Recorded on May 16, 2026 at Boundless Mind Temple in Brooklyn, NY. Please enjoy this dharma talk by BZC teacher Sarah Dōjin Emerson. Sarah explores the teachings of Zen master and author Norma Wong about the wisdom of community and collective leading; and the teachings of Paula Arai on ceremonies of healing. Sarah's talk includes Norma Wong Roshi's chanting practice of calling in aloha through collective chanting, and shares Wong Roshi's connection between the indigenous Hawaiian meaning of aloha, and her Zen teacher's understanding of aloha as compassion manifested. Sarah reads briefly from Norma Wong's latest book, Who We Are Becoming Matters. Sarah also mentioned the podcast episode "Reverence for Death," with Prentis Hemphill and Alua Arthur, from the Becoming the People podcast. https://becomingthepeople.buzzsprout.com/1108100/episodes/19167987-reverence-for-death-with-alua-arthur Some information about the authors mentioned: Norma Wong (Norma Ryūkō Kawelokū Wong Roshi) is an 86th generation Zen master and a Native Hawaiian and Hakka Chinese life-long resident of Hawai'i. She is the author of the books Who We Are Becoming Matters: The Courage, Wisdom, and Aloha We Need in a Timeplace of Collapse (2026), and When No Thing Works: A Zen and Indigenous Perspective on Resilience, Shared Purpose, and Leadership in the Timeplace of Collapse (2024). https://www.normawong.com/ Dr. Paula Arai is a Sōtō Zen practitioner, Chair of Women and Buddhist Studies at the Institute of Buddhist Studies at UC Berkeley, and faculty at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. Her focus of study is the practices of Japanese Sōtō Zen laywomen. Her latest book is The Little Book of Zen Healing: Japanese Rituals for Beauty, Harmony, and Love (2023). https://www.zenhealing.org/
Most people don't fear change itself — they fear the moment before they know if they're going to be okay. And according to Dr. Jimmie Williamson, that gap between uncertainty and clarity is where organizations either hold their people together or quietly lose them. In this episode of Your Health University, Jamie sits down with Dr. Jimmie Williamson, Chief Behavioral Health Officer at Your Health, in the middle of a real organizational merger — making this conversation as timely and personal as it gets. Dr. Williamson draws on decades of clinical experience, behavioral health expertise, and his own career pivots (including leaving a 28-year career to step into healthcare) to walk us through what change actually does to the human brain and body — and what it takes to move through it well. Key topics include: Why even positive change triggers a physiological threat response — and what science says is actually happening in your brain The five stages of change people move through (shock, resistance, exploration, and beyond) and why getting stuck isn't a character flaw Dr. David Rock's SCARF model — the five psychological domains (Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness) that determine whether people feel safe or threatened during transitions What leaders most commonly get wrong when communicating change — and the one mistake that always creates a narrative vacuum Why insecurity in leadership is more dangerous than the change itself The one self-care practice you can start today if you're feeling the weight of uncertainty Change is positive. It is good. And it is inevitable. This episode will help you believe that — and act like it. www.YourHealth.Org

What turns a group of students into a community? In this episode, Jocelynn shares how watching the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop unexpectedly inspired a powerful reflection on classroom culture, shared purpose, and collective identity. From a vivid childhood memory of singing We Are the World in kindergarten to intentionally using the song years later as a 7th grade social studies teacher, this episode explores how music, art, and shared experiences can transform instructional culture no matter what subject you teach.Because culture is not built through rules alone. It is built through shared meaning. In This Episode, We Explore:Why shared purpose is what turns a group of students into a communityHow music serves as an international language and a powerful instructional toolThe difference between nostalgia and intentional instructional designHow analyzing both lyrics and visual media deepens student thinkingWhy connection strengthens cognitive safety and engagementHow to reset classroom culture at any point in the yearYou'll hear how students analyzed both the 1985 and 2010 versions of We Are the World, discussed influence and platform, examined generational legacy, and expanded lesson goals beyond surface-level standards. You'll also hear how poetry, music, and collective agreements became a reset tool throughout the year — serving as a cultural anchor when energy dipped or tension rose.Instructional TakeawaysThis episode highlights practical moves you can implement immediately:Begin with shared purpose, not just proceduresUse art and storytelling as intellectual entry pointsDesign classroom agreements rooted in identity and contributionRevisit shared artifacts when culture needs recalibrationFrame learning as contribution, not consumptionAnd remember:Beginning is when you begin.Ready to Build This Foundation in Your Classroom? If you're looking for structure to help establish belonging, shared identity, and collective purpose, explore:The First 10 Days: Back to School – Building a Classroom of Belonging: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-First-10-Days-Back-to-School-Building-a-Classroom-of-Belonging-14072086This resource is designed to help teachers establish purpose, belonging, and shared identity from the beginning — or whenever you choose to reset.Because shared purpose is not tied to a calendar. It is tied to intention.Coaching Corner ReflectionAs you reflect on this episode, consider:What will students learn about themselves as contributors to something larger than themselves? What will they learn about their peers? What will they learn about the world?Using the AAA Reflection Framework:What am I becoming aware of about shared purpose in my classroom or school? What am I choosing to accept, challenge, or release?Small. In this episode, Dr. Ann Cheney shares about Unidas por Salud, a community–academic partnership made up of community members, students, and academics working together to advance health equity in underserved communities. This women-led group is transforming care in the Eastern Coachella Valley, where environmental hazards and structural inequity are reducing the quality of health outcomes. Through community-based participatory research, student-led clinics, culturally rooted care, and innovative programs like a medical Spanish curriculum and ancestral nutrition initiatives, this team reveals what happens when research is done in partnership with communities, not on them. We also explore the hard decisions behind ethical leadership, what it means to walk away from funding when trust is compromised, how to share power authentically, and why being an “outsider” requires humility, accountability, and invitation. In the face of policy shifts, fear-driven public health crises, and real-time community needs, you'll hear a moving example of what responsive care looks like when systems fall short. Listen to this conversation about hope found in students who carry the mission forward, in communities who open their doors, and in a model of care that refuses to leave anyone behind. Find me, Granger Forson, at www.bizsmart-gloucestershire.co.uk or on LinkedIn. Sarah O'Neill's journey began with a simple, heartfelt need: to feel part of a community again. What started as a personal response to the isolation of lockdowns grew into Cotswold Collective, a thriving rewards-based membership platform dedicated to supporting local businesses and bringing people together. Her background in marketing and events became the spark that helped transform a difficult season of life into something meaningful for thousands of others. In our conversation, Sarah shares the early days of the Collective, from persuading the first 40–50 local brands to take a chance on an unproven idea, through to today's network of more than 450 businesses and a rapidly growing membership. Her energy is infectious, and her belief in conscious shopping, shared experiences, and celebrating the stories behind local businesses shines through every step of her journey. We also explore how the Collective has evolved into a sophisticated digital product, recently launching an app that already has hundreds of downloads. Sarah explains how she designed the offers to be completely bespoke, ensuring that brands feel valued while consumers enjoy something genuinely special each time they use their membership. What really stands out is Sarah's deep commitment to purposeful connection. Whether through events, collaborations, or simply encouraging people to rediscover the high street, Cotswold Collective is about more than rewards. It's about belonging, supporting independents, and creating those magical moments when people meet, collaborate, and flourish together. Finally, Sarah opens up about the realities of building the business while raising two young children, the power of saying yes, and what it means to grow something with heart. My guest on today's show is cofounder of Thriviae and Workplace Performance Strategist, Luke Mulcahy. For the last few years Luke and his team have been developing a revolutionary platform that help support organisations in tackling some of the most pressing challenges of the modern workplace. His recently published academic paper and research report introduces the Periodic Table of Workplace Thriving, which I have to say really spoke to my love of order and organisation. It structures 24 enablers and over 100 measurable elements that shape wellbeing, performance and development across organisations. We began by focusing on the tricky topic of PURPOSE. What this really means, why it's important, and some of the challenges in articulating it as well as creating teams where there is a shared sense of purpose. As predicted, our conversation ran into a number of different topics including belonging, multi-generational workforces, burnout and team cohesion. If you want to find out more about Luke and the work he is doing you can find him on LinkedIn and his website, and I recommend having a read of the white paper and academic paper if it's a topic you're interested in! Why community is the most powerful tool for transformation.Community isn't just a feel-good buzzword. According to Gina Bianchini, it's a catalyst for personal and collective transformation.Bianchini is the CEO and founder of community-building platform, Mighty Networks, and author of the book Purpose: Design a Community and Change Your Life. "Community is when people come together, and every single member has something to give and something to receive," she explains. In contrast to the one-directional dynamic of a speaker and their audience or a creator and their following, Bianchini argues that the power of community lies in two-way exchanges, where each member benefits the group and benefits from it. "Community is the single most effective way to get results and transformation you just can't get on your own," she says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Bianchini joins host Matt Abrahams to discuss how to unlock the potential of purposeful communities. She shares strategies for finding your tribe during times of transition, the "people magic” created when we facilitate deep connections, and how creating community enables us to create the world and lives we imagine. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Gina BianchiniGina's Book: PurposeEp.174 Fix Meetings: Transform Gatherings Into Meaningful Moments Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:17) - Defining Community vs. Audience (04:05) - Community as a Catalyst for Transformation (06:41) - Finding the Right Community (10:29) - The Future Story Framework (13:22) - People Magic & Facilitation (19:07) - The Final Three Questions (24:59) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. In times of uncertainty, the most important thing leaders need to do is make sure their team's goals are directly tied to their organization's noble purpose. But how do we do that? How do we make sure we connect the ‘what'' of our days to the ‘why' that defines our future? In this edition of my “Leadership Espresso Shot” series, I share three questions leaders should be asking themselves to ensure they're staying on track to achieving their shared purpose, and not drifting off-course towards employee disengagement and dissatisfaction. Today, we're delving into a vital question: What does it truly take to cultivate a purpose-driven, human-centric workplace where every individual's potential is not just acknowledged, but actively nurtured and celebrated? While it may seem obvious that organisations would prioritise a human-first approach, the reality often falls short, with investment in employee development typically reserved for executives, leaders, and high potentials, leaving many behind. So, as leaders, how do we dismantle outdated hierarchies to ensure that every individual's unique and shared potential is realised? How do we embrace a more inclusive, purposeful, egalitarian view of our colleagues and co-workers? And how can technology empower us to ignite all of the above? To shed light on these questions, we're thrilled to welcome Fiona Vale and Paul Rush, the co-founders of Humanico, who are revolutionising how organisations cultivate their most valuable asset—their employees. Over the last year, Paul and Fi have navigated the unpredictable waves of startup life, gearing up for expansion after a series of successes. They secured nearly $1 million in Seed funding last year and were honoured with the Burning Heroes Award for Global Reach in November. This year, they're poised to expand Humancio's mission globally. So Humanico's solution is a Human Map - which stands as the world's first digital interactive map of employees. This cloud-based platform visualises employee capabilities and engagement levels in a dashboard, providing data-driven insights that empower executives to optimise their workforce effectively. With disengaged employees costing organisations trillions of dollars in lost productivity annually and workplaces struggling to keep pace with evolving trends, Humanico's AI-powered talent management platform offers a promising solution to enhance employee engagement and retention in today's competitive talent landscape. Having Paul and Fi join me in the studio was an absolute joy as we explored a range of topics, from unlocking human potential to driving organisational transformation with a people-first approach. Our conversation spanned purpose, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the transformative potential of community building. We also examined the surprising ways in which AI and technology can amplify human connection and experience. Throughout our discussion, Fi and Paul shared invaluable insights and highlights from their remarkable entrepreneurial journey. I'm confident you'll find this conversation as enlightening as I did. Aaron Hurst is the best-selling author of The Purpose Economy and founder of the workforce engagement platform Imperative and nonprofit Taproot Foundation. Learn about the power of purpose, how to build a culture of meaning, and the next step in his social impact legacy, Shared Purpose, retreats and dinners for friends, couples, and colleagues to clarify their purpose and vision for the next chapter in their lives. About Aaron Aaron Hurst is an award-winning social entrepreneur who uses curiosity, creativity, courage, and care to navigate the world with purpose. He founded the Taproot Foundation, Imperative, Board.dev, and Shared Purpose. More importantly, he is a husband, father, and friend. In 2013, co-founded and led Imperative, a venture-backed start-up, that developed the first employee purpose profiling technology that has enabled hundreds of thousands of people to discover and own their purpose at work. In 2020, he re-launched the company, creating the first enterprise peer coaching platform which has become a critical way to connect and develop employees in the hybrid workplace. In 2001, he founded the Taproot Foundation, where he catalyzed the $15 billion pro bono service market in the US and helped establish markets in over 30 countries. The nonprofit was one of the pioneers in building cross-sector partnerships and helped accelerate the growth of corporate social responsibility. Aaron's best-selling 2014 book, The Purpose Economy, predicted the rise of purpose as a leading driver of economic growth and innovation. He coined the term ‘Purpose Mindset' and in partnership with NYU developed the first commercial measure of employee fulfillment. He has led national and global studies on purpose in the workplace and in higher education in partnership with leading corporations and universities. Key Takeaways The Purpose Economy was based on Taproot Foundation—a pro bono service to help business professionals use their skills to help nonprofits. The book makes the business case that purpose and meaning drive innovation and economic value creation. A key to having a sense of purpose and meaning in your life is strong relationships. Meaningful relationships and the need for purpose and meaning these are two of the biggest predictors of life span and quality of life. Research shows women over 55 are especially likely to have a purpose mindset. A purpose mindset is related to the strongest leaders with the highest performance. There is a strong case that people over 55 are the best employees. Recognition of the value of older people is a major opportunity for employers. At a Shared Purpose Retreat, attendees come with a “co pilot” – a spouse, sibling, or friend to share the experience and language. The co-pilot accelerates your ability to be vulnerable.
