Welcome to our Summer Series -- a chance to catch up on some episodes you may have missed out on the first time around. If you listened to the season 6 finale, you'll know that The First Time is taking a break in it's current format in 2024 BUT! Don't delete the feed just yet, Katherine will be back (solo) in March with something new. It'll feature interviews with writers but also creatives, comedians and entrepreneurs. Finally, to celebrate six years of the pod and to kick off the coach-sulting (coaching/consulting) work she'll be doing this year (see here), check out Katherine's tips on interviewing and being interviewed (via Instagram). This is a conversation Kate has been dying to have for awhile now - keen for the lowdown on The Letdown and generally a massive fan of Alison Bell's work. Alison is the co-creator/co-writer/producer/director and star of the award winning ABC and Netflix co-production The Letdown. Together with her co-writer, Sarah Scheller, Alison won the 2016 AACTA Award for Best Television Screenplay. The Letdown also won the AACTA Award for Best Comedy Program for both seasons 1 + 2 (20017 + 2019). Alison's performance was recognised with the AACTA for Best Comedy Performer for her work in the second season of The Letdown, her fourth performance nomination. Other nominations include the 2019 AACTA Award for Best Direction in a Television Comedy or Drama for her TV directorial debut, (The Letdown). In 2021, Alison developed and led the writing team on the critically acclaimed Binge series, LOVE ME.. The show picked up 7 Logie nominations. She wrote and starred in an episode of Summer Love, an ABC anthology series, which aired in August 2022, and in the ABC drama, Significant Others, airing October 2022. She has worked as an assessor for Playwriting Australia, a script consultant on theatre productions and short films and has contributed pieces to Marie Claire and Vogue Australia. She's worked with production companies both here and in the US, including Sharon Horgan's Merman, the FX Network, Kapital Entertainment, EKO, Giant Dwarf, Wooden Horse, Endemol Shine and the ABC. Prior to making The Letdown Alison was best known for her dramatic work on the stage, for which she won multiple Helpmann and Greenroom Awards, as well as her starring role in the AACTA Award winning comedy Laid. She has guest starred in many Australian series and her US credits include the HBO's The Leftovers, No Activity for CBS All Access and the reboot of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories on AppleTV+. Alison is currently appearing in the MTC production of What If If Only this August and September in a double bill. The conversation covers:  Alison's early love of stories and when she found drama having the mindset for an artistic career - (and a healthy acknowledgement for 'luck') the impact of having kids on an artistic career Alison's interview with Jemma Birrell on the excellent The Secret Life of Writers podcast where she talks about unfinished manuscripts and 'learning by doing' the 'mini bible' used to pitch for screen How and why The Letdown was such a success How Alison and co-writer Sarah Scheller mined their own and their friends' experiences of motherhood for The Letdown Becoming an 'accidental' show runner Writing for screen  Adapting books for screen and the disappointment when you 'miss the moment' On guilt - (as discussed with Ash Devenport in The Design Files) Not pushing yourself until 'you're broken' - 'it's okay to be a little bit rubbish at things' Working with Back to Back theatre Alison's advice: Truth. Truth is the most interesting thing. The human experience in its truest form. Lost Spaces
"It Felt Like There Was Only One Way To Be Queer" - with Natali Caro

Lost Spaces

What's the future for Lost Spaces podcast? I need your help figuring that out! Please complete the Lost Spaces listener survey before the end of January and I'll be your best friend forever - http://tinyurl.com/lostspacespodcastsurvey So it's fairly well established that I think queer spaces are really significant and an important way to explore your identity and dip your big toe into the queer lake of fabulosity. But, what we don't talk a lot about on this show is the importance of queer performance spaces, where people who are just starting out - singers, comedians, jugglers - have the chance to perform in front of an understanding audience (even if they do occasionally heckle and objectify you - somehow it's ok when it's a queer audience!). Anyway, that was my way of introducing this week's guest, comedian extraordinaire, Natali Caro, who found a queer comedy night at Giant Dwarf in Sydney early on in their career, and says that it helped them to be brave and try different things that helped them step into their comedic excellence. So much so, in fact, that it inspired them to set up their own night - Gag - that we will find out more about during this episode. Do you have any memories of Giant Dwarf, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Bonus points for embarrassing photos! You can also find me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lostspacespod) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/lostspacespod). Find out more about Natali by following them on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/nati_daddy_/) Takeaways Performing to a queer audience is often more rewarding and understanding than performing to a non-queer audience. Comedy can be a powerful tool for self-expression and reaching people with important messages. Overcoming shyness and pursuing comedy can be a transformative experience. The first solo performance can be nerve-wracking but can also lead to personal growth and confidence. Queer comedy festivals provide opportunities for performers to showcase their work in a supportive and inclusive environment. Inclusive comedy spaces are important for marginalised communities who often feel excluded from mainstream comedy. Queer clubbing can be challenging for individuals who don't feel like they fit into the traditional party scene or who prefer non-clubbing related entertainment. Creating an inclusive space requires intentional programming, representation, and a welcoming atmosphere set by the host or organiser. The intangible element of 'vibes' plays a role in the overall experience of a comedy night or event. Measuring self-worth based on output can be detrimental and it's important to let go of the need for validation. Living in a cave may sound appealing at times, but human connection and applause can bring joy and fulfillment! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/k-anderson/message

Haz's experience is in devised and collaborative work, rooted in comedy, pastiched with drag, performance art, movement, wordplay and absolute buggery. Haz is invested in developing non-binary ways of making that refuse rigid performance structures; as explored in their three latest 45 minute works; Rising Damp: A Sporepunk unearthing of a queer utopia at La Mama HQ (2022), The (Sour Glitch) Two-Step Refusal at The Flying Nun by Brand X (2021) and 101101001: Dude Where's My Gender at The Giant Dwarf (2020). As a writer, Haz has received mentorship with ATYP as part of National Studio (2020) and Fresh Ink (2021). Haz's work relishes in the illegible and incoherent; centering play and pleasure. He uses performance to make sense of himself and non-sense of the rest. They have a distinct modus operandi of gusto, ego, and innuendo.  Sophie Strykowski (she/they) is a performance maker and actor from Gadigal, currently living on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people. Their devised work reflects their positionality as a queer person, with the intention to dismantle and reimagine perceived truths with earnestness and delight. Sophie has worked across a range of independent and professional stages in Gadigal, including Griffin Theatre and ATYP in Intersection: Arrival (2019), Q Theatre in Originate (2020), Kings Cross Theatre [KXT] in Natives (2022) and Rogue Projects in Taz v. The Pleb (2023). Her work plays with form, combining elements of movement, comedy and experimental theater to ask big questions about the self, love, sexuality and connection. Sophie brings these questions to an audience with sparkling fearlessness and joyful curiosity. ------------------------------- Charaf Tartoussi joined Queering The Air as our third and final guest artist for the Melbourne Fringe Festival. With Death By Carrot's Riffmageddon II scheduled to hit South East Queensland over four days next weekend, HEAVY felt compelled to reach out to some of the major players in an attempt to shed some light on this massive undertaking that has taken in more than 60 cities over 14 weeks for Australia's biggest and most ambitious 100% homegrown stoner rock festival EVER.The Queensland leg will feature a host of national acts which includes Death By Carrot, Planet of the 8's, Giant Dwarf, Human Dinosaur Machine and Kitchen Witch, as well as a selection of hand picked local bands including Fumerole, Rhino, Krave, Kobrakai and Gutterfire.HEAVY caught up with Planet of the 8's guitarist J.C for a look at the shows, starting with the current state of the stoner metal scene in Australia and what can be done to further nurture it."It's... so we're in Melbourne and I like to think of Melbourne as being the stoner rock capital of the Southern hemisphere,” he measured. “There's a lot of bands down here doing it and there's a great scene around it. It crosses over from stoner rock into psych rock into doom and then the more metal elements of rock, so Melbourne has a great scene but what I have noticed around Australia as we go is it's kind of harder to find other bands in the genre to come through as supports. I think while Melbourne is the epicenter of it in Melbourne and the Southern hemisphere there's a bit of work... not work... but there's not as much around the country - at least that's how it seems. There might be underground ones we haven't heard of, but what can we do about? Keep going out and playing shows. I think a lot of people like this kind of music but aren't aware that there's a scene. When we first started our band, we just started doing this kind of music because we love it and then before we knew it, it was like hey, there's actually a lot going on. So, it's out there to be discovered - a lot of it in Melbourne obviously - but by going out and seeing bands and realising that there's a scene, I think that encourages people to get involved. Because one of the best things about the scene is the people. They are some of the most inclusive, chilled out, no dickheads environment than I have ever seen in a music scene. I like the idea that if we can keep putting on shows and touring and taking it to different parts of the country where they don't have so much of a scene people go ah, this is a thing, let's get involved. Maybe we'll start our own band."In the full interview, J.C talks more about Riffmageddon II, what to expect, the other bands playing, the importance of homegrown festivals,Expanding their sound, the band's upcoming album and more.

West Australian sun-baked heavy psych outfit Giant Dwarf have perhaps had it harder than most during recent lockdowns.Their home state was one of the toughest on restrictions and as such opened much after the rest of Australia, enforcing longer periods without live music and adding to growing frustrations. Now, with W.A on par with the rest of the country, Giant Dwarf are finally set to board the plane to the other side of Australia for Rifmageddon II which will take place in Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast from June 30 to July 3.The brainchild of local outfit Death By Carrot, Rifmageddon II travels far and wide, taking in more than 60 cities across 14 weeks, in the process taking stoner rock further and wider in this country than ever before. With the trip less than a week away, Giant Dwarf's Russ T sat down with HEAVY to talk about the run of shows, starting with how it feels to be finally let out of what must have felt like government imposed jail."Yeah, you can put it that way,” he laughed. “Last time we were about to get out we had some difficulties with one member and some commitments as well, so we had to scurry together a back up player. We got that done just in time and when we were about to fly out, we got the notification the world's going into lockdown. We've got flight credits still sitting there so basically this trip isn't costing us anything (laughs)."The travelling musical extravaganza is taking the growing genre to a wider audience than ever before, with Russ admitting it can only be a good thing for the music scene as a whole."It's good to know there's a bit of an appetite for it,” he nodded. “We'd like to see something like that definitely over in the West and if our friends in Death By Carrot needed some kind of liaison or sponsor for something like that I'm sure between myself, our good mates that run Pavement Studios and Fuzz Factory Touring - who already bring over a lot of the international and national acts - I'm sure we'd be able to muster up something together and get another little circuit going on. I'm hoping that once we play all those other groups that haven't seen us might think W.A's alright and maybe we can tee up something..."In the full interview, Russ talks about the other bands on the lineup, including Planet of the 8's, Human Dinosaur Machine and Kitchen Witch, the efforts by Death By Carrot in putting it all together, the state of the stoner rock in Australia and how it can be improved, their unique blending of styles and how it works, releasing music during COVID, their upcoming album and more.

With Death By Carrot's Riffmageddon II scheduled to hit South East Queensland over four days next weekend, HEAVY felt compelled to reach out to some of the major players in an attempt to shed some light on this massive undertaking that takes in over 60 cities over 14 weeks for Australia's biggest and most ambitious 100% homegrown stoner rock festival EVER.The Queensland leg will feature a host on national acts which includes Death By Carrot, Planet of the 8's, Giant Dwarf, Human Dinosaur Machine and Kitchen Witch, as well as a selection of hand picked local bands including Fumerole, Rhino, Krave, Kobrakai and Gutterfire.HEAVY caught up with Kitchen Witch for their take on Rifmageddon II."We're just so happy to be back,” vocalist Georgie Cosson enthused. “It's like, Kitchen Witch is back, the whole scene is back, people are travelling interstate. It's just changed my heart from black (laughs)... although it's pretty metal so... I think the whole scene is feeling the same. we just played last weekend with Dr. Colossus from Melbourne and that was so great. We went to Canberra and played the Sunburn Festival and that was unbelievable. It was two days and everyone was so stoked to be there. All the bands from interstate were totally chatting and there was a vibe that I haven't felt in a long time. People were just so happy to be putting their art out there again."In the full interview, Georgie talks more about the line-up, the feeling of getting back out on the road, the importance of festivals like this to the Australian music scene, Kitchen Witch's role in Aussie stoner rock moving forward, their sound and how it came together, new music and more.
