Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight ShowThis is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events that span as far back as UFC 1, PRIDE, K-1, and now DREAM!This episode: DREAM 1Join Eddie Mercado & Victor Rodriguez as they delve into the world of the DREAM (a popular MMA Promotion) based out of Japan. We conducted a retroactive post-fight show for the inaugural ‘DREAM 1: Lightweight Grand Prix 2008 1st Round' event this week, straight out of the archives of yesteryear. So let's take a trip back to Sat, Mar 15, 2008.The guys will explore the inaugural MMA Promotions event, which featured the first seven tournament bouts, fought at 154 lbs (70 kg), along with a trio of open-weight fights – complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. The event was broadcast LIVE across Japan on the TBS Television network, from the Saitama Super Arena, in Saitama, Japan. The event remarkably attracted a sellout crowd for its debut, with 19,120 viewers. For those of you not in the know, the ‘DREAM Grand Prix Tournament Series' required all bouts be fought under their own ‘DREAM Mixed Martial Arts Rules', which amounted to a ten-minute first round and a five-minute second round, with the fights judged overall.Bloody Elbow Podcasts are now 100% listener-financed broadcasts. To receive new shows and support our Podcast Team, consider becoming a paid subscriber today. The evening's main event showcased the 2007 ‘HERO's Middleweight Champion', J. Z. Calvancanti of Brazil throwing down with Japan's own judoka, Shinya Aoki. “Hero's” was another Japanese MMA Promotion at the time, affiliated with K-1. HERO's was discontinued in order to create the new DREAM franchise in collaboration with former PRIDE FC executives. And if you aren't familiar with PRIDE - well, I don't know what to tell you… you had best go down a google-search-rabbit-hole this weekend and learn about one of the most innovative and legendary promotions in the history of the sport.Anyway, we had the exciting, fun, new, promising DREAM MMA Promotion debuting a tournament series with a card featuring a total of ten bouts; with half of them ending in finishes! Take away the four decisions and we got three knockouts and two submissions… then throw in one no contest thanks to an injury via illegal elbows (which btw, spoiler alert, happened to be the result of the main event) and you had one helluva event.Watch with usIf you would like to watch the bouts, Victor says he found the event on YouTube in its entirety. I had no such luck, but was able to locate most of the individual bouts and some highlight reels, they are all linked into this post. As of the time of this writing, a message has gone out to Victor to try to obtain this elusive link; if located, the post will be updated with it as soon as possible. If a bout was split into two clips, I have them one after the other in the timestamp segment of the post.Join us to rediscover all the action and discuss as we go along! In the QuarterfinalsFfion Davies took a decision over Giovanna Jara on points, this was the only points win in the first two rounds. Elisabeth Clay submitted Joanna Dineva with a great Reverse Triangle after working on it earlier in the match, Amy Campo submitted Julia Maele with a Rear Naked Choke a little more than halfway through the match.  Brianna Ste-Marie submitted Maggie Grindatti with a textbook Armbar after Grindatti escaped one of the deepest non-break Kimura's we have seen ever on the show. In the semifinals Elisabeth Clay submitted Ffion Davies with a Toe Hold in under 3 minutes cementing her slot as one if not the best women's leg locker on the planet.  Amy Campo submitted Brianna Ste-Marie with a Rear Naked Choke almost at the buzzer less than 10 seconds before the end of the match. In the finals we saw Elisabeth Clay beat Amy Campo by one points due to Campo sitting back for a leg and Clay taking top position.  This event was great. We also briefly recapped SOGI and Keith Krikorian match on the card and the heavyweight title match. Recorded 3-12-2023

Our fight experts, Zane Simon & the returning Eddie Mercado are back to breakdown the UFC Vegas 51: ‘Luque vs Muhammad 2' Fight Night event! The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The card had a 'somewhat compelling' main event, and some other fights to accompany it. Join us to hear the noteworthy details... The UFC showcased a Welterweight Contender's bout this weekend at their UFC Vegas 51 Fight Night event featuring the rematch between Vicente ‘The Silent Assassin' Luque and Belal ‘Remember the Name' Muhammad. Luque, the New Jersey native, fighting by way of Brazil, after coming off a four-fight win streak, currently ranked #4 with a 21-7 record, is thought by some to be one of the best grapplers out there. Muhammad, a native Chicagoan, currently on an impressive six-fight win streak, currently ranked #5 with a 20-3 record, was determined to leave the octagon victorious this time around. In our co-main event, we had contract winners from 'The Dana White Contender Series' battling it out at middleweight. Caio ‘The Natural' Borralho squared off against fellow debuting foe, Gadzhi Omargadzhiev. Caio was entering the octagon on a decent professional ten-fight win streak making his UFC debut, fighting out of Brazil with a 10-1 record. Meanwhile, Gadzhi, held his own 13-bout professional fight win streak, also debuting tonight, fighting out of Russia. The other dozen fights on the card were a mixed bag. A couple of noteworthy clashes occurred on the Prelims card, primarily when the prospect to watch, Drakkar Klose, collided with Brandon Jenkins. Overall, this massive 14-bout card saw 2 1st Rd finishes, 4 KO/TKO's, 1 sub, & 9 decisions, 2 technical, 1 split & 1 majority. Drakkar Klose & Andre Fialho were awarded $50K ea for their POTN efforts, FOTN went to Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Wu Yanan. Our fight expert, Zane Simon is back, joined by Mookie Alexander to breakdown the UFC COLUMBUS: ‘Blaydes vs. Daukaus' Fight Night event. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC put their elite HWs on display again this week in the Main Event of UFC COLUMBUS. The match-up was a collision between Chicago native, #4 ranked, Curtis ‘Razor' Blaydes against the Philly native, #11 ranked, Chris Daukaus. Blaydes, the Elevation Fight Team brawler, came at this bout with an impressive 15-3 record, coming off top 10 divisional victory against Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 266 last fall. Daukaus, ‘The Cop', was coming off a loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC Vegas 46 back in December, despite being on the brink of title contention, with a solid record of 12-4. In the co-main event clash, we had a Top 10 Women's Flyweight scrap between the Scottish Muay Thai expert, Joanne ‘JoJo' Wood (formerly Calderwood) who squared off against the Latina dynamo, Alexa Grasso. JoJo was coming off a two-fight losing streak, having lost three of her last four, now ranked #7, holding a 15-7 record; while Grasso, the climbing phenom, walked into the octagon on a two-fight win streak tonight, ranked #9 with a 13-3 record, sporting some wicked boxing skills. Our fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado are back to breakdown the UFC LONDON: ‘Volkov vs Aspinall' Fight Night event. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC put their HWs on display tonight in the Main Event of UFC LONDON. The match-up between Alexander Volkov vs. Tom Aspinall ended much more quickly than many had anticipated it would. The rising British star of the HW division from Atherton, Aspinall, was coming at this on a 7-fight win streak, with a record of 11-2, but only ranked #11 in the division. Meanwhile, ‘Drago', the impressive veteran Russian brawler, ranked #6 in the division, walked into the Octagon with a storied 34-9 record, after coming off a win to Marcin Tybura at UFC 267. In the co-main event, we had a FW scrap between the British contender, ‘Almighty' Arnold Allen, and the New Zealander, Dan ‘The Hangman' Hooker. Allen, was intent on extending his 8-fight win streak in front of his home crowd. Hooker had just returned to the LW division after a brief detour at FW. Rounding out the main card, were four additional fights: Just prior to the co-main event we saw LWs Paddy ‘The Baddy' Pimblett the local favorite from Liverpool & the brawler from Mexico City, Kazula Vargas, go at it in what the UFC was marketing as “The People's Main Event”. We were also treated to a WW bout, from Gunnar Nelson & Takashi Sato. There was also a FW tilt between Liverpool's Molly McCann & Brazil's Luana Carolina. Also worth mentioning, was the LW debut of Ilia Topuria of Spain against Jai Herbert, the British favorite in our main card opener. Our featured prelim tonight highlighted one of many bouts on the card put which put on a performance of the night finish, between Makwan Amirkhani & Mike Grundy in the 1st Rd. For all the results, reactions & much more detail on the main card, with plenty of tidbits about the six-bout prelims card as well, be sure to hit play on the show to hear what our fight experts, Zane and Eddie, have to say. Overall, this 12-bout card saw 7 1st Rd finishes, 4 KO/TKO's, 5 subs, & 3 decisions. Rounding things out, our fighters who were awarded for putting forth POTN efforts? Meanwhile Ankalaev, the impressive emerging Russian, was building a case for contendership, walking into the Octagon with a 16-1 record, on an impressive seven-fight win streak; this would be his first five-rounder, defining his forthcoming trajectory in the promotion. In the co-main event, we had a BW scrap between the up-n-comer Chinese, Song Yadong from Team Alpha Male, and the Brazilian veteran, Marlon Moraes. The ‘Kung Fu Monkey' was looking to notch a third win in a row on his belt, upping his record to 19-6 against ‘Magic' Moraes tonight. Marlon was hoping to break his three-fight loss streak, increasing his own record to 24-9 in an effort to secure a slot in the Top 10 of the division. Song meanwhile, has been preparing hard to advance his journey towards title contention. Where the main event went to the judges scorecard, in stark contrast, the co-main was over in around two minutes. Be sure to check out the highlight reel. Just prior to the co-main event we saw FWs Sodiq ‘Super' Yusuff vs Alex ‘Bruce Leeroy' Caceres go at it. We were treated to a LHW bout from ‘The War Horse' Khalil Rountree & Karl ‘Baby K' Roberson. There was also a LW brawl between Drew Dober & Terrance ‘T.Wrecks' McKinney (who accepted the bout on short notice right after appearing at UFC Vegas 49 on Feb 23rd). Also worth mentioning, was the MW tilt between fellow Brazilians, Alex Poatan' ‘Pereira & Bruno ‘Blindado' Silva in our main card opener. ________________________________________________________ Overall, this 14-bout card saw 3 1st Rd finishes, 5 KO/TKO's, 3t subs, & 6 decisions. Four fighters were awarded for putting forth POTN efforts: Khalil Rountree, Cody Brundage, Song Yadong & Azamat Murzakanov: FOTN honors went to nobody tonight. Bloody Elbow fight experts, Eddie Mercado & Mookie Alexander, are here to breakdown the UFC 272: ‘Covington vs. Masvidal' PPV event, from Vegas. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC showcased the #6 ranked ‘BMF Champ', Jorge Masvidal, in a Welterweight grudge match with former friend, Colby “Chao”s Covington. Masvidal formerly competed with Bellator, Strikeforce, Shark Fights & World Victory Road during his 18 years as a professional mixed martial artist. He still holds the record for the fastest KO in UFC history, at just five seconds. His foe, Covington, holds the distinction of being the former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion and is seated in the #1 slot in the divisional rankings. Meanwhile, the co-main event featured a replacement match. Instead of RDA vs Rafael Fiziev, we received former UFC Lightweight Champ Rafael dos Anjos vs . Renato Moicano. Moicano is the former interim Jungle Fight Featherweight Champ. He has two wins and a loss under his belt after his battle with COVID-19 this past November and December. The last minute bout he accepted on five days notice, was contested at a catchweight of 160 lbs. Also on the PPV card, we had a FW match between fight veteran, Edson ‘Junior' Barboza & the undefeated up-and-comer, Bryce ‘Thug Nasty' Mitchell, who entered the Octagon on a 5-fight win streak. We also had an exciting matchup between MWs, Kevin ‘Trailblazer' Holland & Alex ‘Cowboy' Oliveira. Not to mention, we were treated to a surprisingly engaging 2-min HW scrap in our main card opener between Sergey Spivak & Greg Hardy. For all the results, reactions and much more detail on the main PPV card and plenty of tidbits about the prelims too, be sure to hit play on the show to hear what our actual fight experts, Mookie and Eddie, have to say about the event last night. Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado, are here to breakdown the UFC VEGAS 49: ‘Makhachev vs. Green' Fight Night event. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC replaced a LW Main Event between Islam Makhachev & Dariush, with a last min 160lb catchweight bout between Makhachev & Bobby Green, instead. Green was filling in on short-notice to replace the injured Dariush. In the co-main event, we had a MW scrap between Wellington Turman & Misha Cirkunov, resulting in a POTN Bonus awarded to Turman, who managed to capture an unexpected sub after a decent effort was put forth by Cirkunov. Rounding out the main card, were 3 additional fights: including FOTN between Flyweights Priscilla Cachoeira & Ji Yeon Kim who battled back-n-forth all 3 hard-fought rounds, an enjoyable POTN from Arman Tsarukyan, who dominated for almost 7 mins, putting an end to fellow LW Joel Alvarez with a ref stoppage. Also worth mentioning, was the Split Decision battle between DWCS alum, Armen Petrosyan in his UFC debut against Gregory Rodrigues in our main card opener. Our featured prelim tonight featured an unusual finish, a Sub via Brabo Choke, which was delivered by Ignacio Bahamondes over Zhu Rong. For all the results, reactions and much more detail on the main card and plenty of tidbits about the prelims as well, be sure hit play on the show to hear what our fight experts have to say about the event last night. Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado, are here to breakdown the UFC Vegas 46: ‘Kattar vs. Chikadze' Fight Night event, from Las Vegas, NV. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC showcased a Featherweight brawl in the main event of UFC Vegas 46. We had the No. 5 UFC ranked, former EliteXC competitor & BJJ blue belt, Calvin “The Boston Finisher” Kattar, with a 22-5 record, entering the octagon to combat the No. 8 ranked former kickboxer & GLORY combatant, Giga ‘The Ninja' Chikadze, with a current record of 14-2. The Boston Finisher was in fine form headlining tonight. He impressed for the entire five rounds, shattering Giga's seven-bout win streak in a FOTN Performance victory. Meanwhile, the co-main event featured Heavyweight contenders, Chase ‘The Vanilla Gorilla' Sherman, and Jake ‘The Prototype' Collier. Former Titan FC competitor & bare knuckle boxer, Sherman, held a 15-8 record entering the octagon tonight. Meanwhile, the Missouri Native, Collier, held a record of 12-6 walking into this bout. Collier didn't lose a minute taking Sherman down, slashing him with bloody elbows and submitting him via rear-naked choke in a thrilling first round finish. Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado, are here to breakdown the UFC Vegas 45: ‘Lewis vs. Daukaus' Fight Night event from Las Vegas, NV. The guys have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. The UFC showcased a Heavyweight brawl in the main event of UFC Vegas 45. We had the No. 3 UFC ranked, former Legacy FC Heavyweight Champion & former Bellator competitor, Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis, with a 25-8 record, specializing in BJJ, entering the octagon to combat the No. 7 ranked former police officer, who is also notably the younger brother of fellow UFC fighter Kyle Daukaus, with a current record of 12-3, but undefeated in the UFC, with four KO's of his own. Despite their rankings, Lewis managed to enter this bout as a slight underdog with Daukaus being favored by the oddsmakers. It made no difference to Lewis what the odds were, he intended to walk in, get a vintage early knockout to top off his UFC KO record... and that is just what he did. Meanwhile, the co-main event featured Welterweight contenders Stephen ‘Wonderboy' Thompson and Belal ‘Remember the Name' Muhammad, in a brawl which many felt should have been the main event. No. 5 ranked, South Carolina Kickboxing Phenom, Thompson held a 16-5 record entering the octagon tonight. Meanwhile, the Chicagoan BJJ expert, Muhammad, was ranked down in the No. 10 slot, after having formerly competed for Bellator and Titan FC he holds a record of 19-3 walking into this bout. For much more detail on the main card and plenty of tidbits about the prelims, be sure to hit play on the show and hear what our fight experts have to say about the event last night.
