This past Monday morning 20-year-old George Obregon Jr. approached rapper Nardo Wick after Wick's performance at a Tampa night club, for the purpose of asking if he could take a photo with the rapper. Robin was Born in Farnham, Surrey, UK. Following a divorce from his birth father, his mother Hazel married his step-father, who adopted him and gave him the name Horsfall. A broken family life adversely affected his education, so he left school in 1972 at the age of fifteen and joined the army as a boy soldier.Despite a long period of isolation and bullying by his peers, he became a full member of the Parachute Regiment in 1974 and served three tours of Northern Ireland. In 1978 he volunteered for SAS selection and passed on his second attempt in March 1979. He went on to qualify as a Paramedic and Sniper.He was a member of the SAS counter terrorist team that assaulted the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, helping to rescue the nineteen hostages who had been held for six days.Robin has had an extraordinary life and has been speaking about it at events both small and large for over 10 years. It is horror season on our book club podcast, so it is horror manga time! Today's manga is about a pet shop in Chinatown, where the mysterious manager sells mythical creatures and cryptids for pets, but the people who get their pets here cannot help but see these creatures as more human than animal; a mistake that will lead them to their downfall! The grandson to Count D, (who we shall just call D for now) is a mysterious, somewhat effeminate, and eccentric person who acts as the store manager whilst the count is away on business. When the wealthier clientele ask for exotic and rare pets D takes them to the back and sells them cryptids and strange supernatural, sometimes mythological creatures that resemble humans. But before he sells them D has them sign a contract with specific clauses. Something more akin to rules that if broken have dire consequences that D himself refuses to be liable for, but D will on occasion offer advice to those who are troubled enough to have broken them.   Often the rules come in threes, with one mostly telling owners only to feed their pets with fresh water and vegetables, but a rule that almost always occurs tells them to never show their pets to anyone.   Each chapter tells a tale about the owners that sometimes revolves around a moral. Such as the husband and wife who buy what D claims to be a rabbit, which then replaces their dead daughter. Only for their parents to repeat the same behaviour that led to their daughter's demise.   After numerous episodes of owners losing control of their so-called pets; it sparks an investigation from the detective, Leon Orcolt, whom suspects D of using the petshop as a front for drug or human trafficking but Little does the detective know about the surreal nature of the monsters inside the shop.   ·       Petshop of Horror being a Josei manga, not shojo, implies it is a story for women and not young girls (perhaps young adult, teen audience) Tokyopop publishing gave it 13+ age rating.   ·       Originally published 1996 in Japan and 2003 in English by Tokyopop, although today Tokyopop is known for its Disney Licenses and manga aimed at young girls, the publishers have not been the same since losing the License to Kodansha manga in 2008, with Kodansha seizing control of their English publication instead of outsourcing it through Tokyopop.   ·       The spin offs/sequels to the manga include shin petshop (2005), Passage-Hen (2013) and Ark Adrift (2018) It had a short 4-episode anime adaptation in 1999 by the Production studio Madhouse. At the time of this podcast episode being uploaded, Petshop of Horrors: Ark Adrift is still being made, with Akino Matsuri having worked continuously on the franchise from its inception.   ·       Episodic stories only work when focused on character, but you can also have the recurring character fit into a basic monomyth like template and just have your recurring character take a base role. In this case D is almost always the supernatural aide or the sage role. As the pets he gives are guised in being remedial to the episodic character's problems but are in fact tests of character.   ·       Episodic plots tend to have a gimmick in this case, it is the pet which acts as a monster of the week plot.   ·       Female power fantasy aimed at a more adult audience tends to have men be servents to the female protagonist and the male figure is an extension of the woman's power and influence. The woman is defined by her cabality, or lack of cabality to romantically love such a character whilst maintaining power and influence. At the time of the manga's release the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner movie, The Bodyguard (1992) was popular. That movie is also like the relationship dynamic seen in Chapter 4 with Dreizhein (a.k.a. Dora-Chan) and Karen. At first Karen feels disrespected and being overly protected by Dreizhen she feels her identity and independency as a mature woman is threatened, Dreizhein is a sexual threat since he is an overprotective man. In such stories the woman learns to accept the man, love him, and trust him, whilst at the same time another suitor betrays her trust. And as often the case, the mythical protector is unable to or at least struggles to love the woman back as it creates fear in the man that it will diminish his ability as a bodyguard.  Sometime, in love stories targeted to males, the male figure is only around long enough that so the woman can learn something about herself and the male then goes on to new adventures. Petshop of Horrors has a more fairy tale approach. By having the man become a literal doberman dog by the end of the story the male figure loses their sexuality, it is as if the woman has tamed the man, but only after eliminating all her threats. The bodyguard is no longer seen as a sexual threat and the woman remains virginal for the time being, or at the very least remains motherly to her new pet who has saved her life.       ·       The store manager has his own animal companion named Q-Chan. Q-Chan is a Wolperdinger (written as Valvertinger in the 2003 English Tokyopop translation). This animal is from German folklore and is a hybrid of a squirrel or rabbit combined with horns and wings. Interestingly Q-Chan looks more like Moogles (or Mogs) from the Final Fantasy videogames, due to having bat like wings. An American version of this creature is the jackelope, a jackrabbit with antelope horns, and unlike deer, antelope do not shed their horns. Hunters and Taxidermists have made ornamental Jackelopes and Wolperdinger. So just because you see one stuffed and on the shelf of a pub does not make them real.   ·       One of the pets is a reference to Medusa of Greek myth, Medusa was cursed for her vanity, when the jealous goddess Athena decided to make it so that Medusa's gaze could turn people into stone. One interpretation could say she was cursed with good looks prior to this, as to not blame Medusa since in myth she did not accept the advances of the god Poseidon. Now Medusa is seen as a feminist symbol of female rage. Her head is used as an apotropaic symbol (a magical charm to ward off threats) especially on the accessories by Versace.   ·       Alice is named after the protagonist of Lewis Carol's “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” Notable for entering a surreal world by chasing a white rabbit.   ·       Dreizhein (Dora-Chan) has his ears clipped and explains this is standard procedure for those who serve the military (he never explains more than that). There is a history with Doberman dogs being cosmetically altered, having their tails surgically shortened and their ears cut. On today's Zero Limits Podcast I chat with Taylor Cavanaugh former US Navy and current French Foreign Legionnaire.Taylor had his sights set on becoming a seal at a young age however getting in trouble with the law on multiple occasions which attended a recruiting station and was refused to enlist. To expedite the probation process he spent 4 months in a penitentiary and after completing his time he was allowed to join the Navy.Completing BUD/s and SQT class 284, graduating Jul 2011 serving 7 years as a US Navy Seal posting to Seal Team 7 with deployments Mexico, Yemen and Iraq. He also qualified as a Sniper, JTAC, Comms, Advent Laden SME. However his seal career was turbulent with brushes with the law and eventually being discharged after being caught using performance enhancing drugs. After struggling with mental health and contemplating taking his life, Taylor decided to get his life back on track he took a flight to Paris and joined the French Foreign Legion in 2019 which he is still currently serving out his 5 year contract. "Back to Black" brachte Amy Winehouse den internationalen Durchbruch. In ihrem zweiten Studioalbum kehrt sie ihr Innerstes nach außen und berührt damit die Menschen. "Back to Black" ist in Europa am 21. November 2006 herausgekommen und stürmte im darauffolgenden Jahr die Albumcharts in Deutschland, Österreich, der Schweiz und natürlich auch im Vereinigten Königreich. Bislang hat es sich weltweit weit über 20 Millionen Mal verkauft und wurde 2008 bei den Grammy Awards als bestes Gesangsalbum ausgezeichnet. Am 14. September 2023 wäre Amy Winehouse 40 Jahre alt geworden. Willensstärke gepaart mit dem Hang zur Selbstzerstörung Mit gerade mal 19 Jahren unterschreibt sie ihren ersten Plattenvertrag bei Islands Records. Endlich kann sie sich eine eigene Wohnung nehmen. Bis dahin hat sie bereits viele Schulen durchlaufen und massive Probleme damit gehabt, sich in diese Art von Korsett einzufügen. Darunter auch die anerkannte Musikschule "London Bridge School of Music", auf der beispielsweise auch Adele war. Doch Amy Winehouse war trotz aller Schwiergikeiten eine ambitionierte, sehr willensstarke Frau. 2003 kommt ihr Debütalbum "Frank" auf den Markt und erreicht auf Anhieb Platz 3 der britischen Charts. Doch mit zunehmendem Erfolg kommt der Druck und mit dem Druck kommt das Elend in Form von Alkohol. Erfolg, Alkohol und eine verletzte Seele Dieses Debüt ebnet den Weg für Amys persönliche Katastrophe, von der sie in "Back to Black" erzählt. Auf dem Album kehrt sie ihr Innerstes nach außen und verarbeitet ihre seelischen Kummer. Sie ist bei ihrer Mutter großgeworden, ihr geliebter Vater verlässt die Familie für eine andere Frau als sie neun ist. Er hat sich eigentlich nicht für sie interessiert, es gab nur wenig Kontakt. Diesen Schmerz verwindet sie nie. Und dann verliebt sie sich in den vermeintlich Falschen: Blake Fielder-Civil. Er ist schwer drogenabhängig und liebt — genau wie Amy — den Alkohol. Allerdings ebenso Kokain, Heroin und Crack. Schließlich trennt er sich von ihr und sie stürzt heftig ab. All dies geschieht bereits im Vorfeld des Albums. Er hat sich von ihr per SMS getrennt, sie haben eigentlich nicht gesprochen. Blake ist damals zu seiner Freundin zurückgekehrt und Amy Winehouse zurück in den Sumpf der Drogen. Diesen Trennungsschmerz versucht sie im Song "Back to Black" zu verarbeiten. "They tried to make me go to Rehab, but I won't go" Ihre Freunde haben sie gerettet und ihr zu einer Entzugskur geraten. Sie überließ die Entscheidung ihrem Vater, doch er unterstütze sie nicht, ließ sie erneut im Stich und Amy verweigerte die Entzugsklinik. "I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine. They tried to make me go to Rehab, but I won't go, go, go." – Amy Winehouse "Rehab" Das vorerst neueste Mitglied im "Club 27" Mit Erscheinen des Albums wird Amy Winehouse plötzlich reich und berühmt, der Erfolgsdruck steigt ins Unermessliche. Die Zeit war geprägt von zahllosen Zusammenbrüchen und furchtbar peinlichen Auftritten unten Drogenkonsum. Auch ihre alte Liebe findet den Weg zurück in ihr Leben, Blake und Amy heiraten. Doch das Glück ist ihr leider nicht hold, keine zwei Jahre später lässt sie sich scheiden. Sie magert Dank Drogen und Alkohol immer weiter ab bis sie ihr Bodyguard am 23. Juli 2011 schließlich tot in ihrer Londoner Wohnung findet. Die Obduktion ergibt einen Alkoholwert von 4,1 Promille. Nach Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison und Kurt Cobain ist sie das vorerst letzte Promi-Mitglied im berühmten "Club 27" – dem Kreis der Weltstars, die mit 27 gestorben sind. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago and a fan of female pop vocalists, Miguel Ortuno made his way to the then-new Tower Records store in Bloomingdale, IL to purchase his very first CD, “The Bodyguard” soundtrack featuring his favorite female singer, Whitney Houston. It wasn't long after that Miguel applied for a job, was hired, and worked at the Bloomingdale location. Running the register, helping customers, and putting away product was a regular part of the job. But Miguel saw other opportunities at Tower. He became a Supervisor and helped out on some “A-Team” projects opening stores around the country. The man, Nicholas Coffey, 23, was caught on video driving the stolen car around Deltona, Florida. He was also seen making a purchase at a gas station in the stolen car. Coffey was arrested and charged with grand theft auto, among other charges. Delta Flight Has to Turn Around Because of Passenger Diarrhea A Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles had to turn around after a passenger had diarrhea in the aisle. The flight was about halfway to its destination when the incident occurred. The pilot announced that the flight was turning around and that passengers would be given a full refund. People Get Thrown Off After Have to Sit in Puke on an Air Canada Flight Several people were thrown off an Air Canada flight after they refused to sit in puke. The flight was from Toronto to Vancouver when a passenger vomited on the seat in front of them. The other passengers refused to sit in the puke, so the flight attendants had to find them new seats. The passengers who were thrown off the flight were later given a full refund. Pilot Crashes After Gender Reveal for Cartel in Mexico A pilot crashed a plane after he was distracted by a gender reveal party for a drug cartel in Mexico. The pilot was flying a small plane carrying drugs when he saw the gender reveal party below him. He became distracted and crashed the plane into a mountain. The pilot and all of the passengers were killed. Marathon Runner Arrested by Coast Guard After Running in Hampster Wheel in the Ocean A marathon runner was arrested by the Coast Guard after he ran in a hamster wheel in the ocean. The runner was participating in a challenge to run 100 miles in the ocean. He was arrested after he ran into a shipping lane and caused a hazard to other boats.
