While useful tools and educational programs are being developed to address childcare needs and farm child safety, there are still many social, practical, and monetary challenges to overcome. Dr. Florence Becot joins us again to wrap up our three-part series. This time, we explore the broader impact of childcare expenses on farm families' ability to earn a living and the need for more extensive support initiatives in rural areas to mitigate some of these challenges. This episode highlights the need for comprehensive support that goes beyond simply addressing childcare access and emphasizes the importance of stable farm income and affordable health insurance to enable farmers to successfully balance work and family responsibilities. Episode ResourcesA Roadmap for Delivering Child Care in Agricultural Communities, National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety & Migrant Clinicians Network, WorkbookSafe Play Posters, Cultivate SafetyChild Agricultural Safety Brochure, National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety [PDF]Child/Youth Agricultural Safety Checklist, National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety [PDF]

Farm families face similar childcare access and affordability challenges as other working families nationwide, yet research on their specific experiences and needs is limited. Existing research lacks a deep understanding of how farm families actually use childcare, and what types of arrangements and support systems would motivate them to utilize childcare more. In this episode, we are joined by Florence Becot, nationwide insurance early career professor in agricultural safety and health and a faculty member at Penn State University. Dr. Becot's work contributes to the field of agricultural health and safety by examining how under-appreciated factors such as childcare, health care, and health insurance shape farm families' ability and willingness to adopt farm safety practices and seek medical care. We discuss Dr. Becot's current study, which highlights the significant, often overlooked, mental health challenges faced by farm women while raising children. Episode ResourcesCultivate Safety, Resource Search WebpageCreating Safe Play Areas on Farms, National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health; National Farm Medicine Center; Marshfield Clinic, BookletSafe Play Areas, Cultivate Safety, Handout [PDF]Play Ideas, Cultivate Safety, Handout [PDF]

Send us a textHAPPY NATIONAL CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK DAY!As you probably can tell, your papa is pretty excited about this one. Knowing personally the hard work and dedication it takes to create a children's book really helps me appreciate this day. When I wrote our books, I wanted to literally shrink down to the size of a kid and create a conversation with them, allowing them to create their own questions; giving them the control  to hopefully allow light bulbs to turn on for both child and parent at the time when their bedroom lights turn off and night lights brighten the room right before bed. For this show, I really wanted to showcase happiness and nostalgia. Join Richard in this weeks episode of the veg grower podcast. This week Richard is having another go at straw bale gardening in the kitchen garden. Down the allotment Richard has been sowing lots of seeds directly into the ground, and finally Richard is joined by Lee Connolly The Skinny Jean Gardener to discuss national kids gardening week. Of course chef Scott is also back with another delicious recipe. Kitchen garden update: Straw Bale Gardening. A couple of years ago Richard tried Straw Bale Gardening. A method of growing plants in straw bales. However, when Richard tried he didn't feel it was as successful as it could be, so this year he decided to give it another go. Richard has got 2 straw bales and set them in position and started the conditioning phase of this system. The conditioning phase is where Richard believed he went wrong last time as he used the incorrect fertiliser to start it off. This time he is using urea to add a high amount of nitrogen to the straw bales. This should hopefully get the bales started correctly but there is a routine to this conditioning phase as below. Day 11/2 cup urea per baleWater until saturatedDay 2Water until saturatedDay 31/2 cup urea per baleWater until saturatedDay 45litre water per baleDay 51/2 cup urea per bale5litre per baleDay 65litre per baleDay 71/4 cup urea per bale5litre per baleDay 81/4 cup urea per bale5litre per baleDay 91/4 cup urea per bale5litre per baleDay 101 cup balanced fertiliser5litre per baleDay 111 cup balanced fertiliser5litre per baleDay 121 cup balanced fertiliser5litre per bale After this the straw bales are ready for planting. Check out the Digwell YouTube Channel for more. Allotment update: Sowing Seeds Directly. Down on the allotment Richard has been busy clearing and preparing the allotment for the growing season. But that also includes sowing a few seeds directly, which is something Richard rarely does. However some seeds do need direct sowing and they include: Carrots Parsnips Peas Links are included to Premier seeds direct. Chef Scott's recipe of the week. Chef Scott is back with his recipe of the week and this weeks its another simple dish using radishes. Roasted Radishes with feta is sure to delight anyone who eats this dish. National Kids Gardening Week. In the last segment this week Richard is joined by his friend and fellow gardening podcaster, Lee Connelly The Skinny Jean Gardener. Lee's here this week to promote and upcoming event, National Children's gardening week. THe plan is to get as many children and families out into the garden this week, with prizes up for grabs. In this episode, we explore the important role that terminology plays in how agricultural injuries and fatalities are reported in the media. Dr. Barbra Lee and Melissa Ploeckelman, from the National Children's Center for Rural and Ag Health and Safety in Marshfield, WI, stress the importance of using precise, consistent language that reflects the gravity of these incidents and respects the lives affected. The episode also touches on the impact of sensationalism and vague reporting, which can undermine the true extent of farm safety issues. By advocating for more thoughtful and informed language, the podcast aims to raise awareness and foster greater attention to the often-overlooked dangers of the farming profession. As we start a new year, reflection and intentionality are key. I've been through years of just "surviving"—stuck in routines and letting circumstances dictate my life. But reclaiming my mindset, health, and habits allowed me to shift from surviving to thriving. The turning point came when I realized that you can't pour from an empty cup. Self-care isn't selfish. It's foundational. When you prioritize your health, you create a ripple effect of wellness for your family. What would a life you love look like? Write it down. Visualize it. Take small, consistent steps to make it real. When you focus on your mind, body, and mouth connection, you're not just improving your life—you're creating a legacy of health for generations. Key Takeaways:- Redirect negativity by focusing on small accomplishments.- Start journaling or listening to uplifting voices like Wayne Dyer and Joe Dispenza.- Your health impacts your energy, mood, and relationships.- Your habits shape your family's health- February is National Children's Dental Health Month—a perfect time to build simple, healthy routines as a family.- Create a Vision for 2025: Imagine waking up energized, calm, and present. “You have to create the bridge between the instructor and the student. Talk about your passion about the music, why you're performing it, why the piece is so special, and mix some humor in there. Once that engagement happens, everything you teach is automatically transferred because all the performers want that excellence for themselves, which is different than just telling people what to do. When you can inspire them to really want it, that's when the results become infinitely spectacular.”Luke McEndarfer is a GRAMMY Award-winning American conductor and one of the most compelling visionaries in the classical music world today. His dynamic career spanning over two decades has been shaped by an unwavering commitment to ambitious innovation, artistic creativity, and musical excellence. Currently, he serves as Artistic Director, President and CEO of the National Children's Chorus, one of the fastest-growing and most successful youth arts organizations in the United States. In 2004, McEndarfer was appointed director of the acclaimed Paulist Choristers, and in 2008 his dream to create the National Children's Chorus took flight. Since then, the NCC has grown from only sixteen families in Los Angeles to over one thousand across the country. McEndarfer's Senior Division vocalists are GRAMMY Award-winning, having received music's highest honor for Best Choral Performance in 2022. In 2020, McEndarfer initiated the building of a new annual opera camp in Vail, Colorado, that would grow to engage developing voices in the art of opera, curated with an extraordinary curriculum designed exclusively for youth education.McEndarfer's background and experience encompass numerous conducting appearances on both coasts featuring adult choral and symphonic masterworks. Equally at home in the studio, he has worked on several motion picture soundtracks, such as Escape from Tomorrow, Snowmen, and Imagine That. Television credits include conducting performances and studio appearances with CNN, CBS, ABC, and Fox, as well as NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Since the age of six, McEndarfer has studied piano extensively, winning competitions and musical honors with the Music Teachers' Association of California. He is a two-time graduate of UCLA, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and a Master of Music degree in conducting. To get in touch with Luke, you can find him on Facebook or Instagram (@LukeMcEndarfer) or find the National Children's Chorus on their website (nationalchildrenschorus.com), on Instagram (@nationalchildrenschorus), or on Facebook (@nationalchildrenschorus).Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Now I'm in a phase where I want to adore every note that's on the page. I want every note that's on the page to represent me well and to reflect who I am -- somebody who sees herself in partnership with conductors, in partnership with choristers, making music together.”Canadian composer and educator Sarah Quartel is known for her fresh and exciting approach to choral music. The National Children's Alliance (or NCA) is a Washington, D.C.-based network of almost 1,000 Children's Advocacy Centers (or CACs) across the United States. These centers offer crucial services to children affected by abuse, providing them with a safe space to share their stories and access a diverse team of professionals, from health practitioners to law enforcement. CACs have trained nearly 1.6 million people in child abuse prevention, and last year alone, CACs served over 380,000 children. But with this year's $600,000 cut to the Victims of Crime Act funding, CACs now face dire challenges. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Teresa Huizar, CEO of the NCA, to discuss what these cuts mean for CACs and the vulnerable children who rely on them. We explore how these centers operate, the impact of the funding loss, and various child abuse-related topics. Today's guest really brings back some memories. Please welcome Sheila Shukla from Magnolia Street String Band. Sheila and I go way back. Like WAAAAAY back, all the way to elementary school. There's a little bit of catching up in this episode, sprinkled throughout Sheila's story. She talks about how she used to force her sister, Rita, to help her figure out harmonies she was hearing before they could go out and play. And eventually, growing up in 80's and 90's New Jersey, she got into metal and alternative music pretty heavily.  But at one point, she became mesmerized by bluegrass. She tells exactly what happened and when it happened. She became so obsessed with the sound in college and had a great support system to help her learn guitar and figure out how to play what she was hearing in her head. But life snuck in and put some of the musical ambitions on hold for a bit. But music has a tendency to make its way to the forefront. And so it did with Sheila. She met some like-minded folks and formed Magnolia Street String Band in 2013. The band has a very impressive pedigree and a beautiful classic bluegrass sound.  After some false starts, they released their debut in 2019 and then had to wait with the rest of the world for things to open up post-COVID to play again. Sheila and the band have a new album coming out and it's unique in the bluegrass world. It's called By The Light Of The Moon and it's basically a children's album that doesn't sound childish. It's written for kids, keeping in mind that parents have to listen to it at the same time. So why not make it enjoyable for both? Look for it starting on National Children's Music Day, October 4th.
