Die Sommerpause von "XtraChill" endet heute, am 15. September 2025! The summer break for "XtraChill" ends today, September 15th, 2025! Summer is slowly turning into autumn – for many, the most beautiful time of the year, and certainly for dear Andreas, who conceived and partially pre-produced this 445th episode before his little trip to Italy so as not to put himself under unnecessary stress in the short time between his return and the release date. Today's music selection is divided up quite differently, because (probably for the first time) you can expect a five-pack in the middle of the playlist. And that's not all: for the first time, a pair of songs will serve as bouncer at the end! So even after more than 19 years on the air, novelties are still possible on "XtraChill"!
This new episode is a slow drift into the textures of South India: the restless pulse of Chennai's streets, the stillness of a yoga shala at dawn, and the vast orchestration of a tropical night storm. These layers are touched gently with electronica—like glimmers of memory, like the way technology sits side by side with tradition in India. And, punctuating the journey, come the voices of teachers: fragments of WhatsApp messages that carry not just words but intention, care, and a lineage of practice in the simplest of forms. The episode is structured as a weave.Streets: density, rhythm, surrender to chaos.Shala: stillness, breath, intimacy with silence.Storm: scale, power, surrender to nature.Messages: guidance, lineage, the human voice carried across time and technology.Electronica acts as a thread, never dominating, but stitching the worlds together. A filtered bass line might echo the rumble of a bus or a thundercloud. A synth pad might stretch like the silence of a shala breath. Digital glitches mirror raindrops striking metal roofs. The weave is intentional but not forced. India itself is a weave: tradition and technology, chaos and stillness, ritual and improvisation. The episode mirrors this reality. The practice of this episode is the practice of listening. Not just passive listening, but active, embodied listening. In yoga, we speak of shravanam—the act of hearing as a form of learning. This is not entertainment. It is presence.

With this episode, we're putting on our music hat. For a program that relies so much on scoring and sound, it's not often we talk about the musicians and the music they make that inspire us. Today, that changes. Today, we bring you two stories. Each about musicians that our former host and creator of Radiolab, Jad Abumrad, loves. We originally released these stories many years ago, and both start deep in music itself. Then quickly, they dig deeper — into our relationships with technology, and ourselves. We start with the band Dawn of Midi, who straddle the intersection between acoustic and electronic sounds. Jad talks to the band about their album, Dysnomia, and how it's filled with heavily-layered rhythms that feel both mechanistic and deeply human, at the same time. Then, Jad talks with Juana Molina, an Argentine singer who accidentally became a famous actress, when all along all she really wanted was to be a musician. Special thanks to Dawn of Midi and Juana Molina.EPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - JAD ABUMRAD EPISODE CITATIONS:Check out Dawn of Midi at dawnofmidi.com and Juana Molina at juanamolina.comSignup for our newsletter!!
