Status, Power, Influence, Like Refuse Paul Threw It All Out MESSAGE SUMMARY: What are we truly aiming for in life? This powerful message challenges us to examine our ultimate goals and purpose. Drawing from Philippians 3:7-15, we're invited to reflect on the Apostle Paul's radical transformation - from chasing earthly accolades to pursuing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul's journey reminds us that success without Christ isn't true success at all. The message encourages us to shift our focus from temporary achievements to lasting transformation, emphasizing that our identity should be rooted in our relationship with Jesus, not in our accomplishments or status. As we contemplate our own lives, we're urged to consider: are we striving for Christ-centered righteousness or merely following religious rules? This introspection can lead us to a deeper, more purposeful faith journey. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 100). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Hatred. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Love. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). There's always a lot of news to discuss, but this week there was specifically a lot of news to discuss for all the very best Diablo games: Diablo 2, Diablo 4, Diablo Immortal, end of list, apparently. All three of those games are going to have a new Warlock class, with Diablo 2 getting it immediately, the others slightly later. This is the first new class for Diablo 2 in 20 years, and the second one coming with Diablo 4's upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion (the other being Paladins). There was also a lot to discuss in WoW, as the Lunar Festival began, with zero holiday decor in sight. We don't think a fish tank is too much to ask. Speaking of cute disappointments, Hearthstone released another of those gatcha pets for even more money than before and it has us nostalgic for the days of horse armor. Seriously. And since Cory was joining us, there was a little spot of Heroes of the Storm hopium, which included a new patch and skins. If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. Hatred toward those who wounded you does not function as evidence of moral failure, spiritual immaturity, or psychological pathology; it functions as unprocessed attachment energy trapped in a nervous system that never received completion. The question therefore does not hinge on whether you may hate the person who hurt you, but whether hatred serves as an adaptive transitional response or calcifies into identity. From a neurobiological perspective, resentment reflects an activated threat circuit seeking resolution; from an attachment lens, it signals a ruptured bond demanding coherence; from an anthropological frame, it preserves group survival memory; from a spiritual dimension, it exposes the ego's attempt to metabolize betrayal without dissolving itself. Safe space, then, does not exist to justify hatred—it exists to convert raw affect into integrated meaning. The most efficient release of anger does not involve suppression, performance forgiveness, or retaliatory fantasy; it requires conscious exposure, somatic discharge, narrative restructuring, and identity reorganization. In other words, hatred may begin as protection—but if it remains unexamined, it becomes self-incarceration. The real question hides underneath the obvious one: Do you want justice, or do you want freedom?

I'd like to begin by thanking Andrea Marcus, a dear friend and long-time supporter of State of Tel Aviv and Beyond, for sponsoring this episode. Andrea is a Toronto resident, proud Jewish woman and spectacularly talented artist. She is deeply troubled by what has been happening in Toronto and Canada since October 7, 2023.This episode was to have been published on Sunday December 14, 2025. And then the Bondi Beach Chanukah massacre happened. Hours later, a Chanukah candle lighting began in Toronto, Canada. What ensued was appalling. As Toronto police watched.....Part I of this mini-series dropped in early December and focused on the violent attack on an IDF reserve soldier on November 5 in downtown Toronto. Jonathan Karten. Nothing about that attack was surprising. Since October 7, Toronto has become one of the most hostile cities in the western world for Jewish life. All things Jewish are targeted regularly. And the response of the police? Well, that's what we take a hard look at in today's podcast. Why is Toronto such a cesspit of antisemitic violence? Incitement. Hatred. Why is it tolerated? I have lived and studied this disturbing situation since October 7, carefully, and the reality of Toronto - Canada - and beyond - must be seen. And seen clearly. I have sifted through many hours of video, photographs and media coverage in order to document the broad and specific observations made. Toronto Chief of Police Myron Demkiw declined an opportunity to be interviewed to discuss these rather pressing issues. And the political leadership in Canada? With very few exceptions, they are complicit. Municipally. Provincially. Federally. This episode has shifted shape since December 14. We do address aspects of the Karten assault on November 5, in particular the arrest of six individuals connected with that incident. But we spend more time zooming out to look at the bigger picture, to try to understand why Toronto has become such fertile ground for Jew hatred. Many of the incidents we discuss took place after the assault on Jonathan Karten on November 5. And after Bondi. In the podcast notes we include links to Episode I of this series, as well as two-part series on antisemitism in Toronto that I put out a year ago. Extreme antisemitism in Toronto? It's neither new nor going to miraculously resolve. In th podcast notes, we set out other podcasts we have produced that are directly relevant to the issues raised in this episode, including Part 1 of this 2-part series.Certain archive material may be available to premium subcribers only. "72% of Americans say they hate big corporations—including Republicans." — Charles DerberIt's not just the right that's reacting against liberal democracy. Some progressives are also embracing populism. Charles Derber, longtime professor of sociology at Boston College, has a new book called Fighting Oligarchy: How Positive Populism Can Reclaim America. Rather than a dirty word, he argues, populism is an inevitable political response to the brutality of today's economy. We're in a disguised depression, he fears. Sixty percent of Americans say they feel one paycheck away from oblivion.72% of Americans say they hate big corporations, Derber reminds us. Not just Democrats—Republicans too. Such hostility to large capitalist enterprises thus represents a kind of political supermajority. And Derber, a man of the left, sees this as fertile ground for what he calls positive populism. It's a politics that connects economic grievance to democratic renewal, the way the 1890s Populists did, the way the New Deal did, the way Martin Luther King did when he insisted you couldn't fight for civil rights without fighting against war and capitalism. But can positive populism coexist with American capitalism? Derber says no. American capitalism is too oligarchic, too individualistic, too hostile to collective identity. It's not compatible with positive populism and thus, in Derber's mind at least, not compatible with survival. But that doesn't involve a Soviet-style elimination of the free market. It means something more like Northern European social democracy: strong unions, universal healthcare, a government that actually intervenes on behalf of ordinary people. The trap, Derber warns, is nostalgia for the pre-Trump era. Going back to the supposedly "consensus" years of Bush, Obama and Clinton is a circuitous way of getting to another Trump. Today's street demonstrators—from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to New York City—understand this. According to Derber, demonstrations against ICE and MAGA are associating the immigration crackdowns with corporate oligarchy, and authoritarian political power with the economic power of big capitalism. And so positive populism will prevail. At least according to Charles Derber. Fight the oligarchy! Five Takeaways● We're in a Disguised Depression: Sixty percent of Americans say they feel one paycheck away from disaster. This isn't radical rhetoric—it's mainstream public opinion.● Hatred of Corporations Is Bipartisan: 72-73% of Americans—including Republicans—say they hate big corporations. Derber sees this as fertile ground for positive populism.● Positive Populism Has Precedents: The 1890s Populists united white and Black workers. The New Deal gave ordinary people a stake. MLK linked civil rights to economics. These are the models.● Going Back to Pre-Trump Is a Trap: If Democrats return to Bush-Obama-Clinton centrism, they'll get another Trump. The resistance understands this. The establishment doesn't.● American Capitalism Is Incompatible: Positive populism can't coexist with American-style oligarchic capitalism. It needs transformation—not elimination of markets, but European-style social democracy. About the GuestCharles Derber is a professor of sociology at Boston College and author of more than twenty books, including Fighting Oligarchy: How Positive Populism Can Reclaim America and Bonfire: American Sociocide, Broken Relationships, and the Quest for Democracy. He is an old friend of Keen on America.ReferencesPeople mentioned:● Pepper Culpepper is an Oxford political scientist whose book Billionaire Backlash argues that backlash against billionaires could strengthen democracy.● Hélène Landemore is a Yale political scientist whose book Politics without Politicians makes the case for direct democracy.● William Jennings Bryan ran for President four times on a populist platform but, Derber argues, sold out the movement's anti-corporate thrust.● Martin Luther King Jr. argued that civil rights couldn't be separated from economic justice and opposition to war—a form of positive populism.● Bernie Sanders and AOC are examples of positive populists within the Democratic Party today.Historical references:● The 1890s Populist Movement united farmers and workers against the first Gilded Age oligarchy. Lawrence Goodwyn called it "the democratic moment."● The New Deal represented a form of positive populism with significant government intervention in markets and encouragement of union organizing.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. We all search for purpose in life. We wake up asking why we're here and what makes it all matter. So we look for meaning in careers, relationships, achievements, and pleasure. For a while, those things feel promising, but they never fully satisfy. You've felt that restlessness, too. Today, Pastor Bill will share with you that purpose can't be discovered in created things. It's only found in the Creator. When you find Jesus, you don't just find forgiveness; you finally find the purpose for which you were made.

We often wonder if the small things we do really matter: prayers whispered, kindness unseen, faithfulness when no one applauds. We serve, give, love, and sometimes feel unnoticed. But Scripture promises that nothing done in the name of Jesus is ever wasted. You may not see the fruit yet, but heaven does. Pastor Bill will tell you today that God measures faithfulness, not flash. Every act of obedience echoes into eternity. So keep loving, serving, and trusting. In Christ, your labor is not in vain.
At first glance, the book of Ecclesiastes feels heavy, even depressing. Life is described as meaningless, repetitive, like chasing the wind. Everything seems futile: work, pleasure, wisdom, success. But that's the point. Ecclesiastes is showing us what life looks like when it's lived under the sun, without Jesus. You've probably felt that emptiness before, doing all the right things and still coming up hollow. Today, Pastor Bill will remind you that apart from Christ, nothing fully satisfies.

Overcoming Family Dysfunction Scripture: Genesis 37:20 ESV “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.””Family Dysfunction In This ChapterGenesis 37:4 (ESV) But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.Genesis 37:5 ESV “Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more.”Genesis 37:8 ESV “His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.”Genesis 37:11 “And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.”Genesis 37:18 ESV “They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him.”Genesis 37:20 ESV “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.””Genesis 37:23-24 ESV “So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.”Genesis 37:26-27 ESV “Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him.”Genesis 37:31-33 ESV “Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. And they sent the robe of many colors and brought it to their father and said, “This we have found; please identify whether it is your son's robe or not.” And he identified it and said, “It is my son's robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.””Generational Dysfunction Before This Chapter1. Abraham's GenerationDeception/Lying: Abraham twice claimed his wife, Sarah, was only his sister out of fear for his own life, putting Sarah in danger (Genesis 12:10–20; Genesis 20:1–18).Sexual Sin/Lack of Faith: Sarah encouraged Abraham to sleep with her maidservant, Hagar, to produce an heir, an act outside of God's original plan for marriage, leading to significant strife (Genesis 16).2. Isaac's GenerationFavoritism: Both Isaac and Rebekah practiced favoritism toward their sons, which laid the foundation for future division and conflict in the family.Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed his wild game, while Rebekah loved Jacob (Genesis 25:28).3. Jacob's GenerationDeception/Lying: Rebekah and Jacob conspired to deceive Isaac, who was old and blind, so that Jacob could steal the spiritual and material blessing intended for his older brother, Esau (Genesis 27).Sibling Rivalry/Malice: The deception led to intense hatred, causing Esau to vow to kill Jacob, forcing Jacob to flee the land (Genesis 27:41).4. Jacob (Israel)'s Sons' GenerationViolence and Malice: Simeon and Levi committed a treacherous act of murder against the entire male population of Shechem in revenge for the rape of their sister, Dinah (Genesis 34). Jacob later condemned their anger and violence on his deathbed (Genesis 49:5–7).Sexual Sin/Violation of Authority: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, slept with his father's concubine, Bilhah. This gross violation of patriarchal authority and sexual purity resulted in him losing his preeminence and birthright (Genesis 35:22; Genesis 49:3–4).Favoritism, Hatred, and Violence:Jacob repeated the sin of his parents by practicing blatant favoritism, loving Joseph more than his other sons and giving him the famous "robe of many colors" (Genesis 37:3).The brothers' jealousy and hatred grew, leading them to plot to kill Joseph and ultimately selling him into slavery to passing traders (Genesis 37:4, 18–28).Deception/Lying: To conceal their crime, the brothers dipped Joseph's robe in goat's blood and lied to their father, causing him prolonged grief (Genesis 37:31–35).Deception and Sexual Sin (Judah): Judah, one of the brothers, had his own history of sexual sin when he mistakenly slept with his widowed daughter-in-law, Tamar, who disguised herself as a prostitute after he had refused to give her his third son in marriage (Genesis 38).DYSFUNCTION: Misalignment With God's WordWe All Unknowingly Grow Up In A Level Of DysfunctionWe Recognize It When It “Gets On Us”We Struggle To Recognize When It “Gets In Us”Part Of Discipleship Is The Transformation Of Our DysfunctionOvercoming Family Dysfunction: Live In The WordThe Word Brings Spiritual Life - Matthew 4:3–4 (ESV) And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.' ”Manna - Exodus 16:19–21 (ESV) And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. The Word Reveals Dysfunction Within You - James 1:23–25 (ESV) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.Following Jesus, some of it will just fall offThe Word will reveal a manageable load at a time that is still attacjedDaily reading is like the finest of sandpaper - it hurts lessBeing in a Bible preaching/teaching church will expose chunksPodcasts/Books will help to fine tuneThe Word Reveals Dysfunction Around You - Hebrews 4:12–13 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. More than 150 students walked out of Forney and North Forney high schools Thursday to protest the ongoing immigration crackdown in American cities. The protest was the latest in a series of walkouts in schools across Texas. In other news, on weekends for more than five years, volunteers at the East Plano Islamic Center better known as EPIC, have braved wind, cold and, recently, heckling protesters to pass out boxes of food to a long line of expectant cars; the Mavericks made another move before the trade deadline, sending recently acquired Malaki Branham to Charlotte for Tyus Jones. And about 300 goats were deployed Thursday by the city to White Rock Lake to take on their newest assignment: eating invasive plants near the Bath House Cultural Center. This gross violation of patriarchal authority and sexual purity resulted in him losing his preeminence and birthright (Genesis 35:22; Genesis 49:3–4).Favoritism, Hatred, and Violence:Jacob repeated the sin of his parents by practicing blatant favoritism, loving Joseph more than his other sons and giving him the famous "robe of many colors" (Genesis 37:3).The brothers' jealousy and hatred grew, leading them to plot to kill Joseph and ultimately selling him into slavery to passing traders (Genesis 37:4, 18–28).Deception/Lying: To conceal their crime, the brothers dipped Joseph's robe in goat's blood and lied to their father, causing him prolonged grief (Genesis 37:31–35).Deception and Sexual Sin (Judah): Judah, one of the brothers, had his own history of sexual sin when he mistakenly slept with his widowed daughter-in-law, Tamar, who disguised herself as a prostitute after he had refused to give her his third son in marriage (Genesis 38).Can You Identify Family Dysfunction On/In HYou?Affectionless RelationshipsDemeaning CommentsParents Who Undermine One AnotherPoor Financial DecisionsAddictions That Rob The FamilyViolenceHelicopter Parents"Hard times create strong men. Episode SummaryIn this deeply moving episode of Journey of Hope, host Elio Constantine launches a new mini-series with a powerful conversation titled “Who Is Your Enemy?” Joined by Dr. Yasser Eric, a bishop within the Global Anglican Church and a former radical Sunni Muslim, the episode explores the biblical meaning of enemies and Christ's radical call to love them.Dr. Yasser Eric shares his extraordinary testimony of growing up in Sudan within a fanatical Muslim environment marked by generational hatred toward Christians and others deemed “different.” As a teenager, he was immersed in extremist ideology that glorified violence and dehumanized perceived enemies. This indoctrination culminated in a brutal attack on a Christian classmate named Zakaria, whom Dr. Yasser Eric nearly killed—believing at the time he was serving God.Everything changed when Dr. Yasser Eric encountered Jesus through the compassion and prayers of Christians he once hated. While visiting a hospital, he witnessed two believers praying with love and authority over a dying child—an experience that revealed to him a God of mercy, intimacy, and grace. That moment marked the beginning of his transformation, leading him to faith in Christ at the age of 19, estrangement from his family, imprisonment, and eventually a calling to ministry. The episode reaches a profound climax when Dr. Yasser Eric recounts a later encounter with Zakaria—the very man he had attacked—who reveals that he had been praying for him all those years. This moment powerfully illustrates Jesus' command to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” showing that transformation is only possible through Christ's love, not human strength. This episode challenges listeners to confront cycles of hatred, reject violence, and embrace the reconciling power of prayer and forgiveness. It sets the tone for the mini-series by reminding us that the true enemy is not flesh and blood—and that loving our enemies is one of the clearest reflections of Jesus in us.Show Notes: Biblically, enemies are not merely people who annoy or oppose usScripture teaches that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6)Hatred is often inherited, taught, and normalized across generationsThe Danger of Religious ExtremismReligion without Christ can fuel violence and dehumanizationFaith can become dangerous when it is disconnected from love and truthViolence always produces more violence—never peaceThe Power of Prayer and CompassionTwo Christians praying for a dying child changed Dr. Yasser Eric's life foreverCompassion revealed a God who is personal, loving, and nearPrayer became the instrument God used to transform an enemy into a discipleLoving Your Enemy: A Gospel CommandJesus' command to love enemies is impossible without HimForgiveness and love are not human achievements but divine workZakaria's prayers broke a generational cycle of hatredA Life Transformed by ChristFrom persecutor to pastorFrom hatred to reconciliationFrom enemy to brother in ChristDr. Yasser Eric now leads a global movement of Muslim-background believers spanning over 80 countries, bearing witness to the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.
The World's Hatred For Christians - 30-Day Gospel Reading Challenge - Day 23 (John 15:18-27) by Shawn Ozbun
TItle: Sanctified HatredIntroduction: In a world where love is often celebrated, the concept of "Sanctified Hatred" might seem paradoxical. Yet, in this episode, Robert Militello invites us to explore the depths of divine justice, challenging us to understand the balance between God's love and His righteous judgment.Understanding Sanctified Hatred: Robert Militello opens the study by addressing the uncomfortable yet crucial topic of eternal torment. He emphasizes that understanding God's justice requires a willingness to confront difficult truths, such as the existence of hell and the nature of divine punishment.Theological Insights: Drawing from scripture, brother Militello presents theological arguments that highlight the necessity of justice in the divine order. He explains that God's hatred is not born out of malice but is a response to sin, a necessary counterpart to His love.Balancing Love and Justice: The episode delves into the balance between love and justice, urging listeners to reflect on their own beliefs. Militello argues that to truly love what God loves, one must also hate what He hates, a concept that challenges modern perceptions of morality. Conclusion: As the episode concludes, listeners are left with a profound understanding of the complexities of divine justice. Militello's insights encourage a deeper reflection on the nature of God.Send us a textEmail us at thatsinthebible@gmail.comWebsite: thatsinthebible.comOur podcast theme song "Jesus Is Coming Soon", courtesy of His Reflection a Gospel Quartet from Buckley Road Baptist Church, Liverpool, NY.

EMOTIONAL DETACHMENT AND THE COURAGE TO PIVOT Colleague Admiral James Stavridis. The Admiral emphasizes emotional detachment in leadership, using The Godfather as an analogy for not letting hatred cloud judgment. He critiques Bill Halsey for letting a rivalry with Spruance drive him into a trap at Leyte Gulf. Stavridis also explores the willingness to change plans, illustrating this with Stephen Decatur, who intended to steal the Philadelphiabut burned it when discovered. He reiterates that rational decision-making is vital even when it resembles surrender, as with Lloyd Bucher, challenging "Old Navy" views by asserting there is no shame in surrendering when resistance is impossible.
