On January 1845, the state legislature repealed the Nauvoo Charter, leaving the Mormon city without a secular government nor any military protection. One of those indicted for the murder of Joseph and Hyrum was Senator Jacob C. Davis, but he never winced under the charges, although he, too, had played his part in the deed. Again, on October 29, 1845, Governor Ford sent a letter to the leaders in Nauvoo in which he told them to leave Illinois rather than to stay there in a continual war–as he was to willing to offer them any protection. So in the dead cold of winter nearly 20,000 Mormons began to move westward beyond the boundaries of the United States. As they made their journey, however, the government interfered again. Another political edict demanded that 500 Mormon recruits help in fighting a war for them. If they refused, an army would be sent out to destroy the Saints. And this was happening in America?! The Saints were being driven out of the United States by its politicians; yet at the same time these kingcrafters were enlisting the able-bodied and much needed Mormon men to go fight a war for the very country that was expelling them. On this episode, we give Willard Richards his very own NaMo Nickname and read his whitewashed history of Jo’s arrest and court hearing in June of 1841. Jo had found some way to squirrel himself out from under nearly every legal trouble with which he was accused since he’d started the religion 11 years prior to this and his lawyers saw it fit to stick with the trend. We discuss how the trial of the prophet was seen by local periodicals and the Warsaw Signal’s reaction to the increasing political power wielded by Jo and the church. After that we have on Gottfried to discuss Isaiah in the Book of Mormon from a nuanced perspective and finish up with a very brief listener mail segment spurring a much-needed correction. On this week’s episode, we read through a bunch of the first revelation Joseph Smith gave in Nauvoo that made it into the D&C, section 124. Since the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, the Mormons could finally rest easy that they wouldn’t be chased out of Illinois after living there a year like had happened in Missouri, so they set up camp. By that, I mean, Jo gave a revelation dictating the organization of Nauvoo to build it up, starting with the most important parts, like building a house for Jo and his family. Section 124 has a bunch of important names in it so we review most of the names and why they’re relevant as we move through the revelation. After that, Nauvoo holds its first election in February of 1840, electing John Wreck-it Bennett to the office of Mayor and various church elites to the offices of aldermen and councilors. Jo finally had a legally sanctioned theocracy with no looming threat of a Missouri militia to come and take it away like 2 years ago. On this episode, we finally introduce someone who’s been long overdue for our historical timeline, Heber C. Kimball, maybe you guys can help me come up with a fitting NaMo nickname for him. After that we jump into a letter Bennett wrote to the brethren to be published in the Times and Season stating the Nauvoo Charter had finally passed the Illinois State Legislature. Bennett was a powerful lobbyist and ally to have on the Mormons’ side, and he specifically called out a few government officials who were paramount to the Charter’s success. Then we find out that God gave a sign in the heavens to the Mormon missionaries in England, signaling the passing of the Nauvoo Charter, legends are born easily but never die. After that, we’re joined by a special guest who recently dove really deep into the BoM to try and make sense of it all. On this episode, Jo, Bennett (Brokeit), and Thompson, join forces to draft the Nauvoo Charter for approval by the Illinois State Legislature. We read right through the whole thing because that’s how we roll on this show. The Charter was essentially a copy and paste of the Springfield City Charter, but there were a few subtle additions which enshrined the city of Nauvoo as a sanctuary to Jo and the Mormons, and created a separate military arm, the Nauvoo Legion, as the law enforcement agency through which Jo exercised nothing short of martial law under the banner of his newly founded theocracy. Jo was untouchable.
