HOW THEN SHOULD WE LIVE? Honorable Submission and Holy Suffering (The Power of a Beautiful Life, Part 2)
It is easy to see people living in ease and self-indulgence and to begin to wish we had their lives. But in this passage, James makes it clear that judgment is coming on the unrighteous rich and we should neither envy them nor emulate them. What is it that the unrighteous rich do that warrant God's judgment?Sermon Outline:I. The Unrighteous Rich Hoard and Accumulate.II. The Unrighteous Rich Use Power to Abuse.III. The Unrighteous Rich Live in Luxury and Self-Indulgence.IV. How Then Should We Live? Sermon Discussion Questions:1. James condemns the unrighteous rich for hoarding their wealth. In what ways are you tempted to hoard or accumulate more than you need? How can you be more generous with what God has given you?2. James says the unrighteous rich use their power to abuse others, like withholding wages from workers. How should followers of Jesus ensure they are treating employees, contractors, etc. fairly and justly?3. The unrighteous rich live in luxury and self-indulgence. How can we evaluate whether our own lifestyle trends in this direction? What are some practical ways to limit self-indulgence?4. What stood out to you most from the positive instructions Paul gives in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 for how the rich should live? How can you apply one of those principles this week? 5. Do you find it difficult to trust God's promise that releasing our riches to generously meet needs will actually increase our joy more than hoarding those riches for ourselves? What is one step of faith you can take this week to test God's promise?
Christian Talk - As Christians, How Then Should We Live?
In recent years many have started to see the cracks of decline in Western civilisation. The "Woke Revolution" continues to sweep through education, government, and the arts, undermining confidence in the foundations of key Western ideals, and producing dramatic cultural changes in beliefs, values, and tastes. Simultaneously, geopolitical events and technological advances beyond the West threaten a very uncertain future from the one we thought we might be inheriting. Is the decline of the West a problem for Christians? Should Christians be happy to let Western culture erode? How do we seek to preserve and proclaim cultural values without confusing earthly cultures with the kingdom of God? With Michael away in the wilds of Scotland, Andy and Aaron wrestle through these important issues with theology, cultural insight, and humour, whilst opening and re-opening various rabbit-holes! Pentecost Sunday is this coming weekend, and marks the celebration of the Holy Spirit’s coming with power, signs, and wonders fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus had told His disciples that He would send Another Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, Helper – One who would be with them forever – and when He came, EVERYONE knew it! He came BOLDLY, with a GREAT COMMOTION, and EVIDENCES that no one could deny! The same Spirit and the same power that had raised Christ Jesus from the dead, now came to LIVE in them! When the Holy Spirit moved in, their lives changed immediately – and supernaturally. As we reflect on Pentecost this weekend, let’s reflect on this truth from Romans 8:11, as it applies to us, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.” … think about that! The same Holy Spirit that came in BOLDLY like a MIGHTY, ROARING WIND at that first Pentecost, now LIVES IN US! If we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, then our lives should be overflowing with EVIDENCES that He lives in us! The very SAME Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, Helper who was sent to THEM – has been sent to US! As we reflect on this truth, let’s ask ourselves the same question that Francis Schaeffer asked in the title of one of his books, “How Then Should We Live?” Let's pray. Holy Spirit, thank you for coming to be OUR Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, and Helper … One who is with US forever. Thank you for Your work in our life. Thank you for enabling us to live this life praying, sharing, and caring the way that YOU do. Thank You that You show Yourself BOLDLY, with a GREAT COMMOTION, and EVIDENCES in our lives that no one can deny. Pour out through us MORE! Love through us MORE! Live through us MORE! We ask this in all the mighty and powerful name of the Jesus Christ – Amen!

Hebrews 10:19-25 - How Then Should We Live? (8/26/18) by Spring Meadows Presbyterian Church
12/31/17 - Ephesians 1:3-6 NEW SERMON SERIES: As we begin our new sermon series “Growing In Godliness,” instead of asking ourselves “What do I want in 2018?” we will look at “What does God want from us in 2018?” Simply put, God wants in 2018 what He always wants from His people every year and every day; that we as His children and His Church would grow in holiness and sanctification. Ephesians 1:3-6 highlights God’s great love for us; while giving us His purpose for loving us: that we would be “holy and blameless before Him...” The sermon title "How Then Should We Live?" is designed to reinforce our need to grow in Godliness. Ephesians 1:3-6 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved."
