1 in 4 women go back to work less than 2 weeks after giving birth. The United States was one of the few nations in the world that doesn’t give its workers paid leave. Will a federal paid leave law ever become a reality? That is Katie Bethell's mission, as the Executive Director and Founder of Paid Leave US. In this episode Diana and Katie discuss the benefits of paid leave and how we can change the narrative and make paid leave a reality for all workers in the United States by 2022. They also discuss why paid leave is important not only for parents who welcome a child, but also for family members to take care of their aging and sick family members, as well as having paid leave to recuperate from illness. Paid Leave US believe paid leave should be accessible to all workers, including low income workers, and gig economy workers. Katie Bethell, founder of the PL+US (Paid Leave For the United States), talks about their national campaign to win paid family leave by 2022. PL+US has already had several successes within the private sector and has already won paid family leave for nearly 6 million Americans. We talk about the necessity of paid leave beyond mothers and babies; paid leave is a human right and if implemented correctly, a good national paid leave policy will include those who need to take care of aging parents, time off to care for love ones who may be sick, and adoptive parents, just to name a few scenarios. Welcome to a summer season episode swap featuring Katherine Goldstein of The Double Shift podcast. Earlier in the season, I shared my conversation with Katie Bethell, the founder of Paid Leave for the US--or PLUS, an advocacy group working to win paid leave for everyone--whether you need to care for yourself or others. While Katie and I were talking, another podcast that I follow, hosted by Katherine Goldstein, called “The Double Shift” about working mothers...also did a story--with a woman who decided that the paid leave policy at her workplace was good....but not good enough. I want you to hear what happened when she took matters into her own hands, and how the management team at the New York Times, where she worked, responded. But wait, there’s more! You’re invited to a live taping with me and Katherine Goldstein of The Double Shift when we appear together live in San Francisco August 15th as part of her “F*ck Mom-Guilt.... World Tour”. She will also be in Oakland, August 14th. Click here for tickets! America is one of only two countries in the world where you can be fired for taking a day off in order to give birth (let that sink in for a moment). As it stands, paid leave policy varies from company to company, state to state, but on a national level, there is no policy in place, no minimum requirements or baseline standard that applies to everyone. And it’s not just about moms—this lack of policy also has greater repercussions for how we define a family, in a political sense, and the relationship between the family and the workplace—men included. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand are both bringing attention to these issues, running on platforms of universal childcare, and paid medical and family leave. Katie Bethell, founder and executive director of Paid Leave for the US (PLUS), joins us this week to give us the alarming stats, talk nerdy government logistics, and offer some extremely practical advice on how we can use this particularly potent moment to push for political change. Join us this week on Inflection Point for a look at radical change in action, one decision at a time. We are independently produced and supported by listeners like you.
