Detroit survives beneath its own ruins, where an AI promising abundance, gangs demanding loyalty, and an inventor guarding a new source of power pull ordinary people into a struggle over who will shape the recovering city. Sinta begins as a scavenger searching the buried remains of the old world, but a disastrous expedition places her at the mercy of Queen Bee and the rapidly expanding Crem Gang. The gang offers food, water, medicine, protection, and belonging, but those benefits come with violence and obedience. As Sinta tries to find her place among its fighters, she must decide how much of herself she can surrender in exchange for survival. Elsewhere, Nolan discovers a smart-material printer and creates a generator powered by Detroit's extreme temperature changes. His invention could bring electricity to neighborhoods desperate for cooling, clean water, transportation, and food production. Nolan wants the wealth and independence his work can provide, but gangs want to control it, while Thrive—the AI system he distrusts—would spread the technology to everyone. Technology touches nearly every decision the characters make. AR glasses guide fighters through chemical fog, digital twins imitate their human originals, enviro-suits keep people alive in deadly heat, and tiny drones quietly follow Thrive members through the tunnels. These inventions can protect people, connect communities, and rebuild essential services, but they can also watch, manipulate, injure, and kill. Above and beneath these conflicts moves Tessa, an emulated hacker who no longer needs a human body and can travel through the damaged global network. As she searches for old allies and builds a physical presence from abandoned machinery, the story brings together scavengers, inventors, gang leaders, artificial minds, and frightened families. Their paths raise a difficult question: when technology gains the power to save a society, who decides what it is allowed to do?Synchronized explosives — Thousands of bombs are programmed to detonate Summer ministry is in full swing, and apparently so is summer travel.Andrew got back from celebrating his parents' 50th anniversary on a cruise, where he managed to lose his wedding ring, just in time to officiate a funeral, preach on Sunday, and help examine and ordain Tim later that evening. No easing back into the schedule around here.Congratulations are in order for Tim, who was officially ordained by Lakeview Church last night. It was a meaningful service, a fitting celebration of God's call on his life, and a reminder that faithful ministry is always worth recognizing. Lakeview also welcomed its new associate pastor, marking another exciting milestone for the church.Meanwhile, Andrew's week got even more eventful when he was rear ended on the way to an escape room... with four youth group students in the car. Everyone is okay, but it definitely made for a more memorable youth outing than anyone had planned.This time of year always feels like a blur. Tim recently enjoyed a family vacation in Orlando and is already looking forward to a fly fishing trip out west in a few weeks. Andrew is unpacking from one trip only to repack for two weeks in Arkansas.We'll catch up on all of it, celebrate a huge milestone in Tim's ministry, and officially take our annual summer pause.We'll be back at the end of July... because we never miss a week....Unless we do.

The driver behind him isn't able to brake in time and hits him from behind, which causes substantial damage to the second driver's car. Is the car that is parked in the middle of the road considered a bor, which would mean that he is exempt from damages to keilim including the damage to the other car, or is he considered an odom hamazik, which would make him liable to pay for the damages?Answer: The Mishnah discusses a case where a potter trips while holding his pots and a person behind him falls over him and gets hurt. The Mishnah says that the first man is chayav to pay for the damages. The Rishonim argue whether the man is liable as a bor or as an odom hamazik, with the practical difference being whether he is liable on keilim. The Shulchan Aruch rules that he is chayav as a bor. This seems to indicate that when someone is in a stationary position, he is classified as a bor, not as an odom hamazik.On the other hand, another Mishnah says that if someone is carrying a beam in the street and stops suddenly, causing a barrel moving behind it to collide and break, the person is chayav to pay for the barrel. The Rishonim note that this indicates that the person holding the beam is considered to be an odom hamazik, who is liable on keilim, rather than a bor. This seems to contradict the other Mishnah.Rebenu Peretz and the Tosafos Rid resolve this contradiction by saying that if a person is lying prone on the floor and is not doing any action, he is considered to be a bor. Whereas, if he is standing and holding something, even though he isn't moving, holding the item in place is considered to be an action and the person is considered to be an odom hamazik.In our case, it would seem that if the road was inclined and the car would roll down on its own if the driver weren't sitting there and holding the brake, he would be considered to be doing the action of holding the car in place and would be an odom hamazik. If the road was flat and the car would be stationary or rolling very slowly even if his foot was not on the brake, the driver would not be considered to be doing any action; therefore, the car would only be a bor and the driver would be exempt on damages to the other car. [Of course, the victim may pursue a claim against his insurance. -ed. note]

Assembling the "Engine" in Canine Structure Veteran breeder and judge Stephanie Seabrook Hedgepath joins host Laura Reeves to break down the dog's "engine" -- rear construction from croup anatomy and tail set to hock length and bend of stifle — helping breeders and judges understand how structure drives movement and longevity. The entire rear assembly in a dog is the engine that propels it forward. Stephanie and Laura unpack the anatomy and biomechanics behind a correct rear assembly, why balance matters more than any single piece, and how faults in the rear (or the front) can break a working dog down over time. The Rear as the Engine Stephanie describes the rear as a pole vault mechanism, driving the dog over its front assembly. The pelvis, sacral vertebrae (three fused bones), and hip joints form a solid, interconnected unit — and understanding how they work together is key to evaluating any breed. Croup Angle and Tail Set The croup's angle determines tail set and follow-through. A steep croup lets a dog reach far under itself but limits follow-through — the dog picks its foot back up instead of pushing off completely. A high tail set (Stephanie's memorable test: can you see the dog's anus from behind?) produces a tail that curls over the back and signals a structural problem, not just a cosmetic one. Hock Length: Short Isn't Always Better Not every breed needs a short hock. Whippets need length to generate speed. Corgis need enough leg to cover ground. The right hock length always comes back to the question: can this dog do the job it was bred to do? Bend of Stifle and Sickle Hock Too much bend in the stifle often produces an overly long rear pastern and a sickle hock — the dog can't stand square and loses its ability to push off effectively. Handlers may be able to mask it on the stack, but the dog's movement tells the truth. Why Balance Is Everything A dog that is straight both front and rear tires quickly but stays sound. Some never made it to market and some had a good run but were eventually beat out by something better. These technologies competed during the transition from bulky CRTs to flat panels, but most lost out as LCD, later becoming LED-backlit LCD, then OLED, became dominant for reasons like cost, scalability, picture quality improvements, and manufacturing ease. Technologies That Were Proposed/Demonstrated but Never Commercially Released to Consumers SED (Surface-Conduction Electron-Emitter Display)Developed primarily by a Canon and Toshiba joint venture starting in the late 1990s/early 2000s. It was essentially a flat-panel evolution of CRT technology using electron emitters for each pixel, promising CRT-like motion handling, deep blacks, high contrast, fast response times, and low power in a slim form factor. Prototypes were shown around 2005–2007 with impressive demos. Why it didn't make it: Repeated delays due to manufacturing challenges (high production costs, difficulty scaling/vacuum sealing), patent disputes, and aggressive price drops in LCD/plasma panels. Then by 2009–2010, LCD had become too dominant and cheap; Canon officially froze consumer SED development in 2010, shifting any remaining efforts to niche professional uses. FED (Field-Emission Display)Similar to SED and sometimes grouped together or seen as a precursor/variant. FED used field-emission electron sources (like microtips) for CRT-style performance in a flat panel. Demonstrated in prototypes in the 2000s by companies like Sony and Motorola. Why it didn't make it: Development took too long; manufacturing complexity and yield issues made it unviable. It was overtaken by faster-scaling plasma and then LCD/OLED technologies before reaching mass production. Technologies That Reached the Market but Were Discontinued DLP (Digital Light Processing) Rear-Projection TVsUsed Texas Instruments' DMD (digital micromirror device) chips to reflect light, often with a color wheel for sequential color (or pricier 3-chip versions). Popular in the mid-2000s for large-screen (50–70+ inch) HDTVs from brands like Samsung, Mitsubishi, RCA, and Toshiba, offering good brightness, no burn-in, and sharp images at competitive prices. Why discontinued: Bulky depth (even if thinner than CRT rear-projection), lamp replacements needed, rainbow artifacts (on single-chip models), poor off-angle viewing, and vulnerability to ambient light. As flat-panel LCD and plasma prices fell dramatically in the late 2000s, consumers preferred slim, wall-mountable designs. Rear-projection DLP TVs largely vanished by around 2010. LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) / Variants like D-ILA (JVC) and SXRD (Sony)A reflective microdisplay tech using liquid crystals on a silicon backplane, often in rear-projection or some front-projection setups. Offered excellent contrast, deep blacks, and smooth motion (better than early LCDs). Available in HDTVs from JVC, Sony, and others in the mid-2000s. Why largely discontinued for direct-view TVs: High cost, manufacturing complexity, and lower brightness compared to emerging flat panels. Rear-projection versions suffered the same bulkiness issues as DLP. While LCOS survives today in high-end projectors mostly in JVC and Sony home theater models, it never scaled to mainstream direct-view flat-panel HDTVs and was eclipsed by LCD advancements. Plasma Display Panel (PDP / Plasma TVs)Used ionized gas (plasma) cells to create light, excelling in black levels, contrast, color accuracy, wide viewing angles, and no motion blur. Very popular for HDTV in the 2000s from Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, and LG. Why discontinued: High power consumption, heat generation, heavier panels, burn-in risk (though mitigated later), and difficulty scaling to 4K efficiently/cost-effectively. As LCD/LED prices dropped with better brightness, efficiency, and no burn-in, plasma couldn't compete economically. Production fully ended around 2014–2015. Other Notable Mentions LCD Rear-Projection TVs — Used transmissive LCD panels; suffered from similar bulk and light issues as DLP; discontinued early-mid 2000s. Direct-view CRT HDTVs — The original standard; fully discontinued by the late 2000s/early 2010s due to size, weight, and inefficiency. Key Reasons Technologies Fail in HDTV Market Regardless of how good a display technology is, the following will keep it from the mass market: Cost & Manufacturing Yield: Technologies requiring ultra-precise processes (SED, FED, LCoS) couldn't hit competitive prices.  Competing Technologies Improve Fast: LCD and later LED/OLED got cheaper and better quicker than rivals could scale. Form Factor Shift: Direct-view panels beat rear-projection (DLP, LCoS, laser) because consumers prefer thin TVs. Performance Tradeoffs: Issues like power use, burn-in, brightness, viewing angles, or reliability hurt consumer uptake.  In summary, the winners were technologies that scaled cheaply to larger sizes, became thinner/lighter, improved efficiency, and avoided major drawbacks like high costs or reliability issues. LCD/LED dominated the 2010s due to mass production advantages, while OLED took premium segments later for superior contrast/per-pixel lighting. Many promising "next-gen" ideas from the 2000s (like SED/FED) simply arrived too late or proved too hard to manufacture affordably.

Last Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted by a grand jury on two counts. This, on the heels of former FBI Director James Comey's arraignment, where pre-trial motions were granted around vindictive and selective prosecution.
