Re-running Summer of Trinity, this time with episodes released at the start of their respective weeks rather than the end. Just for a different perspective. July 15 to July 21, 1945 This is Summer of Trinity - a daily description of events in the summer of 1945, touching points around the world but centered (as that summer was) on the Trinity nuclear test. This episode has daily events for the week ending Saturday July 21th, 1945. Sunday, July 15,1945 - 1 Day Before Trinity 12th Army Situation Map (Germany and surrounding areas) https://www.osti.gov/opennet/manhattan-project-history/Events/1945/trinity_evaluations.htm The American contingent arrives at Potsdam. The imminent start of the conference was a major reason the Trinity test had been planned of this week. Returning from his one-day shakedown cruise for the USS Indianapolis, Captain McVay meets with Captain William Parsons of Project Alberta and Admiral William R. Purnell - one of the chief military advisors for the Manhattan Project. They don't mention these connections to McVay, who is informed only that his ship has been chosen for an important mission: He is to proceed with all possible speed across the Pacific, first to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and then to the Marianas, on the edge of the Philippine sea. There he will deliver his cargo to the air base on the island of Tinian. He is assured that every day saved delivering the cargo is a day closer to the end of the war. He is to safeguard the cargo at all costs - ALL costs. If the ship is lost, his first priority will be saving this cargo - if necessary, a lifeboat is to be used to ensure it is undamaged. McVay will not, however, be told what the cargo actually is. There are some clues, however. There are two Army officers who will accompany the cargo and see it safely ashore at Tinian: Major Robert Furman, and Capt. James Nolan. While they are presented as "artillerymen," McVay eventually learns from Captain Nolan that he is actually a doctor, with the implication that there are some health concerns about the cargo. Nolan assures McVay that there is no actual danger to the crew of the Indianapolis. Nolan does not mention that he is one of two medical doctors at Los Alamos - not that McVay would have know where that was - nor that he is the doctor who put together the safety plan to ensure the health of those attending the upcoming Trinity test. But McVay knows that there are not a lot of materials that are both relatively small and enough of a health concern to merit the attendance of a doctor. https://ahf.nuclearmuseum.org/ahf/profile/james-f-nolan/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_B._McVay_III https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Indianapolis_(CA-35) Monday, July 16,1945 - Trinity Yoko Moriwaki's diary is available through online and other booksellers, and in some libraries. https://www.amazon.com/Yokos-Diary-Paul-Ham/dp/0733331173/r https://www.dearfolksies.com/wabern-germany-july-10-august-23-1945/6/ https://www.trumanlibrary.gov/node/400674 Tuesday, July 17,1945 - 1 Day After Trinity The Potsdam Conference began in Potsdam, occupied Germany. The Pumpkin Church by Brian Boshoff
Send us Fan MailWe sit down with Doug McLaughlin of M&O Spirits to hear how a film-and-production background turned into a grain-to-glass distillery south of Columbus. We taste through Ta-Da, Pumpkin Spice, Black, Smoke, and a cask strength pour while Doug breaks down the process choices that make his whiskey stand out. • Doug and Mike's path from basement R&D to a fully licensed Ohio craft distillery • Why M&O sticks to 55-gallon barrels and waits for real maturity • The double oaking method using custom toasted and charred staves • Long fermentation for fruit esters and a cleaner, drinkable distillate • Ta-Da white whiskey: wheat-heavy recipe, multi-run pot distillation, quick oak touch for whiskey designation • Pumpkin puree in the mash and spice satchels in the barrel for a balanced holiday finish • Black vs Smoke: same mash bill, different distillation count, different flavor profiles • Cask strength tasting notes and how proof can mean concentrated flavour • Where to buy, distillery hours, and why some cask strength bottles are distillery-only • Our July 25 tasting event plug and why “try before you buy” matters www.scotchybourbonboys.com. Make sure whether you listen to us or you watch us to become a member, subscribe, leave good feedback, all that stuff. A lot of craft bourbon talk is hype. Doug McLaughlin from M&O Spirits shows what it looks like when the hype is backed by process, patience, and a distiller who can explain every decision from mash to bottle. We're joined by Doug (calling in from Asheville, Ohio) and we taste through the lineup while he lays out how M&O went from an off-the-books R&D basement setup to a fully legal, award-winning grain-to-glass distillery. We dig into the techniques that shape the flavor: a long 20-day fermentation designed to build fruit esters, pot still runs that change the entire personality of the same mash bill, and a double oaking approach that uses custom white oak staves toasted, charred, and smothered to lock smoke into the wood. You'll hear why Black (triple distilled) lands smoother and more “classic bourbon,” while Smoke (double distilled) keeps a bigger mouthfeel with brighter fruit and built-in campfire notes that shine in an Old Fashioned. Then we get into the fun bottles: Ta-Da, a wheat-forward white whiskey that surprises people who expect “gasoline,” and a pumpkin spice spirit made with real pumpkin puree in the cook and spice satchels aging in the barrel for years so the finish feels like dessert, not a candle. We also talk cask strength, non-chill filtering, careful cuts, and how small allocations impact where you can actually buy the rare stuff. If you're near Columbus, Doug shares how to visit, tour, and taste at the distillery, plus how to catch him at the July 25 event at Mother Stewart's. Subscribe, share this with your bourbon group, and leave a review so more people can find the show and the makers behind the bottles. We want to thank all of our friends for their continuing understanding and patience as we navigate Peach's cancer journey. The episodes may not be coming as regularly as usual, but we're trying our best. Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We're coming at ya with a new episode! Peach completed her 14th round of chemo right before a PACKED weekend. It was unfortunate timing, but you gotta live your life. Plus, Peach is one strong woman. If she puts her mind to something, she's gonna make it happen. In this packed weekend, we went to see New Found Glory, Yellowcard, and Plain White T's play a show in Asbury Park at The Stone Pony. Then we made a trip to Heavy Reel Brewing to help them celebrate their 8th Anniversary. There was beer, tattoos, and fun! We wrapped up the weekend by making a trip to north Jersey to Pandora's Toy Box to meet Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot. You may know them better as Cousin Larry Appleton and Balki. Peach made cookies, Pumpkin got a burger from Wawa, and we grabbed some sandwiches at Capriotti's (It was Pumpkin's first time) There's no separate Beer Patch this week, but Pumpkin does discuss his weekend at NJ Horror Con a couple weeks back. All those things and more await you. Hosts: Ed Jones (Owner of Nutrition World) & Clint Powell A variety of topics all to living a healthy life Presented by: Nutrition World www.nutritionw.com Broadcasting from the Nooga Dentistry Studio www.noogadentistry.com Production of: Whitfield Media Group www.vitalhealthradio.com Title: All about Eggs & Pasture Raised Chickens with Kristy, Deprescribing & “De-Supplementing” with Dr. Curt Dearing [0:00:00] Intro, Nutrition World Updates, and Ed's Bodybuilding Prep Ed announces a new partnership with Azure: Bringing ~100 new holistic food items into Nutrition World. Examples: maple syrup, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, organic chicken breast, cheeses, farm butters. Ed shares he's preparing for the Chattanooga Fitness Bodybuilding Contest (his 4th year): Being coached by Matt Davis (Train Station gym). Current approach: high protein, ~40% fewer calories, focused fat loss. Matt had him do a high-carb refeed day (~300g carbs vs his usual 50g) which dramatically improved his energy and look. [0:9:11] Protein, Longevity, and Why Ed Focuses on Eggs Ed emphasizes a higher-protein diet, especially for aging, muscle maintenance, and longevity. Core diet elements he advocates: Higher protein Healthy fats Colorful vegetables (in smaller but consistent amounts) Notes many women under-consume protein, which accelerates muscle loss and impacts longevity. Introduces guest Kristy, a long-time friend and staff member who homesteads and raises eggs that Ed eats 12–18 per week. [0:11:04] Homesteading with Kristy: How She Raises Chickens and Protects the Flock Kristy's setup: Around 100 chickens, plus goats, dogs, cats, and a donkey (Bradford). Lives “on the prairie” (rural, wooded property). Uses no chemicals on the property (no weed killers, pest sprays, etc.). She wants chickens to “do chicken things”—roam, peck, eat bugs, move soil—rather than be treated like pets or indoor animals. Predator control: No perimeter fence; previously lost some chickens to a fox attack. Now uses Bradford the donkey and a Great Pyrenees dog for protection: Donkey alerts and deters daytime predators like hawks and owls (stomping and loud calls). Pyrenees patrols at night, primarily deterring coyotes. Roosters herd hens into cover when threats appear. Motivator: Kristy's passion for knowing where her food comes from, and controlling at least part of her family's food system. [0:15:09] Structured Water, and Animal Hydration Kristy filters all animal water with a high-grade system (not just a basic fridge filter): Removes contaminants without completely stripping all minerals (not full RO). Then she “restructures” the water with a swirling device (structure unit): Mimics water flowing over rocks in nature, believed to add “life” and energy back to the water. She and Ed both report feeling better hydration from structured water (less persistent thirst). All of her animals receive this filtered/structured water. [0:17:26] Egg Production, Breeds, and Why Yolk Color Matters Kristy keeps multiple chicken breeds: Shell color = breed, not nutrition (white, brown, cream, etc., are just different breeds). Example: White Leghorn → white eggs, Rhode Island Red → darker brown eggs. Key nutritional indicator: yolk color She aims for deep orange yolks. Pale yellow yolks signal lower nutrient density, especially protein and nutrient intake from the chickens' diet. Production basics: Most hens lay about 5–6 eggs per week, especially in their first 3 years. Ed and Clint estimate she's getting hundreds of eggs per week in total. Kristy's flock policy: She has a “no-kill” policy for older hens, keeping them for tick and bug control and the social flock structure. Acknowledges some people cull flocks after 2–3 years, but she tends to keep productive, healthy hens past 4 years. [0:19:37] Industrial Eggs vs. Pasture-Raised: Animal Welfare and Nutrition Ed contrasts Kristy's setup with CAFO operations (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations): Chickens crowded in small cages, poor conditions, bad feed. Notes such operations often use antibiotics—partly for disease, but also because they fatten animals. Kristy's holistic management: No antibiotics; uses natural anti-parasite and immune support: Pumpkin seeds for worms Homegrown herbs like oregano and rosemary She builds a strong “terrain” (internal environment) in the animals so they resist disease better. Discussion that what chickens eat (seed oils, moldy grains, etc. in industrial systems) ultimately affects the nutritional quality of the eggs humans eat. Nutritional highlights of eggs: Choline in yolks (brain and cognitive health). A “perfect protein” with high biological value and broad micronutrients. Eggs historically rank at the top for turning dietary protein into muscle due to a complete amino acid profile. Cholesterol discussion: Ed challenges the blanket fear of cholesterol: Cholesterol supports hormone production and brain function. Notes that the real risk markers are advanced lipoproteins like ApoB and Lp(a), not total cholesterol alone. Personal example: Ed eats 12–18 eggs per week. & his cholesterol is extremely low by clinical standards. Conclusion: Quality eggs are encouraged, especially from pasture-based systems like Kristy's, or higher-quality options in stores. [0:23:15] “Organic” vs. “Pasture-Raised” and Misleading Egg Labels “Organic eggs”: fed organic feed but may still be confined indoors with no outdoor access. “Pasture-raised”: hens are outdoors on pasture, doing natural chicken behaviors; often superior in welfare and nutrition. Both agree: If forced to choose, pasture-raised is preferable to organic-only. They call out labels bragging about “vegetarian-fed” hens as misleading: Chickens are not natural vegetarians; they're omnivores that eat bugs. Forcing a vegetarian diet moves them away from their natural food and may reduce egg quality. Kristy shares a quirky but natural behavior: Chickens love scrambled eggs as a treat. She feeds them scrambled eggs and crushed shells. Rationale: Eggshells are rich in calcium, which hens need to build strong new shells. She simply cracks and throws shells; no elaborate processing.. [0:27:25] Refrigeration vs. Room-Temperature Egg Storage Kristy's explanation: Freshly laid eggs have a “bloom” or natural protective coating that makes them shelf-stable if not washed. Unwashed farm eggs can sit at room temperature for ~6 weeks or more. Store-bought eggs are washed and must be refrigerated, because washing removes that protective coating. You cannot safely leave standard grocery-store eggs on the counter. Ed highlights this as another example of nature's built-in protective design. [0:32:28] Deprescribing and “De-Supplementing” with Dr. Curt Dearing Ed reintroduces Dr. Curt Dearing to expand on a prior show about deprescribing (reducing excessive medications). Common scenario Curt sees: People on many prescription meds plus a large number of supplements, overwhelmed and confused. They want to simplify, optimize, and know what really matters. Curt's consult approach: Review all meds and all supplements, then: Remove what isn't necessary. Emphasize foundational lifestyle and core supplements. They warn about a false sense of security: Some people think “I'm taking a pill, so I don't have to change my habits.” This applies to both pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. [0:36:00] The Core Four, Lifestyle First, and Limits of Medication-Only Approaches Ed references his “Core Four” foundational supplements (detailed in a free ebook on The Holistic Navigator): Designed as tier 1 essentials vs. lower-tier “nice-to-have” supplements. Curt's stance: Diet and exercise are the primary pillars. Supplements should support, not replace, healthy habits. Example: People on metformin or berberine may keep eating poorly yet feel “covered” because their blood sugar numbers look better. This is managing symptoms, not addressing root causes. [37:15] “Beyond Cholesterol” and Advanced Heart Risk Testing Curt mentions his upcoming ebook “Beyond Cholesterol” (targeting Amazon release): Argues standard lipid panels (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL) are not enough. Advocates for advanced tests like ApoB, Lp(a), and coronary calcium scores. Example case: A patient with LDL of 212 on atorvastatin. Curt notes that LDL alone can be “dangerous or harmless” depending on the underlying particle types and inflammation. Coronary Calcium Score: Patient's score is 0, which is reassuring but not a free pass. Calcium score detects calcified plaque, not soft plaque, and doesn't capture inflammation. Curt emphasizes HS-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) as a marker of systemic inflammation, which drives soft plaque formation. [0:40:22] Medications in the Case Study: Statin, Nexium, Amlodipine, Zoloft Curt walks through a specific patient on multiple meds: Atorvastatin (statin) Curt questions its necessity given: Calcium score of 0 Lipid values that don't look catastrophic Recommends advanced lipid testing and provides patients with evidence-based reasons to discuss with their provider if they want to stop. Nexium (PPI) Discusses risks of long-term proton pump inhibitor use: Impaired absorption of magnesium, calcium, micronutrients Possible cognitive, kidney, and bone issues. Insists on a taper, not cold turkey, due to rebound reflux. Amlodipine (blood pressure med) Often can be tapered fairly quickly, especially when: Lifestyle changes are implemented (diet, exercise). Magnesium intake is optimized (many people take too little magnesium). Curt's view: conventional medicine often drives blood pressure too low in older adults; some elevation is physiologically adaptive. Zoloft (SSRI) Must be tapered, like most psychiatric meds, to avoid withdrawal and symptom flare. [0:46:10] Magnesium, Omega-3s, and Simplifying the Supplement Stack Curt reviews the patient's supplement list and simplifies: Multivitamin: Advocates a high-quality multi (not basic synthetics like Centrum). Prefers one that already includes CoQ10 (e.g., 100 mg), so separate CoQ10 can be discontinued. Vitamin D: Should be taken with vitamin K to direct calcium into bone and away from arteries and organs. Omega-3s: Many people take half the necessary dose. Recommends triglyceride-form omega-3s like DHA Extra (~960 mg DHA) for inflammation and blood pressure. Magnesium: Suggests glycinate or taurate forms for better absorption and blood pressure benefits. Probiotics: Curt suggests taking breaks (e.g., a month off) and rotating brands/strains, including spore-based types. Seasonal products: The patient takes quercetin + stinging nettle for allergies. Curt recommends seasonal use only for seasonal allergies, saving money and reducing pill fatigue. For lipids and blood sugar, Curt favors BerberCol (berberine + bergamot) to: Improve numbers (to satisfy doctors). More meaningfully affect ApoB and related risk markers. Weight & energy: Patient had been using weight-loss products. Curt shifts focus to fixing sleep and overall lifestyle rather than stacking more “fat burners.” Saffron: He distinguishes between saffron extracts for mood vs. saffron for weight management—formulation details matter. [0:54:57] Closing: Funding for Alternative Health and Supplement Tax Benefits Ed shares policy/legislative updates: Alternative health funding preserved in the federal budget. Initial fear that support would be cut; instead, it was kept in the proposed budget. The Dietary Supplement Access Act proposal: Would classify dietary supplements as a qualified medical expense in the IRS code. Allow individuals to claim up to $500/year (and $250 for married filing separately) for supplements. Could apply to common products like multivitamins, vitamin D, etc. if/when finalized. In this latest installment in our mini-series, How To Be A Bear Hunter, we talk to Dante Zuniga-West about hunting pumpkin-headed monsters. We talk stillness, visualization and readiness, as well as Dante's favorite bear gun and loads. Dante came to hunting by way of prep school in Bel Air. He is a mild-mannered high school principal, the offspring of educators, he holds a master's degree from an art institute and he is the Backwoods Blaxican. He grew up searching out and reading hunting magazines then found his way into the Northwest. Now he lives on a farm in western Oregon and hunts bear and deer and grouse in the Coast Range. In this solo episode on androgenic alopecia, the host explains that hair loss is slow and progressive, driven largely by genetics and DHT-mediated miniaturization of follicles across the anagen, catagen, and telogen cycle, and stresses early detection using periodic photos of the temples, hairline/vertex, and crown. He frames hair growth as a "battle" between Wnt signaling (promotes growth and anagen entry via stem cell activation) and DHT signaling (suppresses Wnt and increases inhibitors like DKK, TGF-beta, and PGD2), noting advanced loss involves inflammation, fibrosis, and irreversible follicle loss. He reviews contributors like poor scalp blood flow, iron deficiency (most evidence), possible zinc/B12/folate deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, and insulin resistance, then covers treatments: finasteride (oral and topical) and dutasteride as DHT blockers with potential systemic side effects, plus minoxidil and microneedling (home vs professional) as key options, with add-ons like ketoconazole shampoo, PRP, red light, and cautions about anabolic steroids and high-dose testosterone increasing DHT pressure. “Great catering adventure” or act of insanity? It was probably closer to the latter when Bossy offered to cater her son's film shoot for his senior project on a freezing weekend in February in Philadelphia. Thank God for the help and support of so many people, including sisters-in-law Leslie and Gail and great friends, like Betsy Grenier, who survived the adventure and was willing to talk with us about it in this episode. Talking about trauma always helps. So what was the scope of this catering caper? Five meals for 30 starving college students spread out over two days at the Chamounix Mansion in Fairmont Park. Yep. We did that. And here's the thing about agreeing to do crazy big things: there is a weird sense of triumph that comes at the end because being part of a big creative project is truly amazing. When it was over, it felt like a dream--Betsy said "a bad dream"--but a dream nonetheless. All parents want their kids to find their passion and purpose, and living on the edge and bearing witness to that was, well, every parent's dream. But it definitely takes a village to make dreams happen, and this was more proof of that (as if we needed it). Our village was all the cast and crew members to what Betsy dubbed our "Just Hired Craft Services Company" toiling away in the basement kitchen. The menu featured many Bootie and Bossy recipes from the Pumpkin bread and Granola to homemade marshmallows and garlic aioli, all available on our website and easily found using the oh-so-convenient search bar (ah-hem). Try out the delicious Spinach Mushroom Brunch Bake, which was a big hit for breakfast on the second day—thank you, Gail, for supplying Chris Brez's recipe from The Hawkin School's Best Recipes (2002).Here's what we learned: next time you have the chance to do something big and crazy, do it! You will be glad that you did.

Justin, an American from Texas and Easy Languages family member joins us to talk about money, driving on the left, the Royal Family, plus culture shocks and strange similarities between Brits and people from the United States Interactive Transcript Support Easy English and get interactive transcripts and bonus content for all our episodes: easyenglish.fm/membership Transcript Intro Mitch: [0:23] Hello, everybody. Isi: [0:24] Hello. Mitch: [0:25] Welcome to another episode of the Easy English Podcast. Isi, we have an exciting episode today, right? Isi: [0:33] Yes. Mitch: [0:35] Why is that? Isi: [0:36] We have a guest from our Easy Languages family. And, it will be exciting and interesting. Maybe we let our guests introduce themselves. Mitch: [0:49] Yes, greetings to our mystery guest. Who are you Justin: [0:54] Hello hello, my name is Justin, and I am a part of the Easy Languages family. I've been with Easy Languages for over four years now, which is beautiful, amazing. - Wow. - Yes. - And I'm really... yeah, I'm really excited to be on this Easy English podcast, because my native language is English. I grew up in the United States, in Houston, Texas, to be specific. But I also lived in Manchester, UK for a bit of time, around nine months, I want to say. And yeah, there are definitely a lot of differences. Some of them I kind of yearn to go back for, if I'm being honest. Mitch: [1:40] Wow, amazing. That's a good introduction. And you're a really amazing guest to have on to do these comparisons and contrasts, I guess. Can I ask a question before we start, Justin? Justin: [1:53] Yeah, go ahead. Mitch: [1:53] Can you name us some famous people from where you're from? Where in Texas were you from again? Justin: [1:59] I'm from Houston, Texas. And the most famous person that I will always represent is Beyoncé. Mitch: [2:03] Oh, really!? Justin: [2:04] Beyoncé is from Houston, Texas. Yes. So is all of the Destiny's Child. Some younger artists that I know. Post Malone is from Texas. Mitch: [2:14] Really? Wow! Justin: [2:15] Yes. But... Khaled, if you know that artist. Isi: [2:20] Yeah. Mitch: [2:21] DJ Khaled? Justin: [2:22] Not that one. The one that made that like breezy song. I forgot what it's called. Mitch: [2:29] Is Dolly Parton from Texas? Justin: [2:31] I was thinking about that, but I think she's from Tennessee. Mitch: [2:35] Because with Texas, it comes with a stereotype of people that look a bit like Dolly Parton in my mind. That's what I always think of. Justin: [2:42] I mean, they do exist. - Cowboy hats, cowboy boots. - The "bless your heart", type of people. Bless your heart, darling. Those people exist for sure. Mitch: [2:51] Pumpkin pie, people. Justin: [2:54] Matthew McConaughey. He's from Texas. Mitch: [2:57] Wow. All right, all right, all right. Justin: [3:00] Yes. He actually was a professor at the United... at the University of Texas in Austin. Mitch: [3:07] Wow. From Matthew McConaughey to Liam Gallagher, you went from. But this is great. This is already good. I'm already sort of getting a sense for the cultural comparisons that we're going to get. So, I believe you've prepared a list of certain contrasts and similarities for our 'Topic of the Week', right? Justin: [3:31] Yes. Mitch: [3:32] Okay, let's get started with that. I stood in the corner of our tiny shack atop a mountain in Topanga and waited for my brother to come home. He would be there any minute and would see his beloved black lab mix, Cinder, dead under a sheet in the front yard. We'd been out riding that afternoon. My mom was on our quarterhorse Teddybear. My younger sister and I rode the twin stallion ponies, Pumpkin (mine) and Fireball (hers). It was summer. We were riding to Topanga Elementary to play in an empty schoolyard. Cinder came along. It was always hot, but that day, it was baking, and we were not prepared. All of a sudden, Cinder collapsed. My mother, in a panic, ordered my sister and me to ride our ponies to the school and bring back water. Maybe we could save her, we thought. When we finally got to the school, we scoured the trash cans and found empty milk cartons. We rinsed them, filled them, then galloped back, Pony Express-style, to where my mom was waiting. But it was too late. Cinder was gone.I don't remember much else about that day, except what happened to my brother later, when he came home. I'd never seen my tough, strong older brother cry. That was my first lesson in the unique grief of losing a dog. They call them “soul dogs” or “heart dogs” on Reddit. It's that connection you have with a special dog that will never be matched by any other. I have always hated how the internet flattens things into group ideas, but in this case, they were right. I had to let go of my soul dog, Jack, and I'll never be the same.Mind you, I didn't want to. I rationalized it many times. I even almost took him to the hospital and asked them to cut him open, remove the large cancerous mass inside of him, give him kidney dialysis, and chemo. Something, anything to keep him alive. Needles, hospital room, strangers, bright lights. That would not have been for Jack. That was for me. I couldn't do that to him.People have said, “You gave him such a happy life,” and I tried. But how do you measure the happiness of a dog? To me, Jack wanted more than anything to be free. Free of the leash. Free of doing only what I wanted him to do. Free to have maybe found a mate one time instead of having that possibility taken off the table. Free to roam, most of all, through the hills and the fields.I could not give that to him. The best I could do was make a situation for a dog with the urge to roam slightly less terrible. Oh, I suppose I could have never gotten him in the first place, waited for the ideal owner, like a rancher to pick him up. I don't know if I was Jack's ideal owner or not. I just know that he was my soul dog, for better or worse. You don't choose dogs. They choose you. I'd pulled into a gas station near the Four Corners of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico en route to the Telluride Film Festival in 2014 when I looked down, and there was a furry little wolfen creature, redheaded, with bright green eyes staring up at me, and was that a smile? He already knew how to ask for food, and I was happy to oblige. Only I didn't want to just feed the dog. I wanted to rescue him. I don't know why, exactly. It felt like a calling. He was redheaded, like my pony Pumpkin. He had green eyes like mine. But it was his sweet disposition that meant it was love at first sight, even if I didn't know it yet.I told my daughter and her friend, both named Emma, to go get some dog food because we were taking this dog. When I turned around, he had crawled away and hidden under a trailer, but a woman pulled him out and handed him to me. That sealed Jack's fate, to be rescued by city girls. Jack wasn't going to be my dog at first. My daughter's friend wanted him, but her parents said no. That night, as the girls hung out in their basement room and I was cooking a roast chicken, I heard little feet tap-tap-tapping up the stairs, and there he was again, smiling up at me, wanting food. Okay, little pup, I thought, I guess I'm a dog person now.“Don't take him if you can't keep him,” my younger sister warned. I knew what she meant. She'd thought I'd abandon Jack if some guy wanted me to, as I'd done once before when I was too stupid to know better. The dog went to my mom, who doted on her, but still. It sent the message that I couldn't be trusted with a dog. We had three cats already, but dogs weren't allowed in our apartment in North Hollywood. When they found out, I was ordered to get rid of Jack. So we split to Burbank. I also broke up with a boyfriend over my dog. Sorry, I made my choice, and there was no going backFour years later, we finally adopted a friend for him because he hated being alone, and my daughter Emma was leaving for college. We had a hard time choosing and were about to leave the shelter when a volunteer came out, holding a tiny, terrified terrier-poodle mix. She'd been there two weeks, and no one wanted her. How could we say no? It felt like another kind of calling. Her name was Pippa, but we changed it to Luna, and though she looks desperately sad in that photo, she bloomed, and Jack and Luna became a happy, bonded pair, and the three of us were inseparable until the day Jack died. Thursday, March 19, 2026. But that's not to say Jack was easy. He wasn't. I didn't train him properly because I never wanted to change his personality. I didn't want an obedient dog. I wanted this dog. But that meant he could be quite obstinate when he wanted to go in a different direction from me. It got worse as he got older, when he became a grumpy old dog. He would pull just to pull, and much of the time I'd give in, except when I couldn't, and sometimes I couldn't.He also could not eat his food in a bowl like other dogs. It had to be on a flat surface, and he would scatter the kibble all across the floor before lying down to eat it. Yes, I spoiled him, and responsible dog owners would not approve. It could have been worse. He could be a growler or a biter, but this dog did not have an aggressive bone in his body. He was sweet and gentle, the nicest dog I've ever met. He made friends with everyone, dogs, cats, and people.I don't think it really occurred to him what his life would be like until he got older. But I think once he figured it out that this was really it, a life on a leash, walking through neighborhoods, occasionally running free, I think he got grumpier, more obstinate, and he pulled on his leash harder, and it became a battle of wills. Sometimes I was angry and annoyed at him. Now those moments come flooding back with an enormous sense of guilt. How could I have ever thought of being annoyed at him for even one second? Maybe I'm projecting. Maybe he never figured it out. Maybe he never thought about it. He just knew he was frustrated with how much pain he was in and with how limited his life had become, and there was nothing I could do to change that for him or fix it.I always wished he could speak. I always wanted to talk to him, “Remember when I found you at the Four Corners? Remember how much you loved running in the sand at the beach? Remember rolling in the snow? Remember the motels and the road trips? Remember how you liked to chase the ball? Remember driving into a blizzard? Remember getting stranded in the sand after I took a wrong turn and how we had to be towed out?Remember how you would wimper when we drove to the airport to pick up my daughter Emma because you were so happy to see her? Remember how you herded us and we all had to leave the apartment at the same time, or you would keep looking for the one that was missing.Remember all the friends you made in every neighborhood we lived in? Remember the horse we used to feed that wanted to be friends with you because everyone wanted to be friends with you.Where would you like to go today? The park? The field? The hills? And I know what his answer would be. He would wag his tail and be ready to go. When he could no longer jump into the car, I got him stairs. When the stairs became too hard, I got him a ramp. Where does it hurt, Jack? Tell me where the pain is. Tell me where to check. Tell me when you need to go to the vet. Talk to me. But all he could do was signal to me with his body, his behavior, and his eyes, and I was not paying close enough attention. There's the guilt again. Could I have helped him if we'd caught it sooner? I don't know. Our long walks through town and our hikes began to slow down last year, and he could only make it around the block. Then, just this past week, he could barely make it down the street, and then, barely from the car to the front door.It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, making the call to end his life. It was time for him to go, and I knew I had to grim up and face the music. He'd gone off his food for two weeks. He threw up even baby food, and then he couldn't keep down water. He could barely breathe.I would hear him wretching in the middle of the night and find him stuck under the table, his body completely cold, and I kept thinking any minute he would take his last breath, but he somehow held on.Jack turned into a different dog in the last moments of his life, and for some reason, this breaks my heart the most. Gone was the willful, obstinate, slightly annoying dog who sometimes made our daily walks frustrating. In his weakened state, he went wherever I wanted him to go. He came when I called him. Every night, almost, he disappeared into the back yard because he knew he was dying. And every night I went outside with a flashlight to call him back in, and he would come, just like a normal dog. He was doing it for me, I realize now, even at his own expense.Everywhere I look, there is Jack. The green grass that I know he would want to roll in. The rib bones, I know, he would want to chew. The drives I know he would want to take. The dog beds I bought that still sit untouched in a pile on the patio. And the gravel that he could never pass without lying down in. This is grief. This is what it means to lose a soul dog. I know I loved him too much. I was prepared for almost everything except saying goodbye. I want to tell you everything about him, to remember everywhere we went and every cute thing he ever did, like how, when he signaled to me that he couldn't get off the couch to get a drink of water, I would lift the bowl for him. When the droplets hit his paw, he had to gently clean them off. I don't know why, but that one thing he's always done crushes my heart.I can't possibly tell you of our adventures together, how close we were, and how hard it is now for Luna to walk alone. She lies down near Jack's spot because she still senses his presence, as do I. I keep smelling his fur, which might sound weird, but I loved how Jack smelled. It was like the smell of a baby. You recognize it. I did not want to let him go. I wanted to be selfish and keep him around until he died on his own, but my younger sister, who once warned me not to take him if I could not keep him, told me that he's shown up for me, and now it's time for me to show up for him. Holding him, petting him, brushing him because I'd been doing that every day for a week, and then saying goodbye to him as the poison was injected into his beautiful, tiny, spotted paw, then waiting for his heart to stop felt like falling into a deep well - into a world without color, without joy. My soul dog was my constant companion for 12 too-short years. Now I try to see his soul - which was never mine - as finally free.I still think I hear him, especially at night. I hear his panting or his breathing, how he would sigh, letting out all his air, before he settled in to sleep. I would hear him pacing and circling before he lay down. I always knew where he was. And he was never far.I pray that he visits me in my dreams. I pray that he's the first thing I see when I get to Heaven.Run, my beautiful dog, my precious heart, my Happy Jack, my Buddy. Be obstinate and annoying. Be your perfect, wonderful self because now you are finally free. // This is a public episode. Discover how to elevate your family's nutrition this season with expert insights from Shasity Ireland on The Ash Said It Show. This episode explores the best healthy springtime snacks, high-protein swaps, and artisanal food pairings featuring Southern Recipe Small Batch and Bakehouse Bread Company to help you celebrate National Nutrition Month with flavor and function. Spring is the ultimate season for a pantry refresh, moving away from processed "junk food" toward nutrient-dense, high-protein alternatives that satisfy the whole family. One of the most significant shifts in the snacking world is the gourmet evolution of the pork rind. Brands like Southern Recipe Small Batch are dismantling the traditional snack stigma by offering macro-friendly options in sophisticated flavor profiles such as Pineapple Ancho Chile and Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper. These aren't just for snacking straight from the bag; they serve as a versatile "secret ingredient," acting as a crunchy, low-carb breading for Southern favorites or a high-protein topping for savory dishes. For those tracking macros or seeking clean-label snacks, these small-batch rinds offer a satisfying crunch without the nutritional compromise. When paired with the artisanal craftsmanship of Bakehouse Bread Company, you can create the ultimate balanced brunch board. Every NYC foodie knows that a "hero" loaf or signature pastry from a dedicated bakehouse is the gold standard for quality. To style the perfect springtime spread, pair these artisanal crusts with local seasonal ingredients like whipped goat cheese, fresh berries, or local honey to balance hearty textures with light, spring flavors. In honor of National Nutrition Month, focusing on high-protein swaps is an effective way to improve daily wellness. Replace standard salad croutons with crushed pork rinds for added protein and less gluten, or swap traditional sugary spreads on your Bakehouse toast for nutrient-dense almond or cashew butter. Celebrating nutrition means making mindful choices—like "eating the rainbow" with vibrant spring produce and choosing artisanal, small-batch brands that prioritize quality ingredients over fillers. By integrating these healthy swaps for the whole family, you can enjoy gourmet flavors while supporting a high-protein, active lifestyle throughout the spring and beyond.

The idea of traditions can feel heavy and like once you do it you're stuck doing them forever… I wanted to do a fullll podcast episode that would give you lots of ideas that feel light and fun and can be so special to your family. Things that make you all feel more connected… and that feel so unique and important to your family. It's easy for parenting to feel like a constant sprint sometimes… school, sports, meals, naps… it's a refreshing change to lean into special things that your family does. I realized how precious this is when one of my kids wrote a little paper about one of our traditions in 1st grade. You realize… this is the stuff they remember and the resinates deep. This whole thing is about pausing these busy life days we are all living and thinking about emotional anchors we can create throughout the year. Traditions don't have to be rigid. They don't have to be expensive. And they definitely don't have to be perfect. Today we're talking about a fresh way to think about family traditions: Some traditions you repeat every year Some you rotate Some you try once and just remember Some you write down so your family builds its own memory playbook Because what kids remember most isn't perfection… it's connection. HOLIDAY TRADITIONS The goal here isn't more pressure. It's creating emotional anchors in the year. VALENTINE'S DAY TRADITIONS Love notes on door After dinner game Decorate Valentine boxes & make notes for each other Secret Santa but Valentine style Blow up heart with balls and prizes to find inside Kids serve you dinner on Valentine's Kids go out to dinner with you on Valentine's HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS Say Trick Or Treat at the front door on Halloween in Costume Do family costumes and everyone plans them together Decorate the inside and/or outside of the house in a certain theme or go all out together Give out something specific like full size candy bars Set-up a game for trick or treaters to play to win an extra candy Pumpkin carving or pumpkin painting - invite everyone over THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS Gratitude time capsules, write notes and open them the next year Family volunteer Saturday Everyone puts what they are most thankful for in a hat and everyone guesses who said what Wear "thankful" shirts Family interview night, record what everyone is most thankful for - especially grandparents Coloring page to color all day on kids table CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Put lights around your neighborhood on Christmas Eve Ornament tradition, collecting special ones when you travel or making them Cutting down or picking out tree together right after thanksgiving Advent calendars Reindeer food Drive to see Christmas lights Decorate Christmas cookies Matching PJs FOURTH OF JULY TRADITIONS Do something nice for a veteran or someone that helps our country or community Stop by fire station with breakfast or something nice USA pride anything - decorate car windows, we do our golf cart Find neighborhood event at a park or create one NEW YEAR'S EVE TRADITIONS Family Vision Board Night Bang pots and pans Highlights of the year jar in kitchen- add to it throughout the year and read at end of year NY planning and goal setting Write a letter to yourself of what would make you consider next year a big success, if what happened, if you felt like what Watch the ball drop together with blowers Plan vacations for the year BIRTHDAY TRADITIONS (FOR KIDS AND PARENTS) Birthday breakfast interview... ask the same five questions every year Go around the table and do full toasts about why you love the bday person Everyone decorates their room before they wake up Presents first thing in the morning Smash cake in the face One present from each person in the family One nice thoughtful card from each person in the family MONTHLY TRADITIONS One long Sunday dinner with games New experience day - try one new thing you have never done before One service project day, or just a few hours Hike, outdoor long walk together FAMILY DINNER TRADITIONS Rose, Thorn, Bud — best part, challenge, what you're excited about Theme Dinner Nights with music and food from different countries THE TRADITION NOTEBOOK IDEA Instead of forcing traditions to be permanent, create a small family notebook where you write down ideas you tried… funny moments… things you want to repeat someday. This removes pressure and keeps the magic. Keep it somewhere easy like kitchen or nightstand. Traditions evolve as your family grows. Traditions are not about doing more. They're about choosing moments that slow life down… even just a little. You don't need to create ten new traditions this year. You don't need Pinterest-perfect ideas. Start with one small thing that feels natural to your family. Maybe it lasts one year… maybe it becomes something your kids talk about forever. The real goal isn't perfection. It's creating a feeling… a rhythm… a sense that no matter how busy life gets, your family has small anchors that bring you back to each other. And over time, those moments become the story of your family.

Episode Description Can hair growth gummies, biotin, collagen, rosemary oil, and DHT blockers actually prove they work—or are you wasting money on underdosed formulas with zero human evidence while your hair continues thinning? Dr. Christian Gonzalez investigated the hair loss supplement industry with one critical question: which supplements have randomized controlled trials showing measurable improvements in hair density and shedding reduction—not just theoretical mechanisms and marketing logic? The shocking reality? Most hair supplements fail because they assume hair loss is about "feeding the hair" when it's really about removing the signals that tell follicles to shut down and shift from growth phase into shedding. The hidden failures in "hair growth" supplements: • Hair gummies and biotin formulas with no randomized trials showing actual density improvements in humans • Generic marine collagen marketed as "hair support" when only specific proprietary marine protein complexes show results • Pumpkin seed powders that strip away the lipid sterols responsible for DHT modulation • Saw palmetto whole berry claims without standardized lipid sterol extraction • Standard turmeric powder with 4% absorption instead of curcumin phytosome forms that reach your scalp • Generic "Vitamin E" using alpha-tocopherol when hair data is based on delta and gamma tocotrienols In this episode, Dr. Christian Gonzalez reveals: • The 5 supplements with actual human evidence for hair growth—ranked by evidence scores (7-8 out of 10) • Why Viviscal's proprietary marine protein complex (Amomar) has the strongest data but isn't the cleanest formulation • How cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil inhibits 5-alpha reductase and reduces DHT without crashing hormones systemically • The lipid sterol extract of saw palmetto that works—and why whole berry powder doesn't • How curcumin phytosome (Meriva, BCM-95) addresses chronic inflammation in the scalp environment • Why mixed tocotrienols protect follicles from oxidative stress better than standard vitamin E • Exact evidence-based doses, realistic timelines (3-6 months minimum), and specific brands Dr. G trusts My one stop shop for quality supplements: https://theswellscore.com/pages/drg Timestamps: 0:00 - Why Most Hair Supplements Fail (3 Critical Reasons) 2:26 - #1: Marine Protein Complex (Viviscal) for Hair Density 4:29 - Forms Matter: How to Buy Quality Marine Complex 6:30 - #2: Pumpkin Seed Oil for DHT Modulation 8:29 - Cold-Pressed vs Powder: Why Forms Matter for Androgens 10:05 - #3: Saw Palmetto Extract for Follicle Protection 12:46 - #4: Curcumin Phytosome for Scalp Inflammation 15:43 - #5: Tocotrienols (Vitamin E Complex) for Oxidative Stress 18:16 - Final Takeaways: Stop Wasting Money on Hair Loss Hype
