In June 1992, 179 nations made two pledges that still shape every international conservation agreement today, and thirty years later, the world's most important climate conference was held inside a tropical rainforest. What happens in those halls matters—but so does everything that happens after. James Deutsch, CEO of Rainforest Trust, breaks down how a half-billion-dollar pledge helped catalyze the 30x30 target, why the Tropical Forests Forever Facility could fix a structural flaw in carbon finance, and where he sees the next window for real conservation progress. Constanza Prieto Figelist, Legal Director for Latin America at the Earth Law Center, explains how a Peruvian court recognized the Marañón River as a subject of rights, and why four articles in Ecuador's constitution have stopped more destructive projects than years of protest ever could. Catarina Nefertari of Amazônia de Pé was on the ground in Belém when COP30 arrived, and has spent years closing the distance between communities most affected by Amazon destruction and the rooms where decisions about its future are made. This is the series finale of Rewilding Amazonia. The Amazon's next chapter is still being forged. A rainy spring turned into a packed season at The Barns of Rose Hill. On this Tourism Tuesday Berryville/Clarke County edition of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael catches up with Martha Reynolds, Executive Director of The Barns of Rose Hill, to walk through what's coming next — and there is a lot. Two simultaneous gallery exhibitions, a VA250 concert series tied to traditional American roots music, a folk opera that's already sold out twice, and a benefit concert from a beloved local artist on the way. Martha previews everything from Color Stories (vivid contemporary stripes) and Jackson Foster's historic tavern signs to The Quiet Vast photography exhibit to a Portuguese artist who pairs her work with QR-coded music. Plus: the Forging a Nation film series with American Legion Post 41, Jules & the Agreeables benefit concert on June 27, Larry Keel and Jon Stickley's flatpicking bluegrass on 7/11, the return of the Orange on the Blue Ridge folk opera in August, and the final stretch of a 10-year endowment campaign that wraps August 31st — every dollar matched by the Eugene B. At a time of heightened geopolitical tension and with the acknowledgment of diverse threats to our sovereignty and security, Canada is redefining what sovereignty means and how stakeholders can contribute to the defence of our great nation. In alignment with the Government of Canada's command signal that Canada must defend its own sovereignty on its own terms, the Canadian Army is undergoing a generational modernization to become the Army Canada now needs. In parallel, the Government of Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy charts a path to a more sovereign, innovation‑driven defence industrial base, with implications for businesses, researchers, and communities across the country. On June 4th, 2026, The Empire Club of Canada welcomed Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army for a keynote entitled, Forging the Army Canada Needs: Stakeholder Opportunities to Contribute to the Defence of Canada.  The Commander laid out his vision for a modern Army and how it aligns with the Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) and broader government priorities to enhance, equip, develop and future-proof the land forces for Canada's sovereignty.Following the speech, Jody Thomas, Senior Advisor at Counsel Public Affairs moderated a fireside chat that also included Bernie Derible, Ontario's Agent General ASEAN and Ontario's Military and Defence Representative and Patrick Kelly, Director General, Defence Investment Agency, on how the private and public sector can collaborate to ensure that Canada forges the Army it needs to meet this inflection point in Canada's National Defence.

In this special collaborative episode with Dance or Die, author Holly Dee sits down with Siuli Ko in the Netherlands. Siuli has been integral to the Dutch free party rave scene since its late '80s acid punk beginnings. From fronting the noisy DIY group MINIGOD to organising some of The Hague's first basement raves, Siuli was a rebel youth with a diehard love of music and bringing people together beneath the blinding flash of a strobe. Whilst living in one of Holland's most famous squats Blauwe Aanslag, she organised the infamous Acid Planet parties where Unit Moebius and the Bunker label forged their cantankerous acid techno punk sound. Linking up with the newly exiled Spiral Tribe in the early '90s, she helped establish the Network 23 record distribution network and launched her own labels Grijs and Nocturnal State a.o. to support local talent. Four decades in, Siuli is still playing vinyl, raving, and producing multimedia exhibitions and festivals – we find out more about the extraordinary journey of this cornerstone of the scene. Hosted by Holly Dicker (aka Holly Dee). How we deploy the military domestically, and why

ABA Journal: Modern Law Library

The Third Amendment to the Constitution forbids the quartering of troops in Americans' houses. It's a reminder of how uneasy the people of the country have been about the domestic deployment of our soldiers. There are robust rules about how the military can be used on American soil, but how did those rules come about? It's a question that National Guard officer Jonathan Bratten hoped to help answer in Forging the Framework: Evolving Law, Policy, and Doctrine for the US Military's Domestic Response, which he edited and contributed to as one of the authors. "It was really cool to see the way that the roots of our processes are built into the colonial era, just as the roots of a lot of our frictions are built into the colonial era," Bratten tells Modern Law Library host Lee Rawles. Forging the Framework, which is available for free from the Army University Press, looks at how different periods of American history shaped how the military operates on American soil today. As a country that has not faced many invasions, the bulk of domestic military operations have been to respond either to civil unrest or to natural disasters. "When you look at how this affects those who serve, I just think about the number of people who got called off of the COVID-19 mission, where [you were] helping your community members to go deploy, to protect, go into support of law enforcement during the George Floyd protests," says Bratten. "There's just that weird duality that exists in the Guard and these experiences sort of ripple through." In this episode of the Modern Law Library, Bratten and Rawles dive deep into the Pullman Strike, Posse Comitatus, slave revolts, the rewards of disaster response and the difficulty of convincing militiamen to confront their rioting relatives. Kris Vallotton explores the essential nature of humility and how God uses life's trials to forge true wisdom. Through his own journey from business struggles to ministry leadership, Kris illustrates that God's idea of "blessing" often involves shaping the person rather than just the platform. This message is a call to value the truth, embrace accountability, and trust God's process even when it leads through the "crucible."

What is Forging Resilience? The Forging Resilience project from UC Berkeley School of Law's Center for Law, Energy, & the Environment seeks to “bridge the gap between climate solutions posed by experts and the on-the-ground obstacles that prevent individuals and communities from adopting those solutions.” Predicated on the idea that libraries and museums maintain a high level of trust from their communities, the project builds free toolkits for museums and libraries to encourage local, collaborative problem-solving for local environmental challenges, identifying local impacts and local solutions and resources.  How it Works Forging Resilience provides the toolkit to a host institution—either a library or museum—and community members can come out to participate in the program. The toolkits consist of several different materials including posters and banners, exhibits, conversation guides, skills-building guides, and promotional templates. The materials focus on local climate impacts, including “downscaling” work from Climate Central.  Current host partners of Forging Resilience include the Sutter County Library and Sutter County Museum, and the Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County Library System. Forging Resilience also contains a Solutions Hub, providing opportunities for individuals to reduce their contributions to carbon emissions and to understand how those emissions reductions can reduce impacts. Currently, the Solutions Hub offers guides for reducing food waste and improving insulation, with an incoming guide on installing rooftop solar.  What it Means By providing accessible and feasible pathways for citizens to make small changes to improve their climate footprint, Forging Resilience promotes the idea that climate change can be solved through collective action and community. There are over 17,000 libraries in the US.  Providing materials, including local impacts and solutions, is an on-going challenge for Forging Resilience, which has a small staff and budget. Moving forward, Forging Resilience hopes to expand their reach and grow their number of participants in order to maximize their impact.  About our Guest  Chandra L. Middleton is a Senior Research Fellow in Project Climate at the Center for Law, Energy, and Environment. Chandra's work focuses on social and cultural dimensions of climate change and environmental policy. Her current projects include Forging Resilience and renewable energy installation permitting processes. She was previously executive producer of the Climate Break podcast. This week, Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Shefali Lakhani. The two talk about the challenges and rewards of starting a law firm from scratch, the importance of building genuine relationships in business, and how Shefali is growing Lakhani Legal, a Brooklyn-based practice focused on business and IP law, by offering a comprehensive suite of services for small businesses and startups. In this episode, we discuss: How Shefali's path into firm ownership started with a traditional law firm career, but shifted after time in fintech and legal tech made it clear she wanted entrepreneurship, flexibility, and ownership of her work. What it looked like to start from scratch in New York with no clients, rebuild a network, and grow a firm by putting herself out there and talking to as many people as possible. Why adding IP to her business law practice felt like a natural fit, especially for the small businesses and startups she serves that eventually need help protecting their brand assets and intellectual property. How relationship-based business has fueled her growth—meeting attorneys, service providers, women founders, and clients without expecting anything in return, just building trust and value over time. Why Women Owned Law stands out to her because the events are more than just coffee or drinks—they include art galleries, volunteer work, and shared experiences that make networking feel genuinely fun and meaningful. Shefali Lakhani is the Founder and Managing Attorney of Lakhani Legal PLLC, a boutique business and intellectual property law firm dedicated to helping small and mid-sized businesses grow, scale, and prepare for successful exits. With a strong background in corporate, transactional, and IP law, Shefali partners with her clients to build and strengthen the legal foundation they need to thrive in competitive industries. At Lakhani Legal, Shefali advises businesses through key phases of growth and transition. As companies evolve, she provides guidance on contract drafting and negotiation, protecting intellectual property through trademark and copyright registration, and ensuring compliance in day-to-day operations. She also counsels business owners through critical milestones such as strategic partnerships, operational scaling, corporate structuring, and preparing for investment or expansion. When the time comes to transition, Shefali has experience guiding clients through mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring that their hard work translates into successful outcomes. Shefali brings not only legal expertise but also an entrepreneurial mindset. Coming from a family of business owners herself, she understands firsthand the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face. Her approach is practical, strategic, and tailored to each client's goals, whether they are growing a brand, scaling a company, or positioning for exit.
