TD Eoin Ó Broin joins Sinead not to talk politics but his homage to the original Dublin City Architect Herbert Simms - in a beautiful new book
Bainteach le Ceolfhoireann Traidisiúnta Mhuscraí - beidh siad ag seinm sa Cheoláras Náisiúnta i mBÁC an Sathran beag seo.
In 1948, Herbert Simms, under increasing pressure from the demands of his job, took his own life. The pressure came from his job as Dublin's housing architect. Between 1932 and the time of his death, Simms was responsible for building 17,000 homes for the ordinary people of Dublin. On Free State today Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin talks about his beautiful new book on Simms, produced in conjunction with the photographer Mal McCann. He looks at how Simms transformed the city and suburbs with a vision and an ideology that placed communities first. He explains too why the same could happen today and why the question shouldn't be could it happen but why isn't it happening? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Colm was born and raised in Clondalkin, Dublin, and attended Naíonra Chrónáin, Scoil Chrónáin & Coláiste Chillian. Colm's love for the language grew after spending time in East Timor, teaching English. East Timor is a multilingual country and experiencing that got him asking why we make such a song and dance about bilingualism in Ireland! When he came home he studied communications and worked with the Irish language newspapers Lá and Gaelscéal. He now works in the non-profit sector. While he was working in journalism he started writing about myths we often hear about the Irish language, that it's a dead language, etc. He later developed that into a Mythbusting campaign with Conradh na Gaeilge which has included a TedX Talk and other public talks, articles in the Irish Times and Journal.ie, interviews on Raidió na Gaeltachta, Raidió na Life, Raidió Fáilte, RTÉ Radio 1 and BBC Radio and YouTube videos. He believes these myths have a real, negative effect on the Irish language and that is the main reason for the campaign. Please join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack There is a lot going on, but we can't lose sight of the housing crisis that continues to make life miserable and unaffordable for tens of thousands of our citizens, and while the housing crisis was created by bad policies, our guest, Sinn Féin's Housing Spokesperson, Eoin Ó Broin, thinks (if given the chance) it can be fixed with good policies. We look at some of the key areas, making rent affordable and secure, cutting down on rogue holiday-rentals and implementing good just transition style planning laws. We also have a small barney over Sinn Féin's potential path to power. Palestinian Pop Star, Bashar Murad, joined us for a great chat about art, music, Palestine and the IDF's pinkwashing. Housing is today the issue of issues in Ireland, but what can we learn from looking back? Over the course of a century, the Irish state has had successes and failures when it comes to housing. Eoin Ó Broin is the author of Home: Why Public Housing is the Answer, he's also someone firmly at the centre of the political debates around housing in Ireland today. On a wet day in a field in Laois, he answered my questions and a few from the floor. With thanks to Naoise Nunn and Mindfield at Electric Picnic.
