FROM DJ SPINNA PODCASTS: Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) The whole world knows that I'm a huge Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince buff. But the other beast of a soul artist that I love to death is Marvin Gaye, of course! His music deeply expresses the soul of a man. The most bewildering thing about Marvin that I've come to understand more in my adult years is how he was able express his life experiences so artistically despite all his traumatic upheaval. I mean, his pops was a cross dressing preacher that practically despised his own son. I'll never forget the day I found out his dad took him out, the day before his birthday! I couldn't understand it and I was sad as hell. But life is wild that way. All that pain he endured led to greatness. Check these two youtube clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUfsI9jJr_I&feature=related (Tom Joyner interview) The most honest interview I think I've ever seen an artist do while they're STILL dealing with their issues, not after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ9FViYsDQA His dad was illmatic! And a suggested read... Divided Soul: The Life Of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz (who actually co wrote Sexual Healing) This book will change your life and have you paying more attention to Marvin's lyrics. I guarantee it! I grew up with his music like so many so I thought it was only right to bless the world with a mix. Included here here in this first episode are some rare releases, B-sides, alternate versions, exclusive re-edits and remixes courtesy of myself and some legendary dj/producer friends. More Marvin heat to come shortly... Enjoy BLOG POST https://soulofsydney.org/2011/04/03/marvin/

Anderson Cooper, AGT Winner, The View, CNN, Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, Fox, The Talk.Happy Thanksgiving!!!I Talk with Landau about his Succesful His Career & What He is Grateful For! His is a true rags to riches story; car wash rags. When Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. showed up to audition for America's Got Talent, he was singing to pass the time while grinding out a living washing cars. The only “nice” clothes he owned were the ones on his back: a pair of jeans, a modest button down striped shirt, and jacket. Fortunately, you don't need a large wardrobe to win America's heart. He's performed all over the world, from China to New York City, Los Angeles to Europe where he had the honor to perform for U.S. servicemen and their families stationed there. He's sung the national anthem prior to games by the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, New York Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Oklahoma City Thunder, Washington Nationals, and his beloved West Virginia University Mountaineers during a nationally televised homecoming game. You need talent, and Landau has truckloads of that. Since wowing the judges with his interpretations of classics by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and walking away with the million dollar grand prize in front of 14 million weekly viewers on AGT, Landau has released his Columbia Records debut “That's Life” (the CD hit #1 on the Billboard Jazz chart and was produced by Grammy winner Steve Tyrell, who also helmed Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook album). Landau has performed all over the country, from the California State Fair to New York's famous Apollo Theatre, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to the Marina Civic Center in Florida and all points in between. Along the way, he has appeared on The Today Show, The View, CNN, Fox and Friends, The Wendy Williams Show, The Talk, Anderson Cooper, Tom Joyner, Sirius XM, NPR, and dozens of other outlets. Landau was named “West Virginian of the Year” by his home state where he has performed a series of sold out concerts helping raise over a half million dollars for state charities. He's played a special command performance at the Governors Inauguration, won Reality TV Personality of the Year in Hollywood, and was honored to perform with his band for U.S. Troops in Germany. He is currently on tour with Glenn Leonard, formally of The Temptations; Joe Blunt, formally of The Drifters and Joe Coleman, formally of The Platters. But all that success hasn't made Landau forget his roots. He was born in the Mountain State of West Virginia and continues to live there rather than move to entertainment industry hubs like Los Angeles or New York. “West Virginia will always be my home,” says Landau, “and home and family are the most important thing in the world to me. I can always fly out to LA or New York for work, but being here helps keep me humble and grounded. I'm just very fortunate to be living my dream.”Recently, Landau and award winning co-author Rick Robinson have written America's Got Talent Winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.: From Washing Cars to Hollywood Star, a book chronicling Landau's All-American success story. He's also completed an album full of holiday favorites, Christmas Made For Two. His touring schedule stays booked with shows all over the country including numerous CD and book signing appearances. He and the incredibly talented “Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. Big Band” are currently beginning his Classic Christmas Crooners Tour with a full slate of concerts at home and abroad. Nicknamed America's “Fly Jock,” Tom Joyner was the #1 voice of Black radio for over 25 years. He earned his nickname because he hosted a morning show in Dallas and an afternoon show in Chicago, which required that he fly back and forth from city to city every day. Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, Tom attended local HBCU Tuskegee University. His first passion was music and he was even an early member of the Commodores. In 1983, his radio career took off and he never looked back. After 25 years, only one thing could derail the King of Black Radio … technology. With his salary dictated by listenership and with the popularity of radio on the decline, Black radio's “Fly Jock” decided to retire from the airwaves. He was the first African-American to be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame and he left a legacy that can be described by his own words: “Superserve the African-American community and continue to give back.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I had my first trip to Dallas last August and was looking forward to a few things: Visiting the Texas School Book Depository, Eating some Texas BBQ, and listening to the radio. We did all three but I did not check out a lot of country radio which is weird because Dallas radio is full of country music, sports, and is the home of the venerable Kidd Kraddick show. It also has some legendary personalities who have left their mark on the city (like Kidd), but also Ron Chapman, Terry Dorsey and Tom Joyner who did mornings in Dallas before jetting off to Chicago DAILY to do afternoon drive.Hawkeye has been apart of all of that in the market, including working alongside Terry Dorsey where he learned how to morning radio on the job. In this episode we discussed what makes Dallas a great place to do radio, what it takes to have a successful show in market number 5, why consultants can help grow your career, and what you need to know when you move to Dallas to do radio. We also had some random discussion about the sports scene, the changing demographics in communities and where to get some good Texas BBQ.We also spent time talking about the morning show, including the division in work and performance between himself and his co-host Michelle, and how much time to allot to on air vs. online.Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. There is no transcription for this episode yet because... well it's a long story. She says she can get distracted by nursing, taking supplements, and balancing her mental (3:08-4:14). He says having a mini him in CJ felt so perfect, he didn't know it could get even better having 2 (5:20-7:55). They discuss their different takes on timing; Charles wasn't ready for another kid the same time Shireen was, and then was impatient once he got on board, finally conceiving after 9mo (9:34-14:30). Despite having in-house support from Charles' mother Shontina, which Shireen loves, Charles has a hard time being fully comfortable as the man of his house. To the kids, grandma can do no wrong, same dynamic with Charles and his grandmother (16:10-20:10). Charles talks about this difference between 1-2 kids, wants to stay home more, event scheduling is done around family now. CJ is a sweet sensitive child and both parents work to make sure hes always nurtured. They make it a point to designate one on one time with both kids. Charles/CJ time is getting haircuts together (23:02-29:10). Shireen shares that she had baby blues but not full postpartum depression with CJ. She didn't know what she needed and couldn't articulate it. Charles struggled trying to find a solution so just implored that the best thing he could do was just be there to listen. He surprised her with her NY friends for her birthday. Shireen's sacrifice uprooting to the west coast didn't go unnoticed by Charles. From the bay to LA, they prayed constantly. "Your blessing isn't your comfort zone"-Shireen (30:00-38:09). They're happy to know/have more knowledge and support with baby #2, so the prayers are to be richer and richer since childcare is expensive(private school, larger house). The couple advise everyone considering expanding their family to communicate with their partners and families. Consult doctors, ladies talk to other mothers/like minded people. It's fair to say that Sybil Wilkes, the former co-host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, had her doubts in the beginning about her career in broadcasting, but helping hands along the way illuminated the path forward. The power of sisterhood is one of her guiding principles; she credits her mother for being a strong role model, leading her to be an advocate for others, especially women and people of color in the entertainment industry.YoSy, the media company she co-founded with her best friend, extends her “Be Informed, Be empowered” message to all of those around her. She shares with Jeanne how a few choice words from her mother let her know it was ok to step outside of her comfort zone, how self-awareness can make or break you, the three things she does for herself (or at least tries to do) everyday, and how being fired by legendary radio executive Marv Dyson turned out to be a blessing in disguise. About Sybil:Sybil is a Chicago native and graduate of Northwestern University, earning a Bachelors of Science in Political Science and Communication Studies. She began her radio career in 1985 as a production assistant at WKQX-FM, Chicago. She moved into news, leaving her hometown, and reporting for stations throughout the Southwest. I Talk with Landau about his Thoughts' on His Career, Adapting to the NEW Normal in Entertainment Events. What is He Grateful For. I'm just very fortunate to be living my dream.” Recently, Landau and award winning co-author Rick Robinson have written America's Got Talent Winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.: From Washing Cars to Hollywood Star, a book chronicling Landau's All-American success story.
