What happens when we sleep? Parasomnia is a sleep disorder that causes people to do strange or even dangerous things while they're asleep. In some shocking criminal cases, people have committed murders or sexually motivated crimes whilst asleep, arguing they acted involuntarily and without awareness. In this episode, Tim and Xanthe are joined by USYD sociolegal scholar and lecturer Christopher Rudge to discuss the parasomnia defense. Does it hold weight? Can people who kill in their sleep be considered murderers? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Agriculture remains a key sector of the economies of most Southeast Asian countries. It is supposed to provide nutritious, affordable, accessible and safe food to the people of SE Asia, and livelihood to more than 400 million farmers across the region. How is agriculture affected by climate change, and how can farmers cope with it? What is the relationship between farming and renewable energy installations, which require large land areas to be developed and thus encroach on agriculture? How to best manage water resources needed for farming, but threatened by climate change, and by pollution that often comes from farming? To discuss the challenges posed by climate change, the role of adaptation, food safety issues, and the importance of effective institutions and policies in supporting and guiding agriculture in Southeast Asia, Tiho Ancev, Professor in Agricultural and Resource Economics at the School of Economics, USYD, joins the podcast. Dr John Bartholomew is a Senior Lecturer in Quantum Science and Director of the Quantum Integration Laboratory at the University of Sydney. His team is engineering next generation technology for computing, communication and metrology using single atoms that absorb and emit light. Prior to joining the School of Physics at USYD he held research positions at Caltech, Chimie Paristech and the Australian National University where he did his PhD. John helped establish the Sydney Quantum Academy, and is currently the Deputy Director of the Australian Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems. The first time I met John, well actually… saw John, I was peaking around the church hall door, where myself and the other girls had heard that the two new ministers had moved into town with their three sons. I'd go on to call John a great friend through high school, uni and beyond, where I saw him succeed at literally everything he put his mind to. Whether he was the captain of the school or the hockey team, singing, playing music, working towards his PhD, or being a reliable and kind friend who was always the calmest person in the room. John and I spoke about how a flexible concept like creativity helps him in his work with precise measurements and absolutes, as well as the role of flexibility in designing scientific experiments. I feel particularly spoilt to say I spent the morning shooting the breeze about atoms and lasers and quantum mechanics with my good friend Johnny B. As with all my guests, I started by asking him what he'd do with his days after winning $100M. Please enjoy my chat with John.  ----- Connect with us: oathandstone.com.au instagram.com/trishjohnstone instagram.com/oathandstonedesigns

Dr Krishnan has spent many years contributing to ADA NSW, initially on and then as chair of the Recent Graduate Committee and more recently as a Board Director. He is also on the board of Filling The Gap and runs his own private practice. Impressive, yet my interest was peaked when he shared his new project with the University of Sydney. Dr Krishnan has put together a course for Usyd students to help them with transitioning to private practice. Together with hand chosen people from his broad network of passionate, excellent colleagues, Rohan is able to make a difference at the coalface. And I truly hope this becomes an Australia and New Zealand University wide approach. The post #66 – [Re-Run] Dental Students to Graduates with Dr Rohan Krishnan appeared first on Dental Head Start.

During this time of lockdown, the centre for quantum software and information (QSI) at the University of Technology Sydney has launched an online seminar series. With talks once or twice a week from leading researchers in the field, meQuanics is supporting this series by mirroring the audio from each talk. I would encourage if you listen to this episode, to visit and subscribe to the UTS:QSI YouTube page to see each of these talks with the associated slides to help it make more sense. https://youtu.be/L_VldJN_k-4 Bosonic mode error correcting codes: Quantum oscillators with an infinite Hilbert space TITLE: Quantum computing with rotation-symmetric bosonic codes SPEAKER: Assistant Professor Josh Combes AFFILIATION: University of Colorado Boulder, CO, USA HOSTED BY: A/Prof Chris Ferrie, UTS Centre for Quantum Software and Information ABSTRACT: Bosonic mode error correcting codes are error correcting codes where a qubit (or qudit) is encoded into one or multiple bosonic modes, i.e., quantum oscillators with an infinite Hilbert space. In the first part of this talk I will give an introduction codes that have a phase space translation symmetry, i.e. the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill aka GKP, and codes that obey a rotation symmetry. Moreover, I will survey the impressive experimental progress on these codes. The second part of the talk I focus on single-mode codes that obey rotation symmetry in phase space, such as the the well known Cat and Binomial codes. I will introduce a universal scheme for this class of codes based only on simple and experimentally well-motivated interactions. The scheme is fault-tolerant in the sense that small errors are guaranteed to remain small under the considered gates. I will also introduce a fault-tolerant error correction scheme based on cross-Kerr interactions and imperfect destructive phase measurement (e.g., a marginal of heterodyne). Remarkably, the error correction scheme approaches the optimal recovery map for Cat and Binomial codes when the auxiliary modes are error free. We numerically compute break-even thresholds under loss and dephasing, with ideal auxiliary systems. If time permits I will discuss the search for optimized codes and progress towards genuine fault tolerance. Joint work with Arne Grimsmo, USyd and Ben Baragiola, RMIT

Whether it's cavities, bleeding gums, crooked teeth or wisdom teeth impaction, there's no doubt our modern mouths are very sick. Our current dental care is excellent at fixing these problems. Build It. They'll Come.
University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor, Dr Michael Spence AC on how to build a fundraising campaign that Inspired people to donate a cool $1 Billion & busted a few myths about Australians' gift-giving along the way.

Build It. They'll Come.

Law academic, linguist and theologian Dr Michael Spence AC has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney for a dozen years, & in that time he's modernised and simplified the venerated sandstone institution, by essentially bringing together what he saw as a bunch of warring Faculty factions, to unite to make the university more community-facing, rather than inward-looking. Along the way he's had his critics and some spectacular fails. But one of his enduring successes was the massive Inspired! fundraising initiative instigated by Michael Spence 10 years ago. With an initial target to raise $600million, Spence and his team built the campaign around some winning arguments to potential donors around the exciting future between the university and the community's needs. And contrary to what many warned him about Australians not giving to higher education, Spence backed his own judgement that Australians would donate generously, if the ask was framed properly.  The Inspired! campaign ended up outdoing itself… the final amount raised was $1 Billion. In this interview Spence talks about how he and the team built and executed that winning campaign. Plus, how he and USyd are managing through the Covid19 crisis, not only with international border closures and absent foreign students, but also with the growing political backlash towards China and its influence affecting universities.
