Filling The Deficit Of Mentoring In Your Life w/ Ken Blanchard & Claire Diaz-Ortiz

Mentors. Chances are slim you have someone who really fills the role. These days people will tend to cite their favorite authors and philosophers and influences as their mentors. And to that degree, I'd say that almost everyone in my life “mentors” me, as I learn from everyone. But I really define a mentor as someone who literally knows you and is invested in helping guide you. We used to have this in families where we lived in a village and closely amongst family and friends. We had grandparents, aunts and uncles and even neighbors who were truly involved in our lives. Today, we are isolated. A few years ago I sat down with Ken Blanchard, famous business and personal leader. Ken authored The One Minute Manager which is a business classic and has sold more than 15 million copies. But this conversation wasn't about management. It was about mentoring. Ken became the mentor for Claire Diaz-Ortiz, who is an author, speaker and innovation advisor who was an early employee at Twitter. She was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company and called “The Woman Who Got the Pope on Twitter.” Clair  is an award-winning author of eight books that have been published in more than a dozen countries. But the story here is Ken became a mentor to Claire, and together they co-authored a book titled, One Minute Mentoring: How to Find and Work With a Mentor - and Why You'll Benefit from Being One. Ken asked Claire to do this book with him because he not only personally mentors her, but she in turn mentors him in regards to the younger generation. It makes an incredibly valuable perspective on the need, value and opportunity of mentoring. I bring this back because at the age of 53, I found a true mentor in my life, and it has been transformational.  My core devotion is to finding deep fulfillment in life, and helping others find find it as well. When I'm not on this microphone I'm working with people as a life coach and often applying what fulfills them into their work and business. Previously he spent 2 years as North America President and CCO of Ogilvy, where he helped bring the agency and its clients a new level of relevance. He brought Workday to the Super Bowl, led the team that brought in the Verizon account, and one of the biggest Super Bowl campaigns ever, “Can't B Broken,” featuring Beyonce, and created the most celebrated Super Bowl campaign of 2024, the social & influencer lead "Michael CeraVe," for CeraVe. Chris and his teams have won every award for creativity and effectiveness many times over. He has been included in ADWEEK Best Creatives, the ADWEEK 100, and Business Insider's Most Creative People in Advertising. Notes: Cold Emails: Be specific in your praise and specific in your ask. The lame "Can I pick your brain" type emails get deleted and ignored because they aren't specific. You never need permission to take responsibility. Chris learned this from Ed Catmull's book Creativity Inc.… And he's embodied this his entire career. The people who build huge careers take ownership of their own and regularly solve problems and improve their clients' and colleagues' lives. Chris has done this since his early days as an intern. At any level taking on responsibility yourself, unasked, makes you stand out. Competence combined with insane follow-through. For some clients, it takes 50 ideas to get to the one that will work. Creating a culture where the team can share all of their bad ideas safely to get to the one great one. The creative process: Brain dump everything. Purge your brain of everything it has. When you think you're done, you're not. There's more. You have to get it all out. "A lot of creative people aren't fully aware of the process or the structure, they just feel it (Rick Rubin). "When you can see it lift off the page, you feel a sense of mastery over it." Chris's first Super Bowl commercial -- Emerald Nuts. He won it because he was both funny and added the fact that the product provided energy. Most people only covered one part, Chris did both. Push your edges - Chris is like Lionel Messi. He's always walking around in the office, asking questions, looking for ideas, being curious. Then he sees an opportunity and goes for it 100%. Chris has a standing reservation every week at the same restaurant where he meets with a mentor, mentee, or peer to deepen the important relationships in his life. That would be a good idea for us all to do. Chris was pen-pals with Dave Matthews for 8 years.  Chris saw that they recorded at Bearsville studios and wrote a letter to Dave there. He also said, "Show up with gifts." He gave Dave a Beatles Bootlegged album. A leader takes what comes and then turns it into an opportunity. The formula is Competence + Insane Follow-Through. How to build relationships: Meet with people in person. Get drunk with them. Do hard work with them. Go through something bad with them. Laugh with them. I got hired from my internship by cold calling Mark Cuban to get him to approve of using his name in an ad. The best ideas are often bad in their first moments, or massively wrong, and then someone flips it or unlocks it. You have to stay on things and play around. I made my first ad by going through a garbage can to learn how to write a script and sending a bunch of Budweiser scripts to my boss. The art of finding an idea on the edge of possible, and the value of going over your skis when on the cusp of greatness - having a stomach for it. I've told a lie to keep things moving on every great campaign I was part of. I learned the best lesson in leadership when we lost our biggest account (Accenture).  I put Danny Meyer's mentality into practice, and we took that moment to put the business and clients second and play for each other. Culture carried us. Culture is built by the stories we tell and the behaviors we highlight.

Named "Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business" and "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum, Miki shares her evolution from a hard-charging entrepreneur to an advocate of "soft power" leadership. Her latest venture, Hiro Technologies, exemplifies this approach by partnering with nature to solve the global plastic crisis through breakthrough fungi technology. Beyond her business accomplishments, she's a devoted mother, musician, and thought leader in the space of authentic leadership and emotional intelligence.Key Topics and Takeaways:How five nights in complete darkness revealed the mechanics of our emotional patterns and thought loopsWhy "soft power" might be the leadership paradigm our world desperately needs right nowThe remarkable experience of watching yourself cry and finding joy in feeling everythingThe difference between leadership and mastery (and why understanding this changes everything)How prayer and gratitude can transform our relationship with uncertaintyWhy moving at the "perfect pace" means something different than what most people thinkThe profound shift from being a leader on a pedestal to being a guide on the pathHow vulnerability and power aren't opposites - they're partners in authentic leadershipThe way our souls might have chosen this human experience specifically to feel it allWhy feeling insecure might be one of the most secure things we can doThis conversation reminds us that true aliveness isn't found in avoiding the dark or chasing only the light - it's found in embracing every shade of the human experience. As Miki beautifully puts it, "I want to skid to death's door sideways, not in a well-preserved body, thoroughly used up, loudly proclaiming, wow, what a life!" The invitation is clear: what if instead of managing our emotions, we let them be our teachers? What if instead of fearing our vulnerability, we let it be our strength? In 2019, women earn .79 cents for every dollar a man makes. Though we can attribute the gender pay gap to several factors including occupational segregation, bias against working mothers, and circumstances like racial bias, disability, and access to education, there's no denying numbers and that we still have a lot of work to do to create an even playing field. On today's episode, I am thrilled to have a woman and mother who has been an advocate for closing the gender gap throughout her career. Reshma Saujani is the Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, the international nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in tech and change the image of what a computer programmer looks like and does. It has reached 185,000 girls in all 50 states, Canada, and the UK. In 2019, Girls Who Code was awarded Most Innovative Non-Profit by Fast Company. Reshma is the author of the international bestseller Brave, Not Perfect and has a podcast with the same name and the New York Times bestseller Girls Who Code: Learn to Code and Change the World. Reshma's TED talk, “Teach girls, bravery not perfection,” has more than four million views and has sparked a worldwide conversation about how we're raising our girls. She began her career as an attorney and activist. In 2010, she surged onto the political scene as the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. During the race, she visited local schools and saw the gender gap in computing classes firsthand, which led her to start Girls Who Code. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and Yale Law. Her work on behalf of young women has earned her broad recognition on lists including: Fortune World's Greatest Leaders; Fortune 40 Under 40; WSJ Magazine Innovator of the Year; Forbes Most Powerful Women Changing the World; and Fast Company 100 Most Creative People, among others. When Rachel launched STORY in 2011 she did so with the belief that retail held the potential to be about more than the transaction - it could serve as a channel for branded, community-based storytelling – retail media. STORY offered the point of a magazine, changed like a gallery, and sold things like a store. After seven years and 44 different ‘themes', in April 2018, Rachel sold STORY to Macy's Inc. where she served as Brand Experience Officer until July 2020. FUTURE FOSSILS

This week we speak to multidisciplinary independent researcher William Sarill, whose life has traced a high-dimensional curve through biochemistry, art restoration, physics, and esotericism (and I'm stopping the list here but it goes on). Bill is one of the only people I know who has the scientific chops to understand and explain how to possibly unify thermodynamics with general relativity AND has gone swimming into the deep end of The Weird for long enough to develop an appreciation for its paradoxical profundities. He can also boast personal friendships with two of the greatest (and somewhat diametrically opposed) science fiction authors ever: Phil Dick and Isaac Asimov. In this conversation we start by exploring some of his discoveries and insights as an intuition-guided laboratory biomedical researcher and follow the river upstream into his synthesis of emerging theoretical frameworks that might make sense of PKD's legendary VALIS experiences — the encounter with high strangeness that drove him to write The Exegesis, over a million words of effort to explain the deep structure of time and reality. I'm so excited to share this special 20 min episode stack as a highlight with a powerful message. I'm publishing this curation to help you make the most of your time. The episode features segments from the episode 017, 018, & 019 featuring Susan Cain and the following Aftercast & Solocast. https://richie.libsyn.com/susan-cain-quiet-the-power-of-introverts-in-a-world-that-cant-stop-talking ====== Introversion is not shyness. You can be a shy extrovert or an introvert who is not shy. "Don't think of introversion as something that needs to be cured." What about the Western Extroversion Ideal? The omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight” has pitfalls. What about extroverts who claim to be introverts? Discover the power of Quiet personally, professionally and in parenting.   Erase from your vocabulary, "Now, I want to be someone else" and discover the power of quiet. Includes strategies for parents, children, teachers, in the office, at home and personally. What about introverted parenting? What if you have children with two kinds of children (introvert, extrovert)?    How do you best parent them with the chill time or attention needed? Clue: Don't overprotect them, honor who they are. As Susan Cain says on this podcast, "Introverted kids have a longer runway that they have to travel before they take off and fly...you want to be with them on that runway...and they need to know from you that you really love who they are on that runway with them."   Get ready to spend your time the way you like and not the way you think you're 'supposed to.' Stop denying your own reality of how you want to spend your time and step into your True North of what you'd like to be doing if you could.   Richie Norton interviews Susan Cain author of the bestsellers Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts, and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in A World That Can't Stop Talking, which has been translated into 40 languages, is in its seventh year on the New York Times best seller list, and was named the #1 best book of the year by Fast Company magazine, which also named Cain one of its Most Creative People in Business. Her record-smashing TED talk has been viewed over 30 million times on TED and YouTube combined, and was named by Bill Gates one of his all-time favorite talks.    LinkedIn named Susan the 6th Top Influencer in the world. Susan has partnered with Malcolm Gladwell, Adam Grant and Dan Pink to launch the Next Big Idea Book Club; they donate all their proceeds to children's literacy programs. Her writing has appeared in the The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Cain has also spoken at Microsoft, Google, the U.S. Treasury, the S.E.C., Harvard, Yale, West Point and the US Naval Academy. She received Harvard Law School's Celebration Award for Thought Leadership, the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel Award for Communication and Leadership, and was named one of the world's top 50 Leadership and Management Experts by Inc. Magazine. She is an honors graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School. She lives in the Hudson River Valley with her husband and two sons.    This powerful podcast will help you personally, professionally and in your relationships regardless of whether you lean introvert or extrovert. An instant classic in applicable learning for greater life improvement, happiness and productivity with quiet power. 'Second Hand Smoke' his new album (released Sept 13 2024) is a deeply personal and refreshingly unique album that explores themes rarely addressed in mainstream music, like sobriety, aging, meditation, and the complexities of modern relationships. Josh Tetrick on the Future of the Cultivated Meat Movement

If you listened to the last episode, you already know that there's an updated paperback edition of my book Clean Meat that's coming out April 9, 2024. I announced in that episode that, aligning with that release, this show will be devoted for a couple months exclusively to interviews with leaders in the cultivated meat space, many of whom are profiled in the book.  And there's perhaps no person in the cultivated meat sector who's generated more headlines than Josh Tetrick, CEO of both Eat Just and Good Meat. Along with people like Mark Post and Uma Valeti, both of whom will also be guests in this podcast series, Josh was one of the first entrepreneurs to devote resources to trying to commercialize cultivated meat. And his company, Good Meat, indeed was the first company ever to win regulatory approval anywhere—in Singapore—and start selling real meat grown without animal cells.  In the new paperback edition of Clean Meat I detail the process of that Singaporean regulatory approval and the world's first historic cultivated meat sale. And while Good Meat has gone on to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in venture capital and garner US regulatory approval as well, the company admittedly hasn't yet achieved the goals it set out for itself in the early days.  In the recent New York Times obituary for cultivated meat, the author Joe Fassler writes, “The book ‘Clean Meat' describes Mr. Tetrick looking at factory drawings and saying, ‘By 2025, we'll build the first of these facilities,' and by 2030, ‘we're the world's largest meat company.'” Today, in 2024, Good Meat no longer has an aspiration of a 2025 major cultivated meat plant, and the idea of being the world's largest meat company by 2030 seems relatively  unlikely. But as you'll hear in this interview, Josh Tetrick remains cautiously optimistic about a future for the cultivated meat industry, despite negative headlines that are, at least for the time being, dampening some investors' enthusiasm for the space. In this episode, Josh and I have a frank discussion about the cultivated meat sector, how it may be able to scale, what the economics could look like, whether Josh thinks it's realistic to make a dent in total animal meat demand, and more.  Long-time listeners of the show will remember that Josh also was a guest on this podcast way back in 2019 on Episode 23. In that conversation, we discussed how he remains resilient in the face of adversity. I recommend going back and listening to that inspirational episode for sure, and I'm glad to have Josh back on the show to offer his point of view of where things stand in the movement to divorce meat production from animal slaughter today. Discussed in this episode Josh recommends reading Thinking, Fast and Slow. Our 2019 episode with Josh, Episode 23. A 2013 Washington Post obituary for electric cars.  More about Josh Tetrick Josh Tetrick is CEO & co-founder of Eat Just, Inc., a food technology company with a mission to build a healthier, safer and more sustainable food system in our lifetimes.  The company's expertise, from functionalizing plant proteins to culturing animal cells, is powered by a world-class team of scientists and chefs spanning more than a dozen research disciplines. Eat Just created one of America's fastest-growing egg brands, which is made entirely of plants, and the world's first-to-market meat made from animal cells instead of slaughtered livestock.  Prior to founding Eat Just, Tetrick led a United Nations business initiative in Kenya and worked for both former President Clinton and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. As a Fulbright Scholar, Tetrick taught schoolchildren in Nigeria and South Africa and is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Michigan Law School.  Tetrick has been named one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People in Business,” Inc.'s “35 Under 35” and Fortune's “40 Under 40.” Eat Just has been recognized as one of Fast Company's “Most Innovative Companies,” Entrepreneur's “100 Brilliant Companies,” CNBC's “Disruptor 50” and a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.
