This week, James is joined by cycling coaching guru Joe Friel. Joe started coaching amateur and elite riders in the US in the 1980s, before becoming a household name in training in 1996 as author of The Cyclist's Training Bible, arguably the most successful cycling training guide of all time and still in print today in its fifth addition. In 1999 Joe founded TrainingPeaks with son Dirk and friend Gear Fisher, the training and analysis platform that most would agree still sets the bar for digital coaching tools, used by WorldTour pros and amateurs alike. This summer, Joe released his new book High-Performance Cyclist, and here he discusses many of its themes, including how to ride slower to get faster and measuring progress with on easy metric, to the importance of sleep and eating tricks for weight loss.Joe Friel's latest book, High Performance Cyclist (Bloomsbury) is available to buy here.Interview begins at 6.07-----------------This episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. This episode is brought to you by Villa Carina Apartments in beautiful Bonaire. In this exciting episode, we sit down with Benji, the newly crowned wing foiling world champion, and Tom Hartmann, to discuss Benji's incredible rise in the sport. Broadcasting from different corners of the world, we dive into Benji's journey, the evolution of wing foiling, and the vibrant community pushing the sport to new heights. From Rookie to Champion: Benji shares his meteoric rise to the 2025 world title in his first full year on the GWA tour. Training with former world champion Chris MacDonald Jr in La Ventana, Mexico, Benji's determination and skill led to a standout performance at Gran Canaria's El Burrero, where perfect conditions and huge kickers fueled his victory.Mastering the Art of Freestyle: Benji and Tom break down the high-flying, stylish Palau combinations that dominated the tour, with Benji's clean, massive tricks—like the Palau front flip—earning top scores. Tom highlights the sport's progression, from mobes to double flips, and the push for height and power over technicality. The Gran Canaria Arena: Tom paints a vivid picture of El Burrero, a new gem on the GWA tour with consistent winds and ideal kickers. The spot's setup, with spectators close to the action on a pier, made it a perfect stage for Benji's championship-winning performance.Gear Matters: Benji credits his switch to Gong gear for its phenomenal hang time, emphasizing the critical role of equipment in competition. From wings to foils, having the right setup for conditions like Gran Canaria's 30-35 knots was key to his success.Community and Competition: Tom celebrates the growth of wing foiling, spotlighting the women's freestyle scene, led by talents like Marie, and the influx of young riders. Benji reflects on the camaraderie and rivalry with competitors like the Ajar brothers, pushing each other to go bigger.Looking Ahead: With his sights set on defending his title, Benji shares his plans to return to La Ventana in November and aim for “at least ten” championships. Tom hints at potential judging tweaks to encourage trick variety, promising an even more thrilling 2026 season.Join us for an action-packed conversation filled with insights into wing foiling's cutting edge, the thrill of competition, and the passion driving its global community. This week, Jemma and Marina are asking: what if politicians actually faced consequences? Not a cosy resignation, not a fat book deal, not a pity gig on GB News - but actual jail time. A girl can dream...Sounds like science fiction if you live in Britain, but elsewhere in the world it's apparently… a thing. In Brazil, Bolsonaro just bagged 27 years in prison for trying to cling to power - proof that karma occasionally gets out of bed. In France, Sarkozy is staring down five years for a Gaddafi-linked corruption scandal (yes, that Gaddafi - the one with the all-female bodyguard squad). And in Nepal? Gen Z set fire to Parliament and voted in a new Prime Minister while ministers literally dangled from rescue helicopters. Meanwhile here in the UK, our big act of rebellion is 100,000 plus raking to the streets to protest the exact things billionaires and think tanks told them to be mad about. Across the pond, Trump has decided Portland is a “war zone” and sent in troops - only to be met with locals posting pictures of rainbow-knitted trees, therapy llamas and burrito joints. So buckle up for another trawl through political carnage: from world leaders in courtrooms, to wannabe despots in helicopters, to Britain's unique ability to turn corruption into a career move.Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcast Patreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcast Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawl Twitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcastIf you've even mildly enjoyed The Trawl, you'll love the unfiltered, no-holds-barred extras from Jemma & Marina over on Patreon, including:• Exclusive episodes of The Trawl Goss – where Jemma and Marina spill backstage gossip, dive into their personal lives, and often forget the mic is on• Early access to The Trawl Meets…• Glorious ad-free episodesPlus, there's a bell-free community of over 3,300 legends sparking brilliant chat. And it's your way to support the pod which the ladies pour their hearts, souls (and occasional anxiety) into. In the winter of 1610 Johannes Kepler was crossing Prague's Charles Bridge when he noticed a snowflake land on his arm. Why, he asked, are all snowflakes six-cornered? "I do not believe," he wrote, "that even in a snowflake, this ordered pattern exists at random." 400 years later, we have part of the answer. Snowflakes are made of water molecules, which are made of atoms, which are made of quarks and electrons - which might be made of superstrings - all held together by forces of nature described by quantum theory. But how does such delicate beauty emerge from such abstract simplicity? Emergence is a celebration of the intricacy of the Universe and an exploration of the laws of nature that sculpted it. From the largest structures in the known Universe - the rivers and flows of galaxies that trace the cosmic web - to Earth's interlinked ecosystems and the structure of the human brain - from black holes to snowflakes - we observe a world of dazzling complexity underpinned by magnificent simplicity. How did a quarter of a million-year-old species of great apes on one small planet amongst trillions orbiting around a middle-aged star in an average galaxy figure all this out, guided by curiosity, mathematics and an aesthetic sense of symmetry and beauty? And what might we become if we can hold onto the ideas of the enlightenment so successfully developed and deployed by Kepler and his contemporaries and successors - ideas that have allowed us to begin to read the story of the Universe and carried our spacecraft to the edge of the solar system and outwards to the stars. Professor Brian Cox said: "I've loved creating Emergence - it's the most ambitious live show I've ever written. I've been very lucky to collaborate with a wonderful group of scientists, musicians, filmmakers and graphic artists to bring cosmology, biology, philosophy and history to the largest and most advanced LED screens available, with the best sound and lights I could find. I hope the show is an all-encompassing experience, and I hope it leaves everyone, whether they love science or music or history, or simply contemplating the beauty of Nature, with something new to think about." Brian has worked with a world-leading team of creatives for Emergence. Graphics and visual effects have been created in collaboration with Emmy Award winning director Nic Stacey and digital artist Erik Wernquist, and branding is by Peter Saville CBE, the renowned art director known for his original work with Factory Records. Brian has appeared in many landmark science programmes over the last 15 years, from the Peabody Award-winning Wonders of the Solar System to worldwide hit series The Planets to his most recent landmark series Solar System, which has become one of the best watched science series of the last decade. Learn why pro cyclists spend 80% of their time riding “embarrassingly easy” and how this counterintuitive approach can unlock your speed, endurance, and long-term progress. Justin Timberlake BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Timberlake has just closed out his epic two-year Forget Tomorrow World Tour and, in a move that stunned fans and shook headlines, he revealed via Instagram on July 31 that he's been privately battling Lyme disease. Rolling Stone reported Timberlake's emotional message, where he described the illness as “relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” finally shining a light on the rumors swirling about his recent “lackluster” performances and noticeable fatigue on stage. As Timberlake explained to Deadline and Collider, there was a moment during the grueling tour when he considered canceling altogether, but the joy of performing drove him to push through pain and exhaustion. Fellow NSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick posted heartfelt support on Instagram, applauding Justin's grit and noting how he went from “tough” to “next level strong,” powering through nerve pain night after night.Across social media, Timberlake's vulnerability about his diagnosis has sparked waves of empathy and discussion. His tour's challenges didn't go unnoticed online; videos captured at the Electric Castle festival in Romania went viral, showing Justin under a hooded parka, often letting backing tracks carry his vocals and encouraging the crowd to sing along, fueling memes and debates on TikTok and Twitter. Consequence Music reported fan disappointment but now, in light of his health revelation, there's a broader sense of understanding in the commentary. Timberlake remains unapologetically honest, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he chose openness over privacy to help others understand the toll Lyme disease can take.Businesswise, Timberlake's empire is healthier than ever, even if its namesake isn't. TheTradable confirmed his net worth has surged to the $350-400 million range, powered by his recent $100 million sale of his song catalog to Hipgnosis, ongoing royalties, and investments in fashion, streaming, and real estate, despite any temporary setbacks caused by health struggles. While some gossip points to speculation about Timberlake's future—will he headline the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show or pivot more to acting with the in-development Social Network sequel—these are currently rumors and unconfirmed by his camp. For now, the verified narrative centers on Justin Timberlake's resilient spirit on display after a demanding tour, his candid health updates captivating fans, and his enduring dominance across both industry headlines and social feeds.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI
Today I'm sitting down with Dr. Filip Larsen, the physiologist behind a tiny green shot that pros say helps them go harder with less burn. One preprint shows lower blood lactate at the same power after a single dose; WorldTour riders like Mads Pedersen claim they feel a real boost. But is it biology or placebo? We'll unpack the science, design a blinded test I can do on the bike, and then go way beyond the drink: overtraining, CGMs, mitochondria, and how to actually train smarter. Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography. In the past several days, Shakira has once again been at the center of major headlines for both her music and her activism. She took home the Best Latin Song award for her single Soltera at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, a significant achievement considering the fierce competition from acts like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Karol G. However, she skipped the high-profile ceremony in Elmont, New York—her absence explained by Elle as due to her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour, which saw her playing to packed venues in Guadalajara the same evening. Earlier, she was photographed electrifying fans in Mexico City on August 26. The tour remains a defining focus for Shakira as she continues with dates across Mexico, with Puebla up next and anticipation running high.Shakira's connection with the VMAs remains historic: she became the first South American artist to accept the Video Vanguard Award in 2023, joining icons like Beyoncé and Madonna. During her acceptance, she paid tribute to her two sons and her ever-loyal fanbase with a moving speech that trended widely across social media. Fans on X and Instagram have been sharing clips and shout-outs from both her tour performances and her heartfelt VMAs moments, keeping her constantly in the public eye.Looking ahead, Shakira is set to further her legacy as a global influencer and activist by headlining the 2025 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, New York, alongside The Weeknd. She affirmed in a press release, widely circulated by Global Citizen and entertainment outlets, that music is her platform to unite and promote action on urgent global issues. This festival, hosted by Hugh Jackman, aims to tackle challenges like energy access in Africa, education for children in partnership with FIFA, rainforest protection, and mobilizing New Yorkers for volunteer work. The festival's ambitious aims and Shakira's spotlight presence have ignited conversations in both music and social impact circles.Business-wise, Shakira's brand continues to dominate; her world tour is driving ticket sales and venue sell-outs, and her festival commitment positions her as both entertainer and advocate. There have been no credible reports of new business ventures or controversies within the last week—her focus appears to remain sharply on live performance and global action.Social media mentions of Shakira have spiked thanks to fan posts about her recent shows and the buzz surrounding her upcoming New York performance. While some blogs and minor outlets speculated about surprise collaborations or potential tour extensions, these remain unconfirmed at this time. Verified news centers on her award win, sold-out concerts, and the impending Global Citizen spotlight—all signs that Shakira is entering a new phase defined by both musical prominence and global advocacy.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Sweden's Mika Söderström is a rare cycling talent. A two-time Swedish Road Race Champion and multiple-time Cycling Esports National Champion, she's one of the only athletes to hold and defend both jerseys simultaneously—yet she still identifies first and foremost as an esports racer. In this episode of The Virtual Velo Podcast, Mika joins hosts Emma Martin and Chris Schwenker to share how her introduction to cycling—beginning on her father's smart trainer on Zwift—when coupled with a data-driven strategy, has carried her from the forest paths north of Stockholm to a top-ten finish at the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships and a sprint jersey at the MyWhoosh Championships. Despite these palmares, she balances elite competition with life as a Ph.D. researcher in brain wave biomedicine, where the precision of science complements the discipline of elite sport.Mika offers unique insights into the nuances between road and esports racing, from strategy and preparation to the mental and physical demands of each. She explains why, despite her road victories over some of Sweden's best Women's WorldTour pros, she feels more motivated to defend her esports national title. She also opens up about navigating weigh-ins, balancing studies with training, and why she believes the future of esports lies in embracing its own identity rather than imitating the road. And true to her competitive spirit, Mika insists that to be the best you have to beat the best—welcoming all challengers, road pros included.Join Emma and Chris for a wide-ranging conversation with one of esports' most compelling athletes, bridging intellect, versatility, and passion both on and off the bike, as Mika shares her perspective from the upper echelon of road and esports competition.Don't miss out on the unique opportunity to delve even deeper into the intriguing topics discussed in this episode.AusCycling and the Swedish Cycling Federation Crown 2024 Cycling Esports National Champions in Live Event Finals on the Same Day [Zommunique, Mar. 27, 2025]Procycling Stats: Mika SöderströmThe voice of the peloton: TCA has released its annual rider survey [Escape Collective, Sep. 2, 2025]VVN's Most Impactful People in Cycling Esports For 2025 [Zommunique, Apr 8, 2025] Statements made by guests are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of the podcast, its hosts, or its partners. Asbjørn Hellemose er tilbage i studiet. Vi sidder her på værelse 990, dagen inden det første af de to canadiske World Tour-løb, trætte men rolige. Der er ikke noget journalistisk filter over det. Ingen hårde spørgsmål, ingen overskrifter i sigte. Bare en samtale mellem to venner, dagen før det brager løs. Asbjørn tager os med ind i sin rejse. To uger i Amerika.
