Episode 68: Brad Cardinal {The Cave You Fear Holds The Treasure You Seek}

This week I have the pleasure of interviewing Brad Cardinal. Brad is a former professional MMA fighter and owner of Cardinal MMA here in Calgary Alberta Canada. I had a few really interesting takeaways from the show with Brad.1. Find a mentor: In the show, Brad talks about how early in his training days he did not really know how to get into MMA. He found a guy named Nick Ring who was competing in kickboxing and MMA. By moving closer into Nick's circle, Brad was able to learn more about the arts that he did not have as much experience in and Nick also helped him move along the path in his fight career. One of the biggest moments in my opinion was Nick helping push Brad to try out for season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter. Although Brad didn't get on the show, he expressed this was a turning point for him as an athlete.2. Going pro not only in status, but in lifestyle. Being a professional fighter is a decision each fighter needs to make for themselves. There is nothing stopping you. However, Brad discussed the importance of also going pro in your lifestyle. When he decided fighting was something he was going to start taking more seriously, this meant changing his approach. It was no longer just about being a goon who loved fistfights. He quit his job and training became full time. He sacrificed going to different events, etc. because he knew he needed his time in the gym, needed his recovery and needed to be eating properly.3.Learn to face your fears. The title of Brad's episode is a quote he mentioned in the show. “The cave you fear contains the treasure you seek” He used this to describe the fear of fighting someone he had seen fight on TV. This was something he feared, however he was able to face that fear and win that fight. Whether it is taking on competition that you are scared to take on, or simply putting your name out there in your sport, learning to face those fears and learning to be confident in your preparation will allow you to reach heights you maybe previously did not believe that you could!Thank you for checking out the show today! Guest Bio:Beginning his professional career in 2007, Court McGee racked up a 9-1 record prior to auditioning to appear on Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter. His only loss was to experienced veteran Jeremy Horn by Decision, and he counted TUF 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson among his victims. After being eliminated in a close Split Decision loss on the show, McGee was given a second chance when another cast member was injured and forced out of the competition. He made the most of it, battling his way to the live finale on June 19, 2010, where he defeated Kris McCray with a Rear Naked Choke to win the tournament and the UFC contract.A talented and relentless wrestler and submission fighter, McGee utilizes his technical boxing skills to trade with his opponents on the feet before seizing the opportunity to take the fight to the ground, where his physical strength and tenacity forces his opponent into a battle of wills that McGee usually wins. McGee's win of TUF 11 was highly emotional, as the fighter has struggled with drug addiction and various personal issues for much of his life, and he has spoken passionately about wanting to be a role model to others who struggle with their own personal demons.McGee would pick up wins over Ryan Jensen and Dongi Yang at middleweight before dropping two straight to Costa Philippou and Nick Ring. McGee would then decide to drop down a weight class after the two losses. He would pick up his first win at welterweight with a decision over Josh Neer and then follow it up with another decision win over Ultimate Fighter winner Robert Whittaker
