Have you ever heard of daredevil Bobby Leach? On July 25, 1911 he became the second person to ever successfully go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Later in his life, Bobby Leach died from surgical complications after slipping on an orange peel, severely damaging his leg. Which once again proves the saying, “It's the little things that kill you!” Far too often, we live as if “sin” is just a “little thing”! In his great work, THE MORTIFICATION OF SIN, puritan theologian John Owen wrote these famous words, "Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you." This is the great warning from the Apostle James in the passage Pastor Joe Still shares in this message... unless we deal with our sin, it will be killing us!

The Mortification of Sin Book Study Chapters 8 and 9 with class discussion. Note by Greg Herrick These are the kinds of lusts and sins, says Owen, that make their way into all the faculties of the soul, including the emotions where they often take up residence, as it were. As a result they become familiar to the mind and cause no great alarm when they appear- they can ply their trade without the slightest bit of resistance. Owen says they are dangerous for two reasons- -1- The person who lives in such a condition becomes increasingly unable to distinguish between the long abode of an unmortified sin and the dominion of sin, the latter of which can only properly be said of a non-Christian, and -2- the person who sees his lust so fixed in his soul lacks hope, struggling to believe that things will change and his peace restored--
People who apply grace and mercy to unmortified sin, or sin not sincerely endeavored to be mortified, are deceitful and entangled in the love of sin. To indulge in sin because you know that God will forgive you is the height of hypocrisy and turns the grace of God into an occasion for license, the very thing Paul warned against in Romans 6-1-2-

Hatred of sin as sin, not only as galling or disquieting, a sense of the love of Christ in the cross, lie at the bottom of all true spiritual mortification. Now, it is certain that that which I speak of proceeds from self-love. You set yourself with all diligence and earnestness to mortify such a lust or sin- what is the reason of it-- It disquiets you, it has taken away your peace, it fills your heart with sorrow, and trouble, and fear- you have no rest because of it. Yea- but, friend, you have neglected prayer or reading- you have been vain and loose in your walk in other things...

Before explaining chapters 8 through 14 on the particulars of what the mortification of sin is, I felt it would be essential to study the very nature of sin itself using John Owen's Treatise on Indwelling Sin Chapters 4 and 5.
Some lusts are far more sensible and discernible in their violent actings than others. Paul puts a difference between uncleanness and all other sins- 1 Corinthians 6-18, -Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body- but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. -Hence, the motions of that sin are more sensible, more discernible than of others- when perhaps the love of the world, or the like, is in a person no less habitually predominant than that, yet it makes not so great a combustion in the whole man.

TO MORTIFY A SIN IS NOT---1- To Utterly Kill It-2- The Dissimulation of it-3- The Diversion of it-4- Acquiring a Sedate or Quiet Nature-5- To Have Occasional Victory Over It
The Mortification of Sin Chapters 5 and 6 --Sometimes, when a man yields to temptation and commits a sin willfully, it disturbs his peace, convicts his conscience, causes him to fear embarrassment of scandal, and convinces him he has surely provoked God. When this happens, the man wakes up to the ugliness of sin. This recognition brings him to hate his sin and himself for committing it. It sends him to God, makes him cry out as if to plea for his life, to hate his lust as he hates hell and to set himself against it. Then, since the whole man, both spiritual and natural, is awakened, sin shrinks back, hides, and appears to be dead.

Today's lesson was a parenthesis at chapter 3 to assist the students to understand the important connection between assurance of salvation and evangelical holiness. Lack of assurance incapacitates the believer in his battle against the sin that wars against him. Who can fight with vigour and strength if he isn't sure whose side he is on in this battle--
