Happy Mardi Gras! In this episode of Take-Away with Sam Oches, Sam talks with James Vitrano, the CEO of Sucré, a French patisserie concept out of New Orleans that has eight locations across the Southeast. James and his pastry chef wife Abney Harper bought Sucré in 2023, looking to scale the luxury patisserie concept that specializes in macrons, gelato, and a range of handmade French desserts. James joined the podcast to talk about the challenges of scaling an emerging brand and particularly building brand awareness and balancing costs while simultaneously providing an incredible experience to each and every guest. In this conversation, you'll find out why:A little bit of passion goes a long way in scaling a businessWhen building your restaurant experience, consider a sense of place With a sense of place, your growth should be more calculatedWhen building an emerging chain, sometimes you've got to be MacGyver You should only launch a franchise when the concept is 100% readyMoments are the new experiencesBrand awareness is one of the biggest challenges for an emerging brand Have feedback or ideas for Take-Away? This right wing toxic masculinity garbage is just that - garbage; What happens when DOGE fires all the competent Federal workers? That's a helluva story, Tommy - but your masculinity is still intact; The rugrats are back
In most cities in the US, after you’ve blown it out on New Year’s Eve, if you want another socially approved excuse to party you have to wait a bit. Memorial Day is 5 months away. At best you might be able to get away with Spring Break – that’s about 4 months. Here in New Orleans, you have less than a week till the next round of society-sanctioned excessive eating, drinking and socializing begins. January 6th is 12th night, the official beginning of Mardi Gras. That’s when the first parades begin. And, traditionally, when bakers start selling king cake. Since 2019, it’s also opening day of a king cake lover’s paradise: King Cake Hub. King Cake Hub is Jennifer Samuels’ 2-month a year business. It’s a single location where you can get practically every variety of king cake available in New Orleans. Currently there are 80 of them. They’re baked by 25 different bakers. And the King Cake Hub collection is curated - meaning Jennifer tastes and approves every king cake. New Orleans - a city on the banks of the Mississippi River - takes its name from Orléans, a city on the banks of the Loire River, in France. We can argue about who New Orleans’ most famous citizen is – probably Louis Armstrong - but undoubtedly Orléans’ most famous citizen is The Maid of Orleans. Her name was Jeanne d’Arc and she became known to the English-speaking world as Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc’s birthday is January 6th. Which is also, as I mentioned, 12th night, the first night of Mardi Gras. It was that fact, and the feeling that 12th night wasn’t being celebrated with enough inclusive diversity in New Orleans, that led Amy Kirk Duvoisin to found the Joan of Arc Project. The flagship activity of the Joan of Arc Project is the Joan of Arc Parade, on 12th night. It’s a walking parade set in Joan’s era, the 1400’s, with medieval costumes, music, characters on horseback, and roving entertainers like jugglers and stilt walkers. The paraders have Medieval throws – and king cake. If you don’t know anything else about New Orleans, you know we’re the home of Mardi Gras – the biggest, rowdiest, annual street party in the country. If you live in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is more than just a party. It’s more than just a whole lot of parties. It’s part of the fabric of the city – from our culture to our economy. And, like other aspects of culture and economics, it’s not static. It changes. And evolves. These evolutions are mostly the result of innovations that come from the creative minds of New Orleanians, like Jennifer Samuels and Amy Kirk Duvoisin. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Happy Mardi Gras lifers! We spent the last 4 days attached at the hip on a trip to the Northern Territory together! Are we sick of each other? Absolutely not. Do we have a lot to unpack about our new found closeness, yes. Yes we do. On today's episode we unpack just how good of a dad Matty J is, according to the media and why are the standards so different for mothers and fathers?!Then we are joined by the wonderful Ellie Cole! Ellie is Australia's most decorated female paralympian. She's also a laugh and a half. Ellie had her leg amputated when she was 3 after battling a rare form of cancer. With just one leg she has (literally) been making waves and has played a huge part in shifting the public's awareness of what living with a disability is like.In this chat we talk about our expectations of success and whether it brings true happiness, the toll her cancer and then living with a disability took on her family and Ellie not wanting to have to define her sexuality. You can find Ellie here: https://www.instagram.com/elliecoleswim/?hl=en Tell your mum, tell your dad, tell your dog, tell your friend and share the love because we love love! xxSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy Mardi Gras! Today Rob talks with New Orleans' own Erik Adrian Alexander - otherwise known as the creator of the “Nola Papa” brand, website, podcast and a soon-to-come magazine! You'll truly get a sense of his energy and motivation to make the world a better place for us all! Erik, married to his husband and has three children, also talks about his latest book, “The Adventures of Addie Underwater”, which was inspired by his daughters' love for mermaids.Erik shares his experience of creating Nola Papa, which he started in 2015 when he and his husband became fathers. He says that the blog was born out of fear as they did not know what they were doing. However, the blog turned out to be a great way to increase visibility for same-sex parents.Rob and Erik also discuss how there is a lack of representation of same-sex parents in children's books. Erik's book fills this gap and provides children with a positive representation of same-sex parents.Rob and Erik shares how they don't need titles to define their family and how they want their children to be judged based on who they are as individuals rather than their parents' sexual orientation. Erik's overall mission to broaden the one sided view of the stereotypical American family.Story Key Notes:

Happy Mardi Gras! Frank serves Kathryn some fig jam and toast as promised during the fig talk in the last episode. Kathryn thinks Frank could sell his fig jam and fig tree cuttings. Frank has had several crews of home-improvement workers at his house over the past few months. One of the workers asked to come inside to use the bathroom. Generally, they stand behind a tree. Frank scrubbed the bathroom after the worker used it because Kathryn was on her way over. Frank is not bothered by dead things but is grossed out by poop. Kathryn reveals that Frank has a photo of himself at a funeral. He saved a screen grab from a livestream of a funeral for a woman who was a “ballet mom” and “improv mom.” Her daughter was in the Nutcracker and is now in the Oak Ridge High School improv group. Kathryn admits that she will treat the spouse of a friend as if she knows them well. An introverted husband of a friend seemed surprised that Kathryn acted so familiar toward him. Frank spoke with two strangers at last week's Einstein Simplified show. One was visiting from Ohio and the other from North Carolina. The women said that Einstein Simplified was “legit funny.” Einstein Simplified was in a movie called “Fish Bait” that is now available on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait Frank took screen grabs from the PBS Passport link to his interview with Kathryn on “Up Close with Frank Murphy.” Here is the episode link: https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-frank-murphy-xqr1vv/ This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Happy Mardi Gras!! Billy and Bryce breakdown UGA's new OL coach hire, Falcons off-season FA, MLB maybe starting soon as well as the Hawks v Celtics. There's a ton of great games in our area tonight. Listen in to see where you can get out and support these local athletes on what looks to be a beautiful night.
It's Mardi Gras season and the boys are feeling it. Kraken Reaction has Jeff and Joey breaking down the Seattle Kraken's Canadian road trip and all of the things that went right and wrong in last week's 0-3 record starting with the Kraken getting pegged in Winnipeg after getting stomped at home by one of the NHL's best, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team started the game quickly up 2-0 and in typical Kraken Shit form, gave up a goal with 12.9 seconds left in the 1st period and ultimately losing 5-3 with an empty net dagger. In Calgary, we saw the return of their former Captain Mark Giordano and the Kraken hung tough against the red hot Flames but it wasn't enough and ended up falling 2-1 despite Grubauer's 35 saves on an historic night in the NHL with Everett Fitzhugh and JT Brown calling it from the broadcast booth as the first ever all black broadcasting team in NHL history. The boys cover how much they love being a part of an organization that goes out of its way to recognize and provide opportunities for minorities to thrive in the world of hockey as well as the touching Gio tribute and a credit to everyone who has to work at the Saddledome covering games risking their lives on their (likely illegal) catwalk. Next, Jeff and Joey preview upcoming matchups versus the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins at home before the Kraken are once again on the road facing the San Jose Sharks. Did you know that the city of San Jose has trees as well as four separate Wendy's locations?! Joey predicts an epic battle with Boston is coming up in his "game of the week" after the controversial hit Yanni Gourde dished out in their last match up as well as Brad Marchand returning from suspension. The two again discuss Brad Marchand, his history in the league, and Jeff defends his stance on wanting a guy like Marchand on the Kraken if they ever get the chance. No Dumb Questions has Joey ask Jeff what exactly is a two-pad stacker and why is it so special after witnessing a beautiful one by Jacob Markstrok on an Eberle shot attempt in Calgary. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him covering the history of Goalie equipment. Happy Mardi Gras, y'all!
