Friends of the Rosary,Today, Sunday, May 31, we observe the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, a dogma of faith which states that there is one God — eternal, incomprehensible — with three Divine Persons: Father, Son, the Holy Spirit. The Father is not more God than the Son, nor is the Son more God than the Holy Spirit. The Father is the first Divine Person; the Son is the second Divine Person, begotten from the nature of the Father from eternity; the Holy Spirit is the third Divine Person, proceeding from the Father and the Son.All three Persons contributed to and shared in the work of redemption. The Father sent His Son to earth, for "God so loved the world as to give His only-begotten Son." The Son became man and died for us. He redeemed us and made us children of God. After Christ's ascension, the Holy Spirit became our Guide and Consoler. In other words, the Father created and predestined us; on the first day of the week, He began the work of creation. The Son redeemed us; Sunday is the "Day of the Lord," the day of His resurrection. The Holy Spirit sanctified us, made us His temple; on Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended upon the infant Church. Sunday, therefore, is the day of the Most Holy Trinity. The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is a synthesis of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. This feast of the triune God, which falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost, was introduced in the ninth century and was inserted into the General Roman Calendar of the Church only in the fourteenth century by Pope John XXII.Today's solemnity supersedes the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Full Text of Readings Friday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 333 The Saint of the day is Saint Giles Mary of Saint Joseph Saint Giles Mary of Saint Joseph's Story In the same year that a power-hungry Napoleon Bonaparte led his army into Russia, Saint Giles Mary of Saint Joseph ended a life of humble service to his Franciscan community and to the citizens of Naples. Francesco was born in Taranto to very poor parents. His father's death left the 18-year-old Francesco to care for the family. Having secured their future, he entered the Friars Minor at Galatone in 1754. For 53 years, he served at St. Paschal's Hospice in Naples in various roles, such as cook, porter, or most often as official beggar for that community. “Love God, love God” was Saint Giles Mary of Saint Joseph's characteristic phrase as he gathered food for the friars and shared some of his bounty with the poor—all the while consoling the troubled and urging everyone to repent. The charity which he reflected on the streets of Naples was born in prayer and nurtured in the common life of the friars. The people whom Giles Mary met on his begging rounds nicknamed him the “Consoler of Naples.” He was canonized in 1996. Reflection People often become arrogant and power hungry when they forget their own sinfulness and ignore the gifts God has given to other people. Giles Mary had a healthy sense of his own sinfulness—not paralyzing but not superficial either. He invited men and women to recognize their own gifts and to live out their dignity as people made in God's divine image. Knowing someone like Giles Mary can help us on our own spiritual journey.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Two Year Gospel Study Week 98

Awake Us Now

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2025 58:18

The Gospel of John Week 20 Scripture: John 14:31 - 16:3. Our study of the evening of Jesus' Passover meal with His disciples continues.  In our opening verse of John 14:31 we read, "Come, let us go."  Pastor shares an ancient Christian tradition that states Jesus met with his disciples in the upper room in a location in the southwestern corner of the city of Jerusalem on the Western Hill.  Using tradition, archeological discoveries, writings from Jewish historian Josephus, and some holy speculation, Pastor puts together an amazing picture of Jesus and His disciples walk to the Garden:     ⁃    It was an evening walk.     ⁃    To get there they would have moved through the Kidron Valley to the Mount of Olives where the Garden of Gethsemane was located.     ⁃    On the way they would have passed the Temple     ⁃    According to Josephus the Temple was 150 feet tall and on the face of the temple was a massive golden grapevine with clusters of grapes made out of solid gold. The clusters stood about 6 feet high.     ⁃    What is known from rabbinical writings is that during the great feasts, (like this one at Passover) massive torches were placed in the courts of the temple. There were 4 of them and they stood 75 feet high with multiple containers of oil for each.     ⁃    They provided a tremendous amount of light in the temple and could have been seen throughout the city. So as we read, "Come, let us go," we move to the first words of chapter 15, "I am the true vine."     ⁃    And Jesus and His disciples are actually seeing the massive golden grapevine on the face of the temple as they walk. These are absolutely startling and dramatic words.     ⁃    These words would have been more significant to them then than they are to us today. What Jesus' disciples would have thought of was that the people of Israel are compared to a grapevine in the Hebrew Scriptures and they would have thought of Isaiah's Song of the Vineyard. (Isaiah 5) an analogy of what God intended the nation of Israel to be. And now Jesus is saying He is the vine. Jesus is saying He is everything that God intends for His people to be. With this analogy Jesus is saying that He is the One who gives life to the people of God. It is only by being connected to Jesus that we have life and forgiveness and hope because He is the Messiah. Unless we receive Him as such, judgement will come. As Pastor takes us through verses 1-2 of chapter 15, he shares what he personally believes and that is that the translators have possibly not translated accurately. He goes on to share that the Greek word translated in English to "cuts off" has two meanings and the correct meaning may not have been used here, that the meaning "to raise to life up" (the second meaning)should have been used.  Pastor brings in the actual care of grapevines by a good gardener and that non-producing vines are lifted up off the ground by the gardener so they can receive more light and are not cut off. Pastor makes a solid argument that the text is better translated as: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He lifts up every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful." This is all happening just hours before He will be arrested and He is making sure His disciples understand these truths. He goes on with more truths of praying in His name, loving one another and He repeats Himself. Why? Because not only did they need it repeated, but we need to hear these truths over and again. Jesus wants to make sure and re-share these fundamental truths to anchor His disciples and us in the good times and in the difficult times. Jesus goes on with more truths:     ⁃    As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you.     ⁃    Remain in My love.     ⁃    Keep His commandments (not to earn His love, but because we have His love)     ⁃    He calls His disciples His friends     ⁃    He tells them whatever you ask in My name the Father will give you.     ⁃    He tells them the world will hate them as it hates Him     ⁃    He talks of persecution, but that there will also be those who will listen. So He encourages them to speak His words and tell others. We will have difficulties in this world be we know He is with us, and He loves us!     ⁃    He shares that the Holy Spirit is coming. The Advocate. The Comforter, The Consoler. And that they will need the Holy Spirit. Then Pastor shares the story of Jacob DeShazer. It's a powerful testimony of how God changes our hearts with His Word and uses our changed hearts to impact others. Many people have come to faith after reading only this book of the Bible.  Scholarly and archeological discoveries in recent decades give us new insight on details in the Gospel of John. We can now understand it as the most Jewish rather than the most "Gentile/Greek" of the Gospels, and when we do that we see many things that we missed before. Our 2 year study of the gospels is great for large group, small group or home group study and can be started at any time!

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 336The Saint of the day is Saint Giles Mary of Saint JosephSaint Giles Mary of Saint Joseph's Story In the same year that a power-hungry Napoleon Bonaparte led his army into Russia, Giles Mary of Saint Joseph ended a life of humble service to his Franciscan community and to the citizens of Naples. “Love God, love God” was his characteristic phrase as he gathered food for the friars and shared some of his bounty with the poor—all the while consoling the troubled and urging everyone to repent. Knowing someone like Giles Mary can help us on our own spiritual journey. Friends of the Rosary: Today, the universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the Precursor or Forerunner of the Lord. “Amongst those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist,” Jesus said (Matthew xi, 10-12). Ordinarily, the Church observes the day of a saint's death as his feast, because that day marks his entrance into heaven after ending the trials of this life and gloriously triumphing over the world. To this rule, there are two notable exceptions, the birthdays of Blessed Mary and St. John the Baptist. Mary, already in the first moment of her existence, was free from original sin, and John the Baptist was cleansed of original sin in the womb of his mother Elizabeth. All other persons were stained with original sin at birth. The Lord willed to announce to men His own coming through John the Baptist, who represented the Old Covenant and the Law. John, who was born in a town of Judea, would precede and recognize the Redeemer instantly. The birth of John is observed on the day of the summer solstice, six months earlier than the nativity of Jesus on December 25 at the time of the winter solstice. In a sense, then, we are celebrating Christ's incarnation today. Christmas is a “light” feast, the same is true today as John's Fire symbolizes Christ the Light. We Christians are the light of the world and we are united in reverence and love for this prophet-saint whose life was an incomparable example of both humility and courage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 719, states that John the Baptist is “more than a prophet” (Lk 7:26). In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He is the “voice” of the Consoler who is coming (Jn 1:23; cf. Isa 40:1-3). As the Spirit of truth will also do, John “came to bear witness to the light” (Jn 1:7; cf. Jn 15:26; 5:35). “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God…. Behold, the Lamb of God” (Jn 1:33-36). Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. John the Baptist, Pray for Us! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel A. | RosaryNetwork.com, New York

Friends of the Rosary: Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity and sublime truth of the Most Holy Trinity. The dogma of faith in the Blessed Trinity — which was not revealed to the Jews of the Old Testament — is a mystery on which everything in Christianity is based. It's a prolongation of the mysteries of Christ. There is one God and in this one God there are three Divine Persons; the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Yet there are not three Gods, but one, eternal, incomprehensible God. The Father is not more God than the Son, neither is the Son more God than the Holy Spirit. The Father is the first Divine Person; the Son is the second Divine Person, begotten from the nature of the Father from eternity; the Holy Spirit is the third Divine Person, proceeding from the Father and the Son. All three Persons contributed to and shared in the work of redemption. The Father sent His Son to earth, for “God so loved the world as to give His only-begotten Son.” The Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, became man and died for us. He redeemed us and made us children of God. After Christ's ascension, the Holy Spirit became our Teacher, Leader, Guide, and Consoler. The mystery of the triune God is a synthesis of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 719 (in 'John, precursor, prophet and baptist') - John the Baptist is "more than a prophet." In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the "voice" of the Consoler who is coming. As the Spirit of truth will also do, John "came to bear witness to the light." In John's sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. "He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. and I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.... Behold, the Lamb of God." - 548 (in 'The Signs of the Kingdom of God') - The signs worked by Jesus attest that the Father has sent him. They invite belief in him. To those who turn to him in faith, he grants what they ask. So miracles strengthen faith in the One who does his Father's works; they bear witness that he is the Son of God (abbreviated). - 582 (in 'Jesus and the Law') - In presenting with divine authority the definitive interpretation of the Law, Jesus found himself confronted by certain teachers of the Law who did not accept his interpretation of the Law, guaranteed though it was by the divine signs that accompanied it (abbreviated) Got a Bible question?
