The Tánaiste has promised to explore safety upgrades on a notorious section of a Clare national secondary route. Residents of Darragh have been campaigning for a speed limit review and warning signage on a 2km stretch of the N68 between Darragh's North Cross and Bansha Cross. There have been 33 collisions officially recorded on the route, which have led to four fatalities since 2007 alone. Responding to Clare Sinn Féin TD Donna McGettigan in the Dáil, Tánaiste Simon Harris says he will press the Transport Minister on the matter.
The Foreign Affairs Minister has convened a meeting of the Government Trade Forum, to discuss the situation in the Middle East and other international developments. Monday's meeting at Government Buildings was attended by Tánaiste Simon Harris and several other ministers. Minister Helen McEntee updated them on a virtual meeting with other EU foreign ministers on Sunday night, during which they called for a de-escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, Monday saw the US and Israel attack Iran for a third day, with Tehran continuing retaliatory strikes. The conflict has expanded, with Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon trading fire. All Irish Defence Forces personnel serving with Unifil are safe and accounted for. Explosions were heard across the region and reported in Jerusalem, as well as Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Hassan Famaraz, Iranian man based in Ennis and Niamh McNamara, former Ennis resident and Clare FM Producer, living in the UAE on Tuesday's Morning Focus. Ellen Coyne and Cormac McQuinn join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· In the Dáil on Wednesday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin issued an apology on behalf of the State to survivors of abuse in industrial and reformatory schools. Nobody doubts the sincerity of such apologies, but given the number of them over the years, perhaps their rhetoric should be matched with the practicalities and supports survivors need.· With the Residential Tenancies Bill comes into effect from March 1st, Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty was accused of “scaremongering and misinformation” by Tánaiste Simon Harris in the Dáil on Thursday. Doherty pointed to research carried out by I-Res Reit, the State's largest corporate landlord, which suggested a potential increase in rent returns of up to 25 per cent resulting from the new rent rules. The new rules are designed to attract new investors into the rental property sector, and what could be more attractive than charging higher rents?· The glacial speed at which vital infrastructure projects such as the Greater Dublin Drainage Project are delivered here could be accelerated by the establishment of a new Infrastructure Regulatory Simplification Unit in Minister for Public Expenditure and Infrastructure Jack Chambers's department.· And the upcoming byelections in Dublin Central and Galway West, with seats vacated by Paschal Donohoe and Catherine Connolly respectively, are looking increasingly hard to call.Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris announced a plan this week to introduce a new savings scheme to unlock the €170 billion that people here are keeping in mostly low-yield bank deposit accounts. His plan is to devise a scheme that generates good returns for savers in a way that puts the money on deposit to better use in the economy.Cliff Taylor of The Irish Times covered the story this week, he joins host Ciarán Hancock in studio to assess how such a scheme might work and what might be on the table come budget time.In the second half of this episode, we discuss how visitor numbers to Ireland were down last year, the weather in 2026 has been lousy so far and the country has been getting a reputation as a high-cost location for a holiday. On the flip side of the coin, the Government has decided to scrap the passenger cap at Dublin Airport and has eased rules that would have banned short term holiday lets in rural locations.Eoghan O'Mara Walsh is chief executive of the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation and joined Ciarán on the line to discuss the issues facing the tourism industry this year and its likely asks of Government in the next budget. And with St Patrick's Day on the horizon and it being the typical starting point of the Irish tourism season, how is the year ahead shaping up for the industry?Produced by John Casey with JJ Vernon on sound. Eoin McGee is one of Ireland's best-known financial advisors, he's also a TV presenter and an author. His latest book is called 'How to Achieve Financial Freedom – create enough wealth to stop working' in which he shares advice about how we can all take more control of our wallets and become a lot more financially independent as a result. In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, Eoin tells me about the book, but we also talk a lot about our attitudes to money in Ireland and why it isn't particularly healthy, certainly compared to places like the US. He shares a very personal story from his childhood, about a difficult situation that made him want to be a financial advisor when he got older; we talk about the importance of being in the moment, why working longer can be better than retirement, and lots more.COMEDY – the non-stop rain is causing consternation across the country, and Simon Harris is taking matters into his own hands.Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand
