The Floating Voter
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been working on his empathy.

He knows at times he does not come across as overly compassionate when he's been asked about the impact of his Government's failings on the lives of people. Speaking on the Floating Voter podcast, Mr Varadkar said: “Sometimes, maybe I don't show that I care enough.” He says this is down to him being “blunt and straight talking” which can “come across as a bit insensitive sometimes”. “I understand that,” he added. However, he said his partner, Dr Matthew Barrett, believes the accusations that he lacks empathy are unfair. “I was actually talking to Matt, my partner, about that the other night and he said, ‘like that is so wrong and that's so unfair',” Mr Varadkar said. “Every evening when I'm home I'm talking about all the problems of the day and the struggles to get on top of those difficult issues like homelessness and overcrowding.” The Taoiseach said Mr Barrett also told him: “You really do care but you know it's the doctor in you. You want to get in there quickly and, you know, fix the problems, stem the blood.” He also accepts he does not take criticism very well and can be overly defensive when questioned about human tragedies. “I think anyone when they're being criticised or when they're being attacked they're going to be a little bit defensive sometimes so I think that's probably a fair criticism. “I hate to hear people dismiss facts and figures and statistics as if they don't matter. The core behind truth is facts and figures and statistics,” he added. He dismissed suggestions that he was seeking a presidential style General Election campaign which would focus on just him and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin. “I'm very happy to go toe-to-toe with Micheál Martin like I did last week and will again next week, but actually a lot of our campaign, a lot of our messages is that Fine Gael has as a team, really strong team,” he said. Since taking office he has learned you need a good team to “cover for you”. “I mean cover for you in a good way. Not cover up for you,” he added. “I have a similar view that we should keep the same Brexit team in place until we get the trade deal, which has to be done by the end of this year,” he said. He would not give any commitment on Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy and Health Minister Simon Harris who have both faced criticism for their handling of their department. However, he said: “Eoghan Murphy and Simon Harris are in good standing, and they've had really tough briefs. “What really disappoints me is the extent to which some people who don't have much solutions or new ideas when it comes to health and housing they try to cover that up by targeting those two guys personally. I think that's kind of nasty,” he added. He expanded on his offer to form a grand coalition between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil if no other government could be formed after the election while also claiming Mr Martin “didn't know basic facts about the Brexit withdrawal agreement”. “If we end up in a situation whereby Fine Gael can't do that and Fianna Fáil can't do that and both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have ruled out Sinn Féin, the only way to avoid a second election is for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to come together in some way, and I'd be willing to talk to Fianna Fáil about that,” he said. Mr Varadkar said Mr Martin's rejection of his offer was a “little bit arrogant and a little bit irresponsible”. “What Fianna Fáil are saying is ‘we're not going to touch Fine Gael, even though we've spent two-and-a-half years negotiating budgets with them and supporting us through confidence and supply',” he said. “So essentially, he's saying that if you don't give Fianna Fáil enough seats to form a government with the smaller centre-left parties, ‘I'm going to go off in a huff and refuse to take part in the government', and that's not a very responsible or mature position in my view,” he added.

'I had brain fart on radio' admits Minister

A MINISTER has admitted to experiencing a ‘brain fart' while outlining the new rules behind counting in the European elections on radio. On RTÉ's ‘Morning Ireland' last Tuesday, John Paul Phelan said the transfers of the final candidate eliminated would not come into play in the constituencies set to gain an extra seat after Brexit. But as barristers and returning officers in Dublin and Ireland South were wading through the relevant legislation, Mr Phelan reappeared on radio to clarify he had gotten the situation completely wrong. Speaking on Independent.ie's ‘Floating Voter' podcast, the Minister for Electoral Reform has said he was embarrassed by the “cock up”. “I had a kind of a brain fart on Morning Ireland. I admit to it. I doubted myself,” he said, adding that it was “pretty horrific”. Mr Phelan explained that a number of people had been circulating an outdated version of the legislation on social media. “I cocked up spectacularly so. I'll be careful about who I take legal advice from in the future. “It was a stupid mistake to make but who hasn't had one of those,” he said. In the podcast, the Carlow/Kilkenny TD also discusses the fallout from the Maria Bailey controversy. He says as Fine Gael's director of elections he was getting feedback from candidates around the country and “none of them were very happy”. However, he adds: “I think it would have had a much deeper effect in a general election context.” Speaking about the senior minister in his department, Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, he says the suggesting that young people should be ‘excited' about co-living was “perhaps unfortunate”. Mr Phelan also discuss the failure of plebicites for directly-elected mayors in Cork and Waterford. And he outlines plans to fast-track an election for a mayor in Limerick. Responding to cricitism of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar by ex-minister Alan Shatter in his new book, Mr Phelan suggests it's a case of “the green-eyed monster”. Mr Shatter claims the Taoiseach was not obsessed with his media image and not collegial.

Simon Harris is no longer up to the job - but no confidence motion not on table says Sinn Féin TD

Sinn Féin believes Health Minister Simon Harris is no longer up to the job - but will not be placing a motion of no confidence before the Dáil. The party's health spokesperson Louise O'Reilly has said they “don't have the numbers” to justify trying to force Mr Harris from office over the escalating costs of the National Children's Hospital. Speaking on Independent.ie's ‘Floating Voter' podcast, Ms O'Reilly said the hospital should go ahead but more answers are needed on how the costs spiralled to €1.4bn. Sinn Fein previously placed sought to have the Dáil declare no confidence in ex-Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald and Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy – but will not go after Mr Harris in the same way. Under the confidence and supply arrangement, Fianna Fáil must abstain on confidence motions in ministers. A breach of this deal would almost certainly result in a general election. Ms O'Reilly said it was up to Fianna Fáil to take action against the minister. “They say the logic of their position is that they are doing this to save the world from Brexit and they very well might believe that. “It's less than a year since Micheál Martin went to Europe and said ‘don't worry if there is any change in personnel, there'll be no change in policy so you have nothing to worry about if there is to be an election',” the Dublin Fingal TD said. Asked why Sinn Féin won't try force Fianna Fáil's hand, she replied: “We don't the numbers at the moment. If Fianna Fáil want to make a public statement then of course we will consider. Why would be trying to do that when it won't succeed? They have said their hand is not available to forced.”

Politicians should stop objecting to housing developments in their constituency, a Fine Gael minister has said Junior Finance Minister Michael D'Arcy said it was “wrong” for TDs from all parties to oppose new developments in the middle of housing crisis. Speaking on Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast, Mr D'Arcy said: “Public representatives need to stop objecting to housing estates and housing schemes. I think it's wrong. They shouldn't be doing because we need houses and we need housing.” “Sometimes the development isn't correct and I know and understand that but I don't think a public representative should object to housing today because by God we need housing,” he added. Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy also asked TDs to stop objecting to new developments during a Dáil debate on housing. Mr D'Arcy also said he believed all social welfare payment should be increased in next Tuesday's Budget. And he said the Government was working towards increasing the entry point for the top rate of tax to €40,000. The minister also discussed the measures he is taking to reduce the cost of car insurance. This includes introducing a publicly available list of all motoring claims and pay outs.

The actions of housing activists occupying vacant buildings in Dublin have once more captured the public imagination and highlighted the ever worsening housing crisis. Just over two weeks ago housing campaigners occupied a building on Summerhill in Dublin’s inner city. Ten days later they were ordered to leave by the high court. But this is not a short term protest. So last Friday they took over a vacant property on North Frederick St and are demanding that Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy uses the powers of the state to Compulsory Purchase (CPO) such private vacant properties and use them for ‘public use’, such as homeless accommodation or apartments for public housing. As a genuinely independent media dedicated to highlighting real alternatives, this Reboot Republic Podcast is recorded directly inside the occupation with two spokespeople from the housing campaign.
