In this fourth and final episode in our mini-series of Explore we look at the gravel scene. Gravel at a crossroads is partly inspired by some of the reaction to our feature on the so-called "first professional gravel race" in Veneto in episode one. Some took exception to the description, with one listener advising us that if we want to talk about gravel we should speak to some Americans! So we have. In this episode we hear from Caley Fretz, editor of Cycling Tips and "groad" pioneer, and Ian Boswell, the former World Tour pro who won Unbound, arguably the world's biggest gravel race, this year. We also speak to two riders at a crossroads in their careers: Tiffany Cromwell, who is combining Women's World Tour racing with gravel races, and Finley Newmark, a promising young rider who is turning full-time to gravel in 2022. The 2021 Ballpark Digest Awards season continues with a chat with the Savannah Bananas' Jesse Cole, winner of an Editor's Choice Award, who is single-handedly working to bring fun and a new spirit back into the increasingly staid world of baseball.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard discuss the 2021 season with the ever-energetic Cole, the Man in the Yellow Tux. In a year when the baseball world is struggling to attract younger fans and shorten games, the Savannah Bananas struck a nerve with those younger fans. Attracting capacity crowds to Savannah's Grayson Stadium and embarking on a sold-out One City World Tour, Cole and his team upend all the rules of baseball a la the Harlem Globetrotters, attracting new fans to the sport thanks to plenty of national coverage from the likes of ESPN, Boston Globe and USA Today. That success has led to an Editor's Choice Award in the 2021 Ballpark Digest AwardsSome highlights of the discussion:· Cole and his wife Emily launched the Bananas in 2016, coming to Georgia after running the Gastonia Grizzlies, formerly in the Coastal Plain League. The emphasis, they decided, would be on plenty of entertainment in the stands, with all-inclusive food and drink. After a slow start—two ticket sales in the first three months—the pair decided to go all-in on the entertainment side, a bet that paid off in a big way with sellout crowds, attracting fans from every state in the union. That led to Banana Ball, unique variations on the rules of baseball.· Flush with that success at home, the Bananas took their show on the road for the One City World Tour, resulting in two sold-out games at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Ala. That success is leading to a longer World Tour in March 2022, featuring stops at spring-training, MiLB and MLB Partner League ballparks. The pro team hits the road and plays Banana Ball (which Jesse explains); the summer-collegiate team plays by normal baseball rules and snared a 2021 Coastal Plain League championship.· Though the Bananas received plenty of mainstream media coverage, the key to the team's success means reaching fans where they are—and that means social media like TikTok, where the Bananas have 912,000 followers. What they get isn't a traditional social-media menu of game highlights and game-winning hits, but rather game highlights like infield karaoke, batters competing on stilts, and batters introducing themselves when coming up to bat. Yes, it's silly and more than a little absurdist, but it's entertaining as all heck. Anyone who hates batflips will be flummoxed; anyone who loves some flash in their baseball game will be entranced. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and the upcoming second edition of The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is editor of Ballpark Digest and founder/publisher at August Publications.

In this episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the final unveiling of the 2022 Giro d'Italia route. The Giro stages have been revealed bit by bit this time in batches, rather than chronologically. Has this robbed the Giro route of some of its mystery and majesty or does it not really matter? And what are the other terrible innovations in recent grand tour history? It's track season, cyclo-cross season and silly season. We discuss the controversy of riders taking part in events on their new team's bikes before their contracts have expired in the light of EF Education First's threat to terminate Sergio Higuita and Lawson Craddock's contracts for doing just that. We ask whether Adam Yates's Barcelona marathon time was impressive for a professional cyclist. Richard's show and tell segment discusses a new show on GCN featuring EF Education First sports director Tom Southam teaching a bunch of fourth-category riders how to ride as a team, and we hear from Southam himself. And in the final part we speak to Tony Hoffa, a Friend of the Podcast who has recently secured a job in the World Tour with Team DSM as a mechanic – a move which came about after he listened to our Friends of the Podcast special episode A Team Apart. FOLLOW UP: ENVISION SCALES BACK OUTPUT PREDICTIONEnvision, the Chinese company partnering with Renault on their battery factory, in Northern France, has lowered the predicted production output due to a change in the site's layout. Only time will tell, but what we can say is this small SUV is very much a car for now. Due to it's size it will not threaten other road uses, as do larger vehicles, but still give an elevated driving position. It will come with a 1.0 petrol engine, without any electrification, giving 71hp, 69lb ft of torque and 107g/km of CO2. To find out more, click the Autocar article here. Oh, one more thing, apparently, there could be a GR version too. Now THAT makes it the most Alan car. To see more about that, click the here for the Autocar article. Ora Car EVThe Ora Cat is a Chinese offering, due to be on sale from December, with a starting price of £25,000. This supermini sized EV will have a range of 261 miles, via a 63 kWh battery pack, for the top of the range. The base model will have a 53 kWh pack capable of 209 miles. The company, a brand of Great Wall Motors, has high hopes for their range. To find out more, click the Autocar article here. LUNCHTIME WATCH: BRINGING CAR HEAVEN TO MANCHESTER The Late Brake Show was continuing their World Tour of stadiums (this may be a slight over exaggeration), this time in Manchester. Andrew actually went and interacted with real people and cars. You can get a glimpse of how much of a wonderful event it really was by watching their round up video, by clicking this link here. LIST OF THE WEEK: 1996's BEST CARS NOW IN THE USThanks to the US's odd import rules, our friends over the pond have to wait many years before they can get their hands on stuff we've had and discarded. Here is a list, from Motoring Research, of the best of what they could now get from 1996. As ever, don't forget to tell the chaps your choice and if you agree with their selections. AND FINALLY: SUNG KANG'S RALLY-SPEC DATSUN 240ZSung Kang, famous for The Fast and Furious franchise movies, has built his own tribute to the 50th anniversary of the East African Safari Rally winning car. And we want it. Like now, please. This is better than a tarted up Juke, that is for sure. To gaze on and lust, click the Top Gear link here.

Ciaran O'Grady is a World Tour trainer and personal cycling coach who recently just completed his Ph.D! He is also the fiance of our wonderful host, Freya. This episode was recorded right after Paris Roubaix Femmes so we recapped that along with discussing the inner workings of world tour training and the business side of bikes. We also, for some reason, discussed Linkin Park's relevance in the music world???? Fortunately, from there we were able to get things back under control before it was too late. Enjoy!

I mean I know Houston has it's share of problems right now with women's rights or lack thereof and vaccine mandate's or lack thereof and now Travis Scott's sacrificial world tours first stop was in his home town of Houston Texas and it seems to be hitting a city near you, but will you go? In this Episode I share a quick thought from a Christian gals perspective, not a religious perspective because that usually gets in the way of logic. It's short but sweet....Please

In this episode, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss some of the latest stories from the world of professional cycling. After saving the team at the last minute a year ago, is this the end of the road for the Qhubeka-NextHash World Tour team? What's behind the latest shake-up at Movistar, and does Tiesj Benoot really want out of Team DSM? And if he leaves, where might he end up? In part two, we discuss Ineos Grenadiers. Geraint Thomas appears to be staying for another year, there are changes in the coaching and management department with Tim Kerrison leaving after 12 years and Roger Hammond considering an offer to join. And could one of the team's brightest young stars be lured away by another team? Finally, we discuss two doping stories. Plus, which men's World Tour rider had the most race days in 2021 – and how far towards the moon would that have taken him? Alexey Vermeulen began his career racing on the WorldTour circuit for Jumbo Visma. After falling out of love with the road scene, he decided to transition to gravel and mountain bike racing in 2018. Since then, his results have included second and first place finishes at the Iceman Cometh in consecutive years, and third at Belgian Waffle Ride. In this conversation, he talks about his decision to change the trajectory of his career early on, and the steep learning curve of switching from road racing, which he had been chasing since he was a teenager, to the relatively unknown quantity of mountain biking. He also talks why 2020 was a good year for privateer cyclists, and the video series he created with Ryan Petry for Outside, in which they selected three amateur riders to train and prepare for the Leadville 100.
