This Week in Canadian edtech with Michael Furdyk @takingITglobal Announcing the CDN EdTech Summit partnership with @aConnectedNorth in support support of bridging the digital divide for Indigenous students in remote communities
Only 24% of households in Indigenous communities across Canada have access to modern, highspeed Internet, which means students in these places aren't getting the same new digital learning experiences as kids throughout the most of the country. Now, a program called Connected North is aiming to change all of that. In this episode, Michael Furdyk joins Erika Van Noort to discuss how Connected North is using two-way telepresence video technology to enhance the classroom experience in Indigenous Communities - through physical technology and interactive software specifically designed for remote access. Best of all, it's leading to lower dropout rates and more empowerment for First Nations students in school and life. Featuring: Michael Furdyk, Director of Innovation at TakingITGlobal Special thanks to Rebecca Martinez, Karen Buttigieg and Cheryl Stookes for lending their honest thoughts! We also talk about the politics of language when creating podcasts in a multi-lingual country. Starting in January, CYC Podcast will start doing a French language podcast each month, we will also be doing bilingual podcasts, and will be working towards providing transcripts of the podcasts in at least two languages. By February we will increase our schedule to deliver a podcast every Wednesday, hosted by a variety of people. Salvatore will continue on the 2nd Wednesday of the month and Wolfgang will still be on the last Wednesday. We will be adding new hosts on the 1st, 3rd (and when there are 5 Wednesday’s, the 4th) Wednesday of each month. We are excited about these changes and look forward to developing new, diverse, and engaging conversations in the coming months.

In this podcast Bruce has a conversation with Michael Furdyk, Director of Innovation at Taking It Global which he co-founded with his wife Jennifer Corriero seventeen years ago. TiG is a truly global organization, representing the exceptional work of young people across more than 150 countries focused around global awareness, environment stewardship and student voice. In this conversation, Michael discusses some of TiG’s work and talks about the opportunity for students to engage in authentic projects of passion ranging from the truly global to those that are more locally focused. He discusses the various programs that TiG has put in place to not only support young people, but also schools and school systems in building teacher capacity (TiGed.org) to provide resources and professional learning around inquiry within and beyond schools. Last week, one of the premier edtech events in the world took place in San Antonio, and it was our good fortune (Bruce, Missy, and I) to all be in attendance at the ISTE 2017 conference with about 16,000 others. In this podcast, Bruce and I reflect on the love/hate relationship we both have with the conference, and on ISTE's historical context as we reach a half a century of living with the idea of computers for learning with kids. We also entertain our very first SpeakPipe comment and question, one from Cheryl Doig in New Zealand who made us think about the humanity of technology and ISTE and edtech in general. We invite you to add your questions or comments below, and we'll weave them into our discussion next week.
