Since her untimely death in 2006 the Science Fiction world has come to realize that Octavia Butler is one of its most important voices. This year for the first time her 1995 classic made the bestseller list because the 25-year-old book sadly casts a light on our modern world far too well. In this episode, I interviewed an artist and writing duo Damian Duffy and John Jennings. They carrying the flag for Butler in one of the most exciting ways possible. Starting with Butler's classic novel about the horrors of Slavery Kindred. The book went on to win the 2017 Bram Stoker award for the best graphic novel. This year they followed that release with an adaptation of Butler's most popular book The Parable of the Sower. This interview is a fun look at the process beyond the creation of the books, the choices the team made adapting the novel, and of course the importance of Octavia Butler. John Jennings is a Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California at Riverside. Damian Duffy Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he teaches courses on computers & culture, and social media & global change. •You can find my books here: https://bookshop.org/contributors/david-agranoff • You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

“When vision fails Direction is lost. When direction is lost Purpose may be forgotten. When purpose is forgotten Emotion rules alone. When emotion rules alone, Destruction...destruction” This is this week's quote from Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents, Volume 2. So much of this year is about vision. How we view the past, present and future. We are asked to embrace non-linear time for we seek something that no one person can conceptualize. We all co-create and the puzzle pieces cannot form something cohesive. Some of the pieces will not exist for decades and some are waiting to be retrieved as they are carried by ancestors. But when we are blinded by rage and anger of the present, we cannot hear and we cannot act in alignment with the future. This Lunar Eclipse pushes us into an uncomfortable position where we see we are not only accountable to ourselves. Although each of us matters, our needs and thoughts do not supersede those of the collective. It's time to abandon hyper-individualism. There is not just one truth, one narrative. No one. truth or narrative is forever. We must let our physical and emotional inheritance. serve. their. purpose and then let them go. How is this possible when we hold on tight because we fear the future is out of control? Are we able to find solace in the only truth which is change. "All that you touch You Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth Is Change. God Is Change." - Octavia Butler Work referenced this week: AliceSparklyKat Mars in Aries Marcella Kroll Spell Rob Brezny - Imaginal Hygiene adrienne maree brown article "a word for white people, in two parts" God is Change: Octavia Butler Immersion (not an ad, just something that may interest folx) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/youwomanyou/message

"Samanvay" is a Hindi word with a translation into English: "to come together as a group to work for a common purpose." This episode features perspectives from Megha from Ajmeer, Rajasthan (a state in India), and the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. In this episode, Megha and Amy discuss access to education, self-directed education, and Megha’s journey as an industrial design student at the Srishti Institute of Art Design and Technology. Megha completed her master’s thesis while working in the handicraft sector across several different NGO (non-governmental organizations) projects in different states in India. The word "craft" to Megha is a practice where a group of people share a similar process to create something useful and necessary. Crafts originated from a person within a community contributing to the needs of the community with something they are able to create through their material of choice. This is how the exchange of handcrafts was done in healthier times. Her main motivating factors for her work are what affects people's livelihood, happiness and identity. Looking at all the factors that impact an artisan, Megha feels that anyone can be an artisan, as long as they are informed by the importance of the “Why." Megha’s passions are rooted in sustainability and functionality. She aims to be involved with creating systems that serve the highest agenda: symbiotic relational-systems rooted in values of serving each other, appreciating different products and techniques as art forms, and doing all that through the lens that the practice of using any resource must be sustainable.
