A 48-year-old Wisconsin man, Scott Farmer, was sentenced to 37 and a half years in prison after his fifth drunk driving conviction led to a crash that killed four siblings. Waupaca County Judge Raymond Huber handed down the sentence on Friday, granting Farmer 342 days of credit for time already served, according to court records. The fatal incident occurred on December 16, 2023, when Farmer drove westbound in the eastbound lane of Highway 10 in Weyauwega. His vehicle collided head-on with a car carrying Daniel Gonzalez, 25; Fabian Gonzalez, 23; and their sisters, Lilian Gonzalez, 14, and Daniela Gonzalez, 9. All four siblings died at the scene. Emergency responders found a large bottle of vodka inside Farmer's truck. During the sentencing, prosecutors presented recordings of jailhouse calls between Farmer and his wife that contradicted his courtroom remorse. While Farmer told the court he wished he had died in the crash and prayed daily for the victims, the calls revealed a different sentiment. Farmer accused the victims' stepfather of running a sex trafficking ring out of his church. His wife reportedly said, "God was working through Scott" on the day of the crash. They also suggested that immigration checks should be conducted at the courtroom door, noting that many of the victims' family members are from Ecuador. Judge Huber condemned the comments as "outrageous" and "offensive to the court." The victims' mother, Paulina Schilling, shared her anguish during the proceedings. "A few days went by, and I had to go see them at the funeral parlor, which was the most heartbreaking day of my life," she said through a translator. "No one can imagine how I felt seeing all of them lifeless on a cot." In August, Farmer pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated for the fifth time. As part of a plea deal, one other criminal count and four pending traffic citations were dismissed. He was initially arrested on multiple charges, including operating with a revoked license, possessing open intoxicants in a vehicle, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. According to the criminal complaint, Farmer initially told officers after the crash, "I just spun out" and denied hitting anyone. He became belligerent toward firefighters and attempted to fight hospital staff. Eventually, he admitted to having had "a lot" to drink. Deputies noted that Farmer exhibited signs of severe intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and difficulty maintaining balance. A blood test revealed his blood alcohol content was .346—more than four times the legal limit of .08 for regular drivers in Wisconsin. Due to his prior convictions, Farmer's legal limit was reduced to .02. Farmer's history of drunk driving spans several decades, with convictions in 1999, 2001, 2006, and 2019. It's a record year in Phoenix when it comes to the heat. But it's always been hot here: Phoenix is considered to be the nation's hottest city — but even now the early mornings and late nights cannot always guarantee a break from high temperatures. Yet despite it all, Arizonans live their lives here. They go to work, they walk their dog, they see their friends. They survive in the heat day after day. For most, salvation comes from a jump in the pool or time spent in the air conditioning, but everyone here is influenced by the heat in their daily lives. This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we sit down with three Arizona Republic reporters who worked on One Week in the Heat. Lane Sainty, Ray Stern and Daniel Gonzalez join the show to discuss what they learned talking with doctors, the elderly, the unhoused and more for a real look at what it takes to live in the Phoenix sun. Companies have always been trying to engage young people on sustainability. But for some reason, this is getting harder. While Millennials were among the first to more heavily weigh social and environmental factors into employment decisions, Gen Z is taking this trend into hyperdrive. Companies hoping to attract and retain the best talent must tell authentic sustainability stories that are capable of persuading young people that they are committed to sustainability. In this episode, Mike speaks with Daniel Gonzalez — a recent Master's graduate from the Yale School of Environment — to get a deeper understanding of what Gen Z is looking for when it comes to sustainability communication, and offer some candid advice to companies looking to do better.Follow Daniel Gonzalez on LinkedIn.Read "Gen Z cares about sustainability more than anyone else – and is starting to make others feel the same" on World Economic Forum. Pa is astounded at his son's maturity, especially as they prepare to remove Ma from life support. Arya knows she is at peace in the backwaters, but Pa feels only emptiness and sadness. Arya knows what his father needs – deep medicine that lives in the pages of the Ramayana. Together, they begin a journey through the stories that Ma once told him as a boy. Stories and memories now etched in his heart. No longer afraid of his bullies, he bravely stands up to Athena and The Boys. Someone, Arya believes Rishiji, painted and added an Asian boy to the mural outside the school. The Boys try to get Arya to spray paint over the mural addition – or “the terrorist” as they referred to him as – but Arya refuses and the boys eventually let it go. Arya and Pa have dinner and decide it's time to let Ma go. His Pa marvels at how much Arya has changed, seemingly overnight. Arya fills Ma's hospital room with Jasmine flowers –her favorite Indian fragrance– and places her copy of the Ramayana by her pillow. They remove Ma from life support. Arya knows Ma is at peace in the backwaters, but Pa is very sad and is in need of deep medicine.
