Sydney Mardi Gras 2026 falls on the first weekend of March this year so I had to get the Mardi Gras Anthems edition out ahead of time. The festival takes place over the last two weeks of February and the parade and party are the culmination of the festival. This year's edition lands firmly in the 'camp' musical arena with a veritable smorgasbord of divas contributing to the mix and a who's who of remixers lending their talents to the updated versions of these classic songs. Melbourne based DJ and producer Argonaut kicks the set off with his outstanding remix of Kylie's "What Do I Have To Do". Robert from Division 4 contributes four killer remixes here for Irene Cara, Demi Lovato, Destiny's Child and Agnes respectively. Russ Rich and Andy Allder's remix of Billie Eilish's "Birds Of A Feather" is one of my favourites and had to be included here. Reaching back in time are remixes for songs from Taxas, Madonna, Yazoo, Deniece Williams and Britney Spears. Mark from Dirty Disco pretty much owns this edition with stellar remixes for Whitney Houston, Blaze ft. Barbara Tucker and Yazoo. His remix of Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay" is balls to the wall incredible and his own original song "Because I Knew You" closes out the set. Unfortunately, the main closing party for this years Mardi Gras has been canceled so alternate parties are filling the gap. This years edition of Mardi Gras Anthems should keep you moving and grooving until Pride rolls around in June. Happy Mardi Gras and stay safe. Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

In a few coastal cities in the deep south, in the weeks before Lent begins, a strange behavior begins to appear. Honorable and respectable people step into a different personalities for a short time. They do it together, and it's a heck of a good time.  ----- Grown people acting like fools for a few days might very well be good for the soul. I'm not sure how large groups, primarily of men, agreeing to behave silly is therapeutic, but it is. I'll leave it to some psychologist try to explain it. As a participant, though, I assure you, it's good stuff. Over the top costumes, over the top floats, parading, parties, dancing. It's not behavior most participate in unless it's limited to a certain calendar window and amongst friends and neighbors. My wife's cousin visited over the holidays. She toured one of Mobile's museums and saw the extraordinary displays of costumes and the photos of floats and our city's royalty and their flamboyant, extravagant attire. It was all over the top, as it is intended to be. I told her that some people simply don't get it and she summed it up perfectly – to enjoy it, you have to be in on the joke. And that's it. I've not heard it said better. You've seen skits on TV or pranks where one person is playing the fool but won't let on that he's doing it? His face and behavior are serious and intentional, but all the while, but his behavior is, well, foolish. The people around him play along and everyone enjoys the spoof. Well, what if a group of people are in on the joke, behaving ridiculously for a narrow window of time but not letting anyone know that they know it's a spoof. In Mobile, Alabama, these groups are largely called Societies or Orders. In New Orleans they're called Krewes. They're all in on the joke. And what is the joke? The joke is that this doesn't matter but we act like it does. That our supposed kings and queens are kings and queens of nothing. Kings and queens of a type of Kabuki theater played out in front of the masses in elaborate, flamboyant costumes for their own entertainment and the enjoyment of their Societies, Orders, Krewes, their invited guests, their mothers and fathers, and, perhaps, their whole cities. There is no reason to do this. There are stories that tie these celebrations to preparations for lent, to Easter, even explaining the behavior away to the days before food could be refrigerated. But, underneath it all, there is no good reason to do this. And that's why we do it. That's part of the fun. We agree that for a while we look at each other out the side of our eye and for a few days and we'll not hold each other accountable for the silly things we say, or do, or wear. All is understood, Ok'd and soon forgotten. I have a ridiculous top hat that I'll wear in the coming days with my Mardi Gras costume. People will tell me I look like a fool. They're not in on the joke. They don't get it. Of course I do. And my reply to them will be this – and it's something they won't understand. I'll simply say, "Happy Mardi Gras." I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep it Real.

In most cities in the US, after you’ve blown it out on New Year’s Eve, if you want another socially approved excuse to party you have to wait a bit. Memorial Day is 5 months away. At best you might be able to get away with Spring Break – that’s about 4 months. Here in New Orleans, you have less than a week till the next round of society-sanctioned excessive eating, drinking and socializing begins. January 6th is 12th night, the official beginning of Mardi Gras. That’s when the first parades begin. And, traditionally, when bakers start selling king cake. Since 2019, it’s also opening day of a king cake lover’s paradise: King Cake Hub. King Cake Hub is Jennifer Samuels’ 2-month a year business. It’s a single location where you can get practically every variety of king cake available in New Orleans. Currently there are 80 of them. They’re baked by 25 different bakers. And the King Cake Hub collection is curated - meaning Jennifer tastes and approves every king cake. New Orleans - a city on the banks of the Mississippi River - takes its name from Orléans, a city on the banks of the Loire River, in France. We can argue about who New Orleans’ most famous citizen is – probably Louis Armstrong - but undoubtedly Orléans’ most famous citizen is The Maid of Orleans. Her name was Jeanne d’Arc and she became known to the English-speaking world as Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc’s birthday is January 6th. Which is also, as I mentioned, 12th night, the first night of Mardi Gras. It was that fact, and the feeling that 12th night wasn’t being celebrated with enough inclusive diversity in New Orleans, that led Amy Kirk Duvoisin to found the Joan of Arc Project. The flagship activity of the Joan of Arc Project is the Joan of Arc Parade, on 12th night. It’s a walking parade set in Joan’s era, the 1400’s, with medieval costumes, music, characters on horseback, and roving entertainers like jugglers and stilt walkers. The paraders have Medieval throws – and king cake. If you don’t know anything else about New Orleans, you know we’re the home of Mardi Gras – the biggest, rowdiest, annual street party in the country. If you live in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is more than just a party. It’s more than just a whole lot of parties. It’s part of the fabric of the city – from our culture to our economy. And, like other aspects of culture and economics, it’s not static. It changes. And evolves. These evolutions are mostly the result of innovations that come from the creative minds of New Orleanians, like Jennifer Samuels and Amy Kirk Duvoisin. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Happy Mardi Gras! Today Rob talks with New Orleans' own Erik Adrian Alexander - otherwise known as the creator of the “Nola Papa” brand, website, podcast and a soon-to-come magazine! You'll truly get a sense of his energy and motivation to make the world a better place for us all! Erik, married to his husband and has three children, also talks about his latest book, “The Adventures of Addie Underwater”, which was inspired by his daughters' love for mermaids.Erik shares his experience of creating Nola Papa, which he started in 2015 when he and his husband became fathers. He says that the blog was born out of fear as they did not know what they were doing. However, the blog turned out to be a great way to increase visibility for same-sex parents.Rob and Erik also discuss how there is a lack of representation of same-sex parents in children's books. Erik's book fills this gap and provides children with a positive representation of same-sex parents.Rob and Erik shares how they don't need titles to define their family and how they want their children to be judged based on who they are as individuals rather than their parents' sexual orientation. Erik's overall mission to broaden the one sided view of the stereotypical American family.Story Key Notes:

It's Mardi Gras season and the boys are feeling it. Kraken Reaction has Jeff and Joey breaking down the Seattle Kraken's Canadian road trip and all of the things that went right and wrong in last week's 0-3 record starting with the Kraken getting pegged in Winnipeg after getting stomped at home by one of the NHL's best, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team started the game quickly up 2-0 and in typical Kraken Shit form, gave up a goal with 12.9 seconds left in the 1st period and ultimately losing 5-3 with an empty net dagger. In Calgary, we saw the return of their former Captain Mark Giordano and the Kraken hung tough against the red hot Flames but it wasn't enough and ended up falling 2-1 despite Grubauer's 35 saves on an historic night in the NHL with Everett Fitzhugh and JT Brown calling it from the broadcast booth as the first ever all black broadcasting team in NHL history. The boys cover how much they love being a part of an organization that goes out of its way to recognize and provide opportunities for minorities to thrive in the world of hockey as well as the touching Gio tribute and a credit to everyone who has to work at the Saddledome covering games risking their lives on their (likely illegal) catwalk. Next, Jeff and Joey preview upcoming matchups versus the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins at home before the Kraken are once again on the road facing the San Jose Sharks. Did you know that the city of San Jose has trees as well as four separate Wendy's locations?! Joey predicts an epic battle with Boston is coming up in his "game of the week" after the controversial hit Yanni Gourde dished out in their last match up as well as Brad Marchand returning from suspension. The two again discuss Brad Marchand, his history in the league, and Jeff defends his stance on wanting a guy like Marchand on the Kraken if they ever get the chance. No Dumb Questions has Joey ask Jeff what exactly is a two-pad stacker and why is it so special after witnessing a beautiful one by Jacob Markstrok on an Eberle shot attempt in Calgary. Last, Hockey History with Jeff has him covering the history of Goalie equipment.
