Before the start of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Lausanne, Kate Courtney sat down with Abby and Loren to talk about her move to the WorldTour with FDJ United-Suez, how her first road races went, and why she values building her personal brand.
Marc Graveline is an aerodynamics consultant who works with WorldTour cycling teams as well as professional (e.g. Chelsea Sodaro, Lionel Sanders) and amateur triathletes, and road and gravel cyclists. He co-developed the Notio Konect, the first consumer on-bike aero sensor, and now develops his own device, the Gizmo. He also led the testing programme behind IRONMAN's decision to move the professional draft zone from 12 to 20 metres. We cover how to run an aero test you can actually trust, what to test and in what order, tyres and tyre pressure, and what IRONMAN's draft-zone testing actually found. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Why Marc disagrees with the idea that we have reached peak aero, and where he still sees the largest untapped gains across road racing, triathlon and gravel. Wind tunnel, velodrome or road: what each venue is good for, why he validates everything on the road, and where an age grouper without an unlimited budget should start. Building a road test you can trust: choosing a venue, how long an out-and-back should be, how many repeats, the ABBA protocol, and the single mistake that ruins more test sessions than anything else. The hierarchy of what to test, from position down to hydration, and where the biggest gains will come from. Why head position drives so much of the result, and why the change you make to your position is often not the thing that actually makes you faster. Helmets and skinsuits: which two helmets kept finishing first and second when 21 age groupers worked through a dozen of them at an aero camp, how heat and visibility should be weighed against the CdA number, and how much a custom skinsuit really buys you over one off the shelf. Tyres: what WorldTour riders on good roads are actually running for pressure, why erring on one side costs you more than the other, whether wider really is faster, and why a tyre that wins in the wind tunnel can still be the wrong choice for your race. The IRONMAN draft-zone testing: the stacking effect that showed up at 12 metres, what changed at 20, what those charts with no y-axis were actually trying to say, and the call to Magnus Ditlev's aerodynamicist that confirmed it in the real world. What does nutrition really look like behind the scenes of professional cycling? In this episode of the Find Your Edge Podcast, Coach Chris Newport talks with sports dietitian, former professional cyclist, and EF Pro Cycling nutritionist Kristen Arnold, MS, RDN, CSSD.Kristen takes us inside the world of professional cycling nutrition—from morning hydration checks and chef-prepared meals to feed zones, heat protocols, gut training, and individualized carbohydrate testing. We cover:• Why nutrition has become such an important part of cycling performance• What a sports dietitian actually does during a professional stage race• Why simply eating more carbohydrates isn't the whole story• How gut training can improve an athlete's ability to tolerate race fueling• Why nutrition needs change with heat, intensity, and course demands• The challenges of getting nutrition to riders during a race• Why health and performance need to work together—not compete with each other• What everyday cyclists, runners, and triathletes can learn from the prosYou don't need a World Tour nutrition team to fuel better. But you do need a strategy that works for your body, your training, and your goals.*Kristen notes that cycling oxidation rates can be 75-160g per hour (not 170g)Learn more about Kristen Arnold here: https://www.sportsnutritionforwomen.comLearn more about metabolic and sweat testing at The Endurance Edge to personalize your fueling and hydration needs: https://www.theenduranceedge.com/sweat-and-metabolic-vo2max-testing/Ready to make a season's worth of progress in just one day? Pain shows up late. By the time you feel it, the process has usually been running for months. In this Expert Series episode we sit down with Martin Kumm, a sports chiropractor who has spent the past five years with WorldTour cycling team EF Education-EasyPost, alongside years working in ice hockey and track and field. He is a lifelong athlete himself, from national level basketball to triathlon to cycling. We go through the questions athletes ask us over and over. Does a warm up actually prevent injury, and how long should it be? Should you stretch, or are you someone who should not? Is a cool down worth the time? How much strength training do you really need, and what happens to it during a three week race? Are magnesium and creatine worth the money? And now that the research has shifted, is the cold plunge still doing anything for you?Martin also explains why he can tell whether a professional cyclist played other sports as a child just by asking them to stand on one foot, and why plantar fasciitis you feel in your heel often starts in your toes.If you coach, his closing answer may change how you plan your season. Stop trying to prevent injuries and start building a robust athlete.

James Moran is Head of Nutrition at Uno-X Mobility, joining the team in December 2019 as a consultant when they were still a Conti squad, before building the entire nutrition program from the ground up as they turned WorldTour. What began with just a list of riders and no instructions beyond "teach them about nutrition," has grown into three full-time chefs and nutritionists across the men's and women's programs. He works closely with nutrition partner Mauten on carbohydrate absorption research and oral microbiome testing, and was central to Jonas Abrahamsen's transformation from 68kg to 78kg - one of the team's biggest nutrition success stories. Before cycling, James worked in track cycling with British Cycling, and has also consulted across boxing, tennis, and rugby.

Last weekend, Lollapalooza rolled into my front yard in Chicago, and in this Series, I'll be featuring the interviews I did with a handful of amazing artists playing this giant festival. For this Part 1, I was especially psyched to mark the occasion by first sitting down with my friend, the amazing and inspiring Goldie Boutilier, who's making her third appearance on the show.Since Goldie's last interview for Roadcase in December 2024, she has been absolutely crushing it and I couldn't be happier about her accomplishments. She was recently nominated for a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, made her TV debut on the Kelly Clarkson Show, opened for Katy Perry on the European leg of her World Tour late last year, and also had her song “King of Possibilities” featured as the theme song for the Netflix Series “The Hunting Wives.” These are major accomplishments by any measure, but when you understand Goldie's life story, her continual rise becomes even more impressive.Goldie talks to me about her constant evolution and transformation from a dreamer to a doer, the impact of being a role model for her fans, how owning her trauma and seeing herself in others has made her feel less alone, and we explore how her overcoming doubt and fear to conquer new challenges has made her even stronger. Goldie's inspiring story is one of survival, resilience, grit, determination and self-belief — and I'm proud to have her on the show once again!! You can click on the link in the bio to find it. It's a very special conversation and I cannot wait for you to give it a listen. =======================================Chapters:00:00 - Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg03:55 - Introducing Goldie's inspiring story04:46 - Redefining manifestation through perseverance and resilience05:38 - How two years transformed Goldie's perception of time and achievement06:37 - The practicality behind fashion and persona as part of her healing journey07:38 - Reflecting on her industry milestones: opening for Katy Perry and TV debut09:17 - The evolution from revenge pop to resilient and healing pop music10:51 - The significance of her past struggles and how they inform her artistry11:46 - Connecting with fans through vulnerability and shared trauma13:18 - Using storytelling to impact others and promote healing14:57 - The importance of authenticity versus appearance—navigating fashion and art15:39 - How her persona layers with her genuine self, creating a multi-dimensional artist17:35 - The power of venues like the Troubadour and meaningful fan interactions19:17 - Sharing her long road of recovery and triumph over past hardships21:46 - The role of community and shared experience in her music's reach23:20 - The impact of landmark achievements like opening for major artists and licensing success24:46 - Overcoming doubt and celebrating her success with awards and recognition26:10 - The importance of expressing gratitude to supporting family and community26:48 - Her upcoming album "The Godmother" and its themes of maternal care and spiritual resilience28:42 - The healing power of dance and upbeat music in her new projects29:50 - Reflecting on her alter ego Goldie Montana as a symbol of bravery and transformation31:59 - The extraordinary impact of her song on "The Hunting Wives"33:10 - Experiences touring with Katy Perry and lessons learned from the interaction36:00 - Navigating the challenge of connecting with fans and managing DMs37:31 - The significance of the Troubadour show and its emotional resonance39:06 - The comfort of community and shared understanding with her audience39:56 - Embracing authenticity and the journey from hardship to rainbow-colored resilience41:06 - Episode Wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg=======================================For more information on Goldie and tour dates: https://www.goldieenterprises.com/=======================================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Protests against undocumented migrants have been going on for months in South Africa. We've talked about them on the podcast before - people are protesting against illegal immigrants, and some of the marches have turned violent and deadly. Houses have been burned down, shops looted, and countries like Ghana and Nigeria have even evacuated some of their citizens from the country. But these protests aren't just affecting politics and South Africa's relationships with other countries on the continent. They're also impacting sports and pop culture. Now, Tyla, the South African pop star, has taken Nigeria off her world tour dates. She hasn't given a reason, but thousands of Nigerians had signed a petition urging her to stay away.So that's what we're getting into today with Makuochi Okafor, our West Africa Reporter. We also hear from a top agent and team bosses about why WorldTour outfits are now recruiting riders in their mid-teens, in their desperate search for the next Seixas. Décathlon fought off stiff competition to lock him in when he was just 14 – but now that they have him, why are the French team still having to work hard to rein him in? Their head sports director, Luke Rowe, tells us.

Fourteen years after launch, Subway Surfers is still one of the biggest games in the world. In this episode, Kalie Moore sits down with Mathias Gredal Nørvig, CEO of SYBO, to unpack how a mobile game launched in 2012 continues to attract between 100 and 150 million monthly players while nearly every other hit from its era has faded away. They explore the philosophy behind Subway Surfers' iconic World Tour live operations, why empowering artists and designers has kept the game feeling fresh for more than a decade, how community ideas have directly shaped new characters and game modes, and why collaborations with games like Brawl Stars have become some of the studio's most successful partnerships. Mathias also shares how Subway Surfers Cities evolved from years of experimentation, why SYBO deliberately avoided cannibalizing its flagship title, and what they're still learning as they build the franchise's next chapter. The conversation also dives into one of gaming's most remarkable organic marketing stories: how Subway Surfers became one of TikTok's biggest gaming phenomena without spending on user acquisition, why SYBO gives its social team extraordinary creative freedom, and how the studio thinks about virality, platform expansion, and community-first marketing. Mathias shares SYBO's measured approach to AI, lessons from becoming part of Miniclip and Tencent, why the company stepped back from large-scale licensing despite nearly five billion downloads, and how sustainability, accessibility, and healthy gameplay have become core parts of the studio's long-term vision. The episode offers a rare look inside one of mobile gaming's most enduring success stories and what it takes to build an evergreen franchise that continues to evolve without losing what made it special. We'd also like to thank Heroic Labs for making this episode possible! This week, with the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on the horizon, Abby, Loren, Gracie, and Georgie draft their own teams for the nine-day race. But first, they talk about the Baloise Ladies Tour and Kate Courtney's introduction to road racing with the top team in the WorldTour. A disclaimer: the finalized rosters for the Tour are not out, so the draft is based on assumptions. Adjustments will be made once the final start list is released.
Dane Cash and Cosmo Catalano break down all the action from stage 15 of the Tour de France.
China's turbocharged growth may have made it rich, but now it has to deal with rich country problems. High-speed trains that connect every town. Gleaming new bridges and skyscrapers. An apartment (or two) for every family. No country on Earth has seen the kind of economic growth that China has over the last 50 years. China has become the factory to the world, a grand experiment in central government planning mixed with personal ambition. It was all enabled by what our guide for today calls, an engineering state, a central planning mindset where leaders believe they can engineer their way out of economic problems. And problems are mounting. Today on the show, the perils of prosperity and the despair of success as China deals with overbuilding. We'll travel back to China's free-wheeling boom-era of the early 2000s and hang out with a property developer who amassed his wealth at the center of the action – private jet rides, thousand-dollar fish soup, casual bribes. Then, as the economy slows, we ask what can we learn from the despair of success. Does rising youth unemployment signal a less prosperous future? With young people struggling to find white-collar jobs, some of them are opting out of work altogether. Come along as we travel the world in search of the best economic ideas to bring home! From the beaches of Barbuda to the fjords of Norway, there's money (and money problems) everywhere. For this summer travel season, Planet Money Summer School will take you on a world tour for your ears. Pack that sense of wonder and nose for adventure, this is our semester abroad. We're going to explore exotic locales and discover cultural norms, but we're also going to buckle down and learn the biggest economic lessons around the world from our guides. We start as far away as you can get from Planet Money headquarters, New Zealand and Australia. We'll visit a sheep farm to observe an innovative but controversial market for the most important substance on earth, and we'll ask when do speculators help and when do they hurt the rest of us? Then, we'll get to know the economist – and jazz musician – who changed how the entire world fights inflation when he released a secret number to tame the dreaded wild beast. How did that work? Spoiler: it was the great leap forward in economic mind tricks.Featured Episodes:Liquid Markets (2021)The Secret Target (2018)Featured Terms:Multiple equilibriaInflation targetingSpeculators (impact on liquidity)Support:Planet Money+Read: Our book: Planet Money: A Guide to the Economic Forces That Shape Your Life (Audiobook here) Our weekly longform Planet Money newsletterOur weekly Indicator link round-up newsletterFollow: InstagramTikTokYouTubeFacebookThis episode of Planet Money Summer School is hosted by Robert Smith.
