Sin is terrible. Like a disease, it will corrupt, blind, and inhibit us in our walk with the Lord. If we are to be faithful and fruitful, we must, by the Spirit, put to death the sin that still remains in our life. In this sermon we talk about WHY we must do that, and HOW we do that, so that we can be the servants God calls us to.
John Owen famously said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” The war with sin connects us with all people of all times, because the sin problem is timeless and universal. None of our technological advances have fixed our sinful nature, guilty conscience, or separation from God. What makes Romans relevant today is that it speaks to this seemingly impossible issue. The key to killing sin lies in answering this question: Who is King of your life?Take-Home Question: I cannot kill sin without a new King. The War Against Sin (12-13)The War: Between God and SinThe Battleground: Your BodyThe OptionsPresent your members to sin as weapons of unrighteousnessPresent your members to God as weapons of righteousnessThe Question: Who is King?God's Victory Over Sin (14)Living in God's Victory Over Sin Reject sin's reign by treasuring God (12).Resist the body's sinful desires (12).Run toward righteousness (13).Remember whose you are (14).
Can We Really Overcome Sin? (Romans 6:1–16) - Dr. T. J. Betts
Paul anticipates that there will be those who seek to take advantage of God's grace by continuing in their sin. But he adamantly states that Christians should not continue in sin because they have been set free from the power of sin through their union with Christ in his death and resurrection. As such, their old life is dead and they have been given a brand new life. From that foundational union with Christ, Christians must now fight against sin by remembering who they are, by refusing to submit to sin's power, and by resting in God's grace.

Romans 1–5 communicates the radical truth that, by faith in Christ's righteousness alone, apart from any works of our own, we have been declared right with God. Paul ends Romans 5 in the clearest terms possible: “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Rom. 5:20). Not only is this teaching controversial, it is dangerous. Why? Because some may assert that it leads to rampant sinning. However, Paul answers such misunderstandings. To those who would assert, “Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?” Paul responds with the strongest Greek negative available: “By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”Take-Home Message: In Christ, I am dead to sin.In Christ, I am dead to the pattern of sin (1–4).In Christ, I am dead to the position of sin (5).In Christ, I am dead to the power of sin (6–7).Take-Home Lessons:In Christ, my pattern is replacing sin's lies with God's Word.In Christ, my position is not sinner but saint. In Christ, my power is God's justification.
Introduction Why should I care about the consequences of sin? 1. The Death of Jeroboam's Son (v1-20) 2. The Bankruptcy of Rehoboam's Reign (v11-22) 3. The Consequences of Sin (Romans 1:21-32) Conclusion Sin is a miserable business. We should care about sin because God hates sin, and he will not leave any sin unpunished. How then should we live? Remember we are all sinners. So, stay humble and prayerful. Pray for one another. Although we are all sinners, God still cares for us; and he has given us the means to take up the fight against sin. Pray that God will 'Deliver us from evil.' Don't hide the truth. Secrecy is one of Satan's biggest weapons. Don't hide in the shadows. Keep putting sin to death in your own life. Know yourself. Know your weaknesses and know your times of temptation. Flee from sin! Strive to be holy, as God has called you to be.
Breaking the Chain of Sin Romans 8:12-17 12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Christ changes us when He sends us the Holy Spirit. I. Life in the Spirit brings freedom from sin. II. Life in the Spirit brings sonship. III. Life in the Spirit brings an inheritance.
May 3 – Part Four: Come to Save Us from Sin (Romans 3, Ephesians 2) We don't like the word “sin.” It sounds way too judgmental. It makes us think of legalistic people, hypocrisy, and everything we don't like about religion and church. While most people don't claim to be perfect, few are willing to embrace the title of “sinner.” We may be willing to admit a “mistake,” but we are reluctant to say that we have “sinned.” The problem with the word “mistake” is that it is insufficient to describe our problem. You make a mistake on a math test. Mistakes are easy to fix, but what do we do about the problem of sin? Join us for part four of 30 Words where we will learn the good news that Jesus came to save us from sin.

If we're saved by grace, what do we do about sin? In Romans 6, we're reminded that we didn't just get forgiven—we died with Christ and were raised to a new life. This week, Pastor Korey challenges us to live in that freedom, showing that grace doesn't excuse sin, it breaks its power and calls us to something greater.

Pastor Mac provides an expositional style teaching of Romans CH 3:9-20 looking into the final portion of section 2 of the book of Romans that capstones the total depravity of man. This teaching will define what total depravity means, as well as examine how the apostle Paul uses a God ordained method to quote the Old Testament from various places. In addition, we will explore portions of the psalms that are quoted in order to contrast how we should be in our walk as Christians, knowing that without the righteousness of God, all of humanity remains under sin.Social MediaProphecy Website: http://JDFarag.orgMobile & TV Apps: https://subsplash.com/calvarychapelkaneohe/appChurch Website: http://www.calvarychapelkaneohe.comX: https://x.com/JDFaragFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/JDFaragInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/JDFarag

Paul asks the question every critic of grace loves to throw: If we're saved by free grace and not by law-keeping, why not just keep sinning? In this final B-Sides of the year, Pastor Jon and Pastor Rusten dive into Romans 6 and show why the answer is a resounding “By no means!” Union with Christ's death and resurrection, the end of slavery to sin, and the myth of neutrality all show that grace doesn't permit sin—it kills it. Merry Christmas, everyone! We hope you enjoy, and as usual, if you have any questions for Sermon B-Sides or anything else, email us at pastor@coramdeochurch.org.
What does it mean that whatever is not of faith is sin? What is the meaning of Romans 14:23?
Summary In this sermon from Romans 7:7–13, Dr. Michael Easley unpacks one of Scripture's most complex questions: If God's law is good, why does it seem to lead us into sin? Paul reminds us that the problem isn't the law—it's the sin within us. God's law is holy, righteous, and good, but sin twists what is good into an opportunity for rebellion. Dr. Easley outlines seven functions of the law, revealing that while the law defines and exposes sin, it cannot save us from it. The law condemns, provokes, and reveals the depth of our sinfulness, pointing us instead to our desperate need for Christ. No set of rules or moral codes can make us good; only intimacy with Jesus transforms the heart. When we seek fulfillment in Him rather than in the false promises of the world—whether through lust, greed, or pride—sin loses its grip. Dr. Easley reminds us that the Christian life isn't about trying harder to stop sinning; it's about walking more closely with Christ. Only when He becomes our “all in all” can we find the true freedom the law could never provide. Takeaways God's law is holy, righteous, and good—but sin twists it into an opportunity for rebellion. The law reveals sin's power but cannot save us from it. No number of rules can make us righteous; only Christ can transform the heart. Sin deceives and provokes, taking what is good and turning it against us. True freedom comes not from resisting sin but from pursuing intimacy with Jesus Christ. When Christ becomes our all in all, the world's temptations lose their hold. To read the book of Romans, click here. Click here for other Michael Easley Sermons.
This is Romans Part 2: The Gospel – The New Humanity (Romans 5–8). In these chapters, Paul shows how the good news of Jesus doesn't just pardon sinners—it creates a whole new humanity. Romans: Sin Dwells Within You and Drives You to More SinText: Romans 7:18-20Outline: A. Desire but no ability.B. Continuing to do evil. C. The fount of sin.
Summary In this sermon, Dr. Michael Easley unpacks Romans 6, where Paul addresses a dangerous misunderstanding of grace: if God's grace abounds where sin abounds, should we continue sinning so grace may increase? Paul's emphatic answer is, “May it never be!” Believers are not free to sin, but free from sin. Through Christ's death and resurrection, Christians are united with Him—baptized into His death, buried with Him, raised with Him, and called to walk in newness of life. Death in Scripture signifies separation, and for the believer, it means separation from sin's controlling power. Though temptation remains, sin no longer rules our lives. Dr. Easley also explores baptism, clarifying that it is not a requirement for salvation but a faithful response of identification with Christ. Grace is never meant to be exploited as permission to sin. Instead, it should fuel our gratitude and obedience. Ultimately, Paul's charge is clear: we are dead to sin but alive in Christ. Grace is not for sin-negotiation—it is the foundation for grateful living. Our lives should reflect not a return to the sewer of sin, but the newness of life Christ has secured for us. Takeaways Grace is not an excuse for sin but the reason believers live differently. Death in Scripture signifies separation—believers are separated from sin's power. Baptism identifies believers with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Justification and reconciliation are God's work alone; we cannot add to them. Sanctification is the lifelong process of becoming more like Christ and less like Adam. Walking in newness of life is better than trying not to sin—it is living gratefully in Christ. In this sermon, Pastor Christopher talks about the Good News for us, three certainties about the Gift of Christ, and how His gift covers our sins completely. He shares with us how Jesus' act of grace is more potent than Adam's act of sin. Finally, he talks about how Adam's act of sin led to condemnation, and how we depend on Christ for our redemption. Summary In this sermon, Dr. Michael Easley teaches from Romans 5, unpacking the sobering truth that through Adam's sin, death entered the world and spread to all humanity. Drawing from the historical use of primers and catechisms in early American education, Dr. Easley illustrates how generations once clearly taught the doctrine of original sin. Today, however, our culture resists the very concept of sin, preferring to redefine or dismiss it altogether. Yet Scripture is clear: sin is not simply a collection of bad choices but a condition that rules, spreads, and ultimately kills. Dr. Easley explains the imputation of sin and contrasts differing theological views, emphasizing that in Adam, all humanity fell, but in Christ, believers are given life. Sin's pervasiveness demonstrates our desperate need for redemption. The either/or reality Paul presents is simple but profound: we are either in Adam, under the curse of sin and death, or in Christ, where His one act of righteousness secures eternal life. The good news is that through faith in Christ alone, we are no longer condemned but made right with God. Only in Christ can the guilt of sin be removed and the gift of eternal life received. Takeaways Through Adam's sin, death entered the world and spread to all humanity. Our culture resists the concept of sin, but Scripture affirms its power and pervasiveness. Sin is not just an action—it is a condition that controls, spreads, and kills. Theological views may differ, but Romans 5 is clear: in Adam, all sinned. In Christ, believers receive the imputation of righteousness and the gift of eternal life. The gospel's hope is simple: we are either in Adam under death, or in Christ under grace.
