"One of the hardest decisions you'll ever face in life is choosing whether to walk away or try harder." Ziad Abdelnour This was one of the quotes included in Emma Isaacs much-acclaimed book; Winging It, that provided a huge a-ha moment for Jane. In a follow-up to episode #62 of Miss Bossy Boots podcast, where Stacey shared her top three take outs from Emma Isaac's book about business, Jane now shares a couple of hers. She relates Ziad's quote to business. "One of the hardest parts in business is choosing whether to walk away or try harder." Having recently removed herself from her everyday life for a week with a trip to San Fransisco, Jane returned with much clarity, new ideas, free thinking and a renewed energy. Two days later she resigned from a position that had been bothering her for at least twelve months. "I was so torn in this position as everything within my heart screamed to give it up but my head kept instructing me to 'harden up and to not give up'! "By just giving myself enough time to think, I was able to see with so much clarity that the only choice here was to walk away. Once I'd made the decision, I've never looked back!" The second quote that resonated with Jane was: "If you're the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room." This is powerful. And it's so true. Surrounding yourself by people who lift you can help you step outside of your comfort zone and become a better person of yourself. Stace and Jane both make a huge effort to do this in their business life. If you feel that these points may resonate with you, have a listen and we'd love to hear any additional comments or experiences you have about these over on our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/MissBossyBootsPodcast/ PS We highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book if you haven't read it already. it's full of aha moments and fabulous words of wisdom.
(LIVE from London!) Hey, Gorgeous! As the New Year Approaches, I find myself thinking about all that I want to do in 2018. And many of those things (goals, really) are things I've never done before. Do you find the same thing for you? If so, this is the perfect episode for you! I'm actually in the middle of doing something I've never done before IN this episode and I hope what I have to share encourages you and challenges you to step up and make some seriously strides toward those goals (even before the New Years Even clock strikes midnight!). What should we do to get from here to there? I've gravitated to this really simple and profound statement as I plan for 2018... To do things I've never done before, I need to do things I've never done before! That's actually why I’m here in London right now. If you haven't already watched this episode, I'm in London for a Christmas party. So, before you write me off as being frivolous, I have a couple things I'd love to share with you. A few days before receiving this Christmas party invitation, I decided to make live events with other women who are doing amazing things a true PRIORITY for me! In other words, I decided that IRL (or "in real life") allows for some incredible friendships to blossom, lovely connections to be made and don't get me started about the conversations that can happen! #IloveIRL And if you've seen or listened to Episode 7 where I talk about the concept of Lift (like an airplane, we can actually use the winds of resistance to climb), you may remember me referencing the "How much do you want this?" headwinds. Even though a Christmas party may not be considered a "headwind," the invitation sure felt like an opportunity to prove to myself how strongly I'll hold to my new IRL priority. So, I knew I needed to figure out a way to make this happen! Once I'd made the decision to go, I moved to think about all that I want to be a part of and accomplish in 2018. And I asked myself this question, "Why do I need to wait until the ball drops on December 31st to start acting on my New Year's Goals? As I listed out all that I want to do next year, then started listing out all that I'd need to actually DO to make those goals and dreams a reality, I noticed something in common around a lot of these "tasks." Many of them I'd never done before. And oddly, that was comforting. Because the goals I've set are for things I've never done before. So, if all the tasks were things I felt comfortable doing or wouldn't have to learn or ask for help in accomplishing, my plans for reaching those goals would probably fall short, right? Because what got us here won't get us there, right? And if I haven't shared my driving statement for my works, it's this: All women living bigger lives. Now, how on earth does this purpose become a reality without doing things I've never done before? :) (HINT: It doesn't) So, as you look at your plans for 2018, I have a two-part challenge for you. 1. What is your BIG goal for 2018? If you could wrap up all the things you want to accomplish into one BIG goal, what would that goal be? (And, to clarify BIG, I mean something you've never done before... Do you get a sense of what the second half of this challenge will be??) 2. Once you've defined that ONE BIG goal for 2018, what is ONE THING you've NEVER DONE BEFORE that you can do THIS WEEK to move you toward that goal? Because often time, all we need is a little momentum. A little bit of excitement or courage to move to the next thing, big or small. And honestly, here's the thing... time is going to pass either way. So, I hope you accept my challenge and DO SOMETHING YOU'VE NEVER DONE THIS WEEK to move you toward that goal. Want to share your goal with someone - or share the ONE THING you'd never done before that you finally DID? Comment below and tell me all about it! I promise to cheers you on! And speaking of doing things I’ve never done to get me where I’ve never been, I’m hold my first ever MasterClass called Shatter Your Glass Walls (So You Can Step Into a Life You Adore!) this coming Tuesday, December 5th! I’d be so honored if you’d join me. Click HERE to find out all the great details. Have an amazing week and, like I said, I hope you do something (it doesn’t have to be big) this week that you’ve never done before to move you toward your goals and your greatness! Until next week! How you can end up licking stamps for Scientologists, pumpkin heads (I kid you not), and why you might want to feed pumpkin to the men in your life What you will learn how you can change your feelings about a scary event in your past why you might want to feed pumpkin to the men in your life At the end of this episode I'll share with you three things that you probably don't know about pumpkin, including why you might want to feed some to the men in your life. Oh - and the story also features a brief appearance of three pumpkin heads... On with the story Living in Paris, France This story takes place in Paris, France, where I discovered in my twenties that there are all kinds of weird and wonderful (sometimes not so wonderful) ways to make money. If you've listened to my previous episodes, you'll know that for a while I was living with a kind of crazy French guy (whom I call Dave) who used hypnosis to teach people English (more about that in Episode 1). Unfortunately for us both, Dave wound up getting totally sucked into the world of Scientologists. This is how one day I found myself licking stamps for them and getting more than a glimpse into their inner world, which had some good things about it but also some pretty creepy things. It's also how I came to see the pumpkin heads, which turned out to be a very good thing. But first I need to start by telling you how Dave and I got involved with the Scientologists in the first place. My first encounter with Scientologists Dave and I were walking along the Paris streets at night - as you do because it's just so beautiful - and we saw this poster outside a beautiful building that advertised a talk given by the Scientologists on past lives. The talk was happening in like 10 minutes, so we thought, "Great! Perfect timing!" Plus it was a free talk, so we figured we had nothing to lose. In our defence, we didn't know anything about Scientologists at that time. Dave wound up losing his apartment which he'd bought himself as well as his health, but that's another story. We attended the talk, and while the content was pretty interesting, it basically turned out to be a big pitch to sign up for one of their courses. The courses were pretty expensive, but they said that you could attend the courses for free in exchange for volunteering. So Dave and I were curious and we thought, "Why not?" How to get free food You also could get free food if you helped them with some extra stuff, which is where the licking stamps comes in. I was desperate for an income at that time, and I figured that if licking stamps for Scientologists for a couple of hours was what it took to at least get food, I'd do that. It was pretty easy work. I was basically in a basement office with this other girl, and she stuffed envelopes while I licked stamps. Then they'd feed me and I'd go back home. That part was easy. As for the pumpkin heads, well that part's coming up now. Getting 'clear' So in exchange for our volunteering, we not only got some free courses, but we also got a free auditing session with a trainer. An auditing session at that time was a one-on-one session, so a bit like a therapy session, where the goal is to help you achieve a state of mind that the Scientologists call 'clear'. They told us that being 'clear' means that you're free from irrational fears, phobias, insecurities and that kind of thing. Sounds good, right? Who wouldn't want to be free of those things? I was totally willing to give it a go because I thought it would be really interesting. And I was right. It was extremely interesting. While a lot of Scientology is just plain scary - and I'll share why in the next episode - some of their principles are actually useful. The key word here though is 'some'. Not all. Definitely not. My auditing session For my auditing session, I went into a small room with what looked like a long dentist's chair with squishy cushions. The auditor - I have no idea what his name was, so I'll call him Matt - told me to lay back, relax and close my eyes. He then asked me to think of a time when something happened to me that I found either scary, stressful or otherwise unpleasant. And that was easy because this all took place just a few weeks after my run-in with three teenage gangsters on a train (which I talk about in Episode 6). Tell me a story... Next Matt asked me to tell him the story of what happened, so I did. I told him everything, starting from when they got on the train, then everything that happened with the gun (which I won't go through again here as that's in my previous episode), and finishing with them leaving the train. Once I'd told the story, I was expecting Matt to ask me questions, or make a comment or something. What I didn't expect was him to say rather blankly, "Tell me again". I was like "The whole thing? Again?" He was like "Yes, again". So I did. I told the whole story again...and again...and again. I must have told that story about ten times, and after each time I was thinking 'surely this is enough, he must be getting bored by now' but he would just keep saying "Again". Part of me was thinking "Damn, I could be doing this at home with a couple of girlfriends or something, not much therapy or change going on here". But I complied and repeated the story from the exact same place and ending at the exact same point. From 'fear gear' to 'neutral' Suddenly on the 11th telling or so, I just burst out laughing. What I saw was just so funny, I couldn't stop laughing. So Matt asks, "What's so funny?" And I told him that the three guys came into the train and each of them had a huge pumpkin for a head. I mean, you had to be there to find that funny I think, but for me it was hilarious. And in that moment I understood the power of this particular technique: the negativity around the experience was completely gone. It really did feel cleared out. Even when I talk about it now, it's like it doesn't have any emotional impact on me, it feels neutral. Neither positive nor negative. It's very weird. How useful is it to feel neutral, really? Now before you think I'm going to start singing the praises of Scientology, let me just say that for this particular experience, feeling neutral about it I think is a good thing. But I wouldn't want to feel neutral about everything difficult that ever happened to me. I don't know what you think and I'd quite like to know so feel free to pop your thoughts in the comments. For my part, I'd rather feel healed or integrated than neutral. This was at the very beginning of my experience with the Scientologists, but a few short weeks later I was running out of there totally freaked out. I couldn't wait to put lots of distance between me and them - and I'll share why in the next episode. On to the pumpkin goodies For now though, I'd like to share with you three things that you may not know about pumpkin, including why it could be an important food for men. Benefits of pumpkin First, did you know that you don't have to cook pumpkin? You can actually eat it raw, and I'll say more about that in a moment. Second, pumpkin is one of the best sources of beta-carotene, which gives it its orange color and converts into Vitamin A once we eat it. This is important because foods rich in beta-carotene are thought to help delay aging, fight cancer and prevent degenerative damage to the eyes which occurs as we get older. So pretty powerful stuff. I'll link to an article that goes into all of these benefits in more detail. It also has links to in-depth scientific studies, just so you can see that I'm not making this up. By the way, the article that I'll link to mentions that pumpkin and other beta-carotene-rich foods can be particularly effective against prostate cancer. So ladies, make sure the men in your life are getting some pumpkin in their diet, OK? And third, pumpkin is actually a great food if you're trying to slim down or not overeat. It has a lot of fiber for very little calories compared to other foods. You can make it into bread, cookies, crumbles and all kinds of delicious food. Some ideas for eating pumpkin Now, how do you eat pumpkin? Well, as I said, you can eat it raw. But whether you decide to cook it or not, you definitely have to peel it. The easiest way is to cut round the top of the pumpkin as if you were going to carve it, take the top out, and then scrape out the seeds and the fleshy fibrous bits. By the way, don't throw away the seeds. You can wash them and then dry them out and eat them. Some people toss them in oil and salt and bake them, but I just pop mine in a dehydrator and dry them out that way. As for your pumpkin, once you've removed the seeds and the stringy bits, you cut it in half and then into quarters, and peel each quarter with a strong knife. You'll be left with the flesh, which you can roughly chop and put right into your food processor or blender to make a smoothie or puree or whatever. I've got a recipe for Pumpkin Mousse on my blog which I'll link to in the show notes if you'd like to give it a try. It takes 5 minutes and is delicious. So if you run into anyone with a pumpkin, whether it's on their head or in their shopping cart, at least you'll know what to do with it. And if you'd like other recipe ideas for all kinds of fruit and veg, I've got lots in my 5-Minute recipe ebooks that I'll link to as well. Have YOU got a story to share? I'd never heard of the hazmat flag before, but apparently it isn't all that uncommon happening on such random products as baseballs, toy cars, and... my product. It's been a longer process getting it cleared than it should be, and as such I'm being forced to switch gears. Let's dive in to find out what happened! To leave a comment head to http://brandingblitz.com/6/ Full Transcript below: --- --- --- --- Hello again, and welcome back to the Branding Blitz podcast! I'm JR, and this is episode 6. It's been well a couple weeks since I recorded the last episode because I've had a long string of bad days with my health and life's been kind of crazy as a result. I went to the doctor yesterday, and got another steroid shot and some new meds, so I'm doing a bit better now, but still a bit out of whack. There have been some interesting things happening in the meantime though. After I recorded episode 5, discussing some common questions I'd seen about barcodes, it occurred to me that this is the kind of thing that would be handy to have in text form as well. Podcasts are a great format for explaining things, but they're not easily searchable if you are looking for a specific piece of information. So I put together a guide that is divided up into different sections with a table of contents that lets you jump to a specific question. The response to that guide has been fantastic. In the time since I posted that guide, it has nearly doubled in size as people have asked more questions and I've been able to add those answers to the guide. Each time I think I've got all the main stuff answered, someone else comes along and asks a great question, so it just keeps growing. My hope is that I can turn it into the most comprehensive guide to FBA barcodes possible. And that is made possible by people like you continuing to give feedback and asking more questions. If you'd like to check it out, you can find a link by going to http://brandingblitz.com/resources/The feedback I've gotten on this guide has truly been AMAZING – I love to teach people and knowing how helpful this has been is really exciting to me. It's inspired me not just to try and make this guide as comprehensive as possible, but also to try to create more guides. So I'd love to hear from you what topics you'd like to see a thorough guide created about. The past couple of weeks have been eventful for my product sourcing adventure as well – in some ways a little more eventful than I wanted this part of the process to be.I was ready to submit an order for my first product, but had decided I wanted to put the FNSKU on the product packaging straight from the manufacturer. So I set up the listing in Amazon to get the FNSKU. I went in to create a shipment so I could retrieve the label, and got an error message stating that the product was flagged as a potential hazmat issue and was under review.I had never heard of this before, but apparently, it isn't all that uncommon. Hazmat by the way is short for Hazardous Materials. Anything that is flammable, explosive, poisonous, corrosive, aerosol, or contains a lithium ion battery is supposed to automatically get flagged – so if your product matches any of those things be aware that you may have an issue. But my product didn't match any of those things, and I wasn't sure why it got flagged. In searching the internet and talking to people about my issue, I came across people who had really random products flagged. One person had a baseball flagged as hazmat, another person had a tennis ball – not sure what's going on with the sporting goods but those were two different people! Someone said they'd had a toy car that had the words “fire red” in the paint color and it got flagged, but they re-did the listing without the word “fire” and it went through. Anyway, as long as your product isn't actually hazmat, it should pass review. Depending on your product, you may be able to get what's called a Material Data Safety Sheet or MSDS from your manufacturer. An MSDS is basically a document that shows what materials your product is made of and how they respond to different environments, how flammable they are, how to extinguish if they do catch fire, what gases may be released if they catch fire, things they interact with, etc. So if you can get one of those, it should help with the review process – though I'm not sure if you can get an MSDS for something like a baseball. For my product, I actually already had an MSDS sheet. So it wasn't a big deal to upload that info. Once I'd done that, I hopped on a chat with seller support to see if there was any way to expedite the process. They assured me there was nothing they could do to speed it up, it would take 3-4 days, but that was great news because it used to take weeks or even months to get it done. That was on May 20th and for about the next 3 weeks I did not get any information and was told there was nothing that could be done to speed it up. Finally, on June 8th, I was told that they had determined the product to be a Hazmat product. Which means until we get this sorted out, I can't sell this product through FBA. They couldn't tell me why it got flagged as Hazmat or why they decided to leave it that way. But they submitted a ticket to the department that handles that. Supposedly they'll be able to tell me what's going on. That's been a couple days ago now, and I've not received any updates yet. While I don't think this item should be a hazmat product, and it seems like we should be able to get it cleared because there are dozens of other sellers selling nearly identical products through FBA, I'm very hesitant to pull the trigger on this order until it gets cleared. So, that's all given me some time to think. Even before finding out they had decided to leave Hazmat status on the product, I had decided to look into other options. As a result, I've made some changes to my plan. I'm still super excited about doing this product in the future, but it is no longer going to be my first product. The path I'm going to take now is quite a bit different than the one I was originally planning, and I think it is for the better. So this frustrating hiccup with being flagged as Hazmat may have been a blessing in disguise. In the coming episodes, I'll talk more about what I've changed with my plan. And when I know more, I'll keep you updated on the Hazmat issue and hopefully be able to share some tips for what to do if you find yourself in a similar situation.I'm leaving tomorrow morning to go visit family in Idaho. The trip was planned long before my health fell apart, but I'm hopeful that the dry air in Idaho will help give me a bit of a reprieve.By the time I get back, my first product should be here – I actually just checked the tracking info and it is expected to be delivered on Thursday. So I can begin moving forward with that.I'm planning to take my recorder with me, but I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to record another episode while I'm gone or not. If not, I'll have a lot to talk about when I get back! For a transcript of this show, and to leave any comments or feedback, head over to brandingblitz.com/6 If you have any questions you'd like to ask and maybe get it answered on the podcast, drop me a line at brandingblitz.com/ask If you haven't done so yet, could you do me a favor and head over to iTunes to subscribe and leave a review. That will help me tell iTunes that I am NOT a hazardous material – and I'd really appreciate it. That's it for this episode, I'll catch you next time on the Branding Blitz.
I hadn't played this tune for a long time until I thought I had been asked to record it here. Once I'd finished the process I realised that "The Green Groves of" is not a synonym for "Farewell to". I'll maybe take a trip to the airport and get some inspiration for the tune I was supposed to play. (I think I had a mish-mash of farewell to green groves in Erin's Ireland earlier. I hope this particular tangled hank of yarn has now been been unravelled )
