push to express her own unique, holistic design language—one that favored soulful intention and longevity over fast-paced corporate execution. This desire for creative alignment ultimately led to the founding of Philadelphia-based Lauren Thomsen Design. For Lauren, stepping into entrepreneurship was not driven by individual vanity, but by a necessity to craft a practice that could seamlessly blend rigorous architectural discipline with an empathetic understanding of her clients' personal narratives. Her journey stands as a powerful masterclass for emerging designers, illustrating how a pure childhood fascination with spatial possibilities can mature into a celebrated, forward-looking architectural studio.

Breathe deeply now, and let your heart grow quiet as you turn from sins forgiven. “By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before Him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything” (1 John 3:19-20). It's not the voice of God that drives you on to fear, or rush, or labor past your strength. We dare not make the Spirit own our anxiousness or lack of peace. God is always on the side of what gives life, builds hope, and moves us even one small step toward balance. His grace is meant to keep us breathing, as well as for our saving. The day that Jesus wants to bring us healing is the day that we are living, not only when our destinies are weighed. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). His grace is for today and always. So stay in grace. -Bill Knott

Why did Paul fight to free Timothy from the law — and then turn around and circumcise him? The answer reveals one of the most practical ministry principles in all of Acts. In this episode, Dallas and Carlos walk through Acts 16 and unpack three movements that still speak directly to how we live today: Timothy's willingness to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel, Lydia's conversion and what it means to run your home and business as an act of worship, and Paul and Silas singing hymns at midnight in a prison cell — right before God shook the walls down. Whether you're navigating tension between your faith and your culture, trying to figure out what it looks like to be a Christian in the workplace, or just need a reminder that God moves in the hard moments — this one is for you. --- TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — Intro & The Question: Why Did Paul Circumcise Timothy? 1:20 — Welcome & Recap of Acts 15 2:00 — Acts 16:1–5 | Meet Timothy: Dual Citizen, New Disciple 3:45 — Jewish Law 101: Why This Moment Is Complicated 5:00 — Paul's Strategy: Remove the Roadblocks, Not the Gospel 7:00 — Dallas's Story: The Ponytail, the Calling & What God Asked 10:15 — What Are You Willing to Give Up So the Gospel Has Room to Breathe? 12:00 — Corey's Story: Gauged Ears and a Mission Trip to Cambodia 13:00 — Acts 16:11–15 | Lydia: Seller of Purple 15:00 — How God Opens Hearts — and What Lydia Did With Hers 16:30 — Your Business, Your Home & Your Whole Life as an Act of Worship 18:20 — More Than a Jesus Fish: What Living It Out Actually Looks Like 19:00 — Acts 16:16–40 | The Slave Girl, the Demon & the Arrest 20:30 — A Real Warning About Divination (and Miss Cleo) 21:30 — Paul and Silas: Beaten, Chained & Still Singing 22:00 — The Earthquake, the Jailer & a Sword He Almost Used 23:45 — "What Must I Do to Be Saved?" — The Simplest Answer in Scripture 25:00 — What the Prisoners Heard Before the Miracle Happened 26:30 — A Whole Family Gets Saved: What God Does Through Obedience 27:30 — Final Thoughts: Don't Be Afraid of Sacrifice If It Points to Christ 28:10 — Closing & How to Connect with The Healing Place --- CONNECT WITH US Website: thpshreveport.com Email: mediahub@thpshreveport..com JOIN US IN PERSON Sundays at 10:00 AM | Wednesdays at 6:30 PM 638 Kingston Road, Shreveport, LA --- The Midweek Move is a weekly Bible study podcast from The Healing Place in Shreveport, Louisiana — examining scripture in context and asking: what is actually happening here?
Breathe were one of the leaders of that sophistopop movement in the late 80s and scored five big hits over two albums for their work, including the enduring ballads "Hands to Heaven" and "How Can I Fall". Unfortunately, after those two albums they disappeared and have never been heard from again, especially the uber-talented front man David Glasper. That leaves guitarist Marcus Lillington as the only former member able to provide some details, but even he can be reluctant about it, which is why it's such a huge boon to have him join us this week. He explains as best he can what happened to the band, the degree to which they were "manufactured" and what happened to Dave. We're extremely honored to welcome Marcus this week and be reminded of this special group. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Hello, Beautiful...I'm so grateful you're here with me. Before the stress of the day pulls you in different directions, take this moment to choose peace for yourself. This guided meditation helps calm anxiety, quiet mental clutter, and create emotional balance so you can move through the day with more ease and clarity. Breathe deeply and reconnect with the calm already within you. Love,
Jesus said in John 16:32-33:“Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”In Christ, you are never alone. There will always be troubles, trials, and sorrows here on earth, but in and through everything you experience, Jesus is there, offering His peace and encouraging you to “take heart.”What trial are you walking through today that needs to be overcome by the peace of Christ? You may be dealing with some things in life that are making you tired, weary, discouraged, dealing with grief, and ready to give up. That's exactly what it means to lose heart. When Jesus tells us to take heart it means to: be encouraged, to have hope, to be bold and confident, to not give up, to be of good cheer, to have courage! Whether we take heart or lose heart is simply a choice we make. The way Jesus uses the phrase take heart here in John 16:33 is as an imperative verb. That means that he is saying taking heart is an action, it's something we do, and that it is a possibility in our lives based off the choice we make…but it doesn't become a reality until we actually make the choice. What is one area of your life that you can make the choice to take heart? to be encouraged, to have hope, to be bold and confident, to not give up, to be of good cheer.Breathe in - inviting Christ's peace into your day. Exhale, letting go of weariness and discouragement.Move into the Balance of Christ's peace, which is with you.Pray: “Father, I know I am not alone because You are with me. May I find my peace in You and take heart that You have overcome my world.” As above. So below.

After a long pause, I'm returning to the microphone in a completely different way.Not with a polished show. Not with a long list of interviews. Not with a strategy. But with a simple question:What happens when we step away from the noise long enough to hear ourselves again? In this new episode of A Life That Lets Me Breathe, I share why I've retired my former podcast, A Free Spirit Life, and what is calling me forward now. This conversation explores:• Why I've been taking time away to reset and reconnect with myself• The difference between seeking freedom and creating a life that lets you breathe• Simplicity as a spiritual practice• Listening beneath the conditioning, expectations, and noise• Creativity, nature, wonder, and authentic living• Why this podcast will be recorded in real life - in gardens, on walks, beneath trees, and in ordinary moments of noticingThis isn't a show about having all the answers. It's an audio field journal.A place to pause.A place to breathe.A place to remember.Thank you for being here.Until next time, may you notice something beautiful around you, trust your own rhythm, and leave a little more room for your life to breathe. With love,ShannonShannonKinneyDuh.com | A Life That Lets Me BreatheArtist • Writer • Storyteller • Creative + Intuitive Mentor Get full access to Shannon Kinney-Duh at afreespiritlife.substack.com/subscribe
Most adults with asthma never receive education about managing their condition, even though it is proven to help with better asthma control. The reason comes down to access. In this episode, we explore a digital platform called BREATHE, built from the ground up to change that. Dr. Payel Gupta and Kortney sit down with the two lead authors behind “Development and Usability of a Digital Asthma Self-management Education Platform: BRinging Exercise, Asthma Assessments, and TeacHing to Everyone (BREATHE)” published in JACI: In Practice, March 2026. De De Gardner and Sheryl Flynn, CEO, talk about how BREATHE was developed, what the app includes, and what the data showed after patients and providers put it to the test. What we cover in this episode about asthma self-management Asthma self-management education and why most adults never receive it. How BREATHE was built using a user-centered design process, shaped by what adults with asthma and healthcare providers said they actually needed. What the BREATHE platform includes: asthma lessons, validated control assessments, and an Asthma Action Plan, all in one app, in English and Spanish. What the usability study found: adults rated the app in the 81st percentile, providers rated the dashboard in the 76th percentile, and 80% considered making a behavior change after just two weeks. Recorded live before a full audience at Sauna Days 2025, this special episode of Sauna Talk brings together four authors, educators, and lifelong students of human experience for a conversation that moves well beyond sauna itself. Joining me are Garrett Conover, author of Sauna Magic; Jesse Coomer, author and educator in breathwork and cold exposure; Harvey Martin, author of Breathe, Focus, Excel and Without Words; and myself, Glenn Auerbach, author of Sauna Build from Start to Finish. Together, we explore the experiences, obsessions, and questions that led each of us to write books and dedicate years of our lives to sharing what we've learned. Our discussion ranges from sauna culture, cold plunging, breathwork, athletics, coaching, and creativity to broader questions about wellness, personal growth, and what it means to live an examined life. We talk about the tension between science and intuition, the limits of protocols and optimization, and why authentic experiences often teach us more than information alone. Along the way, we reflect on how writing changes the writer, how teaching changes the teacher, and how books become snapshots of who we were at a particular moment in our own journeys. The conversation is candid, thoughtful, and at times deeply personal. Rather than presenting ourselves as experts with all the answers, we share stories of uncertainty, evolution, mistakes, and discovery. Whether discussing sauna, breath, cold exposure, nervous system regulation, or the search for meaning and connection in modern life, a common theme emerges: the most valuable lessons often come not from information, but from direct experience. If you've ever wondered why practices like sauna, breathwork, cold immersion, and time in nature can have such a profound impact on how we feel, think, and connect with ourselves and others, you'll find plenty to reflect on in this conversation. Recorded in the Great Lake Room at Sauna Days 2025, this is a live authors panel about writing, learning, teaching, and the lifelong pursuit of awareness, presence, and authentic human connection.
There is nothing we love more than a good listener question episode. It is the absolute best way for my Business Superpowers co-host, Lau Lapides, and me to connect directly with you bosses and dig into what you are actually experiencing in your daily business. Recently, we combed through a handful of listener questions, and one from a listener named Ben immediately stopped us in our tracks: "What are voice actors wasting the most time on right now?" Oh boy. Get comfortable, because Lau and I did not hold back. From the black hole of digital over-exposure to the exact mechanics of a genuine read, we broke down what you need to stop doing—and what you need to start focusing on—to take your business to the next level. Episode Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: The Trap of Self-Sabotage and Analysis Paralysis (00:01 – 04:10) Anne kicks off the listener Q&A with Ben's question about where voice talent waste the most time. Lau immediately calls out the silent killer of VO careers: intentional or unintentional self-sabotage. She describes how talent waste massive amounts of mental energy second-guessing auditions, wondering why they didn't get a booking, and obsessing over whether a client "liked" them. Anne shares how surviving cancer completely transformed her perspective in the booth, freeing her from minor anxieties and giving her permission to just have fun, audition, forget it, and move on. Chapter 2: Fantasizing vs. Actively Doing the Hard Work (04:11 – 07:53) Anne and Lau shift the spotlight to a different kind of time-wasting: thinking about the work instead of actually doing the work. They discuss talent who get trapped "fantasizing" about the perfect gig or complaining that they "just need to market more" without sending a single email. Lau warns that a wild creative imagination is a gift for acting, but a massive liability when it comes to the logical, disciplined day-to-day realities of running a small business, tracking invoices, and practicing script homework. Chapter 3: Digital Exposure, Brain Overload, and the Power of the "Share" (07:54 – 13:42) Lau introduces the danger of digital over-exposure and "dopamine addiction" online. Anne admits to the ongoing battle of keeping too many browser tabs open (shoutout to all the fashion buffs out there!), and Lau explains how overdosing on digital stimuli—even high-intensity entertainment like horror movies or daytime dramas—can alter your brain waves and derail your focus. To combat isolation and comparisonitis, they recommend building a tight-knit inner circle of colleagues to break your mental bubbles and celebrate wins constructively. Chapter 4: The Myth of the "Easy" Read and the Olympian Metaphor (13:43 – 16:44) The hosts tackle the frustrating reality that both new talent and bad clients minimize the value of voice acting because "it looks easy." Anne uses a great metaphor involving the Southern California lottery for Olympic tickets: elite gymnasts and swimmers make their movements look completely effortless, yet no one assumes they can jump onto a balance beam and replicate it. Professional voice acting requires the exact same unseen, high-level athletic discipline. Chapter 5: Gravitas, Empathy, and Decoupling the "Low Voice" (16:45 – 19:14) Anne raises another major listener question: What does authenticity actually sound like, and how does it relate to the industry's current obsession with "authority"? Lau notes that breakdown specs are constantly demanding "gravitas" and "assertiveness," especially for women. However, they debunk the myth that gravitas requires an artificially low pitch. True authority comes from a deep frame of reference and understanding your target market's specific culture—whether you are a 48-year-old corporate narrator or an 8-year-old expert talking about Pokémon. Chapter 6: The "physicating" Framework and Keeping Auditions Raw (19:15 – End) Anne breaks down the exact training method she teaches in her precision narration classes: acting is never a primary action; it is always an empathetic reaction to a problem. She shares her famous "Jersey Girl" driving example to outline her step-by-step performance framework: Breathe, Focus, Physicalize (or "Physicate"), and Speak. Lau and Anne close the show by urging talent to stop editing out the raw, human elements of their commercial and animation auditions, opting for a bit of authentic grit over artificial perfection. Top 10 Boss Takeaways Ditch the audition autopsy: Wondering why you didn't book a gig is a form of procrastination. Fire off the audition, forget it completely, and redirect that energy into your next project. Analysis leads to paralysis: Second-guessing the client's internal thoughts stops your creative momentum. Give yourself permission to fail forward. Discipline your imagination: Your creative brain is a beautiful tool for script interpretation, but keep it out of your business operations. Run your invoices, tech updates, and marketing with cold, hard logic. Guard your digital environment: Overdosing on social media scrolling and endless digital tabs alters your focus. Protect your mental health by setting strict boundaries on your screen time. Break the isolation bubble: When you find yourself trapped in a negative mental rerun, pick up the phone or hop on a call with a trusted business peer who can ground you back in reality. Immunity over insecurity: Stop letting other people's online wins trigger your insecurities. Use your community's success stories as a roadmap to learn what is currently working in the marketplace. Effortless execution takes years: If your delivery sounds like "just reading," you are doing it right. Treat the illusion of simplicity as a professional compliment, but never let a client use it to devalue your rates. Gravitas isn't a vocal register: True authority and credibility have absolutely nothing to do with how low your voice can go. True gravitas is rooted in confidence, presence, and direct connection. Master the art of "Physicating": Before you speak a single word of a script, run through Anne's four pillars: Breathe naturally, Focus on the unwritten moment before, Physicalize the reaction with your body, and then Speak. Keep it a little dirty: Stop turning in overly polished, perfectly scrubbed, sterile audio files for commercial and animation auditions. Leave the natural breaths and human imperfections in the track—casting directors want a real human being, not an algorithm.
