Tyler Anbinder examines the remarkable industrial success of Phelan and Collender, who mass-produced high-quality billiard tables. Their innovation in table cushions led to a dominant market position, and they famously gifted a custom gold-ornamented table to Ulysses S. Grant. Their massive factory on 10th Avenue symbolized the pinnacle of Irishentrepreneurial achievement. Anbinder concludes by debunking the myth that the famine Irish were permanently stuck in poverty. His research reveals they were a highly ambitious and determined group who successfully utilized networking and grit to climb the socioeconomic ladder in the United States. (8)1861 CHURCH STREET

8. The Billiard Kings and Remarkable Upward Mobility The partnership of Michael Phelan and Hugh Collenderrevolutionized American billiards by patenting improved table cushions. Their business was so successful that they manufactured a gold-ornamented pool table for General Ulysses S. Grant, which was later installed in the White House. At its peak, their massive factory spanned an entire city block on New York's 10th Avenue. Tyler Anbinder concludes that the history of Famine immigrants is one of surprising upward mobility. It's Friday, April 24th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Ugandan evangelist stabbed to death by Muslims Suspected Muslim extremists, posing as taxi drivers on April 9th, killed a Christian evangelist in central Uganda, Africa shortly after he preached at a Gospel event, reports Morning Star News. They beat and stabbed Alfred Kitenga at about 9:30 p.m. along the Northern Bypass in the Wakiso District, after he and his wife, Anna Grace, were returning home from preaching in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. One local church leader said, “This is a painful loss for the body of Christ.” In John 15:19, Jesus said, "If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." Iran says first Strait of Hormuz toll revenues banked Hamidreza Hajibabaei, the deputy speaker of Iran's parliament, claimed that Iran, not the United States, was now making demands after the first revenues for newly implemented tolls on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz were deposited into Iran's central bank, reports MSN. During a public gathering in the western city of Kuhdasht, ABC News reported that he said, "We have control over this Strait. If the United States continues on its current course, no vessels will pass through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not engaged in negotiations -- rather, we are making demands." The Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital waterway for trade along the Persian Gulf, is responsible for an estimated 20% of the world's oil supply traveling through. The blockade has led to soaring gas prices in the United States as the price of oil surpassed $100 per barrel multiple times. Trump orders U.S. Navy to shoot and kill any boat placing mines On Thursday, President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” any boat caught putting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as his administration ramps up mine-clearing efforts in the critical waterway, reports TheHill.com. He added, “Additionally, our mine ‘sweepers' are clearing the Strait right now. I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at a tripled-up level!” Trump retrieves 10-year-old child from Cuba in transgender drama The Trump administration took the unusual step this week of sending a government plane to Cuba to return a 10-year-old boy from Utah who is at the center of a complicated and contentious custody fight involving the child's gender identity, reports NBC News. The boy's 42-year-old father, Mr. Ethington, who is pretending to be a woman himself, is accused of taking his son to Cuba without the permission from the biological mother, with whom he has shared custody. Federal and state authorities sought the return of the boy after a family member expressed concern that Mr. Ethington went to Havana, Cuba to get gender transition surgery for the boy. Mr. Ethington was arrested along with his 32-year-old partner, Blue, and charged in the U.S. with international parental kidnapping. The couple traveled with the boy to Canada, ostensibly for a camping trip in late March with Blue's 3-year-old child. However, the two adults deviously turned off their phones, after telling the older child's mother they'd arrived in Canada. Then, they flew from Vancouver to Mexico and then to Cuba on April 1. Navy secretary fired after feud over Trump's ‘Golden Fleet' with Pentagon leaders Secretary of the Navy John Phelan was fired on April 22nd after months of feuding with his Pentagon bosses, particularly over his handling of President Trump's “Golden Fleet” shipbuilding initiative, reports the New York Post. Tensions among Phelan, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy War Secretary Stephen Feinberg had been simmering for months. According to one GOP source, Phelan's leadership style was “incongruent” with Hegseth and Feinberg. The source said, “The administration really wanted to accelerate the shipbuilding program because of the president's agenda … and the secretary seemed incapable of accomplishing those goals, and he wasn't well-liked. When you combine incompetence with arrogance, it usually doesn't end well.” Deputy War Secretary Feinberg had been gradually diverting responsibility for the major project away from Phelan, the New York Times reported.  Hung Cao, the Naval undersecretary, is now set to replace him. Virginia voters gave 10 of 11 Congressional seats to Democrats On Tuesday, the Virginia Democrat officials successfully convinced voters to narrowly approve a constitutionally questionable redistricting push to give 10 out of the 11 U.S. congressional seats to the Democrats, a change that one judge ruled to be unconstitutional, reports ABC News. The Democrats had previously held 6 Congressional seats in Virginia. Florida's possible redistricting could help ensure more GOP seats In light of the Virginia election, the red state of Florida is now in the spotlight, reports JustTheNews. In the Sunshine State, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is spearheading an effort to redraw their state's congressional districts before the midterm elections. That would help to ensure the Republicans could retain their majority in the House, and can fully implement President Trump's agenda. Another medical emergency uncovered at Colorado Planned Parenthood Yet another medical emergency was spotted this month at a Colorado Planned Parenthood abortion mill with a checkered history on patient safety, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Operation Rescue reported that an ambulance was spotted on April 10 arriving at the Fort Collins Planned Parenthood. The EMS radio dispatch revealed that a 19-year-old woman came in a day after her abortion complaining of chest pains. The EMS' use of the code “Charlie Medical” indicated fears that the situation was potentially life-threatening. Abortion mills across the country are regularly flagged for harming mothers through botched abortions, unsanitary tools and environments, and lack of regulatory protections such as requirements for staff to secure admitting privileges at nearby hospitals in the event of complications. The birth of the “In God We Trust” motto And finally, on April 22nd,1864, the motto "In God We Trust," which was conceived during the American Civil War, first appeared on American coinage. By a joint resolution of Congress, it was adopted as our national motto in 1956, replacing the previous one: “Out of many, one.” In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner, including this seldom heard fourth verse, which references the importance of trusting God as a nation. Listen. “O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - "In God is our trust," And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave” (applause and cheers) Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He chose for His inheritance." The US is maintaining a naval blockade on ships going to and from Iran’s ports, which Iran calls a violation of the ceasefire, while Iran is keeping Hormuz closed to almost all other international traffic. The blockade and closure of the Strait of Hormuz have led to increased oil prices and concerns about supply shortages and a global inflation crisis2) Navy Secretary John Phelan was fired after clashing with top leaders at the Pentagon, including over administration efforts to revive US shipbuilding. Phelan was pushed out after butting heads with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg over President Trump’s focus on a new US “Golden Fleet." Undersecretary Hung Cao will replace Phelan, according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, who said Phelan was stepping down “effective immediately."3) Tesla anticipates billions of dollars in additional spending this year to support Elon Musk’s ambitions to transform the company into an AI and robotics company. Capital expenditures this year will exceed $25 billion, roughly three times last year’s outlay, to be put toward a dramatic expansion of factory operations and initiatives such as production of its Optimus humanoid robot. The investments will support production of key products including Cybercab, Semi and an updated version of its Megapack battery storage system, with Tesla remaining on track to start making these products.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stephen shares the story behind Movement Mortgage and how a bold vision during the 2008 financial crisis led to a company built on love, purpose, and impact. From redefining leadership to transforming communities through education and service, this conversation challenges the way we think about success in business. If you've ever wondered how faith, purpose, and entrepreneurship can actually work together—this one hits deep. It’s a new day at Loras, as the Duhawks have a new head coach in former St. John’s defensive coordinator Brandon Novak, are hoping to generate some buzz of their own in Dubuque, Iowa, and looking to take a step forward for a program which hasn’t won more than five games in a season since 2008. Novak has filled his key assistant coaching slots with some young guys, he inherits a non-conference schedule already laid out for him, and he has to adjust from wearing red for more than a quarter-century to purple. We also talk with Mike Phelan, whose first year as head coach at Franklin & Marshall was incredibly successful, as the Diplomats won their rivalry game and won the Centennial Conference’s automatic bid. He talks about NFL hopeful Gary Lewis, a wide receiver for F&M last year, plus Phelan talks about who his mentors are as a coach and who he gets advice from when needed. In addition, we take your questions on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference managing to snag an automatic bid, and on Anna Maria College getting essentially a vote of no-confidence from the state of Massachusetts. Where might podcast co-host Patrick Coleman end up going for a game in Week 1 of this season? We discuss the story of Ithaca’s Derek Slywka and his pro football journey. And Patrick and fellow co-host Greg Thomas have some news about the immediate future of this podcast. Justin Bieber's Coachella comeback continues to dominate headlines with major developments across multiple fronts. According to Parade, PR expert Colm Phelan revealed that Bieber's stripped-back performance was part of a deliberately calculated comeback strategy. Rather than following typical celebrity playbook moves like redemption interviews or tearful magazine covers, Bieber's team resisted modern PR instincts and instead relied on selective silence and anticipation-building. Phelan emphasized that the Coachella headline booking wasn't the comeback itself, but rather the moment the comeback became visible after years of a carefully orchestrated rebuild. The financial impact has been staggering. According to The Street, Bieber became one of the highest-paid artists in Coachella's history, earning a reported ten million dollars total for his roughly ninety-minute sets across both weekends. Even more impressive, his fashion label Skylrk generated five point zero four million dollars in merchandise sales during Coachella's first weekend alone, surpassing the festival's previous two-week combined merchandise record of one point seven million dollars. This merchandise surge reflects the transformation of artist products into forms of identity and social currency rather than simple transactional goods. The performance itself sparked mixed reactions from fans, but ticket demand tells another story. According to Parade, Coachella pass prices surged over two hundred percent after Bieber's set, reflecting renewed attention and demand for Weekend Two. Notable attendees included former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry, who were spotted checking out the performance, according to Global News.Behind the scenes, Bieber negotiated his own Coachella deal without an agent, which Rolling Stone reported is essentially unheard of in the industry. This move underscores his hands-on approach to managing his comeback. It's worth noting that Bieber sold his entire music catalog to Hipgnosis Songs Capital back in January twenty twenty-three, a decision that initially raised questions about his Coachella performance capabilities, though reports confirm this did not limit his set.The cumulative effect positions Bieber's Coachella appearance as a watershed moment in his career trajectory, combining strategic silence, financial success, and renewed cultural relevance into what may ultimately be remembered as one of pop's most calculated comebacks. Thanks for listening to this update on Justin Bieber's recent developments. Born and raised in New York City, Grimes began composing verse at the age of six and has been writing ever since. Among Grimes’s many notable honors are the Coretta Scott King Award, the Children’s Literature Legacy Award for her “substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children,” the ALAN Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Adolescent Literature, and the Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award. 2025 CPMHOF Lifetime Achievement Award Winner:Richard (Dick) E. Phelan was born and raised in the Allison Hill area of Harrisburg. Dick had an initial love of sports and music. He graduated from John Harris HS in 1963. While in high school, he began his music career with a group of other classmates forming “The Organization” (which included future founder of The Magnificent Men, Bob Angelucci). While on the road in 1964, he found a property on N Front St. in Harrisburg that was for lease and he had a vision that would soon become “The Barn.” He soon outgrew that location and decided to go big with the acquisition of a parcel of farm property in suburban Harrisburg, on which, he opened The Raven on Thanksgiving weekend in 1965. Opening night the house band was “The Magnificent Seven” (soon to become The Magnificent Men).By 1968, Dick was looking for bigger venues to promote his musical connections. He sold The Raven (it became The Rover) and embarked on a career of promotion national acts all over the east coast. He was a road manager and promoter for such acts as Grand Funk Railroad, Uriah Heep, an early version of Chicago, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and more! He had the first US booking for a new British artist, Elton John. Rising Above: From Runaway Kid to Green Beret, Cop, and Creator This week's Team Never Quit episode brings you a raw, unfiltered, and deeply inspiring conversation with Sean Rogers - a man who has lived several lifetimes' worth of adversity, discipline, transformation, and impact. From a desert town to the global stage, Rogers' story is one of resilience forged under pressure. Born in California and raised in Phelan, his early years were marked by chaos and instability. After running away from home as a teenager, he refused to let hardship dictate his future. He finished high school on his own terms and made the bold choice to enlist in the military, setting into motion a journey that would change everything. While on active duty, Sean began his formal education and pushed himself academically with the same intensity he brought to training. He earned a master's degree in organizational leadership—all while pursuing the grueling path to become a U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret. Two deployments later, he transitioned to a new mission: serving his community as a police officer. What he witnessed on the streets during the riots following the death of George Floyd would reshape his understanding of leadership, culture, communication, and human behavior. But Sean's story didn't stop there. Driven to help the next generation of warriors, he founded The FNG Academy, an online platform designed to prepare aspiring Special Forces candidates for the mental, physical, and emotional challenges of selection. What started as a simple resource has grown into a thriving YouTube community, a robust online store, and a dedicated team committed to equipping others to step into their potential with confidence. He later chronicled his incredible life journey in his autobiography, Rising Above, a book that captures the honesty, grit, and self-discovery that have shaped his path. Sean Rogers embodies what it means to overcome circumstances, own your story, and turn pain into purpose. Whether you're chasing personal growth, preparing for a demanding path, or simply looking for motivation to push through your own challenges, this is an episode you won't want to miss. In this episode you will hear: • Recently, I finally figured out that God is what I needed to be chasing. (5:27) • I got a Master's Degree. I ran marathons. I ran ultra marathons. Trying to fill that void. I got Special Forces; I went police officer. Everything I thought would help – none of it helped. (6:49) • They develop this fear in you that if you get found out by CPS, you're gonna get separated from your siblings. So, you start learning how to hide what's going on at home. (11:06) • I used to run away constantly – to all my family member's houses, and the cops would go get me and bring me back. (18:03) • [I wanted to die] I had one of two directions to go: either get worse, and then she's gonna look back one day and say she made the right decision, or I can get better and I can look back one day and say that was the best thing that ever happened to me. (38:59) • I had to make a decision. I don't want this to define me that someone got to choose my fate. (39:53) • If I can't get my act together enough to follow through on a plan, maybe the Army will be the place where they will let me be kinda wild and refine me a little bit. (44:56) • At 67:12 to 70:30, Sean speaks about an awful mistake he made in a gunfight. • Writing books. Of all the things I've done, I've hated that the worst. (78:00) • I trust people that talk about God now. A lot of SF guys idolize. We say “Look at me.” (78:06) • What stoked my fire with God was the show “Chosen.” (80:29) • I'm claiming to be Christian, and I don't even know how cool Jesus is. (80:57) • At some point you have to say. “I'm buckling down, this is where God wants me. I'm here – thick or thin, and we're gonna get through this.” (104:52) • [Marcus] from 0-40 it's an opinion; 40-60 it's perspective; and 60+ is wisdom. • Self-help books are broken people talking to broken people to give you some temporary encouragement.
