Toxic pollution kills 12.6 million people every year—nearlyone-quarter of all global deaths – and 92% of these deaths occur in middle or low-income countries. Yet despite its deadliness, environmental harms are oftena slow-moving and long-standing problem, which can be difficult to detect and thus “invisible” in some ways which result in inaction and complacency. So what can be done? In her book “Slow Harms and Citizen Action: Environmental Degradation and Policy Change in Latin American Cities”, Professor Veronica Herrera asks: When and how do people mobilize around slow harms? By examining the cases of Buenos Aires, Bogotá and Lima, the book looks at how citizen movements can push the state to implement environmental rights protections, and how ideas about pollution as a policy problem become institutionalized. This episode was hosted by Sebastián Solarte. Sebastián is a PhD Candidate at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. In his research, he uses a political ecology lens to study grassroots movements aiming to overcome energy poverty in rural Colombia. Beyond his work, he is passionate about exploring places with his bicycle and finding new food spots.Veronica Herrera, our guest, is an Associate Professor ofUrban Planning and Political Science in the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles. I study the political economy of development and environmental politics and policy, with a focus on cities, civil society, and Latin America.
It's feared more Clare people will become homeless on foot of a change to Government policy. The tenant in-situ scheme, where councils can buy a property and continue renting it out to someone who's received a notice to quit, will now only apply to households who've been on social housing support payments for at least two years. Clare County Council says the majority of the 300 households it's supported after receiving termination notices so far would still meet these conditions. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle, who's a member of Clare's Housing Committee believes, however a sizeable minority will be affected.

Starbucks's decision to restrict its restrooms to paying customers has flushed out a wider problem: a patchwork of restroom policies that has left Americans confused and divided over who gets to use the loo and when. Rules about restroom access in restaurants vary by state, city and county. New York requires restroom access for customers at food establishments with 20 or more seats. California requires larger restaurants to provide restrooms for customers and guests, but only if they were built after 1984. In Chicago, restaurants don't need to have restrooms for customers unless they serve liquor. "It's so mishmash," said Steven Soifer, the co-founder and treasurer of the American Restroom Association, which advocates for clean, safe and well-designed public toilets. "If (a retailer) is serving food and drink, it's a health hazard if there isn't a public bathroom." Starbucks opened the can, so to speak, when it said it was reversing a seven-year-old policy that invited anyone to hang out in its stores or use the restroom, regardless of whether they bought anything. Starbucks's new code of conduct, which will be posted in all company-owned North American stores, also bans discrimination or harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use and asking strangers for money. Reaction to the coffee chain's rule change for potty privileges was heated and divided. Many said Starbucks had the right to restrict restroom access to paying customers. "I do think it's up to Starbucks to set the atmosphere in their stores," Paul Skinner, 76, a retired firefighter in Daytona Beach, Florida, told The Associated Press. "If they've decided that their paying customers are going to be better served by limiting restroom access, it doesn't make me mad. I'm not going to stop going there." But Skinner said he also doesn't mind when homeless people occasionally visit his local Starbucks, and he sometimes offers to buy them breakfast. "I think about all the people who don't have housing who would love to wander into a Starbucks and get warm," he said. "Now there's one more place they aren't welcome." Send us a textGrowing up in a working-poor family, State Representative Joe Miller (OH-53) brings a gritty, firsthand perspective to the table that challenges the status quo. Our discussion weaves through Joe's life experiences and combines them with insights from Matthew Desmond's "Poverty by America" to expose the harsh realities of poverty and the systems that cement it. Together, we question the efficacy of political campaign spending and school voucher programs, and how they might unintentionally deepen the chasms of inequality they aim to bridge. The conversation pivots to the overpowering economic influence in politics, unpacking the staggering sums funneled into political advertising and the media's role in shaping public opinion. We reflect on how the middle class, once the backbone of democracy, has been increasingly sidelined by a wealth gap that grows ever wider. The notion that addressing this wealth gap is a provocative one, challenging the priorities of today's billionaires as well as the affluent, and their potential impact on democracy. Our dialogue culminates in a critical examination of education funding and the role of billionaires in government. As an educator, Joe shares poignant stories of hungry students whose potential is stifled not by ability, but by basic unmet needs. We critique the school voucher system's unintended consequences of increasing segregation and undermining public education. Finally, we underscore the urgency of separating wealth from government to preserve the democratic ideals upon which our society is built.
