This week elle speaks to Achtung! about their debut album 'Spear in Fine View'. The album commemorates the tumultous haze of young adulthood, with each track exploding through characteristic post-punk, emo guitar.  Written over the course of three years, the songs act as 'diary entries' of particular periods in the band's life. Moments that are immortalised in intricate metaphor and cathartically felt through their thrashing melodies.  How can you not love a band that references King Krule and Sally Rooney in the same breath?  A big thank you to NZ On Air Music! listen back x

Big Surprise, Everingham's reflective third album, interlaces vulnerable narrative threads between pattering percussion and fluid acoustic melodies. The album elucidates human emotion and complexity through a long existential drive, images of flowers on a kitchen counter, an acceptance of the permanence of change, and becoming Judi Dench. Her lyricism captures the hope and spirit of what is to come after the war (a tormenting relationship). For this week's Fancy New Band, we welcomed Righteous Marcel into the studio!  Righteous Marcel is an Emerging soul/contempory R&B artist who produces everything himself. Elle spoke to Romi Wrights and Kenny Sterling, about their debut album Andy. Dedicated to the life of Romi's close friend Andrea Orani, the album ruminates on the permanence of her loss and lovingly embraces their relationship and the time they shared. Imbued with Andy's spirit, the album shimmers amongst the broad piano, woodwind and strings which cascade from track-to-track. Embedded within Romi's quintessential soul and jazz-fusion band, her voice unabashedly tells the universally felt narrative of love and heartbreak. deepState is the musical project of Jessica Morgan (she/her), a musician and songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau.Teaming up with Sunreturn in 2021 for her debut MMXXI, Morgan has made her name for herself while exploring the nuances of House, Electronica, Downtempo, Garage and Breakbeat. deepState would go on to release MMXXI Remixes (featuring the likes of Dbldbl & Grecco Romank) along with singles with esteemed local electronic labels like Echo Train and Big Fresh Collective. In 2023 she released Dreams that would see her win Te Tohu Kohinga Mariu (Favourite Album) at the 2023 Student Radio Network Awards and nominated for 2024 Te Manu Taki Tāhiko o te Tau (Best Electronic Artist) at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards. deepState's tracks long for the dancefloor and she's performed at The Others Way, Cross Street Music Festival, Newtown Fest, Camp A Low Hum and supported international talents such as Iglooghost.Today, deepState returns with 'Rain,' the atmospheric title track from her forthcoming album, due for release on September 12. 'Rain' is accompanied by a lush music video made by Te Whanganui-a-Tara animator Ew Splat and made with assistance from NZ On Air Music.
