In this episode, Brent Wheat and Roy Huntington discuss the relevance and advantages of pistol caliber carbines (PCCs) in today's firearms landscape. They explore their effectiveness for home defense, the importance of training, and the simplicity of operation that makes them suitable for novice shooters. The conversation also touches on real-world experiences with firearms, the significance of choosing the right weapon for self-defense, and the need for ongoing practice and familiarity with firearms. Takeaways Pistol caliber carbines can be polarizing in the shooting community. They are often overlooked in favor of short-barreled AR platforms. PCCs can be effective for home defense, especially for novices. Shooting a PCC at night can be less disorienting than other firearms. Training and familiarity with firearms are crucial for effective use. Real-world experiences highlight the effectiveness of PCCs in various situations. Choosing the right firearm should consider comfort and ease of use. Simplicity in firearm operation is essential for self-defense situations. It's important to focus on training rather than just the firearm itself EPISODE SPONSOR The Guns Podcast is presented by Ruger Firearms. Shooting Training and Optics Discussion The hosts announced upcoming training events in Texas and Nevada, promoting classes in pistol and rifle fundamentals. They discussed the benefits of using optics like the EOTech for better visibility and accuracy, especially for those with aging eyes or vision issues. The conversation touched on personal experiences with shooting and the advantages of using modern sights compared to traditional iron sights. EOTech Optics Vision Issues The discussion centered around the use of EOTech optics, particularly a story about a military language specialist with macular degeneration who qualified with an M4 rifle using an EOTech HWS, demonstrating how the optic improved her vision enough to pass qualification. Brand Loyalty and Wildlife Safety The discussion focused on the decline of brand loyalty in the shooting sports industry due to corporate consolidations, with dad expressing concern about companies being bought up and then discarded. The conversation then shifted to a story about Cornell University students in New York who killed and brought a bear into their dorm for processing, which led to a discussion about proper wildlife handling and safety protocols. Crime and Law Enforcement Challenges Recent incidents of violent crime in New York and Chicago, highlighting how repeat offenders continue to commit crimes despite numerous arrests. They emphasized that progressive policies, such as no-bail laws and criticism of the police, may be contributing to increased violence, while lawful citizens are increasingly forced to defend themselves. Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan give their final thoughts on the Atlanta Falcons' home matchup with the Washington Commanders on Sunday, let you hear some of what ESPN NFL analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky had to say about Falcons' quarterback Michael Penix Jr. struggling with his footwork right now when he joined Chris Thomas tonight last night, react to what Orlovsky had to say, explain why they think It's possible that the pistol formation could be throwing off Michael Penix Jr.'s timing with his wide receivers, give their final thoughts on the Georgia versus Alabama game tomorrow, and then close out hour three by diving into the life of Beau “Squidbilly” Morgan in The Life of Squid!
Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan spend some time with former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, and now analyst for the Atlanta Falcons Radio Network Dave Archer! Mike, Beau, and Dave discuss how the Falcons prevent one bad loss from turning into two bad losses, if Dave thinks being in the pistol formation or shotgun formation a lot promotes bad footwork for quarterbacks, being in the pistol formation having nothing to do with running backs being able to or not being able to press the hole, Falcons' Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson saying he might need to simplify the offense for Michael Penix Jr., how the Commanders' offense changes if Jayden Daniels is playing quarterback versus if Marcus Mariota is playing quarterback, how Dave thinks Commanders' Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will try to attack Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich and the Falcons' defense and how he thinks Commanders' Defensive Coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. will try to attack Zac Robinson and the Falcons' offense, and how he's feeling about Team U.S.A's chances in the Ryder Cup
In the 3rd hour of today's show, the guys discuss Dan Orlovsky's comments about the regression of Michael Penix in the pistol. Barbara Dooley joins and chats about how Bama is Kirby Smart's last hurdle to establish dominance in CFB.
Carl and Mike briefly discuss their conversation with Barbara Dooley as they share thoughts on her comments in regards to stating it will be important for Georgia to not allow themselves to fall behind against Alabama on Saturday. They then get back to Falcons talk and share thoughts on why they believe if the Falcons are going to continue to run out of the pistol, they need more creativity in play calls.
Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac let you hear Atlanta Falcons Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson talk about the starting point of the running back in the pistol, and external critics saying his offense is predictable. Mike, Beau, and Ali react to what Robinson had to say, and explain why they think the pistol formation is not the Falcons' offense's problem, it's how Zac Robinson is utilizing it.
NFL Insider Mark Schlereth speaks about his assessment after re-watching the Falcons-Panthers, his thoughts on the use of the pistol formation, what he noticed about the Washington Commanders while calling their game, some of the accuracy issues with Bo Nix in Denver, and Jaxson Dart replacing Russell Wilson.
