The Imitation Game. This episode features an interview with Omoju Miller, Founder and CEO of Fimio, a web3 reputation company. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Omoju holds a doctoral degree in Computer Science Education from UC Berkeley. Her expertise in machine learning and computational intelligence led her to companies such as Google and GitHub. Omoju also served as a volunteer advisor to the Obama administration's White House Presidential Innovation Fellows. In this episode, Sam sits down with Omoju to discuss how machine learning can make applications more secure, what the future of the internet looks like, and the fascinating story behind Fimio.-------------------“So my first view is, in this future internet we have people, we also have bots, we have machines, we have code doing things. And bots sounds like such a horrible word now. [...] You need to have a level of trust on what that bot is. Everything from the humans to the machines collaborating in this decentralized world, we need to have some kind of reputation attached to each of those nodes. And the reason why we need that reputation is, as the thing scales, it becomes overwhelming to get value from it. You need something to help you filter, to find what you're looking for. Otherwise, you get stuck in that environment where you're just completely overwhelmed and you don't even know what to do. So I think of what I'm doing as just reputation to make this decentralized future slightly more attainable.” – Omoju Miller-------------------Episode Timestamps:(00:59): Omoju's inspiration for starting Fimio(10:27): The future of smart contracts(28:47): Using mathematics to guarantee the safety of algorithms(34:34): What led Omoju to building a mathematical product(51:27): What open source data means to Omoju(55:38): One question Omoju wishes to be asked(57:47): Omoju's advice for the audience(01:00:08): Backstage takeaways with executive producer, Audra Montenegro-------------------Links:LinkedIn - Connect with OmojuVisit Fimio

Bac ar fhoghlaim dhigiteach de bharr bhearnaí oideachais. New research from the University of Galway shows that there are huge gaps in the education system that are restricting digital learning for young people. Léiríonn taighde nua ó Ollscoil na Gaillimhe go bhfuil bearnaí ollmhóra sa gcóras oideachais atá ag cur srian ar an bhfoghlaim dhigiteach do dhaoine óga. According to the research, a shortage of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics teachers - the so-called STEM subjects - is a barrier to progress in digital education. De réir an taighde tá ganntanas múinteoirí Eolaíochta, Teicneolaíochta, Innealtóireachta agus Matamaitice – na hábhair STEM mar a thugtar orthu - ina bhac ar ghabháil chun cinn san oideachas digiteach. Although Coding is available as part of the Junior Series and Computer Science is available at Advanced Certificate level, there are still many schools in the country that are unable to provide these subjects to their students because the teachers are not there. Cé go bhfuil Códú ar fáil mar chuid den tSraith Shóisearach agus Ríomheolaíocht ar fáil ag leibhéal na hArdteiste, fós fhéin tá go leor scoileanna sa tír nach bhfuil inann na hábhair sin a chur ar fáil dá gcuid daltaí mar gheall nach bhfuil na múinteoirí ann. That's what 'Capacity for, Access to, and Participation in Computer Science Education in Ireland', published today by the School of Education at the University of Galway, has shown. Sin é atá léirithe ag 'Capacity for, Access to, and Participation in Computer Science Education in Ireland' atá foilsithe inniu ag Scoil an Oideachais in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. The research shows that only 15.6% of schools in the country are providing the Computer Science course for the Leaving Certificate. Léiríonn an taighde nach bhfuil ach 15.6 faoin gcéad de scoileanna na tíre ag cur an chúrsa Ríomheolaíochta ar fáil don Ardteistiméireacht. 117 out of 728 post-primary schools that offer Coding for the Junior Series. 117 as 728 iar-bhunscoil a chuireann Códú ar fáil don tSraith Shóisearach. As for the teachers teaching computer science, only 34 of them are accredited. Maidir leis na múinteoirí atá ag múineadh ríomheolaíochta, níl creidiúnú ach ag 34 acu. Boys are mostly taking these courses in the schools where the subjects are available. Buachaillí is mó atá ag tabhairt faoi na gcúrsaí sin sna scoileanna ina bhfuil na hábhair ar fáil. Gender breakdown of the participants: 60% Coding in the Junior Series - boys 70% Computer Science in the Advanced Test - boys The research indicates that young people's understanding of the use of computers is "poor" even though they are easily accessible today. there on phones and technology. Dealú inscne na rannpháirtithe: 60 faoin gcéad Códú sa tSraith Shóisearach – buachaillí 70 faoin gcéad Ríomheolaíocht san Ardteist – buachaillí Tugtar le fios sa taighde go bhfuil an tuiscint atá ag daoine óga ar úsáid ríomhairí "lag" cé go bhfuil fáil acu go héasca sa lá atá inniu ann ar ghutháin agus ar an teicneolaíocht. The research recommends that computer education should start at a younger age to combat this lack. Moltar sa taighde gur cheart tús a chur le oideachas ríomhaireachta ag aois níos óige le dhul i ngleic leis an easpa sin. Sinéad Ní Neachtain will have more about that story on Nuacht TG4 at 1900. Beidh tuilleadh faoin scéal sin ag Sinéad Ní Neachtain ar Nuacht TG4 ag 1900. Computer science in the Ardtest is only available in ⅙ of the country's schools. Níl ríomheolaíocht san Ardteist ar fáil ach in ⅙ de scoileanna na tíre.

This episode description was written by ChatGPT. What do you think? In this episode of the Teaching Python podcast, Kelly and Sean delve into the topic of ChatGPT and its potential impact on computer science education. ChatGPT (https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/) is a new artificial intelligence tool developed by OpenAI that has generated a lot of buzz in the tech industry. The hosts consider both the potential benefits and drawbacks of using ChatGPT in the classroom, and discuss how it could be used to enhance the learning experience. One of the key points they address is the question of whether ChatGPT will be a helpful or harmful addition to computer science education. On the one hand, ChatGPT has the potential to be a powerful teaching aid, providing students with a unique and engaging way to learn. On the other hand, there are concerns that the use of ChatGPT could lead to a reduction in critical thinking skills, as students may rely too heavily on the tool for solutions. Ultimately, Kelly and Sean argue that ChatGPT has the potential to be a valuable resource for educators, but it is important to use it in a balanced and mindful way. They suggest that incorporating ChatGPT into the curriculum in combination with other teaching methods could be an effective way to maximize its benefits and minimize any negative effects. The University of Limerick is today announcing the launch of a new Global Fellowships programme as part of its BSc/MSc in Immersive Software Engineering (ISE). The programme is being funded through a major new philanthropic gift from cloud service provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS), which will allow UL to establish and fully fund the new Global Fellowships programme in perpetuity. This long-term collaboration between UL and AWS will help transform computer science education and research by attracting engineering leaders at all career levels from both industry and academia to UL's pioneering new ISE course. The ISE Global Fellowships will be highly competitive and prestigious software engineering awards. UL will appoint junior and senior Fellows coming from a variety of backgrounds, genders, expertise, and geographies, and each Fellow will be supported to spend between three weeks and six months inspiring ISE's students, collaborating with ISE's researchers, and engaging ISE's growing coalition of industry partners. Welcoming the gift, UL Foundation CEO Harvey Duthie, said: “This is one of the most significant investments in the ISE programme to date, and AWS' commitment will underwrite the Fellows Programme forever. It's a confident statement about the future of technology in Ireland and demonstrates the importance AWS places on supporting world-class education.” Professor Kerstin Mey, UL's President, said: “We want to create a globally prestigious teaching and research Fellowship for technology leaders. We are excited to have the backing of a global leader like AWS for what we believe will be one of the best software courses in the world.” Mike Beary, Country Manager, AWS Ireland, said: “AWS has invested in Ireland for over fifteen years, and this contribution is part of our ongoing and long-term commitment to supporting educational development across the island. The Global Fellows programme will bring together pioneering teaching and research with world-class thought leaders and practitioners to help develop tomorrow's technology leaders and innovators. “With a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, the Fellows will be drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds, skill sets, life experiences and global locations. AWS is proud to be part of the programme and to work with UL to inspire students, and to champion fresh approaches to issues of importance to society.” UL's BSc/MSc in ISE is a transformational new teaching and research initiative that will welcome its first students to the University in September. Students will learn by doing, working on projects and in paid residencies at some of ISE's more than fifty partner organisations. They will also achieve a Masters' qualification in four years. Brian Dennehy, General Manager, AWS Observability, added: “UL is a dynamic and innovative university with a long track record of working with industry to help support the graduates of tomorrow. We look forward to working with UL to support its aim to change and shape the way computer science is taught in Ireland today and welcome a new and diverse pipeline of talent into the technology industry.” ISE Course Director, Professor Tiziana Margaria, said: “What we are doing at ISE with AWS is fundamentally different. The Fellowship programme will dramatically and positively benefit the entire ISE ecosystem, especially the education of ISE students and the depth and reach of our research. The medium to long term impact of this global network will be a game changer.” More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too. The computer science field is exploding! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in computer science (CS) are expected to grow 22% over the next decade, much higher than other industry's projected growth percentages. While this growth presents amazing opportunities for many, some populations are less likely to benefit. Black, Latinx, and female professionals are underrepresented in computer science today. According to 2020 survey data, only 25.2% of computing occupations are held by women, dropping even lower for Blacks (9.1%) and Latinx (8.4%).  We were privileged to be able to discuss this issue with Julia Flores. Julia was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. She was fortunate enough to attend several Chicago Public Schools before going on to receive a BS in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and two master's degrees from Roosevelt University.  Over the course of 15 years, Julia has been a teacher, school administrator, and district administrator primarily within Career and Technical Education at one of the largest school districts in the nation. Her career has been focused on curriculum, professional development, and assessment development. She rounded out her experience when she served as a Director of Instruction for one of the largest out-of-school-time non-profits in the United States. She eventually started her own consulting firm and focused her attention on public education. Through her company, she was able to return to help Chicago Public Schools develop the first-ever holistic CS program in the nation. Now, Julia works with the CS for Success team to help other educational entities create equitable, inclusive, and high-quality computer science experiences for students. In this episode, we discuss the CS education landscape in the United States, along with the inequities teachers and students face. Plus, Julia shares her advice and resources to help CS educators advocate for themselves and their students.  You can learn more about CS for Success on their website and Twitter.
