After catching up on Salt Lake City divorce drama and the mediocre manosphere that I believe contributed to it, we jump into a review of the psychological "horror" film, Obsession. An instant classic, Obsession tells the story of a cowardly man's choice to put his crush under a spell to love him, rather than muster the courage to express his feelings and accept whatever hers may be. His choice to force his will upon her has devastating consequences for her, for him, and their entire community, but his resolve to have her love him remains. The movie is layered and filled with clues about motivations and messages regarding both the characters and the script. It's a powerful cautionary tale about how quiet, polite, unassuming men can still be dangerous and how narcissism, patriarchy, and fear can warp understanding what love is and isn't. Then, a review of the book Yesteryear, by Caro Claire Burke, another psychological ride. This one takes you into the mind of a "modern day trad wife" as her commitment to being a perfect, content generating, wife and mother plays out. With a fixation on a life mirroring that of the early frontier and wild west, Natalie, strives to project a specific image and aesthetic. Yet, she hides the unsavory truth of her hard forged reality, perhaps to herself most of all. While the main hook is Natalie suddenly waking up in the early 1800's, the book's observations on centering men, the roles women play to enable that illusion, and the high stakes of religious extremism, are also primary topics. We close with my plug for a series of books that I've recently discovered, the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. The series begins by introducing a girl named Juliette as she's trapped in an asylum due to her dangerous supernatural powers. From there, it evolves into a dystopian, la resistance, self acceptance, enemies to lovers arc - with a love triangle. I'll do a more thorough review when I finish all the books! Colonel Merryl Tengsedal is a trailblazer in the field of aviation and a symbol of perseverance and excellence. She is notably recognized as the first and only African American woman to pilot the U-2 “Dragon Lady,” a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft in the United States Air Force. Her journey to this remarkable achievement began with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Haven, where she was one of only three women in her program and actively participated in basketball and ROTC. Merryl's military career started in the Navy as a commissioned officer after graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1994. She excelled as a Naval Aviator, piloting the SH-60B Seahawk Helicopter and serving in various global locations, including the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean. Her transition to the Air Force marked a historic moment as she became the only Black woman to fly the U-2 spy plane, accumulating over 1,000 flight hours and participating in critical reconnaissance missions worldwide. In addition to her flying career, Merryl has held significant leadership roles, such as the Chief of Flight Safety for the 9th Reconnaissance Wing, Director of Operations for the 9th Physiological Support Squadron, and Commander of Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Detachment 2 at Palmdale, CA. On the afternoon of 10th January 1883, King Cetshwayo kaMpande climbed off a skiff and onto the beach at Port Dunford, surviving the heavy and powerful surf. The British had been using this stretch of desolate sand as their transport hub into Zululand, which is south of the modern harbour of Richard's Bay. King Cetshwayo then stepped out of the wet boat onto the sand of Port Durnford, where he was formally met by British official Sir Theophilus Shepstone to begin his return to Zululand. Cetshwayo looked around — there was no welcoming committee of his people. Shepstone has purposely kept the date of the King's return a secret, this after 3 years in exile. It was just the sort of thing at which Theophilus excelled — a thoughtful deviousness. The British brought him back to lead a detachment of 6th Dragoons to greet the old Zulu king, and to escort Cetshwayo back to Mthonjaneni above the the emaKhosini valley. Which he did. Shortly after they arrived in early January, Mandlakazi leader Zibhebu came to Mthonjaneni, but not to pay respects to Cetshwayo, he made a grand point of greeting Shepstone, his patron, and ignoring the king. Zululand had been fractured, and Cetshwayo now led a broken people where the different regions were alienated from royal control. Cetshwayo had been restored, but their country was divided. The uSuthu regiment in particular were aghast they were forced to remain under Zibhebhu's rule — he was a tyrant and hated. For the previous 12 months, a game of smoke and mirrors had confounded the king. When he returned from visiting Queen Victoria in England in September 1882, he had been told he was to return home almost immediately. The actual boundaries of his kingdom were undefined. Natal officials were terrified of Cetshwayo, sure that he would invoke the spirits of Dingana and Shaka, and the Zulu would rise up once more. They wanted to confine Cetshwayo to the central portion of his former kingdom, where he would be managed by a Resident supervisor Henry Francis Fynn Junior. In the north, Zibhebhu, Cetshwayo's implacable enemy, would rule independently — the only independent chief out of the 13 selected by the British to rule over different territories in Zululand. Zibhebhu took control over the land north of the Black Mfolozi, land which was dominated by pro-Cetshwayo locals and Zibhebhu was distinctly anti-Cetshwayo. It was into this newly divvied up landscape that Cetshwayo returned in early 1883. Shepstone officiated over the handover of power, and once again, was forced to face a plethora of complaints delivered by the king's men, including Mnyamana's induna Hemulaana. The kings restoration, they said, was a disgrace. Ever the thin-skinned settler, Shepstone was outraged, he was merely a clerk, sent by the British to dot a few I's and cross a few T's, he had no power to alter any of the conditions. After the tongue lashing, he and the dragoons hurried back to the safety of Natal muttering about the insults they'd been forced to endure. With stuffy old Shepstone gone, the Zulu let their hair down == Let the party begin — but the reality of his situation was clear to Cetshwayo. While his homestead at oNdini had been reinstated east of the original town burned down by the British, it was smaller. Still, almost 1000 huts were built in the traditional stye of an ikhanda with the isigodlo at the top, all protocols observed. Well almost all. A large number of senior indunas and chiefs were absent. After Shepstone left, Zibhebhu left too. Hamu stayed aaway. Mfanawendlela did arrive, somewhat shamefaced, it was he who had committed a sacrilege of planting crops on King Mpande's Grave on Mahlabathini plain. But things had changed, when he walked into the isigodlo, he did not prostrate himself before the Zulu king, but idled up to one of the chairs and sat down as if he was Cetshwayo's equal.

After the ChorusDo not come to me now  as soft advice.Not as the bright smile  at the church door.  Not as the chorus swelling  through the speakers,  all uplift  and upward hands.The room is singing  its predictable liturgy —  the slow one,  the anthem,  the key change meant  to lift the heart —and something in me  locks.The body remembers  what the mouth  still cannot say.One chord,  and the old rooms open.The brand.  The corporate style.  The lanyards.  The smoothness of it all.Words weaponised  like daggers:‘you bring nothing of value  to this place.'And suddenly I am back there,  inside the room  where harm was done  and called itself ministry.So come like weather.Come like rain  against the chapel windows  when the singing grows too loud,  when joy itself  feels like threat.Break the locked places.There are pews inside me  still occupied by ghosts,  whole liturgies of fear  recited in the blood,  old shames hanging there  like vestments  in the dark.I have called it resilience.  I have called it faith.  I have called it carrying on.Still the walls sweat.Still the heart,  that small battered flat  above the old sanctuary,  lets in every echo  except peace.So come not as guest  but as the one  who knows the building  was never theirs.Kick in the swollen door.Shatter the stained glass  of the god they handed me —  the one who looked too much  like power,  too much like control,  too much like men  who mistook harm  for holiness.Burn what must burn.The false shepherd.  The polished liturgy.  The songs that ask the wounded  to rise too quickly.Batter my heart,  threefold mercy,  Father of the bruised,  Christ of the locked room,  Wild Goose moving  not in the amplifier's roar  but in the tremor beneath it.Undo me.Not as they undid me.Not to wound  but to make room  for breath.For I have been  an occupied city,  streets patrolled by fear,  every chorus a siren,  every bridge lifted in worship  a trigger.

Joseph . . . sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet. — Acts 4:36-37 When you see a person who has met Jesus and who is changing to live more and more like Jesus, you know that something new is going on. It means that Jesus is alive in them and that the resurrection has really happened!We see some examples in our text for today. Just as we saw in Acts 2:41-47 (April 14), we see the early Christians united with one another, sharing with one another, and giving generously to support one another. Some even sold their land or houses and gave the money “to anyone who had need.”One example mentions Joseph, a Jewish man from Cyprus who is now a believer in Christ. His actions give a clear sign that his life has changed. He sold some property that he owned, and he gave the money to be used for building up the community of believers in Christ. Joseph's generosity shows that the generous Lord Jesus is living in his heart. In this picture of Joseph we see a new creation, evidence of the resurrected Christ.The life and power of the resurrected Jesus keep changing us still today. The living Jesus finds his way into human lives, takes up a transforming presence within them, and they become new creations. They also become signs that the Lord's big, new creation is coming to life. Father, turn us broken people into signposts of Jesus' resurrection, proof that a new creation is on the way. Shatter all the ways in which we still reflect anything unrelated to Jesus. We pray in his name. Amen.
