Meet the man challenging the Libs for the leadership of Tasmania: Dean Winter. It's been only 15 months since Jeremy Rockliff was re-elected the Premier of Tasmania, but last month a nail-biting, nearly-tied no-confidence vote in the government threw the state into political uncertainty. Opposition Leader Dean Winter was behind that motion. Now Tasmanians are returning to the polls on Saturday 19 July. This week he speaks to us about why he did it, how the Liberals have bungled the budget, and what he envisions for the future of Tasmania.Donate here: https://taslabor.org.au/donate/donate/Volunteer here: https://taslabor.org.au/get-involved/volunteer/New episodes every Friday.Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/SociallyDemocraticFollow Us on Socials:Facebook (https://tr.ee/9jGIOy)Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/sociallydemocratic)LinkedIn (https://tr.ee/YxyYJh)Twitter (https://x.com/SocialDemPod)Bluesky (https://tr.ee/EqdapC)YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@DunnStreet)The presenting sponsor of the Socially Democratic podcast is Dunn Street. In the latest Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, and journalist Chris Steyn talk about the latest political drama. De Beer charges that South Africa is in pseudo undercover dictatorship - despite the African National Congress (ANC) being “in ICU”. He comments on all the options ranging from a Vote of No Confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa to Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille dropping either the nuclear bomb or atom bomb “which she says she holds”. He weighs the strengths of the factions in the ANC and says, in the last NEC, there was such a stand-off between President Cyril Ramaphosa and SG Fikile Mbalula over the party staying in the GNU that rumour has it that the president actually got up and left. Meanwhile, word on the street has it that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is losing popularity. As for future elections, De Beer warns: “The ANC has an attitude with its gatherings, its giving of Kentucky, its giving of the T-shirt and the cap, and it wins those logistics every time. And until the DA and all of us don't get it that we've got to fight fire with fire, we will never get that power change in this country.” Turning to “murder by power', De Beer laments the assassination of the Ekhurhuleni Audit Chief, as well as the alleged involvement of Special Forces soldiers in a “hitsquad unit to kidnap and take people out”.

The “embarrassment of being removed” is “foremost” in the thinking of President Cyril Ramaphosa. So says political analyst Piet Croucamp who deems the break between the president and African National Congress (ANC) Chair Gwede Mantashe as irreparable. “Mantashe was the person who knocked on Thabo Mbeki's door to tell him that time is up - and he was the one who knocked on Jacob Zuma's door to tell him time is up. If there's one thing that Ramaphosa and those around him fear most, it is that one day the National Executive Committee of the ANC makes a decision which could be perceived as a Motion of No Confidence and Gwede Mantashe comes and knocks on your door. And I think that's the big fear that Ramaphosa has.” Croucamp also gives his take on the real reason MKP SG Floyd Shivambu was redeployed; reveals his pick for the next leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA); comments on the performance of the Government of National Unity ((GNU); as well as the Afrikaner Trek to America. He also gazes into the future of South Africa in 10 years' time. “…there will not be a single party that will govern South Africa alone in the next two or three elections…”

The Dáil will vote on a confidence motion in the Ceann Comhairle for the first time in its history today. Opposition parties have come together to submit the motion in Verona Murphy after her handling of last week's speaking time row. The opposition alleges Ms Murphy colluded with the Government parties to get the new speaking times for the Regional TDs and coalition backbenchers over the line. The Ceann Comhairle, who is expected to survive the vote, has said she has no intention of going anywhere. Meanwhile, Donald Trump will unveil his tariff plans tomorrow(Wednesday), with heavy import duties expected to be imposed on the EU. The US President's tariffs will be widespread and will target countries across the world in what he's calling 'Liberation Day.' Cars, steel, pharmaceuticals and other goods will be hit with extra charges. With nearly a thousand Irish exporters likely to be hit, there are fears about what it could mean for tens of thousands of Irish jobs The Government and the EU have held talks about how best to protect Irish pharma from Donald Trump's tariffs. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Tulla Fianna Fáil Minister, Timmy Dooley and Shannon Sinn Féin TD, Donna McGettigan.
