It's a record year in Phoenix when it comes to the heat. But it's always been hot here: Phoenix is considered to be the nation's hottest city — but even now the early mornings and late nights cannot always guarantee a break from high temperatures. Yet despite it all, Arizonans live their lives here. They go to work, they walk their dog, they see their friends. They survive in the heat day after day. For most, salvation comes from a jump in the pool or time spent in the air conditioning, but everyone here is influenced by the heat in their daily lives. This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we sit down with three Arizona Republic reporters who worked on One Week in the Heat. Lane Sainty, Ray Stern and Daniel Gonzalez join the show to discuss what they learned talking with doctors, the elderly, the unhoused and more for a real look at what it takes to live in the Phoenix sun. CHECK YOUR ENROLMENT (Unless you're awful) Lane Sainty (Buzzfeed) wants to cut the postal survey crap and get a more general vote on just whatever gay people might be up to today.
It’s another bonus mini episode, brought to you by the irrepressible Mark Di Stefano and the less good version of Alice Workman, Lane Sainty. A week is a long time in politics, and in the past seven days we’ve seen not one, but TWO Greens senators resign after the shock discovery that they’re actually dual citizens. In other news, Malcolm Turnbull handed Peter Dutton a huge promotion and also stood in front of soldiers wearing gas masks. Creepy! Finally, is the plebiscite back from the dead… in postal form? Who can say.
Desperately missing Alice, Mark coerces his colleague Lane Sainty into joining him for a short rundown of the latest political news. In this bonus elevator podcast (like an elevator pitch, but more podcast-y), Mark and Lane talk same-sex marriage, the latest round of Turnbull vs. Abbott, and why criminal gangs might be buying our Medicare details online.
Canberra insider and Chief Minister of the ACT Andrew Barr has one or two opinions on the state of marriage equality, why it is important, and when it might happen. But first, as we're in Canberra for the comedy festival, we workshop Canberra a little bit. And also there's a great buggery joke. Kyran Wheatley and Rhys Nicholson hosting as always. Lane Sainty will be back in the coming weeks.
Lane Sainty of Buzzfeed tells Kyran about the MP who doesn't want rainbow flags in government buildings and whether the Prime Minister marched in Mardi Gras. Then comedian Alex Ward joins us to talk about flags, mardi gras and advertising. Listen in!

Adam Richard drops by our loungeroom and talks about what's changed in the marriage debate over the last 30 years - and also a lot about sex. Obviously. And about his podcast Talking Poofy, and the feedback he used to get. But first up Lane Sainty of Buzzfeed News gives Rhys and Kyran the lowdown on what's been happening in Canberra over the last few months and what we can expect in the next few. Rhys and Kyran listen dutifully and feel like they're bad gays for not knowing any of it. Music is by the brilliant Brendan Maclean. You can watch his clip for House Of Air here http://www.brianandkarl.com/BRENDAN-MACLEAN-House-of-Air but be warned it is absolutely the least safe for work video I have seen that isn't just straight up porn.
Lane Sainty from Buzzfeed explain how the plebiscite was rejected by the Senate. And then Kyran and Rhys try and come to terms with what's to come (or not) form the next few years... we get quite, um, angry.
"To actively isolate a human being is nothing short of structural violence..." Rhys Nicholson and Kyran Wheatley talk to Zoe Coombs Marr (for ages) about Australia's first gay wedding... her marriage to Rhys, at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. In depth look at the why, the how, the who and the whatever. We also get the latest from Canberra thanks to Lane Sainty of Buzzfeed. What's it like to get married with gay friends, gay cousins and a gay brother? And can anything be done to make them feel less shit? As we found out, yes. We went to a real life wedding and then chatted to Mason Bazeley, a school friend of Kyran's who got married on Sunday and changed one or two things in the ceremony. But first Lane Sainty from Buzzfeed brings us up to date on the news from Canberra. Check out more of Lane's excellent journalism here: www.buzzfeed.com/lanesainty And if you are interested in hearing the reading that we talk to Mason about check out RadioLab's excellent podcast epiosde featuring the story here: www.radiolab.org/story/122382-des…eeking-symmetry/ (it's about a minute in) The music in this podcast is by Brendan Maclean.
